Obama Draws Record Crowd Of 75,000 In Portland
huffingtonpost.com — Sen. Barack Obama has seen his share of large crowds over the last 15 months, but his campaign said they have not approached the numbers gathered along the waterfront here right now.

- joaob, on 05/19/2008, -10/+128Hopefully they all voted and mailed in their ballots on time. Oregon can send a clear message that they will not be distracted by the politics of fear and division.
- kevinwiz, on 05/19/2008, -16/+4Senator Obama, is that you?
I wish such a crowd would assemble for him in LA- chaosium, on 05/19/2008, -4/+2"I wish such a crowd would assemble for him in LA"
What does that even mean?- MadOtaku, on 05/19/2008, -1/+2It means that kevinwiz wants Obama to draw a crowd in LA that is comparable to the one in Portland.
- chaosium, on 05/19/2008, -2/+2"It means that kevinwiz wants Obama to draw a crowd in LA that is comparable to the one in Portland."
I was looking for context, thanks.

I'm an Obama supporter, but when people repeat these sound bites it's absolutely ridiculous. I mean who speaks like that?- VinceNoir, on 05/19/2008, -3/+6Talking heads. Big wig politicos. Pundits. Take your pick These people have no lives and no sense of what it is to be a normal human being. Sadly, if someone took a more folksy approach, it would probably appeal to some, but would wind up alienating other large segments of the voters. That's what turned me off to G.W.B. Or at least one of the things... his "down home" attempts just rubbed me the wrong way. I don't like "down home" people either. The ideal president should be an efficient clerk.
- cdigioia, on 05/19/2008, -2/+1Thanks, I didn't mean more folksy, but more specific and less emotionally biased. "politics of fear and division" is more like business speak - it sounds good at a glance, but doesn't really mean anything.
- chaosium, on 05/19/2008, -0/+3"it sounds good at a glance, but doesn't really mean anything. "
Have you been paying attention to ANYTHING the GOP does for the last dozen years, if not decades? - chaosium, on 05/19/2008, -0/+4It wasn't just his "down home" style, it was obviously the pandering "i think you're idiots and you love me for it" veneer.
- allengeer, on 05/19/2008, -0/+10who speaks like that? I'm not sure what you are asking? Who speaks by making clear and articulated statements? Lots of people do.
- cdigioia, on 05/19/2008, -1/+1Well, ironically, "clear" and "articulated" mean basically the same thing. Anyway I disagree, "Politics of fear and division" is a vague generalization. What's more, it has a strong emotional bent.
- allengeer, on 05/19/2008, -0/+3first,
irony-The use of words to express something different from and often opposite to their literal meaning.
None of the words that you used in that statement were used to express something different from its literal meaning.
secondly,
clear-Plain or evident to the mind; unmistakable.
articulate-Expressing oneself easily in clear and effective language
They are not the same. If I had said, Who speaks by making clear statements? I would have not been saying "Who speaks by making clear, effective, self-expressive statements"
Alternatively, if I would have said "Who speaks by making articulate statements" I would not have been saying "Who speaks by making plainly evident to the mind articulate statements."
No the words do not mean "basically" the same thing and express a distinct description of his words. Clearly describes his argument, articulate describes the speech he used to describe his argument. Basic English.
http://www.google.com/search?client=safari&rls=en- ...
Google has 96,000 instances of the phrase "clear and articulate" for what its worth.
As for your argument that "politics of fear and division" is a vague generalization, just because you don't have examples doesn't mean you can't figure out what he is talking about. But here is a list of examples for what Obama talks about with fear and divisive politics.
* Using peoples fear of terrorist attacks to get elected. "I'm the tough candidate against terrorism. You need to vote for me because if you don't we won't be as secure against terrorists"
* Using peoples fear of terrorist attacks to give up their liberties. (see Patriot Act)
* Taking a stance on an issue like negotiations with foreign entities and calling those that don't agree with you similar to Nazi appeasers, thereby dividing your people into people that are Nazi appeasers and not Nazi appeasers. (divisive)
* Calling a group of people elitist, latte-sipping out-of-touch liberals, thereby dividing people into two categories (divisive).

I didn't go however. Paul is getting my vote, you know someone who knows a little about financial responsibility.- theaceoffire, on 05/19/2008, -0/+3"75,000 people can't fit into waterfront park"
Step into my clown car and lets talk about this. - croxis, on 05/19/2008, -0/+4Yes, they can. I was there in 2004 when 50,000 were in there to see Kerry.
Also, had you read the article, you would have seen that 60,000 were in the park and the additional 15,000 were outside the gates. - ichbeineinrcg, on 05/20/2008, -0/+1The Blues Festival always draws big crowds, too. Waterfront could support 60,000 pretty easily, I think.
It's the parking that would be nightmarish.

- vidaliasweet, on 05/19/2008, -1/+1I wonder how much heat or food Obama will allow you in your new glory days? Well here's a hint from his rally in Oregon:
"We can't drive our SUVs and eat as much as we want and keep our homes on 72 degrees at all times ... and then just expect that other countries are going to say OK," Obama said.
"That's not leadership. That's not going to happen," he added.

- Knucklecallus, on 05/19/2008, -0/+1I live in Portland... I went on a hike today. 3,500 feet elevation gain in 4 miles (plus 90 degree weather) over an Obama speech? What was I thinking!
- dn11, on 05/19/2008, -0/+3Portland is a cool city, but they also call Portland "the whitest major city in America". Doesn't seem to be much of a problem for Obama.
- poxonyou, on 05/19/2008, -0/+3Apparently they're not WORKING WHITES. You know, REAL Americans who vote for candidates, like Clinton or McCain, because they think Obama sounds too much like Osama and, well, if he gets in power, he'll fire all white bosses in America and replace them with black men on death row.
- OralCavity, on 05/19/2008, -0/+4they must not be hardworking
- InvsibleChimp, on 05/19/2008, -7/+79I was there. I got in line around 11am and got into the park around 2:30pm, just as Obama was taking the stage. Obama welcomed and thanked the crowd of 30,000 people who showed up. Everybody there knew there were more than that. I had no idea there was over double that.
- 3th0s, on 05/19/2008, -0/+8I remember an old lady telling us that there was between 30,000 and 40,000 people who showed up on my way in.
- inverselogic, on 05/19/2008, -0/+5I was there also, freakin hot as hell, but it was nice to actually see the guy I am voting for ;)
- PandaHat, on 05/19/2008, -1/+7I got downtown around 1pm... the Obama volunteers steered us latecomers to the back of the line: all the way from Waterfront park up to PSU; the line seemed to stretch at least a mile. I opted not to stick around (I got to see him last month at the coliseum) but was very pleased to see so many folks out-- everybody seemed to be in a great mood. I have yet to see one Clinton yard sign in this town, though there are probably some out in the trailer parks

- SowingSeeds, on 05/19/2008, -8/+19I hope Oregon follows the positive lead of North Carolina and sends another wrong message to the clinton camp that Obama is the peoples's choice.
- poxonyou, on 05/19/2008, -0/+5Obviously, she'll get the message that she must not drop out. She's going to stay in until she can get a crowd of 80,000. In other words, she's never dropping out. 2020 and she'll still be running against Obama.
- maymok, on 05/19/2008, -11/+44This shows true leadership. Obama is like a firefighter who shows up promptly to rescue us from a burning house. Our country is in a bad shape. God bless him and all of them!!
A happy Joan- 3th0s, on 05/19/2008, -1/+18I dunno why race has anything to do with it. Ever since the segregated town of Vanport flooded in 1948 and the blacks moved into northern portland, this city has been anything but whitewash. My highschool was barely 50% white. People here don't really care about race, religion, creed, or sexual preference (which Obama directly mentioned in his speech), all we care about is moving this country forward in a positive way. Thus, Portland unanimously selected Obama as our best choice this afternoon.
- vertigoacid, on 05/19/2008, -0/+7While I'm a Portland native, through and through, I'd have to respectfully disagree that Portland is anything but a white city. Demographics show that we're the whitest big city in America, beating out Seattle at 68% with a whopping 75% of the population here. We like to think that we're a progressive, multicultural hub of the Northwest, but the truth is, some of that is facade and wishful thinking. Tolerance is one thing, and I think we really do have that, but it's really ignorant to believe that racism isn't an issue here. Just because you don't see it manifested in the same way as in outwardly racist areas doesn't mean that everything is okay. Our lack of diversity and separation of cultures into different suburbs can lead to strong yet unintentional biases.
- rpieszak, on 05/19/2008, -0/+1We're really 75% white?? I wouldn't have guessed it.

The old guard will not step aside quietly. I have no doubt this will get ugly. But the manipulations that worked for so long will hopefully seem as trite and pathetic as they truly are. All Iraqi households were required to have a "gun". It sure helped keep them safe from invaders didn't it? Gun ownership provides a sense of security in fearful people. What worries you about the government that you think possessing a gun can remedy?
I own several and have no problems with other responsible people owning firearms, but I don't ever think of them as being my tool to defend the "American way". I use education and the ballot box for that. - masterm1nd, on 05/19/2008, -1/+1answer the question

- Izult, on 05/19/2008, -2/+1Really? Explain then why your real deal voted for the Violent Radicalization and Homegrown Terrorist Act and Patriot Act just to name a few. Or do Civil liberties really mean nothing to you? He as much a special interest whore as the other two.
- PolishLogic, on 05/20/2008, -1/+1Explain to me how a bill that calls for a commission to conduct research on why people take to violent radicalization violates civil liberties. Answer: it doesn't.
As for violent radicalization and homegrown terror itself, did the Oklahoma City bombing make you say "wow, those people are merely exercising their freedom of speech in a big way"?
"Taking away your civil liberties" is the biggest catchphrase cop-out I can think of. What civil liberties have you personally lost lately? - Izult, on 05/21/2008, -0/+1Read the bill again and use that polished logic you claim to have. It gets scarier when you remember that the Military Commissions Act of 2006' which suspended habeas corpus allowing the president to declare you an 'enemy combatant' and ends your rights to seek legal or judicial relief from unlawful imprisonment was signed. Also the John Warner National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) of 2007' which essentially eliminated the protections of the Posse Comitatus Act and re-wrote the Insurrection Act.
If you read through HR 1955 you'll see that the definitions are horribly vague leaving it wide open to interpretation as to what constitutes terrorist activity or promoting violent radicalization.
FYI I was in earshot of the blast (you could hear it as far away as Stillwater) when that ***** happened & saw the aftermath live not just on TV. While it was a ***** thing to happen, people are going to do what they're going to do to prove a point regardless of what the government knows. 9/11 proved that and don't tell me you buy that there was NO warning because there was. Rice flat out lied. What i want is for the rules we have in place to be followed, and that includes right to a speedy trial by jury. If we allowed it for McVeigh, whom most people can agree was the scum of the earth, we sure as hell can allow it for the others including the "enemy combatants" many of whom have yet to be formally charged. We have laws for a reason and no one not even the government is above them.

- SheilaNoya, on 05/19/2008, -1/+28You seem to be confused.
"Osama" is the guy the Republicans gave cash and weapons to when the claimed he was a "freedom fighter" for attacking the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan. As usual, it turns out they were completely wrong and he ended up being America's biggest enemy.
"Obama" is your next president, who will try to undo some of the massive damage the Republicans have done to America.

- ssn697, on 05/19/2008, -3/+53I keep hearing the Republicans say "keep Obama and Clinton going at each other" like it is good for the Republicans. In the meantime, the Democratic party is setting records for new registered voters, and voter turnout.
There is a long time until the election, but if I were the Republican party heads, I'd be preparing for an ass whooping.- SheilaNoya, on 05/19/2008, -0/+22I agree with you 100%
I'm 57 years old and I've never seen the public so energized and enthusiastic to vote. A recent poll also showed that 82% of Democrats are happy with their candidates, while only 24% of Republicans like their candidates (76% of Republicans are unhappy with their choices this year).
It's a damn good year to be a Democrat and/or an Independent. We're ready to change the direction of this country and the Republicans don't have enough strength or support to stop us.- ssn697, on 05/19/2008, -0/+16The other encouraging sign, IMO, is how dirty politics is backfiring. There are too many people with access to the Internet now. When one sentence is used to try to vilify a candidate, too many people can research and find out what was REALLY said now.
Plus, America has heard it all from Bush. People just aren't buying into the old tactics. It really has completely changed, hasn't it? I am 45, and I notice a completely different tenor to this election than any in my lifetime. I am glad to see it.

- technokitty, on 05/19/2008, -0/+1Maybe you should hook into reality and check this site out. You will see he is poised for a landslide against Mc Cain. Remeber, McCain is just starting to talk, and it appears the more he says the more he is losing Independents. This site is a great overall convention site and it has ever permeation Clinton has ever come up with, showing the math, and that none of them work, even with Michigan and Florida counting as is......it also shows all scenarios for Mccain. Not a very rosy picture for the Republicans.
As for the California thing, I am in California, worked on the campaign and not much was made of a historical fact that occurred here on Feb 5th...Obama only lost the state by 9% point! No candidate has ever gotten more than 20% of the vote except the frontrunner. Clinton only won by 9% point and he didn't campaign much here either. I never saw him speak even. And currently Obama leads Republicans and Clinton here by doubble digits...so I do not buy that California will not go Obama in the Fall. Of course it will, and in a huge way. Current polling shows 17-23% over McCain depending on the poll.
Some perspective; when I first started working on the campaign in April 2006, no one here knew who he was. The conventional wisdom at the time and even up through Feb was that no one has ever gotten more than 25% of the vote and that would be incredible with a grassroots campaign in such a diverse and large state...well Obama got 45% of the vote. We worked hard for ever vote. Never has ever happened before, but no one covered that in the media now did they!!??

- MadOtaku, on 05/19/2008, -0/+5I'm an Oregonian and have noticed a strong superiority complex here (I have it too) and it's usually coupled with a desire to keep outsiders away. I differ from many of my fellow Oregonians on that point; while I don't want a rapid influx of outsiders to destroy the wonderful and unique culture of the Pacific Northwest (I love you too, Washington), I would love to share it with others and get some new blood here as well.
We're an interesting and unusual bunch, with a very laid back and friendly culture, and I think that the sort of people who would want to live among us, are the sort that would fit right in. - woofers07, on 05/19/2008, -2/+4*edit:

- Sioen, on 05/19/2008, -0/+1Actually Mad, what we are currently getting is a rapid influx of outsiders mostly destroying our wonderful culture.
Portland proper is holding its own, mostly because so many folks can't afford to buy a house in town, but the surrounding areas are bursting with new growth and are finding they can't sustain all the new schools, emergency services, water use, roads, etc.
It's not a desire to keep outsiders away, it's a desire not to live in a California-like strip mall of overblown development.
More housing, more people and more buildings means less farms, parks, forests and beauty. There isn't any "spare space" to build in, so something loses out.
- jinnie, on 05/19/2008, -0/+8i am incredibly grateful to be living in portland, but every time someone draws a penis or writes "***** you" in the dust on my car (sometimes the freezing fog, which is kinda cool) because i have california plates, there's a little pang in my heart because of that kind of fratboy hate.
california is a great state. californians are very friendly and laid back, much like oregonians and washingtonians. isn't it enough that we, together, comprise three of the best states this side of the mississippi? we could secede and make one helluva country. british columbia, too!
sorry, jsut riffing.- mrASSMAN, on 05/19/2008, -0/+5Yeah, I think we could do without all the states in the middle.. and in the southeast. and west virginia.
- MadOtaku, on 05/19/2008, -0/+7I've always thought that if British Columbia, Washington, Oregon, and California all seceded, we'd probably have one of the most livable countries on Earth. A huge range of weather, several large cities, low population density (leaving room to expand), a wide range of industries (including agriculture, manufacturing, tech, and others), and some of the best political policies around (euthanasia, health care, and many more good things).
For those who wonder, it would have a population of 50,761,345 spread over 1,278,239 square miles. Now all we need is a name.- pandorazboxx, on 05/19/2008, -0/+2West America?

Not because he keeps using a phrase in his speeches.
- SheilaNoya, on 05/19/2008, -4/+25This is fantastic! The only unfortunate thing is that Oregon has a closed primary. Independents won't be able to vote in the primary and there are tons of them in Oregon. Obama will definitely win the Oregon Democratic primary, but he would win even bigger if Independents could vote right now.
No problem though - They'll still be able to cast their vote in the General Election this November and help Obama become the next President of the United States of America.
Thanks to all of you fine people of Oregon!- Gemfinder, on 05/19/2008, -0/+8Sheila:
We had a HUGE statewide voter registration and re-registration drive last month. Hundreds of volunteers mobilized across the state and I can personally account for five re-registers, from Independent, Green and Republican parties. So the only Independents that aren't voting for him are ones who refused to re-register.
Closed primary...yes, it is what it is. And frankly, I'm not sure if an open primary would be a good idea anyway, given what happened in Ohio. And there is absolutely nothing from keeping Independent Obamans from volunteering and contributing to the campaign. And they do. If they don't re-register, that's okay, they can help elect him anyway.
The truth will be revealed in 48 hours! :)- SheilaNoya, on 05/19/2008, -0/+8Gemfinder - Thanks. I know a few of those Independent voters in Oregon who didn't want to re-register, or who put it off until it was too late. However, like you said, they are still out rooting for Obama and doing what they can to help his campaign (including one "sane Christian" friend who is busy going onto rightwing Christian blogs and politely debunking the myths and lies being passed around about Obama and providing them with verifiable facts to replace their rumors).
I live in Los Angeles, but I'll be travelling around in Northern, Central, and Coastal Oregon for 2 weeks in June to enjoy some of your local scenery. I always love it there. It's truly one of the most beautiful states in America and you must be proud to live there.

- RAEP, on 05/19/2008, -0/+5If it weren't for the closed primary though, we'd have republicans voting for Hillary and whatnot. There are negatives to each type of vote (as we've already witnessed). The modified closed primary as offered by California seems to be working better than either of the alternatives though, hopefully it will catch on.
- docCdav, on 05/19/2008, -0/+2I have to admit I'm a little embarrassed to be registered an independent in Oregon. My vote would have been one more for Obama, and damn if I'd liked to contribute.
- Gemfinder, on 05/20/2008, -0/+1You can help with the campaign. Find your local Obama office, walk in and say, "How can I help?" And anyone can donate, even if it's a couple dollars.
If everyone who went to that rally in Portland yesterday threw $1 at the campaign, the expenses for all the Oregon state Obama For America offices would be paid for the month.

- Gemfinder, on 05/19/2008, -5/+3275,000 people = 1 in 20 Oregonians...and Portland is close enough to Seattle for a few of them to come down, too.
Oh, and 75,000 people = half the Oregonian voting populace. Good job, folks.
The rest of us were having your back, getting out the vote, feeding the staff at our various HQ offices around the state, and celebrating from the sidelines. Even if we weren't there with you in body, we were there in spirit. Thanks for giving our candidate the BIGGEST crowd he's had yet! We doubled up Philadelphia's, with interest!
Can there be any doubt that Oregon is Obama Country?
P.S., I'll never complain about the haters here on Digg again. The piss 'n ***** being flung by half of the comments on the WaPo article makes them look like kittens lazing in the balmy spring sun.- MadOtaku, on 05/19/2008, -0/+375,000/3,421,399* = 0.02192 = 2.192% = 1 in 50. A huge chunk still, but not 1 in 20.

- moolaismyfriend, on 05/19/2008, -5/+15Sucks to be living your world view.
- acroyear2, on 05/19/2008, -2/+13No.
75,000+ people are going to work their ass off to get things back on track. You're clearly missing the entire point of this. Civic duty is being reborn.- ramsrule94, on 05/19/2008, -6/+1You can take your civic duty and your high taxes that go along with it and shove them up your ass. I wish all the liberals, lesbians, gays would move to california and live out there fantasy lives away from the rest of us that live in the real world. You know the one where the majority of us pay for our own healthcare and our own daycare and our own everything else that we don't want to have to pay for everyone in this country.
- acroyear2, on 05/19/2008, -0/+3That's fine with us. We'll send you to Iraq since your party seems to love it so much there.
- ramsrule94, on 05/20/2008, -0/+1I haven't been there myself but I have plenty of friends that have. And unlike most of the leftwing media the friends that I know have said that things are starting to work in Iraq. But I know all you socialist leftwing granola eating wackjobs would rather listen to the opinion of the media then the opinion of troops in the field.

- ADigbySellers, on 05/19/2008, -13/+2Easy now. He has "CHANGE", "TOGETHER", "YES WE CAN" and several other catchy phrases. You have to have these clever words if you are going to fix the world by talking.
Next up: "I believe that TOGETHER we can CHANGE things if we are allowed to HOPE. YES WE CAN!" etc. etc. etc. yawn...etc. etc. - Qtip42, on 05/19/2008, -9/+3You'd be surprised how many blue collar workers there are in this world. They want to be cradled by the government from the time their born till the time they're deceased. It's sad but that's what the large majority wants and that's why America is the butt of all jokes.
- SoulDrift404, on 05/19/2008, -1/+5Yeah, it's much better to go with the candidate who has no hope. McSame '08!
