- Christianptriot, on 04/23/2008, -80/+9Actually there is geological proof, in Washington state, that the earth was covered with water at one time - globally covered. They have discovered fossils of plants in digs there of plants found only in the Middle East - and no other theory (which is what evolution is) explains how they got there.
So you can accept the theory of evolution AND the world being covered with water, OR you can disbelieve them both., But if you hold to one theory being a truth, then you must, by default, hold that both are true.- Coven, on 04/23/2008, -3/+70"and no other theory"
except plate tectonics - franklymister, on 04/23/2008, -2/+41The problems with taking the idea of a global flood literally are outlined well in this article: http://members.shaw.ca/tfrisen/evolution/Creationi ...
But to put it simply, where would you expect to get enough water to flood the earth, and where would it go afterwards?
There is evidence of a deluge in ancient times, but it would have been limited to an area around the Black Sea. A catastrophe, and enough to launch tales of a great flood, but by no means an earth-covering, continent-engulfing, Mt. Everest-drowning, worldwide flood. - gordonj, on 04/23/2008, -2/+46"Actually there is geological proof, in Washington state, that the earth was covered with water at one time - globally covered."
I'm just curious, but how does "proof" in Washington state constitute evidence of a global flood? Logically there would be geological evidence on a GLOBAL scale for a GLOBAL flood. - ApokalypseNow, on 04/23/2008, -1/+33Plant fossils in Washington are not evidence of a global flood, or even of a local flood. All this is evidence of is either a) plate tectonics and continental drift, or b) historical climate change. The problem with Creationist "interpretations" of the evidence is that they walk into the exercise with the preconceived, unevidenced notion that these events actually happened, then try to make the evidence fit that mold.
Simply put, there is no evidence of a global flood, and much evidence to the contrary.
http://www.talkorigins.org/faqs/faq-noahs-ark.html - Coven, on 04/23/2008, -0/+19Another thing, where did all the water come from, and where did it all go? There isn't enough in the ice caps to cover the planet completely.
- eir574, on 04/23/2008, -0/+34@Christianptriot:
You're illustrating one of the main problems with much of the creation "science" I've seen. You say there are fossils of plants in Washington state that are only found in the middle east and that this is evidence of a global flood. However, the fact that this evidence isn't inconsistent with a global flood doesn't mean that it's evidence that a global flood actually happened, especially not when one considers that the observation could be explained by plate tectonics and continental drift. - duke3k, on 04/23/2008, -0/+17This is all I needed to see "actually there is geological proof, in Washington state, that the earth was covered with water at one time - globally covered." Really? Washington state speaks for the entire globe somewhere in its geological history, really?
- katanaswordfish, on 04/23/2008, -0/+10For your information, the majority of the western USA including Washington and Oregon were created through millions of years of terrain accretion and tectonic movement. And the fact that you think that if you believe in 1 scientific theory, you have to believe in them all is absurd. Theories are highly-tested hypotheses with scientific backing in the form of physical and mathematical evidence. Not ever IDEA that anyone has ever had is a true theory. You can't just think of something and automatically assume it is a theory without doing multiple tests and years of research.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Accretion_%28geology% ... - lamiaconfitor, on 04/23/2008, -0/+3That isn't a theory.
- xyzvszodiac, on 04/23/2008, -1/+2ok, i've got two theories about this whole ark/flood thing. 1. there was no global flood (i watched a thing on history about speculation that an asteroid hitting the ocean could have flooded a large enough area that people there would have thought it was a world wide event when really it wasn't), just some guy who had a boat and some animals and his family and the story got embellished over time. 2. aliens from mars (yes, mars) took the dna sequence of all animals on their planet, put them in a space ship (the ark) and brought them here before their planet was destroyed by (insert your own mars destruction here). Once here, evolution took hold and changed the mars animals to what we see today. and yes, this theory means aliens put us here. you think i'm kidding, but no, i'm not, lol.

And I can tell you that the church I attend now, the church I grew up in and every church I attended between the two would tell you that putting something like that on the church sign is a very poor move from a Christian pastor.
For the record, I grew up in the Plymouth Brethren and I currently attend Willingdon Church in British Columbia.- wageslaven, on 04/23/2008, -3/+1After what I've heard recently of Mormonism and Fundamentalists in BC, I'm ashamed of my nation. I'm ashamed that you can't understand why this happens.
- issachar, on 04/23/2008, -0/+5For starters if you're talking about the recent stuff in the news in Texas relating to BC, that's the Fundamentalist Church of Later Day Saints (FLDS), which is an offshoot of the LDS church in Utah, (which is what everyone is talking about when they say Mormon). As for equating the FLDS and "Fundamentalist Christian", the two aren't even the same religion.
Stop thinking that "fundamentalist" is some sort of identifying group. It's merely a sub-group of whatever they're a fundamentalist of and it's a pretty vague sub-group at that.

- issachar, on 04/23/2008, -1/+4@masterm1nd
Oh, I fully agree that we don't want candidates being promoted on the governments dime. All religious organizations have tax exempt status, but that is an entirely separate issue. Giving the government the right to approve or disapprove religious sermons is also a terrible idea. A second bad idea doesn't make the first any better.
oh, and @wagesalven... I'm not a GOP voter. I'm not US citizen either. I'm one of your friendly neighbours to the north. Sorry, I'll try to say "eh" in my next comment. For the record, it's not illegal in Canada for pastors to tell their congregants how to vote, but they never have in any church I've been in. Actually, we seem to have a very healthy separation of church and state without legislating what pastors can and cannot say. - relic180, on 04/23/2008, -0/+2It's illegal for religious institutions to tell U.S. citizens how to vote. It's not illegal for religious institutions to SUGGEST how god would vote.
The former is technically a violation of the separation of church and state since it's essentially the church itself voting. The later is a typical manipulation of uncritical minds that religious institutions have been exploiting since the dawn of time... and essentially is a legal loophole.
Hope that answers your question. - issachar, on 04/23/2008, -0/+0@relic180...
It does answer my question thank you. And it does neatly solve the problem of not having the government tell religious leaders what they can preach. Not a bad solution given the options I guess. Although I would hope that pastors would refrain even from trying to tell me how God would vote. Certainly the pastors at the church I have attended have stayed well away from saying anything like that.
- issachar, on 04/23/2008, -11/+1uh, I think it would be a terrible idea for a pastor to tell people how to vote, but is it really *illegal* for a pastor to do so? I hope you're wrong.
- issachar, on 04/23/2008, -1/+19It's been said before, but I'll say it again here. Calling someone out for saying stupid things is not taking away their right to free speech.

- issachar, on 04/23/2008, -1/+6For starters Mohammed is THE MOST important prophet in Islam.
Secondly, you can say that Muslims, "believe in Jesus" but only by completely changing the meaning of the phrase "believe in Jesus". Muslims believe that Jesus was a prophet who was only a man. Christians believe that Jesus is fully God and fully man and is part of the trinity, (Only 1 God but eternally existing in three persons), which is to say that Jesus was present and creation and through him the world was made.
Not quite the same thing is it?
So sure you can say "Muslims believe in Jesus" if you like, but only if you're trying to mislead.- notanidiot, on 04/23/2008, -5/+5Jesus never existed. Noone back then had a Hebrew name Jesus, because the Hebrew alphabet doesn't account for the J sound. He was called Yesshwa. Christians are so stupid. Jesus is a hispanic name, you tards!

- rspeed, on 04/23/2008, -0/+2Islam teaches that Jesus was a prophet AND the Messiah, but not the son of God. Muhammad has had a greater impact on the religion as he was the last prophet, but he was not the Messiah. The guy says they "don't believe in Jesus Christ", which is ridiculous.
- issachar, on 04/23/2008, -0/+0Actually the pastor does NOT say that Muslims don't believe in Jesus Christ. He *implies* that Barak Obama does not believe in Jesus which is an entirely different stupid statement. (Considering Obama himself says he is a Christian).
However, even if he HAD said Muslims don't believe in Jesus, a sensible reading of context would lead you to conclude that a Christian pastor just *might* be using the phrase "believe in Jesus" in the sense that it's meant in every single Christian Church. (i.e. That Jesus is fully God and was not created by God, but is in fact part of the Trinity).
And given that meaning, it's completely accurate to say that Muslims don't believe that. Face it rspeed, you just made a silly comment back there...

If looking at the one letter difference between the last name of a Muslim terrorist and the last name of a U.S. Presidential candidate and asking, "Are they brothers?" is an acceptable question, why isn't it acceptable to make the analogy looking at the zero-letter difference in the last names of the Pastor Byrd and the former KKK Senator Byrd? Seems like the closer likelihood to an actual relation would be in the cases where the names ACTUALLY matched, instead of where they didn't.- monroylobo, on 04/23/2008, -1/+1first names of candidate and terrorist...

They also vote and will unfortunately put another Republican in office this time. Obama can't win a state that actually matters in terms of the general election. I think Obama's a great guy but America will not vote a bi-racial man into office this time. I come form a multi-racial family and I'm a Dem. but issues matter to me more than statements.

- Andrwmorph, on 04/23/2008, -0/+1Whats so bad about a bi-racial president?
- rezist, on 04/23/2008, -0/+2kday I don't get dugg down outside of threads full of people who refuse to be open minded (religious threads, political threads, sports, social issues, drugs) unless I intend to illicit a negative response. My views were presented in a straight forward manner as they consistently are. I am dugg down due to the passionate Obama supporters who disagree. The number of pro-Obama front pagers are not reflective of our Dem. parties stance. Clinton hasn't seen any positive stories here, I believe that is reflective of the demographics of Digg and our biases which are ill founded.
Andrwmorph there is nothing wrong with a bi-racial anything, I'm not sure why people are so blind to the racial tension in our country. Race relations in America are absolutely at a boiling point, although certain areas are worse than others. I wouldn't be surprised, although I would be extremely angry and saddened, if A minority presidential candidate was hurt or killed purposely.

I hate being called a redneck, though a lot of people around me see that as a status thing, just like how some people call themselves or friends a *****. - thehuntedpossum, on 04/23/2008, -5/+1you actually think those people give enough of a ***** to vote? every election, there are millions spent to get just those sort of people out to vote, but to no avail.
- 22magnum, on 04/23/2008, -6/+4yea... thats not stereotyping...
- JCPahl, on 04/23/2008, -2/+3How's this for stereotyping: anyone who references firearms in their screenname is a redneck.
- SpanOfTheBow, on 04/23/2008, -1/+3JCPahl, are you offended that someone disagrees with stereotyping, so you have to stereotype them? What if he were a police officer or in the military? What if he's into guns because he knows sometimes they are necessary. Maybe someone he knows was hurt or killed by another person, like I do -
A. MY BEST FRIEND WAS ROBBED AT GUNPOINT, AND NOT IN A "BAD NEIGHBORHOOD"
B. I KNOW PEOPLE WHO HAVE BEEN SHOT - EXCLUDING VETERANS
C. A FRIEND OF MINE WAS A VICTIM OF A CARJACKING, AND HIS CAR WAS FOUND TORCHED, IN A FIELD
D. A FRIEND OF MINE WAS MURDERED BY SOMEONE WHO RAN HIM OVER, THEN BACKED OVER HIM AGAIN, AFTER THE MURDERER'S FRIENDS NEARLY HAD MY FRIEND UNCONSCIOUS. A GUN COULD HAVE SAVED MY FRIEND'S LIFE, WHETHER BY DETERRENCE OR BY KILLING THE ONE WHO INTENDED TO KILL.
If you think I only know a lot of people who get into bad situations, think again. My best friends are physicists, engineers, doctors, language specialists, artists, IT-types, psychologists, among other things. If you think I'm a redneck, then you'd have to redefine your stereotype of "redneck". I've been tested by a neuropsychologist to be a genius. Any genius can be an ignoramus or a bigot, too, but I am neither, and I do not allow myself to make ignorant judgment of others. I don't need to have the mind I do to realize that if the law-abiding among us had no firearms, we'd be ignorant, because from small-time criminals to organized crime, we would be pushovers. The only solution is to melt down all firearms and munitions, globally. But, the cat has been out of the bag since gunpowder made its debut, and too much money is involved for there to be a global revolution against lethal weapons.
So, JCPahl, you need to get out more, or stop sheltering yourself. If you get out and start talking to people, you will find out that you have a connection to someone who has been on at least one end of the barrel. Excluding veterans.
AND, IF YOU ARE UNFORTUNATE ENOUGH TO LOSE SOMEONE YOU LOVE TO MURDER, YOU WILL FIND YOURSELF RE-THINKING YOUR IDEAS ABOUT FIREARMS. DON'T PRETEND YOU KNOW WHAT'S BEST FOR EVERYONE WHEN YOU HAVE LIVED A SHELTERED LIFE. LOOK IN THE EYES OF PEOPLE WHOSE LOVED ONES HAVE BEEN MURDERED, AND TELL THEM YOU THINK ONLY REDNECKS AND THUGS WANT GUNS.
YOU ARE FORTUNATE THAT HEARTBREAKING LOSS HAS NOT CAUSED YOU TO CONFRONT THE FRAGILE ILLUSION THAT EVERYTHING AROUND YOU IS PEACEFUL AND NICE. IF YOU FAVOR PACIFISM, I RESPECT THAT ABOUT YOU, AND I TRULY HOPE YOU NEVER HAVE TO EXERCISE THAT PACIFISM IN THE FACE OF POSSIBLE GUNFIRE.- JCPahl, on 04/23/2008, -1/+1Whoa, there. This assumption that I'm against firearms is pure inference on your part; my comment was entirely tongue-in-cheek. C'mon, it's pretty funny that the person getting upset about rednecks being stereotyped fits the stereotypical bill of the redneck, isn't it? Just poking fun is all. For the record, I'm with you as an enormous fan of the 2nd Amendment.
But why would you respect pacifism? Isn't pacifism an immoral concept, in that it requires others to fight the necessary battles that you avoid? I have no respect for pacifists, so we can argue that if you like. - davewashere, on 04/23/2008, -1/+1There's a difference between recognizing the necessity of guns in certain situations and using a specific gun as your online identity. Face it, if you identify so closely with firearms that you want one to be the name that people call you by, you will be stereotyped as a redneck.
- JCPahl, on 04/23/2008, -1/+1Whoa, there. This assumption that I'm against firearms is pure inference on your part; my comment was entirely tongue-in-cheek. - blagoaw, on 04/23/2008, -3/+0As I understood it, the guy being reviled/persecuted in Barack Obama, and the guy doing the reviling/persecuting is the inconsiderate ass. Considering he's not a Muslim (sure, he may have lingering Muslim sympathies -- and if so, I would consider that valuable given our present geopolitical climate, but that's for another topic..), it's got a little added complication.. but it is apparent that reviling a man for being a Muslim is something that this pastor would feel content to do. The implication is that perhaps this is questionable behavior coming from a guy who presents himself as a follower of the Bible (there's ample cause in there to stomp and squash the ***** out of the heathen faiths as well if you like, but if he chooses to do that, it is revealing of character).
- blagoaw, on 04/23/2008, -0/+2never mind my comment above. now that I read the matthew quote again, I can see that it was a pretty serious misinterpretation.

- shawn1122, on 04/23/2008, -4/+3Yes, because that verse obviously means that God wants us to annoy and piss off as many people as we can. It isn't hard to interpret verses from the bible, but I guess if you dont believe in it, you are bound to interpret it in the worst way possible. What I see from that verse is: if other people are angry at you and being hateful towards you just because you are Christian, then, if you dont respond negatively, you will be blessed. I guess people will just read into things the way that they want to..

- notthatnoise, on 04/23/2008, -2/+2yes that makes sense, the typical digg user likes things they agree with, and the typical digg user doesn't believe in the bible, the point of posting this quote is to show the hypocricy of this pastor

- namredips, on 04/23/2008, -0/+3Any sentence, biblical or not, taken out of context is dangerous. However, in this particular verse it is most key to understand the "... falsely, for my sake" portion. As if that portion of the sentence is not true, then the beginning of the sentence is not true. In other words, if one is being persecuted truthfully.. not necessarily blessed. If one is being persecuted for falsely, but not for Christ's sake... again not necessarily blessed. So it at least begs the question of whether or not what the pastor (or obama depending on your perspective) is doing is for Christ's sake
- giveer, on 04/23/2008, -24/+12Okay, yeah, see it says: "People will revile you and persecute you for my sake." it DOESN'T say "People will revile you and persecute you because you're an inconsiderate ASS." - jennyfofenny, on 04/23/2008, -1/+0Catholicism is a Christian religion and I'm pretty sure in the Roman Catholic church there is a hierarchy. Mortal sins(from the Ten Commandments) are weightier than other sins.
- halleyscomet, on 04/23/2008, -0/+1@jennyfofenny
According to the Bible itself, ALL sins are equal and we are ALL equally deserving of damnation. - jennyfofenny, on 04/23/2008, -0/+1The phrase is used in I John 5.16 -17: "If you see your brother or sister committing what is not a mortal sin, you will ask, and God will give life to such a one - to those whose sin is not mortal. There is sin that is mortal; I do not say you should pray about that. All wrongdoing is sin, but there is sin that is not mortal."
Apparently you can go to Hell for either, but the Bible does distinguish a difference (as do the Ten Commandments).
- asauterChicago, on 04/23/2008, -2/+31According to the bible, we're all brothers right? So I fail to see the point of the reverends question. He himself, by his teachings, is a brother of Osama Bin Laden and Barack Obama. Unless he forgot about a pretty important passage: "For ye are all the children of God"... which is kind of the point of the whole bible, you know "love they brother"
but maybe the good reverend can take this passage to heart " You, then, why do you judge your brother or sister? Or why do you treat your brother or sister with contempt? For we will all stand before God's judgment seat."- jstone, on 04/23/2008, -1/+7You're not reading the Bible in the context of what it is: a tribal religious book. It is speaking to the Hebrews, saying that they are the children of god. Other tribes/races/people were originally not included in that statement. It was only after the Romans got their hands on it that it became a blanket statement about all of the religion's followers.
- halleyscomet, on 04/23/2008, -0/+1No, it was Jesus who expanded the definition to all mankind, a shift that caused major debates between Paul and Peter over the issue of circumcising gentiles. That circumcision debate by the way, is the reason Christians today aren't supposed to be bound by the purity laws, even though fundamentalist pastors will gladly pick and choose the purity laws that they want to force people to follow.

- insllvn, on 04/23/2008, -3/+5If this pastor represents the South, does Jeremiah Wright represent the North? Try not to sink to that level.
- franklymister, on 04/23/2008, -3/+4Try not to link the decorated Marine, highly educated Rev. Wright with this idiot.
- insllvn, on 04/23/2008, -0/+5Oh certainly, Rev Wright is a far better man than the obviously racist and bigoted pastor of this church. I may even feel some sympathy or agreement with Wrights sentiments. I just object to the idea he represents the South, anymore than Rev Wright and his America-critical view and conspiracy centric rants represent some imagined effete socialist North.
I should point out, what is more offensive than either generalization is this statement, made by Pastor Roger Byrd : "It's simply to cause people to realize and to see what possibly could happen if we were to get someone in there that does not believe in Jesus Christ." The idea that someone who did note believe in Jesus would be categorically unqualified to hold the office of president defies words in terms of its bigotry and ignorance. It dwarfs both the stupid cheap shot at Obama's name on the sign, and anything Wright may ever have dreamed of uttering. - katanaswordfish, on 04/23/2008, -0/+2I love how people are so mad about Reverend Wright saying critical things about the United States government. In my opinion, the ones who truly love this country the most are the ones who can look at it critically and hope for change. McCain is dubbed a hero by the media because he served in Vietnam, but is he any more of a hero than any other soldier in that war, or any other war even? Wright served honorably as a marine and when he speaks honestly about the fact that western influence has been a huge factor in causing tension in the middle east, he gets called a vagrant for expressing his opinions. Why is it that we live in a country that claims to embrace freedom of speech when ANY criticism of this country at all is completely taboo and labeled as un-patriotic??? Wright said some controversial things, as did MLK in his time if you look at his speech history, but at least Wright didn't make up blatant ***** lies about a political candidate in order to sway ignorant people's votes. Free speech is one thing, defamation is another thing entirely.

- Christianptriot, on 04/23/2008, -11/+4So you admit that you are a monkey's uncle?
- DekarCorvus, on 04/23/2008, -2/+15i'm not sure you understand how evolution works friend. we don't downgrade to monkeys...therefor we can't be a monkeys uncle...as that implies our kids become lesser primates....
your lack of understanding on the subject implies your a creationist.- DragoonWraith, on 04/23/2008, -0/+2Actually, it is entirely possible for evolution to downgrade species.
For example, intelligence is probably the most striking adaptation that man has compared to the rest of the planet - we are without question the smartest animals we have encountered. However, smart people do not have as many children, because their intellect gives them "artificial" reasons not to - the average American could relatively easily afford to raise two dozen children to maturity, but nearly everyone does not because they are smart enough to realize that we'd rather not.
A less intelligent mutation might not consider those possibilities, and go ahead and have a dozen or more children, thereby greatly increasing the relative chance of his genes continuing on compared to others. While that extreme lack of intelligence would likely make mating harder, less than average intelligences are still capable of finding mates, and are far more likely to have children in abundance. These mates are, most likely, also of less than average intelligence, since for the most part humanity seeks out mates of similar intelligence.
These children are further less likely to be schooled, and therefore likely to also end up finding mates of similarly low intelligence.
These trends make it very possible for intelligence to evolve downwards, rather than upwards, at least until the point at which the lack of intelligence creates difficulty surviving and procreating.
So yes, someone could conceivably be a monkey's uncle. Wouldn't exactly be any monkey we currently know, and it certainly would not happen in just two generations, so it would really be a few million times great uncle, but nonetheless the statement could hold water.
Of course, your guess that Christianptriot is an ignorant bigot is no less likely.

- ruyen, on 04/23/2008, -2/+14If you read the article it reads that the whole congregation voted unanimously to keep the message on the sign. So in this case, the blind does lead the blind. While drbyers comment was a bit of a blanket statement about many souther churches, he didn't say all Southerners were like this.
Kinda like how Obama didn't say all Pennsylvanians are bitter. In describing who he was talking about, he said things like "In a lot of these communities.."; "a part of them.."; "another layer of.."; "in some of these small towns, like a lot of small towns in the midwest". Hardly a blanket statement about all Pennsylvanians like Clinton and the media spun it.

- JesusHatesYou, on 04/23/2008, -9/+4The U.S. will never elect a black president as long as the country is a white majority. Whites would rather vote for a rotting dead white corpse than a smart black man. It's sad that Obama even has to struggle to beat Hillary or McCain. McCain admits he knows nothing about economics and he's in favor of keeping the troops in Iraq indefinitely. His only platform is that he's white which means he's more than qualified for whites in the South.

- DragoonWraith, on 04/23/2008, -0/+0Moron.
He was criticizing racist whites, not being one.
That said, I think he substantially overestimates the power of racist whites. Yes, they did elect Bush because the intelligent people in the country couldn't be bothered trying to overcome the media's BS, but after Bush they aren't likely to let that happen again.
While I support Obama, I don't think it's 'sad' that he has to struggle against Hillary or McCain. It's important to have options in a democratic system, and they represent those options. That the Republicans chose McCain over, say, Huckabee, is a sign of hope in that portion of the country for me. Because while I would not vote for him, I find him infinitely more acceptable as a leader than Huckabee, who I view as perhaps even worse than Bush.- kawaiirobo, on 04/25/2008, -0/+1I understand he was criticizing racist whites, I called him a racist for assuming ALL white people are racist, judging by the language "Whites would rather vote for...". That statement implies all white people think the same way, hence my criticizing of HIS racist statement.

- facelesscoward, on 04/23/2008, -0/+5Clearly, Trinity United Church of Christ is a massive Islamic operating under the guise of Christianity. I mean, Rev. Wright traveled with Farrakhan to see Muammar Qaddafi. You don't get more Muslim than that!
And the sad thing is that if I read that comment posted by someone else, I wouldn't be surprised if they actually believed that, ignoring that people are free to practice Islam publicly in the United States and that people of differing religious beliefs tend to communicate.- RayinAr, on 05/04/2008, -0/+0This is very true. - franklymister, on 04/23/2008, -6/+294From the IRS web site:
In order to initiate a church tax inquiry, "The IRS can obtain the information supporting a reasonable belief from many sources, including but not limited to:
* Newspaper or magazine articles or ads,
* Television and radio reports,
* Internet web pages,
* Voters guides created and/or distributed by the church,
* Documents on file with the IRS (e.g. a Form 990-T filed by the church), and
* Records concerning the church in the possession of third parties or informants."

Official IRS policy is that all churches are prohibited from "any political campaign on behalf of (or in opposition to) any candidate for political office." They are clear that leaders of churches can speak as individuals, but that making "partisan comments in official organization publications or at official church functions" is prohibited.
