- cubs0110, on 10/19/2009, -14/+6771 step closer
- massmang, on 10/19/2009, -7/+350It's a start, but marijuana needs to be removed from schedule I, and federal marijuana laws should be completely repealed so states can decide their own laws.
I almost see this as their way to pacify people looking to end prohibition.
It's a policy change, not a law, or bill, which is what is really needed. If Obama loses the election the next administration will be free to change the policy. - duke_nate, on 10/19/2009, -29/+314THIS is what you get a Nobel Peace Prize for......
- monkiboi, on 10/19/2009, -8/+255Nice to see the Feds respecting some States rights.
- NYConcepts, on 10/19/2009, -6/+145Because everything happens overnight in America!
- kurtwinter, on 10/19/2009, -9/+135Good thing this Democrat left leaning liberal is respecting state's rights, as opposed to the small government conservatives who tread on state's rights like a doormat.
- alecks, on 10/19/2009, -6/+129This is a HUGE step closer. This is VERY VERY good news
- ggfobster, on 10/19/2009, -3/+125Legalize, regulate, and tax marijuana.
Think of the children. - CopsSayLegalize, on 10/19/2009, -8/+129This is a great official step in the right direction. Now, how about helping make some more happen? Send a letter to the legislators who represent you at http://www.DrugWarDebate.com
- Vullkan, on 10/19/2009, -3/+108Bob Marley: " the government say herb make you rebel....rebel against what?"
- dn11, on 10/19/2009, -7/+83McDonalds makes gives me fries in 2 minutes, why so slow Obama.
- Diefree, on 10/19/2009, -2/+65You're an idiot. Weed is harmless compared to tobacco and alcohol. And god forbid he use diplomacy instead of starting an illegal war that killed thousands of our soldiers and hundreds of thousands of civilians. You are clueless so just run along before I really demonstrate how idiotic you are.
- inactive, on 10/19/2009, -13/+71So the drug war has ended?!?!!??!?!
/s - roddack, on 10/19/2009, -2/+59Just remove the stupid ***** Controlled Substances Act.
- WiretapStudios, on 10/19/2009, -0/+55...discontinuing the McRib?
- senae, on 10/19/2009, -3/+57Well, weed makes people crazy, is one of the most addictive drugs, leads to heroin abuse, and causes 10 times more lung cancer then cigarettes. Sounds pretty diabolical to me.
These are all "facts" I've been told :( - TheJimid, on 10/19/2009, -21/+69Finally catching up to campaign trail promises.
- TheMeatball, on 10/19/2009, -1/+49Interstate commerce is a ***** reason to regulate marijuana at the federal level and you know it. It's a sham and special interests twisted the law to fit their agenda.
- imnojezus, on 10/19/2009, -1/+48Oregon is removing marijuana from schedule I - the only debate is whether to reclassify it under schedule III or IV. Not to imply that the rest of the country will follow in Oregon's footprints, but if the state's actions are respected at the federal level, it may open a few more avenues for discussion.
I agree though - it needs to be federal law. - acknotSW, on 10/19/2009, -0/+46Probably fat people if I'm reading the signs correctly.
- DangerCollie, on 10/19/2009, -6/+51It's great news and smart policy.
Watch Fox News and Republicans start ranting that Obama is soft on crime. - Solkre, on 10/19/2009, -6/+51Because Federal Law trumps State Law. At the Federal level it's still illegal.
- brickwall99, on 10/19/2009, -3/+46So why were medical marijuana users and suppliers being arrested in the first place?
- pintomp3, on 10/19/2009, -3/+46Individual rights > States rights.
- nofx1510, on 10/19/2009, -11/+53to the edge and I'm about to break!
- dn11, on 10/19/2009, -9/+51you're naivete and blind faith is almost cute.
- LaurelDungeon, on 10/19/2009, -1/+42Come on, Pennsylvania! Daddy's got an anxiety disorder!
- TheMeatball, on 10/19/2009, -3/+43The real test is whether or not Obama will extend this policy to non-medical usage if the CA ballot initiatives go through. That's a whole different ballgame.
- mark322, on 10/19/2009, -1/+41It's high time that somebody did this.
- sHockz, on 10/19/2009, -12/+51holy crap, obama did something i fully agree with??!
- rmxz, on 10/19/2009, -7/+46States Rights FTW.
Seems democrats are closer to libertarians than republicans(also known as neocons) are these days. - mykodacon, on 10/19/2009, -4/+41If everyone person in America was stoned, we would be a peaceful country. So the above point is true.
- Nodaki, on 10/19/2009, -0/+36Are you a dumbass for real or do you just play one on the internet?
Read the 9th and 10th Amendments to the Constitution and tell me what specifically Obama is doing that is legalizing drugs.
I am no Obama fan but you almost could turn me into a supporter if you are the opposition. - happyimbecile, on 10/19/2009, -0/+36Wingnut or troll?
- Greengoo, on 10/19/2009, -0/+31That'll be a short war. They don't have the energy to fight back.
- JustinHopewell, on 10/19/2009, -4/+33Obama will get a cookie from me for this. Or maybe a bag of Funyuns. :)
- Sean42, on 10/19/2009, -1/+27About time.
Prohibition works so well, just look how society's ills were helped with alcohol prohibition. - Hrodrik, on 10/19/2009, -3/+29Small step for Cheech, giant leap for Chong.
- CrackyJSquirrel, on 10/19/2009, -0/+25Yeah it is pretty ridiculous to categorize marijuana with cocaine and heroin. That is one of the major issues with marijuana and the law. The punishment is so harsh mainly because of its classification.
- binnis, on 10/19/2009, -0/+25I agree. This was a chronic situation that needed to be addressed.
- oninbonin, on 10/19/2009, -0/+25YES! Now we're off to start a war on _______________ !
- newes, on 10/19/2009, -4/+29This has alot to do with states rights.
- JigoroKano, on 10/19/2009, -1/+25How would marijuana produced, sold, and consumed all in one state fall under the jurisdiction of the commerce clause?
- RegalBegal, on 10/19/2009, -0/+23You may be a troll and you may not be. In any case all I can do is laugh at people like you.
- ldkronos, on 10/19/2009, -2/+25Yeah, everything only takes a few seconds to do when you aren't the one doing it, because you always forget (or don't know) about exactly what needs to take place. I'm pretty sure doing this wasn't as simple as placing a call. There's probably all sorts of stuff involved....things like looking over existing laws and rewriting policies (making sure they are clear and take everything into account without leaving ambiguities and loopholes). Not to mention, the president can't just sign a paper and forget it. Stuff like this doesn't happen without continuing to take the presidents time...everything from having to deliver speeches announcing it, to answering media questions, to dealing with the flaming bags of ***** opponents are bound to throw back at him over this topic.
- tek69, on 10/19/2009, -2/+24Because technically they were breaking federal law. fed trumps state. Sad but true.
- BullBearMS, on 10/19/2009, -0/+22Brain: Are you pondering what I'm pondering?
Pinky: Whoof, oh, I'd have to say the odds of that are terribly slim, Brain.
Brain: True.
Pinky: I mean, really, when have I ever been pondering what you've been pondering?
Brain: To my knowledge, never.
Pinky: Exactly. So, what are the chances that this time, I'm pondering what you're pondering?
Brain: Next to nil.
Pinky: Well, that's exactly what I'm thinking, too.
Brain: Therefore, you are pondering what I'm pondering.
Pinky: Poit, I guess I am! - the8thbit, on 10/19/2009, -0/+21Did he ever promise to do anything regaurding marijuana reform? He might have, but I don't recall. I do remember him bluntly turning it down when a question regaurding prohibition topped his online poll.
However, I'm glad to see Obama fighting drug restrictions, whether it was promised or not. - dn11, on 10/19/2009, -7/+28so? I voted for him - i didn't expect miracles. I didn't expect him to roll into washington like a dictator and snap his fingers. apparently you expected that much from Ron Paul.
- Mujokan, on 10/19/2009, -1/+22Meh, ***** you.
