- GhostyBoy, on 01/01/2008, -2/+17If true, this is complete and utter *****. I like RP personally, and would love to get some of Obama's supporters, but not like this. Obama should be on the god-damn ballot so that his people can ***** vote for him. What the hell is wrong with this political system?
- Tex, on 07/28/2008, -5/+17Dishonest description. Dennis Kucinich is also still on the ballot, and is just as (if not more) committed to bringing the troops home as Ron Paul.
- cghp91490, on 01/01/2008, -0/+111. This is true.
2. It's not like it matters. This is all fcuking bullsh*t that Michigan's Democrats don't have a vote. We are being punished for something the citizens have no control over. Thanks, DNC. - Parisjune, on 01/01/2008, -2/+13Why would an Obama supporter vote for a Democratic rival -- I wouldn't.
- jamesalfaro, on 01/01/2008, -2/+10Biden, Edwards, Obama, and Richardson will not be on the Michigan ballot! Our political system is rigged.
- JohnnyWrath, on 01/01/2008, -0/+7Michigan conducts an open primary, meaning that voters of any partisan stripe can vote in the GOP presidential primary.
- thebuggalo, on 01/01/2008, -0/+6They withdrew because Michigan moves up their primary date, and as a result, Michigan lost all of their Delegates, so I believe those candidates who withdrew did so because they don't want to waste their time on a state that won't have a say.
- ChanceLonestar, on 01/01/2008, -4/+10Look Kuch is a good choice and most anti-war libs are down for him, Ron Paul acctually has money to spend so I'd say it's better to support him.
- Parisjune, on 01/01/2008, -4/+10Michigan Barack Obama supporters will not be able to vote for their favorite candidate in the January 15th Michigan Presidential primary. [http://mi.gov/sos/0,1607,7-127-1633_8716_47645---, ... Many voters will simply stay home, even though as taxpayers, the have paid for it. I consider this to be a serious waste of money and a missed opportunity for anti-war Democrats.
There have been a number of ideas as to how Obama supporters may best use the primary. Most of these proposals ignore the fact that the Democratic Party will not seat Michigan delegates at their national convention. Christina Montague, Coordinator of "Michiganders for Obama" has posted an announcement calling on volunteers to vote, "uncommitted". The announcement goes on to say, "… you will then be able to vote to elect "Uncommitted" Obama Delegates at the district level conventions across the state that will be held on March 29, 2008. Only members of the MDP can vote at district conventions." [http://www.michigandersforobama.com/] None of this counts if the national Democratic Party fails to seat those delegates. It is only two weeks before the primary. If they were planning on giving Michigan a break, they would have done so by now. Furthermore, most voters are not able to go through the whole process of becoming a delegate, and the their precinct probably won't even have a vacancy. Finally, Montague's' plan fails to provide a means to distinguish between Obama "uncommitted" votes and Edwards "uncommitted" votes.
Obama opted out of the Michigan primary so that Michigan could keep its delegates. This includes not registering as a write-in. The candidates that did not withdraw are responsible for Michigan Democrats losing their delegates.
One's choice of strategy will depend on one's reasons for supporting Obama. If the main reason is to oppose the war, one could try to send a message by voting for a Democrat other than hawkish Hilary Clinton. But the Democratic votes won't count, and if they did, they would support a candidate that is competing with Barack Obama for the nomination.
Then there is the way to send a message and make your vote count. First of all, let me be clear: Any person who has registered to vote, in Michigan, by December 17th can vote for either one Democrat or one Republican. You do not need to register as the member of a party. The national Republican Party is seating half of Michigan's delegates at its national convention; the Republican votes count. Those who support Obama because of his stance against the Iraq war and torture, can send a message by voting for a Republican who holds such views and has a voting record to prove it: Ron Paul.
Unlike other Republican candidates, Congressman Ron Paul opposes the continued war of occupation in Iraq. He voted against the "use of force" in Iraq. The same bill supported by Bush and Hilary Clinton that authorized the current undeclared war in Iraq. Paul believes the withdrawal of our troops should begin immediately. Ron Paul is one of only three republican candidates who oppose the use of torture on prisoners of war (Hilary Clinton is pro-torture). He is also the only Republican to oppose pre-emptive attacks such as using nuclear weapons in a first strike against Iran.
If you are a pro-peace, anti-torture Barack Obama supporter, you can send a clear unambiguous message that you oppose the Iraq war and torture. Since Paul has had fairly low numbers in the Polls, there would be little doubt where the additional votes came from. Every vote should be backed up with a letter to the Democratic National Committee and the Michigan Democratic Party.
Lastly, there is one additional bonus. If Paul wins the nomination, the peace movement will have a fail-safe in case the party nominates a pro-war Democrat like Clinton. The other part of the fail-safe would be if Obama won the nomination, but lost the general election, the new president would still bring the troops home. - savagesteve13, on 01/01/2008, -10/+15Dennis Kucinich unfortunately isn't in the running, as the CFR Democrats have already swiftboated him with the help of other CFR Republicans.
Ron Paul is the ONLY viable candidate if you are anti-war. Hillary won't get the troops home, don't fool yourself. - diffraction, on 01/01/2008, -0/+5Even if Democrats vote in Michigan, their vote means nothing as all delegates have been stripped from the State.
- carpespasm, on 01/01/2008, -0/+5Why don't you do some research. Since florida is a generally republican state, the move to shove our primary was done by the republican majority in the Florida congress. The democrats tried to get it voted down, but were unable to.
- TenebrousX, on 01/01/2008, -0/+4The Michigan legislature wanted a bigger part in the national nomination process, so they decided to hold primary elections earlier than usual. The national Democratic Party was pissed and told MI that they couldn't send any delegates to the convention. In order to stay on good relations with the party, several democrats withdrew their name from the election.
- GabrielGray, on 01/01/2008, -0/+3It's not "completely false" I suggest you do research before you go and bury an article:
"Democrats are not campaigning in Michigan because the early primary violates national party rules. Among the top three Democrats, only Clinton is on Michigan's ballot."

Right now it's a completely pointless vote. Only Clinton, Kucinich, and Gravel on the ballot and no delegates. - Parisjune, on 01/01/2008, -0/+2I don't think it was "the system" in this case. If you look at the list of candidates via the link it says that he withdrew or was withdrawn. Sounds like a screwup somewhere. That doesn't mean we shouldn't extend them an invitation.
- tynansanger, on 01/01/2008, -1/+3Edwards and Biden already withdrew. And they chose to, it was not forced on them. Shame on you for turning this into Paultard spam.
- factory81, on 01/06/2008, -0/+2I spoke with Howard Dean on this issue and he said that Michigan decided to do this on there own with no influence other then "don't do it" from the DNC. The DNC can only impose sanctions on the Michigan democratic party.
- GabrielGray, on 01/01/2008, -0/+2Not everyone is going to vote based on abortion. There are quite a few pro-choice people who can live with the idea of states determining it or simply a candidate who is pro-life.
- factory81, on 01/06/2008, -0/+2Ron Paul is the ONLY candidate? Are you delusional or something?
- GabrielGray, on 01/01/2008, -0/+2This is the confirmation for any curious about whether it's true or not:
"Democrats are not campaigning in Michigan because the early primary violates national party rules. Among the top three Democrats, only Clinton is on Michigan's ballot."

Right now it's a completely pointless vote. Only Clinton, Kucinich, and Gravel on the ballot and no delegates. - Tex, on 07/28/2008, -3/+5Because Obama won't appear on the ballot in Michigan.
- R1ng00, on 01/16/2008, -0/+1It's only a wasted vote if you vote for someone you don't agree with -- as in the "Lesser of two evils" or something of that nature. Sorry I don't agree with that type of thinking at all. I'd rather fight for this country to unite us ALL against the current political regime. I'm not a Hillary fan but I have to say I'm not Obama's fan either.
I don't really think you've checked his voting record -- he's pro war and voted to extend the Patrion Act.
http://votesmart.org/voting_category.php?can_id=94 ...
So while Obama is telling people that his not for the war he's been voting for it which in my mind makes him "identical" to Hillary in that respect. They want to keep the system status quo but they will tell you anything to get your vote. Nothing will change if you do that. You're falling for the same ol'e ***** and expecting a different outcome.
No I'd have to disagree, Ron Paul send a message to them and if they don't get it we'll have to speak louder on our own -- hopefully you'll help us when it comes time to do that.
Personally I think it's already a planned that Hillary will run against Insane McCain and she will win. There's too many uneducated people when it comes to politics, no one is willing to research whats really happening.
Hillary just recently opened the door for Bush to go to war with Iran and is passing it off with utter lies, yet.... people are still voting for her. My dad once said to me "Anyone that would allow someone to serve them a bowl of ***** should be made to eat it".
I can't help but feeling like BOTH sides are serving us just that -- so there really only is one answer for that problem .. are you ready to fight for your country? - michlibrarian, on 01/08/2008, -0/+1Hardly. Kucinich is the only traditional Democrat running. If the war were the only issue, RP would be ok. But the rest of his platform is libertarian and unacceptable to the idea of society.
- michlibrarian, on 01/08/2008, -0/+1Better than voting for a Republican reactionary.
- tekrat, on 01/06/2008, -0/+1Michigan's primary almost didn't happen. The ruling party couldn't agree on whether to have the primary before or after the Iowa primary. For a while the primary was going to canceled altogether. With how screwed up things are in that state, it doesn't surprise me that a major candidate like Obama was left off the ballot.
- electionguru, on 01/14/2008, -0/+0The Michigan delegation will be seated in the end...vote uncommitted...Ron Paul is the wasted vote...beat Hillary with uncommitted.
- Rotzooi, on 01/01/2008, -1/+1...and that's why the Democratic party has been doing so badly. And, up until some time ago, why the GOP did so well.
Support you own, whenever you can. No Obama? Vote another Democrat. - StarHollywood2, on 01/13/2008, -0/+0Hey Obama, Edwards, and Kucinich's supporters, VOTE for the Republicans... and forget Hillary.
- fadeout, on 01/01/2008, -6/+6Why is it that Ron Paul posts don't ever seem to have a bit of research invested into them?
Michigan Democratic votes don't count, this primary, because their state party officials jumped the new cut off date. Michican (pro-Obama) and Florida (pro-Clinton) both wanted to jump said cut off date for media/political attention and the DNC called them on it.
And you're out of your minds if you think an Obama supporter would vote for such an anti-abortion candidate. No way in hell. - airiox, on 01/01/2008, -3/+2This is completely false, buried as inaccurate.
This is citing a sample ballot not the actual one nor the actual and official list of candidates.
http://mi.gov/documents/sos/Presidential_Primary_C ...
That is a link to the list of candidates and surprise, surprise, Obama is on there.
