- tcbishop12, on 08/10/2008, -18/+185When wrongfully attacked, the actual truth is always one's best weapon. Senator Obama has consistently responded with rigorous honesty.
Gone are McCain's daily promises to conduct a "respectful campaign". Gone are the optimistic speeches about serving "a cause greater than our self-interest."
McCain's just another greedy bastard trying to be the Big Cheese. The only way McCain now believes he can win is to destroy Senator Obama, attempting to define Obama (through a continuous stream of lies, deceptions, smears) as someone Obama is not. A smoke and mirrors campaign that gives us no reason whatever to vote for this disgusting, mean-spirited, blubbering senile old fart.
Whether you lose with dignity, or without it, John, is your choice. But you will lose. Big time. Because voters surely recognize - no matter how much you try to twist and turn and shout - that Sen. Obama is by very far, the better man for the job. - stephenpjc, on 08/10/2008, -7/+133ya...it does debunk the McCain attack ad, but it wasn't that 'EPIC'.
Love the preview of McCain: "Damn kids GET OFF MY LAWN" though. - xBarium, on 08/10/2008, -6/+95Why is MSM so afraid of calling the McCain campaign on their *****? They would rather cover tire gauges then do actual reporting on things that are significant to the race. Why can't we go back to the Watergate days when some reporters actually had pair instead of burying their heads in the sand.
- GoneGreen, on 08/10/2008, -10/+83Ad targets Low Information, Low IQ Voters... I call them the Republican Base...
- tcbishop12, on 08/10/2008, -9/+82Here are some of the results of the fact check from the non-partisan Annenberg Foundation (Annenberg served in the Reagan Administration, if you recall).
The Annenberg Foundation is a nonpartisan, nonprofit, "consumer advocate" for voters that aims to reduce the level of deception and confusion in U.S. politics. They monitor the factual accuracy of what is said by major U.S. political players in the form of TV ads, debates, speeches, interviews, and news releases. Their goal is to apply the best practices of both journalism and scholarship, and to increase public knowledge and understanding. The Annenberg Political Fact Check is a project of the Annenberg Public Policy Center of the University of Pennsylvania. The APPC accepts NO funding from business corporations, labor unions, political parties, lobbying organizations or individuals. It is funded primarily by the Annenberg Foundation.

Annenberg Fact Check: Vote McCain Refers to Was a Non-Binding Budget Resolution That Doesn't Raise Taxes But Assumes Most Bush Tax Cuts Expire, and "Bears No Relation To Obama's Proposed Economic Plan." FactCheck.org wrote that the vote McCain campaign cites "refers to Obama's March 2008 vote for a non-binding budget resolution that would have set general revenue and spending targets for congressional tax-writing and appropriations committees. The resolution does not contain a specific provision to raise tax rates, but rather assumes that most of the 2001 and 2003 tax cuts expire as scheduled in 2011. It also bears no relation to Obama's proposed economic plan. In fact, Obama has stated repeatedly that his plan would increase taxes only for those making more than $250,000 per year." [Factcheck.org, 7/8/08]
Annenberg Fact Check: The Hypothetical Taxpayer McCain Ad Refers To Would Get a $502 Tax Cut Under Obama Plan, but No Change Under McCain. "The most comprehensive nonpartisan analysis of Obama's tax proposal available is the Tax Policy Center's comparison of McCain's and Obama's economic plans. That analysis mostly supports Obama's claim that his plan won't raise taxes, though it says that families earning between $169,480 and $237,040 would see an average tax increase of $486 under Obama's plan. All those earning less than $169,480 would see tax cuts. In fact, that hypothetical taxpayer with the $32,000 in taxable income would get a $502 tax cut under Obama's plan. McCain's plan, by contrast, would leave that person's taxes unchanged." [Factcheck.org, 7/8/08]
Annenberg Fact Check: Budget Resolutions Do Not Alter The Tax Code. Factcheck.org wrote, "As we have described before, budget resolutions basically set targets for appropriations committees to use. They are more like guidelines than actual rules. And, like many budget resolutions, this one passed on a party-line vote, with just one Democrat and two Republicans crossing party lines." On July 3rd, 2008 Factcheck.org wrote that "Budget resolutions merely set targets for tax-writing and appropriations committees and don't alter the tax code directly." [Factcheck.org, 7/8/08; Factcheck.org, 7/3/08]
MSNBC: The Budget Resolution Is Not A Law And Is Not Binding. First Read at MSNBC wrote, "The budget resolution is NOT/NOT a law, NOT binding. (The President of the United States doesn't even sign it.) Instead, it's a blueprint of sorts that gives guidance to how congressional tax writers write tax laws in the Finance Committee. That panel is not bound to what the budget says, and often votes to "waive" budget rules. [MSNBC, 7/7/08]
SCRIPT: He promises more taxes on small business, seniors, your life savings, your family. Painful taxes, hard choices for your budget. Not ready to lead. That's the real Obama.
RESPONSE: OBAMA PLAN WILL CUT TAXES ON MOST AMERICANS, INCLUDING ELIMINATING INCOME TAXES ON SENIORS MAKING LESS THAN $50,000
Obama Plan: Eliminate Income Taxes for Seniors Making Less than $50,000: Barack Obama will eliminate all income taxation of seniors making less than $50,000 per year. This proposal will eliminate income taxes for 7 million seniors and provide these seniors with an average savings of $1,400 each year. Under the Obama plan, 27 million American seniors will also not need to file an income tax return. [Barack Obama Economic Plan]
Obama Plan: Provide a Tax Cut for Working Families: Obama will restore fairness to the tax code and provide 150 million workers the tax relief they need. Obama will create a new "Making Work Pay" tax credit of up to $500 per person, or $1,000 per working family. The "Making Work Pay" tax credit will completely eliminate income taxes for 10 million Americans. [Barack Obama Economic Plan]
Obama Plan: Simplify Tax Filings for Middle Class Americans: Obama will dramatically simplify tax filings so that millions of Americans will be able to do their taxes in less than five minutes. Obama will ensure that the IRS uses the information it already gets from banks and employers to give taxpayers the option of pre-filled tax forms to verify, sign and return. Experts estimate that the Obama proposal will save Americans up to 200 million total hours of work and aggravation and up to $2 billion in tax preparer fees. [Barack Obama Economic Plan]
OUTSIDE OBSERVERS AGREE: CLAIMS THAT OBAMA WILL RAISE TAXES ARE "WRONG," "FALSE," "MISLEADING"
McCain's Chief Economic Advisor: "I Used To Say That Barack Obama Raises Taxes…I Stand Corrected." "Take this one, for instance: 'The choice in this election is stark and simple,' John McCain said at recent Denver event, repeating a phrase that is a staple of his stump speech. 'Senator Obama will raise your taxes. I won't.' Seems clear enough, right? You already know the old argument: Republicans cut taxes, Democrats raise them. Except it's not true, at least not in the way that it seems. But don't take my word for it. Here is Douglas Holtz-Eakin, McCain's chief economic policy adviser. 'I used to say that Barack Obama raises taxes and John McCain cuts them, and I was convinced,' he told me in a phone interview this week. 'I stand corrected [about Obama's plans].'" [Time, 7/24/08] - thejimmyo, on 08/10/2008, -2/+59The non-partisan Annenberg Public Policy Center is pretty good. And they also found the McCain ad to be way off base.
http://www.factcheck.org/elections-2008/more_tax_d ... - rebotfc, on 08/10/2008, -3/+56I think this is a great new tactic in tackling smears, and unsubstantiated ads head on. Anything that counteracts lies by any politician democrat or republican is a good thing!
but yeah, nothing about this was "epic pwnage" - fr0ng, on 08/10/2008, -2/+38The sad thing is that a good majority of people believe anything they see on TV. Also, I love how McCain STILL doesn't understand how YouTube will come back to haunt him. For once, these politicians are actually being accountable for what they say.
- fuze44, on 08/10/2008, -12/+43EPIC PWNAGE
FTW
OMG
EVAR!1!
That ***** is getting old. - Bith8654, on 08/10/2008, -3/+28No it's safer to find out the truth for yourself rather than just going "You two are arguing so I don't trust either of you." By that reasoning the liar wins because now you distrust the person who wasn't being dishonest, assuming one of them was honest.
- Stormwern, on 08/10/2008, -3/+26Well, it's epic in the sense that it's coherent and specific, if the news media did this then attack adds may not have been nearly as effective..
- Gorgonzola44, on 08/10/2008, -5/+27I think I've finally determined McTrollupyoucunt's campaign strategy. His staffers have come to the realization that any informed voter with half a brain will vote Obama come November. Therefore, the strategy is to target the uninformed by simply lying (ex.: taxes), hoping his targets won't bother to make the effort to check if his accusations are true. Hopefully, the American people will take the extra step to become informed and not allow McCain to weasel his way into the White House.
- calebian, on 08/10/2008, -1/+22this should run as a national campaign add
- lsumed, on 08/10/2008, -1/+21I want that poster.
- FlaG8r, on 08/10/2008, -5/+23No, we never have and we never will. Grow up and deal with it.
- ZenMojo, on 08/10/2008, -1/+17Wow, someone dugg you down for citing sources.
- ZenMojo, on 08/10/2008, -5/+21So...basically McCain's campaign is built on a pile of easily debunked ***** and he still rides around in the "Straight Talk Express." There should just be a series of ads calling John McCain a liar while at the same time citing proof that he's lying; that would get some mileage.
- ieee, on 08/10/2008, -1/+16I watch something like that and I am amazed that the right wing diggtards out there can hatefully go on about "Obama's 'LIES'".
- WasabiBomb, on 08/10/2008, -0/+15They're not afraid. It's in their best interests to keep the election as close as possible, so they get the highest ratings they can. It's not news, it's entertainment.
- inactive, on 08/10/2008, -3/+17So you think the republican strategy of electing actors to pretend that they are running the government is a good idea?
- SteveSgt, on 08/10/2008, -2/+15Like who for example? A fortune 500 business titan? A military dictator? A violent revolutionary? Who are you suggesting you'd rather be governed by than a politician?
- Indiscipline, on 08/10/2008, -1/+14What video were you watching?
- HHP2K, on 08/10/2008, -1/+1215% is, in reality, a pretty damn good lead.
- KJSSJK, on 08/11/2008, -2/+13Unfortunately for Team Obama, the other 95% of the electorate that doesn't obsessively monitor Youtube will take McCain's claims at face value.
- IneedaSN, on 08/10/2008, -0/+10I can think of an easy way to pay for everything END THE WAR
- duckley, on 08/10/2008, -0/+10He's got to debunk ads ON TV, immediately WHILE McCain is running his attacks.
If a McCain attack is running AND an Obama debunk is running at the same time, ONLY then will people see the LIES of the scumbag McCain et al. - idleidol, on 08/10/2008, -2/+12Thats why you eliminate the tax loopholes and preferential treatment to begin with.
Your argument is basically that is policy should be based around the assumption that the rich will launder their money anyways, and thus we should just tax the middle income/poor so they can keep on avoiding their tax obligations with less effort?
Dumbass. - fuzzynyanko, on 08/10/2008, -1/+11Obama needs to counterattack like he did in the primaries.
- RuSTeDs, on 08/10/2008, -0/+9Thats true. And the only way to watch this "counter-Ad" is through youtube, which the Low IQ voters probably never heard of. I doubt 'ol Gramps in mobile, Alabama is gonna get on youtube from his ranch and watch this piece. I hope Obama is cooking a wild october surprise for Mad Dog McCain, who probably has one ready for Obama.
- kierucom, on 08/10/2008, -1/+10I think this 'backroom cubicle' is a great place. He is friendly and a relaxed, but within a busy-seeming work environment that many American's can relate to. It's too long to ever be an effective television commercial; but as a viral-style internet ad I think it is very effectively done.
- silferno, on 08/10/2008, -1/+10Does it matter where?
- Lynx55, on 08/10/2008, -3/+12I think this is great! He comes off very sincere, which is maybe what Obama needs to counteract all of this. A fresh face, speaking the truth. I think this should be a TV ad. Excellent!
- EtherGnat, on 08/10/2008, -0/+9"if the news media did this then attack adds may not have been nearly as effective.."
I think the most important contribution our news organizations could make is to slice and dice campaign ads for truth; instead they just repeat them and give the candidates free air time. I've written repeatedly to my news organizations and FactCheck.org trying to get them to partner for news segments with no response. If more people demanded fact checking perhaps it would be more effective, though. - JoeVet, on 08/10/2008, -0/+9This is a bad ad. Obama is unfortunately taking the high road and trying to argue facts while the GOP are hunkering down in the mud and filth as per protocol. This is bad for Obama because the American people tend to confuse mudslinging and baseless attacks with personal strength and fortitude. They rarely see it as the childish playground name calling that it really is. Unless Obama starts with similar attacks the American people will see him as weak. All McCain has to do now is to emphasize Obama's high intelligence and that will be the end of him.
- LD1o1, on 08/10/2008, -0/+8Unless the tooth fairy decides to run, no... you will have to spend some time educating yourself, open up some dialogue with those who you trust and feel are best qualified to discuss the important subjects, and go out and vote for the person / candidate you feel will best serve the country.
- Bartboy919, on 08/10/2008, -0/+8Isnt making campaign videos on a campaign your job if you work for that said campaign?
- KDX200rider, on 08/10/2008, -5/+13Any link that contains "EPIC PWNAGE" in the title, effectively loses any credibility. I hear your mommy calling.
- jordanlgta, on 08/10/2008, -0/+8What's with that guy that keeps peering at the camera in the background?
- Mejari, on 08/10/2008, -1/+9Except this isn't an ad, it's not on tv, it's just this Obama staffer getting pissed off that his boss is getting slammed for things that just aren't true and made a video. I don't think the 'junior director' of anything has the authorization to release an ad.
- BotchaMcCoola, on 08/10/2008, -0/+8That is all just campaign rhetoric. Remember all the conservative things W said to hoodwink people like me?
- funkyloki, on 08/10/2008, -1/+9And THAT is exactly what is wrong with this country and the overall electorate. When you won't take the time to read something that might prove to be useful, or in the least, teach you something you did not all ready know, then you are the dumber for it. Not everything can be summed up in 15 seconds or two sentences.
- ChuckDees, on 08/10/2008, -0/+8Things like this need to be shown on TV though.
Low information voters will never see that rebuttal.
So it really will not matter what gets pointed out as a lie or not. - fafnir314, on 08/10/2008, -0/+8We are not such big fans of taking the extra step, actually. That's why negative campaigning works.
- WasabiBomb, on 08/10/2008, -0/+7The answer? No.
A heck of a good start? Yes. - EarlOfLade, on 08/10/2008, -5/+12Alas, the experience with US voters are not stellar, so it would not come as a surprise if US elected McMoron over Obama.
I wonder why nobody is over McCheater for his disgusting treatment of his ex-wife along with how he cheated on her with Cindy. Is that what republicans call "Family values"? - magamiako, on 08/10/2008, -0/+7It has to do with the fact that their health is on the way down as opposed to on the way up. They should have more money available for medical expenses, and due to medical related problems they may also be out of work for more than your average 30 year old employee.
I know it's easy to say this now, but it would be different for you if you were in that situation I'm sure. - chevyorange, on 08/10/2008, -1/+8Then you deserve whatever comes your way, good or bad. Moron.
- funkyloki, on 08/10/2008, -1/+8Did you stop the video before completing it, because what you just said is definitely incorrect.
- neonoodle, on 08/10/2008, -1/+8Every child's childhood goal is to be President, or a fire fighter. Some of us grow out of it, but having that as a childhood goal isn't the sign of a career politician.
