- Spamiclese, on 07/14/2009, -9/+35"She became the first black woman and the first doctor under age 40 elected to the American Medical Association's board of trustees, and in 2002 became the first black woman to head a state medical society." She's also been a doctor forever and has the backing of the President of the American Medical Association. How is this not picking someone based on qualifications? Go troll something else republican.
- Aero347, on 07/14/2009, -11/+34She treats those who cannot pay? Republicans aren't going to like this... RUSH: "LOOK! she's trying to humanize people that don't have money!"
- xshare, on 07/14/2009, -5/+25Sanjay Gupta is also incredibly qualified. There was no question of that.
- perfunction, on 07/14/2009, -0/+18At least they aren't calling her the Surgery Czar....
- kingmanic, on 07/14/2009, -1/+19Like at least 50% of America.
- 312139, on 07/14/2009, -1/+19Oh no! He took the state's only educated individual.
- kingmanic, on 07/14/2009, -8/+25Although both parties have always been guilty of it; Obama has picked more qualified people than Bush. The only qualification for top posts for Bush was that you were a rabid Republican party loyalist. It SEEMS Obama seems to be picking qualified individuals who have a democrat slant. Thats par for the course.
- askantik, on 07/14/2009, -0/+16Just FYI, Dr. Benjamin just became a government employee.
- pintomp3, on 07/14/2009, -8/+23That's right. Now they run a mere 98% of the country.
- wierdaaron, on 07/14/2009, -3/+18***** qualifications, does she believe in abortion and evolution? AMERICA MUST KNOWWWW
- TheNik, on 07/14/2009, -0/+13That's probably because she's a physician, not a researcher.
- Spudster, on 07/14/2009, -0/+13More like Michael destroyed Gupta for being the corporate hack he is.
- inactive, on 07/13/2009, -12/+24Much better than $anjay Gupta.
- Morte42, on 07/14/2009, -2/+14So animals only get run over by cars in Alabama? Idiot.
- Morte42, on 07/14/2009, -5/+16She is very much qualified, so what does it matter?
- kukurio, on 07/14/2009, -1/+11Yep, the GP assumed that the only reason Obama picked her is because she's black, despite her laundry list of qualifications. That is the very definition of racism.
- TheSexyGeek, on 07/14/2009, -3/+13Yeah. because white men are entitled to big positions right?
- otbeverly, on 07/14/2009, -1/+11Sorry, just because you're on the interwebz doesn't mean you're qualified to make judgments about others' qualifications for a cabinet position you probably know little about.
Especially if you're on Digg ... yourself. - appleofdischord, on 07/14/2009, -0/+9Sorry, but medicine, like any business, involves a lot of schmoozing and politics.
- TheSexyGeek, on 07/14/2009, -1/+10Do you charge to help people in need?
- Elranzer, on 07/14/2009, -1/+10Great. Another article where "Obama does X" and the Republicans on Digg (sorry, *cough*Libertarians*cough) complain, no matter what.
- TheSexyGeek, on 07/14/2009, -0/+9The Surgeon General is a spokesperson for public health matters. She doesn't have to invent a new artificial heart to do that job.
- Rotzooi, on 07/14/2009, -0/+9Churchill was a smoker AND a fat ass, and he saved you from speaking German. Bow down to the chainsmoking fatsos, Republican troll!
- lukelucas, on 07/14/2009, -5/+13"I don't know anything about her but..."
your comment lost all relevance at that point. do some research, then come back. - jdames1980, on 07/14/2009, -5/+13He is a corporate whore.
- kinerry, on 07/14/2009, -1/+9apparently you haven't seen the videos of him being exposed as a healthcare industry hack
- pak314, on 07/14/2009, -1/+9What's wrong with $anjay Gupta?
- methdwman3, on 07/14/2009, -3/+11Heh - rabid loyalists like Powell?
- Ryanman7, on 07/14/2009, -1/+8I dugg you up since I live here, and unfortunately he's right. The vast majority of Alabamians are hypocritical religious zealots.
There is a margin of decently intelligent people. But unfortunately the stereotype holds true. - SouthsideIrish, on 07/14/2009, -0/+7You should at least pay what you can afford to pay. Sure, you may not be able to afford the full cost of a doctor's visit, but that does not mean you cannot pay the doctor something.
- lydiasky, on 07/14/2009, -4/+11It's nice to see a doctor that cares for her patients so passionately as Dr. Benjamin. I'm anticipating her run as Surgeon General to see what she can do for us.
- michaelrsa, on 07/14/2009, -0/+6But the problem is that we as insurance and tax payers have to cover it to some extent. Sure the doctor may work pro bono but medical equipment still has to be paid for. Until the day comes when everyone receives health care the rest still have to play by the rules. All it does is pass the cost on to us. At least with universal those who do get treated will still have to pay some of it out through taxes instead of the current system where its passed on to people who pay their premiums.
I really have no qualms with either universal health care or privatized health care. Privatized works well for me but if universal was instituted in the U.S. I wouldn't complain. - SouthsideIrish, on 07/14/2009, -3/+9>She's also been a doctor forever and has the backing of the President of the American Medical >Association.
WTF! How can you be a doctor forever? How can you possibly be a doctor before you were born? - AgeofMastery, on 07/14/2009, -0/+6And the right is obsessed with the words of Rush Limbaugh who's morbidly obese, a smoker, can't get it up without Viagra and is has issues with painkiller addiction.
You were saying something there salinemist? - TheSexyGeek, on 07/14/2009, -0/+6The Surgeon General doesn't actually do surgery as part of their job. She is the chief spokesperson on matters of public health. As far as I have read, she's been serving in public healthcare in an administrative and practical capacity for a long time and has made significant achievements in that area. What more do you need?
- otbeverly, on 07/14/2009, -0/+5Dude, I can't even remember who the surgeon general was for the last eight years, maybe even longer. I think that cabinet position fell off the map after Jocelyn Elders.
- paigeinphilly, on 07/14/2009, -0/+5oh you mean her MD and MBA??
http://www.kff.org/about/benjamin.cfm
its called Google..try it sometime. - bjs3171, on 07/14/2009, -1/+6a better candidate would be someone who, say, headed a state medical society.
- pathouston22, on 07/14/2009, -10/+15So how much in back taxes does she owe?
- ousthouse, on 07/14/2009, -4/+9I'm against government health care, and because of this, I'm a big fan of Dr. Benjamin.
Dr. Benjamin understands her calling to help the underprivileged, but at the same time, she doesn't believe she's entitled to a large 6 figure salary from the government.
The world needs more Regina Benjamins and fewer government employees. - RatatRatR, on 07/14/2009, -2/+7Maybe he believes she's qualified despite her obesity.
- compulsive1, on 07/14/2009, -1/+6Let's hope she is also better than Jocelyn "it's for the children" Elders.
- kingmanic, on 07/14/2009, -0/+5Presbyterian: No actually. I'm within the range of 'ideal' weight for my height. But I'm not an American.
- Aero347, on 07/14/2009, -1/+6@Pseudorious
Actually sometimes I do. Some people I help run a home business that can't run without a working computer/server and I fix it for them. Sure I could charge $60 per hour for my services but I know what goes around comes around. They need help and I give it to them. If they can afford to give me $20 great. If not don't sweat it. It's humans helping humans get by. I still have a full time job to get myself by but I think we'd all be alot better off helping each other out instead of taking advantage of one another. - RatatRatR, on 07/14/2009, -0/+5Interesting theory, reposado.
- reposado, on 07/14/2009, -5/+9"Since 1871, the Surgeon General of the United States has been the nation's leading spokesman on matters of public health."
I personally couldnt care less if she was obese. Obesity is probably the #1 public health issue in the US.
But picking a fat surgeon general is like picking one who chain smokes... Just doesnt make sense. - inactive, on 07/14/2009, -20/+24I don't know anything about her but why can't presidents pick people based on their qualifications and not pick people to pander to a political base?
- anillop, on 07/14/2009, -0/+4The Surgeon General would have nothing to do with the pandemic. The surgeon General is more of a figurehead and the mouthpiece for the presidents health policy. The head of the CDC would be the person in charge of the handling the pandemic.
- RiperSnifle, on 07/14/2009, -0/+3It's getting harder and harder to tell who's trying to be ironic lately.
If you're not, you're an idiot. - swamp916, on 07/14/2009, -2/+6Boo Hoo dude Obama appoints a few female minorities and you are claiming there is an apartheid against white men? it is unreal to me how white men can be so self centered. White men have controlled the government since the US has existed and finally within the last 50 years women and minorities have slowly but surely gained power and now everything is about "reverse racism." The majority of politicians are still white males. The majority of supreme court judges are white males. The majority of all federal judges are white males. Your cries of mistreatment just show how warped and privileged white males are and how scared they are to give up some of their power.
What are you afraid of?? That black people or asian people or latina/os or women in general will seek revenge for the centuries of injustice that they faced? I am a white woman and I am tired of privileged white males making our race look bad! If you aren't a privileged white male then why are you so eager to support these people? Its time that poor and working class white people realize that they are being manipulated just like the other poor minorities and we should all unite against the classicism and elitism that rules our country. -
