- CopsSayLegalize, on 03/11/2009, -7/+87Now that we have a Drug Czar who knows what it's like to experience substance abuse in his family, and who understands that making drugs illegal does nothing to stop the problem, we can really make some changes! If you go to http://www.DrugWarDebate.com you can easily send a letter to your members of Congress, asking them to do something as your representative.
- chandler63, on 03/12/2009, -4/+60The Drug War isn't a failure. It is the problem.
- CopsSayLegalize, on 03/11/2009, -5/+51EXACTLY!
- inactive, on 03/11/2009, -4/+49That's the problem, you aren't supposed to control whether or not people choose to put drugs into their own body.
That's the whole point. - niradg, on 03/11/2009, -4/+48Whoa. It's like "Traffic"
- CopsSayLegalize, on 03/11/2009, -2/+39FYI, everyone, Norm Stamper, the drug-legalizing retired Seattle police chief who was Kerlikowske's immediate predecessor as Seattle's top cop, just put out this statement: http://www.leap.cc/cms/index.php?name=News&fil ...
- imacommi, on 03/11/2009, -6/+34I believe this is a positive development. I'm not an obama supporter (far from it). It is important to have someone on the job that understands that the "way on drugs" isn't working.
- inactive, on 03/12/2009, -3/+30How about appointing a Constitution Czar to toss out all these unconstitutional "wars on ____"
- Frankyfan3, on 03/12/2009, -1/+23Seattle Hempfest has enjoyed a good relationship with the Seattle Police Department for 18 years, 8 of those during Mr. Kerlikowske’s tenure as Chief of Police. Although we do not work directly with Mr. Kerlikowske, we have always found the SPD to be extremely professional and guided by the motivation to ensure the safety of the public over enforcement of Marijuana laws. These actions are consistent with Seattle law under I-75. Police Chief Kerlikowske opposed I-75 before it became law. We believe that it speaks to the man’s integrity that after it became law he chose to follow it.
We congratulate our local Chief of Police on his nomination. If accepted, we hope that he will respect a science based approach to drug policy rather than the scorched earth policies of the previous administration.
http://www.hempfest.org/drupal/node/69 - GEOFF361, on 03/12/2009, -0/+21Exstatic to see Obama ending Federal raids on mediacal marijuana dispenseries; also awesome to see Kerlikowske as the new drug czar....
BUT
...the article also reinforces the fact that Biden will play a large role in drug related policy. Biden is a huge supporter of the drug war.
sponsored the Illicit Drug Anti-Proliferation Act in 2003, and passed it without any public hearing by attaching it to the AMBER alert bill..
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Illicit_Drug_Anti-Pro ...
was chairman of the International Narcotics Control Caucus
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_Narcoti ... - yocouchdigga, on 03/12/2009, -0/+21"There's hope. Gil Kerlikowske is a professional cop. While he didn't favor certain drug policy reforms as Seattle's police chief (marijuana as lowest enforcement priority, for example), he didn't fight them. I know some law enforcement officials who've thumbed their noses at similar voter initiatives. Gil's a strong supporter of drug treatment. These are promising signs." - Awesome.
- MacEnvy, on 03/12/2009, -0/+19How about we stop naming "czars" altogether? Am I the only one uncomfortable with naming a government agent after oppressive, dictatorial regimes?
- inactive, on 03/12/2009, -5/+23Just go to the University of Colorado on 4/20 to see 15,000 students smoking bud on campus then tell me this drug war is working. Anyone who wants to smoke weed is going to smoke weed-No one is going to respect stupid laws
I cant wait until all these old heads in our government retire and then we can get some laws changing with the times
http://www.420magazine.com/gallery/data/500/medium ... - ThsGuyRightHere, on 03/12/2009, -1/+19That's exactly the point - he'll know that some things are beyond a measure of control. The war on drugs (supposedly) started off with the assumption that if we fought hard enough eventually people wouldn't do drugs anymore. That's a shaky foundation on which to build policy because there will never be a point where there is no drug use. The first step to writing intelligent drug policy is to display some situational awareness, something his predecessors haven't done.
- Frankyfan3, on 03/12/2009, -2/+17Troll comments, as predictable as usual.
- inactive, on 03/12/2009, -1/+16Does he pay his taxes?
- mehan, on 03/12/2009, -2/+17What the ***** is up with this obsession with the word Czar?
- Inflammo, on 03/12/2009, -2/+15Call me crazy, but I'm not sure we need a "Drug Czar."
- JRowe3388, on 03/12/2009, -2/+15You obviously don't get it.
- CopsSayLegalize, on 03/11/2009, -1/+14Here's his looooooooong rap sheet: http://www.webofdeception.com/noyes.html
- jivatmanx, on 03/12/2009, -2/+14I bet you don't know a god damn thing about Chicago.
But don't mind me, go back to groveling before listening to Jabba the Rush. - NikoKun, on 03/12/2009, -1/+12Holy crap you're an idiot. -_-
To quote a post above you: "WHOOOSH!" - JDoorjam, on 03/12/2009, -1/+11Can you tell other conservatives that the beauty of Digg is that we don't have to play for one team or another, but can discuss the issues free of what we're "supposed" to be in favor or opposed to? I really appreciate your candor, both about how you feel about Obama and on this issue, and wish (on both sides) this were the rule rather than the exception.
- inactive, on 03/12/2009, -1/+11Oh please enlighten us.
I'm waiting to hear this one. - KimmyGibbler, on 03/11/2009, -2/+12Yea, if only his son were actually a hot chick; that would be awesome
- azrochavoc, on 03/12/2009, -3/+12Thank Goodness we finally have someone who has had the failed "War on Drugs" touch his life as the person who will be making policy on these issues. I am heartened that it is no longer a cabinet level position. In fact I have seen so many positive signs lately, including my state considering Medical Marijuana finally, that I am starting to believe I might really see this happen in my life time! Thank you to all the hard work of CopsSayLegalize, the Marijuana Policy Project, Norml, and the Drug Policy Alliance!
- NikoKun, on 03/12/2009, -1/+10Maybe your comment was originally intended to bad-mouth Obama's pick... But totally by accident you've made quite a big statement about how foolish Prohibition is.
Nice job there. ;) - forknife, on 03/12/2009, -3/+11"MARIJUANA?!-- BOO THIS MAN!"
- drstock, on 03/12/2009, -0/+8WHOOOSH!
- trodemaster, on 03/12/2009, -2/+9As a resident of Seattle I fully support this nomination. SPD has had it's problems but if they see you walking around smoking a J near a club they won't bother hassling you..
- JohnA, on 03/12/2009, -1/+8Oh for *****'s sake... since when have we devolved to a society that has to make right our family member's choices.
If he is right for the job, great! I only hope that his real world experience with low-level possession penalties will help him reshape our drug policy going forward. - Seidoger, on 03/12/2009, -0/+7Oh no! A THIRTY NINE years old STEPSON
I tell you... parenting these days!!! - spyd3rweb, on 03/12/2009, -2/+9I don't know but its a ***** disgrace.
- inactive, on 03/12/2009, -1/+8Except a few crucial things middleblocker
1. There was no medical marijuana laws 30 years ago, which have changed MANY peoples attitudes and habits towards weed
2. A lot of those college kids who "grew up" still smoke weed just not as much and they arnt as politically involved with it so you wouldn't know
3. WE NEED THE DAMN MONEY FROM IT - coastiefish, on 03/12/2009, -6/+13"Mr. Kerlikowske's 39-year-old stepson, Jeffrey, was arrested last month for a parole violation and faced misdemeanor marijuana-related drug charges in 2006 and 1998."
http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2009/mar/12/dr ... - ArthurSucks, on 03/12/2009, -0/+6You've obviously never had anyone close to you become an addict.
- the2989, on 03/11/2009, -1/+7If you can't beat it, join it.
- MacEnvy, on 03/12/2009, -1/+7Yeah, I'm no Paulite (I'm a liberal douchebag), but I have no idea what you're getting at either. The interstate commerce clause is an extremely weak argument for the expansion of the "Wars On ___" that we've seen since Nixon.
- Licurgo, on 03/12/2009, -0/+5he sell his body for drugs to a big black guy
- NikoKun, on 03/12/2009, -2/+7Oh please... Be honest.
You KNOW damn well that Obama didn't create that budget. -_- And not passing it would have been far worse for everyone, and you probably would have criticized him for that too. - ByteMeAHole, on 03/12/2009, -0/+5Why not, he has tax cheats writing the tax laws that everyone else is supposed to follow... Why wouldn't he have a Drug Czar who's family uses drugs - it's just status quo... Oh, wait... I forgot, he's about CHANGE isn't he... Somehow, I'm just not seeing it...
- BenderFlexo, on 03/11/2009, -2/+7Any more details about his son's encounter? I wonder if he has sympathy, or if he will feel as though he has to prove he is tough on drugs. Hopefully he can grasp the reality of the magnitude of damage the drug war has done.
- inactive, on 03/12/2009, -0/+5legalize pot now!
- taallison, on 03/12/2009, -3/+8"The administration will remove the job's Cabinet designation -- reversing an elevation of the office under President George W. Bush" - that's the first I see that... interesting.
- RAEP, on 03/12/2009, -0/+5Definitely a dick. Way more battery charges than drug charges. He's just a dick who likes to sell and smoke weed.
Also...haha. Battery charges. Get it? - jmac9, on 03/12/2009, -0/+5
Even law enforcement is backing the end of prohibition: www.leap.cc
Here is the link to write - email your Congress members .
http://www.visi.com/juan/congress/index.html
demand that they re-introduce, support and pass HR 5843
Which ends the federal ban on adult use of marijuana-cannabis.
Use the bits listed here for your email - let's flood the Congress with emails demanding an end of this prohibition.
This link is a video by the Law Enforcement Against Prohibition group - exposing the fraud and failure of prohibition:
http://leap.cc/cms/index.php?name=Content&pid= ...
Why its so important to end the prohibition against cannabis-marijuana:
The Bush/Cheney abuses of illegal wiretaps, invasion of privacy, denial of constitutional rights to a fair trial, destruction of other civil liberties, seizure of personal assets, illegal searches -- violations of your Bill of Rights - the 4th, 5th and 6th amendments in particular -
all had there beginnings in the failed "war on drugs".
$69 Billions a year of taxpayer money continue to be wasted on this prohibition.
All DEA claims of harm from cannabis-marijuana use have been discredited,
Marijuana Myths Marijuana Facts by Lynn Zimmer and Dr. John Morgan
www.drugwarfacts.org, are just 2 of many sites and books with the facts.
Marijuana, in its natural form, is one of the safest therapeutically active substances known to man
quote from: DEA Administrative Law Judge Francis L. Young 9/6/88
1982 World Health Organization
found no injury of biological harm, psychological impairment, or social dysfunction from cannabis use.
1995 British medical journal Lancet:
the smoking of cannabis, even long term, is not harmful to health.
Here is the story of the threats made against legislators for even trying to discuss ending the prohibition:
http://www.leap.cc/cms/index.php?name=News&fil ...
Why was cannabis-marijuana made illegal? American racism.
Harry Anslinger - the first drug czar chief did say: "Reefer(marijuana) makes darkies think they are as good as white men."
and William Randolph Hearst, the American newspaper owner who campaigned for making cannabis illegal did say:
"marijuana influences Negroes to look at white people in the eye, step on white men's shadows, and look at a white woman twice." - gluecode, on 03/12/2009, -1/+5Personal experience is always good. This man has better insight now.
- JoeParanoid, on 03/12/2009, -0/+4This whole "czar" business has to go and we need to concede our "war" on drugs. We need new metaphors as well as new policies.
- MacEnvy, on 03/12/2009, -1/+5The earmarks you speak of account for less than 2% of the budget. While I agree that we need reform in that area, there are MUCH bigger problems to deal with, and they are much less convoluted.
- syndustry, on 03/12/2009, -0/+4"you ever sucked a dick for some weed?!?"
