FTA: Allan Nairn, Award-winning journalist who has reported from Indonesia for years. In 1999, he broke the story on Dennis Blair’s secret meeting with Indonesian generals to affirm U.S. support for their violent crackdown on East Timorese. - chumprock, on 01/07/2009, -22/+82Thank you for voting, here's your cute little sticker.
Remember to pick up some free samples of anal lube on your way out.... - bradysbeau, on 01/06/2009, -11/+55Dugg, shouted and signed. Thanks.
- TheImaginator, on 01/07/2009, -9/+51He's picked Hilary Clinton for Secretary of State, apparently an RIAA lawyer for his Justice dept (and what would the RIAA know about justice?) and now this fella.
Hope? - inactive, on 01/07/2009, -15/+49Wikipedia has a passable introduction to this dark chapter of American history.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indonesian_occupation ...
The plight of the East Timorese resonates with the situation the Palestinians face: genocide at the hands of a powerful and evil neighbor, bankrolled by the USA taxpayer. - zhepp, on 01/07/2009, -16/+46You all realize he was in the military and as such he had to follow orders I'm sure there is a lot more behind it all and most of the information probably won't be available to the public. He could be a bad choice he could be a good choice, time will tell.
- inactive, on 01/07/2009, -22/+52*****. Now i wish i had voted for that war-monger McCain and his brain-dead beauty queen.
Oh, wait, no. i still made the right choice. - algaeturd, on 01/08/2009, -5/+33Says the dude on his couch from behind his laptop with a Big Mac sitting off to the left and a beer to the right.
If Bush's destruction of our nation didn't start a riot, you think THIS will? That's what I love about Ameircans...so far out of the real ***** world that they can't even think straight anymore.
Destroy the constitution, start a war based on false intelligence, kill hundreds of thousands of innocent people....america yawns.
But, oh, jesus christ, goddamn....Obama appoints someone you disagree with and you're going to riot??
You're a goddamn fool. I mean that 100%. ***** off. - kimsun, on 01/07/2009, -21/+45I told you so...
gullible bots, sheesh. - SuperMoses, on 01/07/2009, -3/+21People should have seen this coming. It's not like VP pick was any less hawkish.
- inactive, on 01/08/2009, -13/+31Geez Obama apologists are just as pathetic as the Bush apologists.
- LOCK3D, on 01/08/2009, -2/+20That kind of assumption is one of the major problems with your country. You see only two options. Both of which are always establishment approved politicians who will never change a damn thing. If they were going to actually change anything, they would never get the nomination.
You will never have change for the better as long as you continue to vote Republican or Democrat unless you manage to completely take over the primary process. - APHughes, on 01/07/2009, -15/+31Why do people blindly support Obama?
- AladinSane, on 01/08/2009, -0/+16You're not making your "he's a tool" argument very convincingly. Water skiing behind a Destroyer sounds pretty awesome to me.
- davidg11, on 01/08/2009, -13/+28Did anyone else notice this story did NOT come from the Huffington Post?
I guess they're only liberal when it suits them to be.
Sad. - whatthefu, on 01/07/2009, -5/+20Cool, maybe posting comments in digg articles about Obama will help your cause.
- heystoopid, on 01/07/2009, -3/+17But then again it was never a secret meeting and how soon people forget the Clinton Administration actually pressured Indonesia via the same Adml Blair under very strict orders to deliver a set message in very specific terms which scared the living daylights out of both the corrupt one brain cell a time Generals of Indonesia such as Wiranto and the then civilian replacement leader BJ Habibe to allow the independence plebiscite to recreate the independent enclave of East Timor again .
Some days it is convenient for some to over look or ignore the real facts in history . - kooredaan, on 01/07/2009, -7/+21While I know little about this guy, my comment continues to be about the comments.....
Seems like people want Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck as the people assigned for Hope and Change.
I didn't vote for our current President, but I gave him the benefit of the doubt for the first few years. President Elect doesn't even get in office and people are mocking him.
Oh well.... - relaxeder, on 04/17/2009, -0/+13No, McCain just ran on promise and reform.
- inactive, on 01/07/2009, -1/+14They don't want Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck, they just want politicians with decades of experience, who in the course of their entire lives have never once met a single person who did anything wrong, and who vote the right way every single time, regardless of whether what is viewed as "right" changes or not.
Easy to find, really. - Doxocopa, on 01/07/2009, -5/+17The most awful betrayal to the Timorese people – after Portugal abandoned it - come from Australia. This is a forgotten history: the ONLY thing that avoided the Japanese Imperial Army to land ashore in Northern Australia Territory (Darwin) was that they were stopped at East Timor: Australians and timorese fought side by side against the Imperial Army in Timor. Japan didn't respected Portugal's neutrality during WWII.... many timorese died in the occupation, many women were raped, many atrocities committed, etc....
Than what happened? - Because of the Timor Gap Oil drilling, Australian PM simply handed East Timor to Ali Alatas ... Greed is still destroying our world and the people that live in it! - wjappe, on 01/08/2009, -2/+14I didn't vote for McCain either. To me it was really no choice at all.
- davidg11, on 01/08/2009, -9/+20Really? I thought for months there DIGG was the Huffington Post home page mirror.
- rald84, on 01/08/2009, -1/+12the irony is that paul supports the electoral college system, which is winner takes all in each state. that is what contributes to a two party system at the presidential level.
- inactive, on 01/07/2009, -9/+20Nobody has a clean record when they are involved in international affairs.
- shankari46, on 01/07/2009, -19/+29Who gets in trouble for our unwaivering support of Israel who commits genocide against the Palestinians?
- e1ioan, on 01/08/2009, -7/+17I don't think Obama is picking those people, I think Obama was picked by those people to be their puppet.
- Sluglas, on 01/08/2009, -4/+14This just gets better by the day.
- wjappe, on 01/08/2009, -0/+9@ LOCK3D, I agree completely, I liked the "establishment approved politicians who will never change a damn thing". I don't think there is a better way to put it.
- aletoledo, on 01/07/2009, -1/+10Wow it does sound very similar to what happens in Gaza in terms of the blockade and control of basic human necessities.
- alais, on 01/08/2009, -3/+12Tunnel vision much?
- zhepp, on 01/07/2009, -5/+14Not really, I am unforgiving when it comes to most things, but military people are always hard to judge and I'm sure if it comes into question too much there will be congressional investigations and we will learn more, until then I'll just have to hope Obama makes the right choices as much as he can. By the way I'm not a Obama fan boy, I'm republican (by their old standards not their new leadership), though I voted for him and I place my trust hoping he does whats right for us or we will need the lube.
- kidcodea, on 01/08/2009, -6/+15because those were the only 2 choices werent they, blind american?
- solmakou, on 01/08/2009, -3/+11This just in American interests have armed terrorists and assisted genocides across the planet.
He's a ***** Admiral, it was his job. He wouldn't be in the service had he refused. - billraydrums, on 01/08/2009, -5/+13Wow he sure is picking some ***** team members lately....Ugh is this the same guy with the "CHANGE" banner? Seems like all his picks are against the idea of Change.
Starting to smell funny around here.... - nextekcarl, on 01/08/2009, -0/+8What sane person would run for congress? I wouldn't. There's a reason so many of these guys are corrupt. Some of them didn't start out that way, but selling your soul off a little at a time to get what you think is the "Greater Good" done as a compromise does that to you after a while.
- SuperMoses, on 01/07/2009, -3/+11I love how you think criticism of Israel's government makes someone a bigot. Great logic.
- sumeetg, on 01/08/2009, -0/+8Dugg for Democracy Now; they always speak the truth when other won't.
- alais, on 01/07/2009, -3/+11I don't recall McCain running on hope or change
- algaeturd, on 01/08/2009, -5/+13Seriously...admit that you know nothing about Timor, genocide and Dennis Blair. I'm willing to bet my house that less than 8% of the republitards stroking off in this thread to 'obama ***** up!' don't have a ***** CLUE about any of the above.
You, like all your other parrots, are trying to mock Obama because you think you're supposed to.
You think THIS is a bad move?
WHERE IN THE ***** HAVE YOU BEEN IN THE PAST 8 YEARS, you ***** moron?
So you'll sit back and watch America crumble from the inside out but Obama makes a questionable pick for an office you know little or nothing about and you're up in arms and 'told us so?'
Right. You sit back on your ass and watched Bush tear this country a new ***** and then supported McCain, no doubt.
You sure told us. Totally. Completely, dude.
Especially with that Bush vote of yours. Totally showed us.
***** hell. - tgc1, on 01/08/2009, -2/+10Wrong. Military personnel must follow LAWFUL ORDERS. They are liable to be court martialed for following unlawful orders.
- inactive, on 01/08/2009, -0/+8@AladinSane ... The only reason Israel exists is because the United States allows it to exist. Face the facts.
- inactive, on 01/08/2009, -10/+17There are other choices you know. It's the idiot masses who get herded into "1 or the other" that are responsible for the ***** our country is currently in.
I know it may not be "cool", but you can choose to vote for what is right, not just what is less-evil. - heystoopid, on 01/07/2009, -2/+9An interesting reverse spin to that which happened in real life , based on part fact and much more added BS and one that chose to basically ignore the many salient facts about the seventies happenings in South East Asia following the fall of Saigon in 1975 or the known fact that all those East Timorese refugees able to to flee the Indonesian tyranny found a full safe haven down under in Oz , free from the worst persecution without being deliberately rehoused in long term refugee camps as in most South east Asian Countries and were given the free choice to become full Oz citizens which had it hands full at the time freely accepting the Vietnamese Boat People without restrictions unlike a majority of other countries who deliberately used them as political footballs and imposed very strict quota systems like the US of A .
As for the East Timor Gap Gas Field as explored , at the time of Indonesian take over of the independent ex Portuguese colony cast adrift to fend for itself without a bean , only a small handful of selected Americans oil executives knew of the Gas fields real potential as they had a number of sea drilling oil exploration platforms active in South East Asia at that point in time and they chose not to talk to the corrupt Indonesians for fiscal reasons .
I would suggest you check the map and draw straight lines from the land boundaries to see who has the lions share of that field and it is not Indonesia . - hagfish70, on 01/08/2009, -2/+9Somebody needs a hug. Or at least a new tampon.
- odigity, on 01/08/2009, -1/+8Maybe the fact that everyone is corrupt should clue you in to some core problems with the way our modern society is organized? Maybe it's time to rethink some basic assumptions, eh?
http://www.lulu.com/content/2488026 - chellebelly, on 01/08/2009, -1/+8I watched the Democracy Now! piece on the Dennis Blair appointment. It was very interesting and insightful. I highly recommend watching it. I've yet to see some "change I can believe in", but, in all fairness, I will try to hold off on passing judgment until after January 20th. Peace. :)
- inactive, on 01/08/2009, -2/+9But yet, the Diggiots are going to defend Obama to the death because they're idiots.
- PB3K, on 01/08/2009, -15/+22CHANGE NO ONE CAN BELIEVE IN! Thank you, Mr.Obama.
