- scoobydoo84, on 05/19/2008, -17/+160I don't like republicons or democrats, however, I think Obama has the capacity, will, desire, intelligence, and sheer tenacity to return this nation to its glory days.
- joaob, on 05/19/2008, -10/+127Hopefully they all voted and mailed in their ballots on time. Oregon can send a clear message that they will not be distracted by the politics of fear and division.
- mediablitz, on 05/19/2008, -9/+88Wait, but I have a conservative in another thread telling me whites won't vote for Obama!
- 0Zeitgeist0, on 05/19/2008, -12/+84Obama, America's next great President.
- InvsibleChimp, on 05/19/2008, -7/+78I was there. I got in line around 11am and got into the park around 2:30pm, just as Obama was taking the stage. Obama welcomed and thanked the crowd of 30,000 people who showed up. Everybody there knew there were more than that. I had no idea there was over double that.
- caroyapp1, on 05/19/2008, -10/+64Wow! Now that is a crowd! I remember attending a World Youth Day that had a rally that big with Pope John Paul.
WIsh I was there with those people because where ever Obama goes, people who go and see him have such peace in them. I love them all.
Way to go Oregon! You lead the way because there are so many people who are lost. - BostonSteve, on 05/19/2008, -9/+61This is BIG. This is nothing this country has seen in a very long time. It feels like it is time for a new generation to take the lead. It is time for a all generations to return to the ideals and protections our founding fathers so brilliantly crafted in our constitution.
The old guard will not step aside quietly. I have no doubt this will get ugly. But the manipulations that worked for so long will hopefully seem as trite and pathetic as they truly are. It is time for leadership. It is time for integrity. It is time to set our great country back on the path of greatness. - inactive, on 05/19/2008, -3/+52I keep hearing the Republicans say "keep Obama and Clinton going at each other" like it is good for the Republicans. In the meantime, the Democratic party is setting records for new registered voters, and voter turnout.
There is a long time until the election, but if I were the Republican party heads, I'd be preparing for an ass whooping. - malvado, on 05/19/2008, -0/+44But Portland is PRIME Obama demographic...
Young, liberal, and educated. - rebpeace, on 05/19/2008, -9/+52All we are saying is give peace a chance!
- green1152, on 05/19/2008, -3/+39haha!! Wow. I live in Salem, Or. About a 45 minute drive from Portland. We had Bill Clinton come today for Hillary. The turnout was about... 300 or less. The chant the lady was doing trying to get the audience excited died out very quickly. "Hillary.. Hillary.....hillary.."
"Okay, great. Have a nice day." and she walked off the stage in frustration. HA! - woofers07, on 05/19/2008, -5/+40Whenever Oregon makes it on Digg for something it always seems to be on the positive side, thanks for making me a proud Oregonian, I love it here, but sorry, that's not an invitation for everyone else
- cypriss9, on 05/19/2008, -1/+34You are unbelievably retarded.
- maymok, on 05/19/2008, -11/+43This shows true leadership. Obama is like a firefighter who shows up promptly to rescue us from a burning house. Our country is in a bad shape. He is the only one who is honest and has shown real leadership. He is principled and not afraid to tell the truth about our situation.
- cakemix76, on 05/19/2008, -2/+3175,000 and not one hard working white American among them. I kid, I kid.
- Gemfinder, on 05/19/2008, -5/+3275,000 people = 1 in 20 Oregonians...and Portland is close enough to Seattle for a few of them to come down, too.
Oh, and 75,000 people = half the Oregonian voting populace. Good job, folks.
The rest of us were having your back, getting out the vote, feeding the staff at our various HQ offices around the state, and celebrating from the sidelines. Even if we weren't there with you in body, we were there in spirit. Thanks for giving our candidate the BIGGEST crowd he's had yet! We doubled up Philadelphia's, with interest!
Can there be any doubt that Oregon is Obama Country?
P.S., I'll never complain about the haters here on Digg again. The piss 'n ***** being flung by half of the comments on the WaPo article makes them look like kittens lazing in the balmy spring sun. - thentro, on 05/19/2008, -7/+34For comparison, Super Bowl XLII was hosted at University of Phoenix Stadium which can seat a maximum of 73,719 people.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/University_of_Phoenix ... - SheilaNoya, on 05/19/2008, -1/+27You seem to be confused.
"Osama" is the guy the Republicans gave cash and weapons to when the claimed he was a "freedom fighter" for attacking the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan. As usual, it turns out they were completely wrong and he ended up being America's biggest enemy.
"Obama" is your next president, who will try to undo some of the massive damage the Republicans have done to America.
There - I hope that cleared things up for your tiny little mind. - tobias19, on 05/19/2008, -3/+29Obama + The Decemberists + 74,999 other Portlanders made for one hell of an afternoon.
- SheilaNoya, on 05/19/2008, -0/+22I agree with you 100%
I'm 57 years old and I've never seen the public so energized and enthusiastic to vote. A recent poll also showed that 82% of Democrats are happy with their candidates, while only 24% of Republicans like their candidates (76% of Republicans are unhappy with their choices this year).
It's a damn good year to be a Democrat and/or an Independent. We're ready to change the direction of this country and the Republicans don't have enough strength or support to stop us. - HamSandwich, on 05/19/2008, -4/+26That is incredible! The fact that ANY candidate can draw a crowd that big is heartwarming. It's awesome to see that many people actively involved in the political process.
- SheilaNoya, on 05/19/2008, -4/+25This is fantastic! The only unfortunate thing is that Oregon has a closed primary. Independents won't be able to vote in the primary and there are tons of them in Oregon. Obama will definitely win the Oregon Democratic primary, but he would win even bigger if Independents could vote right now.
No problem though - They'll still be able to cast their vote in the General Election this November and help Obama become the next President of the United States of America.
Thanks to all of you fine people of Oregon! - 3th0s, on 05/19/2008, -5/+26I was at this rally, It was pretty amazing to see that many crammed into a an area that was only supposed to have 30,000, tops. His speech was kind of the generic rhetoric we've all heard time and time again, but the mutual enthusiasm between him and the crowd was special.
- inactive, on 05/19/2008, -4/+25You
- StarlessKnight, on 05/19/2008, -2/+21Hate to burst your bubble, but the President of the United States does not make law. The President is part of this branch called the "Executive," and what they do in that branch is enforce the law. Another branch, which we like to call the "Legislative," is the one that makes law.
/And I'm being generous to even humor your poor argument that Obama would put forward sharia law. - lisaawesome, on 05/19/2008, -7/+26Oh Oregon you always make me proud to be a beaver. I swear I'm going to be back one day!
- 3th0s, on 05/19/2008, -1/+18I dunno why race has anything to do with it. Ever since the segregated town of Vanport flooded in 1948 and the blacks moved into northern portland, this city has been anything but whitewash. My highschool was barely 50% white. People here don't really care about race, religion, creed, or sexual preference (which Obama directly mentioned in his speech), all we care about is moving this country forward in a positive way. Thus, Portland unanimously selected Obama as our best choice this afternoon.
- acroyear2, on 05/19/2008, -0/+17Way too generous.
- taylorr05, on 05/19/2008, -3/+20PDX FTW! I'm in there somewhere!
- javip, on 05/19/2008, -0/+17that's being offensive to retards
- scheibs14, on 05/19/2008, -8/+24Amazing to see how this man can bring so many people together. I went to my first political event ever when he stopped by in MN before Super Tuesday
- inactive, on 05/19/2008, -0/+16The other encouraging sign, IMO, is how dirty politics is backfiring. There are too many people with access to the Internet now. When one sentence is used to try to vilify a candidate, too many people can research and find out what was REALLY said now.
Plus, America has heard it all from Bush. People just aren't buying into the old tactics. It really has completely changed, hasn't it? I am 45, and I notice a completely different tenor to this election than any in my lifetime. I am glad to see it. - nblsavage, on 05/19/2008, -1/+16Coming from the person who just called 75,000 people "sheeple" without knowing a thing about them, I don't think you have much room to criticize my logic.
- inactive, on 05/19/2008, -4/+19You mean a Clinton supporter.
- nblsavage, on 05/19/2008, -4/+18I'm from Portland and we know ***** when we see it. Obama is the real deal. You and your kind masterm1nd are obsolete.
- JoanDark, on 05/19/2008, -11/+25WOWWWWW!!!
Thanks, Angie, for this!!
I'm verey happy!!
The people of Portland , white though they are, have no problem with our candidate!!
Well--anyone would go out to see our historical President-to-be!
God bless him and all of them!!
A happy Joan - acroyear2, on 05/19/2008, -1/+15Um, so you're saying Obama wins this "sheeple" thing because he's following the crowd? Which crowd? American people? Ah nevermind. You're making it too easy for me.
- Moosejoose, on 05/19/2008, -3/+17I love obama, but since I work in a cafe on the waterfront this rally totally ruined my day.
- Borgcube636, on 05/19/2008, -0/+13Ahh, I'm proud to be from Oregon (portland area, actually :) )
- AAK15, on 05/19/2008, -10/+23Barack The Vote!
- The_Wallbanger, on 05/19/2008, -4/+17Even bigger slide show..
http://www.flickr.com/search/?q=obama+portland&d=t ... - rusty123jimi, on 05/19/2008, -2/+15Another proud Oregonian speaks with you too man!!! Today was really inspiring! =)
- nblsavage, on 05/19/2008, -1/+14I'm not new and I know you're as empty-headed as they come.
- allengeer, on 05/19/2008, -4/+17perhaps these people are not thinking like that... maybe they are thinking that all American, rich or poor, black or white, are American nonetheless and deserve the help of their fellow Americans.
- lhbaker, on 05/19/2008, -1/+13It's scary to even consider him not getting elected.
- inactive, on 05/19/2008, -5/+17I really can't see Obama NOT becoming the next president of the US, unless something ground breaking happens.
- Atratyys, on 05/19/2008, -3/+15I was there today, it was fun, never seen the waterfront that jammed packed with people.
- lhbaker, on 05/19/2008, -2/+14Where's Waldo?
- acroyear2, on 05/19/2008, -1/+13Oh my god! You're right! He'll never win California!
- acroyear2, on 05/19/2008, -2/+13No.
75,000+ people are going to work their ass off to get things back on track. You're clearly missing the entire point of this. Civic duty is being reborn. -
