- sheeplescareme, on 05/02/2009, -27/+112During the presidential campaign, Obama was critical of the commissions. He said, “By any measure our system of trying detainees has been an enormous failure,” and declared that as president he would “reject the Military Commissions Act.”
hundred bucks says that that is about to become another broken promise. his admin is more dangerous than that of the shrub admin - at least with shrub, people disagreed. now, we've got the neo-cons cheering him on and most of his supporters have simply become apologists for his nonsense. - loopbiz, on 05/02/2009, -38/+76Of course!
This always happens. When you aren't the one making the decisions, you can criticize all you want. You don't have all the facts and even if you do have the facts, ideology trumps facts.
When you are the guy making the decisions, you soon discover that you can't continue that ideology, you have a job to do and the buck stops with you. I've seen this happen many times. - Thumper13, on 05/03/2009, -6/+36"Reports circulating...." These were called rumors when journalism was still good.
- eco57, on 05/03/2009, -7/+33I think these 'leaks' occur sometimes because they're being used to test the waters. If they see enough people make a big stink about this, they may back off - even if it's only intended for a handful of complex (or more likely: embarrassing) detainees.
- inactive, on 05/02/2009, -14/+35@flossdaily
I'm not a Republican either. I oppose torture and Guantánamo because they are wrong, not becuase opposition to those things was politically expedient.
I think that you are an unthinking apologist of this administration. I don't think that you and the rest of the Obama club here on digg have any real dedication to human rights. I think that you used human rights as a tool to criticize Bush and gain the White House, not because torture and rendition and aggressive war and warrantless wiretapping and the suspension of habeus corpus bother you. I think that because you make excuses without any information. You always make excuses for Obama.
In other words, I think you're a hypocrite. - inactive, on 05/03/2009, -10/+29"Reports circulating in Washington...."
Get back to us when there are facts. - inactive, on 05/03/2009, -3/+21Yeah because anyone who criticizes Obama is a republican right? Stepo out of your fantasy world. America needs to learn hold individuals, not their parties accountable for their actions. Not everybody who calls out Obama for his lies is doing so because they belong to the GOP.
- AlterLite, on 05/03/2009, -12/+29Change you can believe in right? People who voted for Obama out of hatred for Bush or just being blinded by catchy slogans and speeches should be ashamed of themselves now. The only thing that was going to change was the name at the top of the org chart in the executive branch, nothing else. Yet people on the left blindly fell for chants of "Yes we can" (keep the same policies in place)... and Change you can('t) believe in.
- pnmoore, on 05/03/2009, -4/+21Oh, you mean the same hate orgy that the Democrats were so fond of having in the past....hypocrite...lol
- schmokedat, on 05/03/2009, -6/+21Name one president in your lifetime that hasn't turned out to be a complete tool. Obama is looking no different. About the best I can say about the guy is that he looks and sounds better than some, but at this point it doesn't seem like its going to go any deeper than a veneer. Underneath, it's still the same *****.
- paulmoore, on 05/03/2009, -2/+17If you can't trust politicians, then you certainly cannot trust the government.
- Logrusmage, on 05/03/2009, -1/+14Than you obviously know few Republicans. I know a very large number who were down right disgusted during his second term in particular, after they had become disillusioned by his over-spending and big government attitude.
- LotosDescendant, on 05/03/2009, -2/+14Unfortunately I doubt McCain would have been any better.
- oboshoe, on 05/03/2009, -2/+14oops..I guess change wasn't able to be had.
Better go to Plan B - "HOPE" - thrashertm, on 05/03/2009, -1/+13Some are. Most of Obama's supporters though are blind sheeple.
- CarpeFishem, on 05/03/2009, -1/+13*****. The media response to Obama's lies, goofs, and amateurism has been nothing but a giant cocksuck.
- flossdaily, on 05/02/2009, -48/+59It's too early to accuse him of breaking a promise.
Even if he does revive military courts, he may well do it in such a way that rights of detainees ARE protected.
But hey, don't let that stop you Republicans from having a good old hate orgy! - jordanlgta, on 05/03/2009, -4/+15In before some self-righteous person comes in here and states "change you can believe in" thinking they are some kind of amazing philosophical citizen of the United States...
Reserve judgement until something happens... - Logrusmage, on 05/03/2009, -0/+11Accept it is happening. All the time. Just like it happened for Bush for awhile, before conservatives finally figured out "Oh *****, he isn't really all that committed to our actual ideals."
Than the people who really have values turned on him, just like I believe the people who hold liberal values will eventually turn on Mr. Obama. - justjoehere, on 05/03/2009, -7/+18That's not what loopbiz is saying at all. He's simply pointing out that when you've been elected to a job you encounter decisions that you need to make for the best of the country, and sometimes, that isn't in line with what you originally campaigned about. No one is saying the government should be conducting anything in secret. Rather he is pointing out that when you're the one making the decision it is often harder than criticizing your predecessor. Talking about reading into things to far. FYI, reading way to much into his comments is just to espouse your viewpoint is one symptom of being brainwashed. Welcome to 1984 yourself.
- fantaman13, on 05/03/2009, -2/+12Keyword is "may". "May" doesn't do much.
- Logrusmage, on 05/03/2009, -1/+11Er... I knew plenty of Republicans who disagreed heavily with Bush all the time. Seriously, no joke.
Republican's in GOVERNMENT didn't. And you're comparing them to the people. Well, if you compare Democrat's in GOVERNMENT, to the Republican people, you'd once again find a big disparity on the people's side when it comes to dissent.
You have a broad brush right there, I suggest you stop painting only the other side with a negative color. - Brassbud, on 05/03/2009, -5/+14Exactly. Bush's policies weren't Bush's policies because he wanted to be mean, they were his policies because they were really the only option that worked. Hell the guy went into office probably wanting to party and maybe cut taxes, in other words, he would have loved to have been Clinton.
With the exception of social policies like stem cells, Obama hasn't changed anything, and that's the truth. - inactive, on 05/03/2009, -2/+11Don't worry. In 3 years the Republicans will be telling you all kinds of things you want to hear to get elected.
And then do the opposite once again. - TotalHalibut, on 05/03/2009, -15/+24Why claim he's reversed a campaign pledge when he hasn't actually reversed it? Seems a tad disingenuous to me. Sure, have the debate, but it's fallacious to make accusations on the basis of something that hasn't happened.
- RandomGorilla, on 05/03/2009, -6/+15When I see it actually happen, THEN I'll disparage it. Until then, let rumors and conjecture STAY rumors and conjecture.
- twomeyw23334, on 05/03/2009, -0/+9Last I remember, Bush's approval from Republicans was horrible, Obama's approval from Democrats is through the roof. I know many conservatives/Repubs and can't think of a single one who really liked Bush. They just thought he was a lesser evil to Kerry / Gore and publicly denounced his policy all the time.
- regeya, on 05/03/2009, -6/+15A disappointment if this comes true.
It amazes me, though, that in this day and age that people can still act surprised that a politician breaks promises. Be outraged, sure, but surprise is a bit silly. - justjoehere, on 05/03/2009, -5/+13FTA: During the presidential campaign, Obama was critical of the commissions. He said, “By any measure our system of trying detainees has been an enormous failure,” and declared that as president he would “reject the Military Commissions Act.”
How is reconvening military courts not breaking a campaign promise? - paulmoore, on 05/03/2009, -4/+12I regret falling for it :-)
- Jordan117, on 05/03/2009, -2/+9"Reports... suggest... may..."
How about we wait until something actually happens before getting all outraged.
Also, from the NY Times story:
"...outlining an administration plan to amend the Bush administration’s system to provide more legal protections for terrorism suspects."
So even if this unsubstantiated rumor is true, it will mean giving more legal rights to detainees. - ShingoEX, on 05/03/2009, -1/+8That is the most retarded post I've seen in about a month.
- mc88, on 05/03/2009, -0/+7You mean back when Fox News didn't get on their knees for the Republicans and CNN, MSNBC, all the nightly talk shows didn't get on their knees for Obama?
Objective journalism is DEAD. - priegog, on 05/03/2009, -1/+7I agree, but that's not the point. If people weren't blinded by a) partisalism and b) slogans, speeches and the media, there would have been a chance for another candidate that wasn't either of them. And who could have REALLY changed things.
But that's not the point either. This isn't a comtetition to see who's the lesser evil. The fact is you voted for someone who promised something, and now is breaking promises left and right. And instead of apologising for him, you should be demanding he does his job the way he promised. Because he represents YOU. - V3n0M, on 05/03/2009, -2/+8That's because we've had nothing but Republicans and Democrats as Presidents for our entire lives. It's time for a complete change.
- justjoehere, on 05/03/2009, -3/+9Seriously, you think that was what loopbiz was talking about? Holding people without trials? Go re-read his comments again and pull your head out of your arse.
- 17999, on 05/03/2009, -3/+9In the words of Dogbert in the first ever Dilbert strip:
"Raise your paw if you saw that one coming." - V3n0M, on 05/03/2009, -3/+9@slippeh - What's changed now???
Gitmo - no.
War in Iraq - no.
War in Afghanistan - no.
Out of control government spending - no.
Threatening war with Iran - no.
Change we can believe in - no.
No, I don't think these things would have changed with McCain either, but we had other choices! - gfryesc, on 05/03/2009, -0/+5the great part is that obama's faithful and partisan diggers will not let this interfere with their hero worship of Dear Leader. Even now Digg is rife with anti GOP stories even though the GOP doesn't own one square inch of DC. It's the cult of personality with this crowd. very sad state of affairs.
- flossdaily, on 05/03/2009, -7/+12Because you see no difference between a fair military tribunal and an unfair military tribunal?
- inactive, on 05/03/2009, -1/+6Kinda like Air Force one flying over NY? Just testing the people's reaction.
I agree with you. - Scira, on 05/03/2009, -0/+5The bigger they fall, the harder they are.
- ftc08, on 05/03/2009, -1/+5Unsubstantial unfounded unsourced unsound unfair rumor.
Wake me up when it really happens. Until then make sure you keep your circle jerk of ignorance quiet. - mc88, on 05/03/2009, -0/+4Which proves they are mindless drones, and mindless drones will keep the system broken as long as they vote party line.
- alais, on 05/03/2009, -3/+7Where do you get your news, lemme guess MSNBC?
"greatest President since FDR" oh man, what a riot. - canchin, on 05/03/2009, -5/+9When is the Cult of Personality surrounding Obama going to realize that all he can ever be is just the same *****, different pile.
And this from someone that donated to his campaign even though not an American, had hopes that somehow things really could change, and who foolishly thought - even though knowing better but willing to give him a chance - had hopes that perhaps He could really help America toss off the antiquated garbage that has been keeping America down for so many years.
Same *****, different pile, is the only way now to view Obama.
Kim Il Sung's Cult of Personality has nothing on the Obama Regime. - dreamweaver1984, on 05/03/2009, -2/+6Politician:: blah blah blah
Americans : vote for him.. we like his ideas
Politician: yay elected
Americans: YAY
Politician: I am now going to do the opposite of what i said.. since i just said those things to get elected
Americans: omfg wtf is he doing...
Politician: im doing what every politician you guys elect does. lie to get elected. then do whatever i want! this could only be made possible by the numbers of idiots who actually believe anything that comes out of my mouth! - LenBaird, on 05/03/2009, -2/+6I was a Bush apologist at first. At a certain point, I realized I had been duped, and I hated him even more than I would have because of that. I think this will happen with many Obama apologists and supporters. He is a liar, and a charismatic pitch man for the same old ***** we have been shoveled for decades now.
- schmokedat, on 05/03/2009, -0/+4I agree completely.
- inactive, on 05/03/2009, -10/+14@flossdaily
Thanks for the education. With your help I won't need a dictionary any more.
Mr. Obama has shown with a number of decisions that he is going to continue to allow detainees to be accused without having any charges made against them. He has also made a Bushlike argument that although Guantánamo may be within the jurisdiction of the American justice system, that Bagram Air Base isn't. Etc, etc
Anyone who excoriated Bush for his human rights record and who defends Obama's human rights record after the first 100 days, even without taking this particular case into consideration, is a hypocrite. -
