- DenaL, on 07/24/2008, -15/+49This is beyond outrageous!
- MorganMghee, on 07/24/2008, -7/+25Seems like a massive misinterpretation of the 'no using government funds, facilities or personnel for political purposes' rule, and is quite transparent at that.
- miamidolfan13, on 07/24/2008, -17/+33This is not surprising. Can't wait until this regime is over.
- fstfrk13, on 07/24/2008, -1/+16it was actually 200,000 people. They surrounded the park for blocks.
- LastAXEL, on 07/25/2008, -1/+13your an idiot. we have some of the largest amounts of Americans outside the U.S. in Germany....
I used to be one. - humperdinck, on 07/25/2008, -1/+13So either Obama has no substance because he doesn't talk about his policies or he's arrogant and presumptuous because he has the gall to talk about his policies.
- ulmedas, on 07/25/2008, -0/+12This has nothing to do with days off. They are prohibited from attending, whether they are off work or not.
- greenwald, on 07/24/2008, -6/+15Maybe if Obama was a U.S. Senator or something it would be different...oh wait.
- redcolumbine, on 07/24/2008, -9/+18"Lise, can I borrow your ID card? I left mine in my desk and I want to go grab some beers..."
- normlsparky, on 07/25/2008, -2/+11i wonder if voting is a "partisan political activity"? probably depends upon who you vote for.
- phrenzy, on 07/25/2008, -0/+9LOL @ all the Reichpublicans freaking out because some people are actually HAPPY with their candidate while theirs is as appealing as day old oatmeal.
Funny how they were all OK with a cult of personality while they were choking on Bushs *****.
Shoe's on the other foot now *****. Deal with it. - sgtbutterscotch, on 07/25/2008, -3/+12I agree. This is the ***** headline that has ever gone popular...or maybe it's genius, like a cliffhanger; everyone will read the story in order to figure out what is going on.
- rearlgrant, on 07/25/2008, -11/+19Sorry -- I'm a supporter of Obama, that on certain weeks considers voting for Barr (I believe in treating my fellow humans humanely, but w/limited government, and I've never in my life believed that the Republican party is sincere about caring for those less fortunate). I think public officials remaining out of politics is a good thing. This is a non issue, and it's better for the Republic if it stays that way. Want to be political, get out of public service!
- inactive, on 07/24/2008, -4/+12"Government employees serving in the United States are permitted to attend such events under the Hatch Act, which bars other partisan activity, such as contributing money or working in behalf of a candidate"
Why no outrage about the campaign work or donations? Seems to me that you should be just as pissed off about this. Then again, that would take too much effort to get upset about. - ryan69969, on 07/25/2008, -0/+8Actually, there is no one governmental model that encompasses all of Europe. The constitutional democracies of the Eurpoean nations are all relatively unique, and free markets do thrive in Europe also. Let's also not forget that their currency is doing fairly well compared to the US dollar. I don't think that a difference in outlook vis-a-vis a hawkish foreign policy necessarily denotes a socialist agenda.
- TrueBlueJP90, on 07/25/2008, -8/+15The purpose of the trip is to prove to the nay-sayers that he can handle foreign affairs as Commander-in-Chief.
Unfortunately the nay-sayers fail to grasp its meaning and resort to failed attempts at sarcasm. - retzed, on 07/25/2008, -2/+9As an Australian I must plead you to see past his imperfections and do your bit to make sure that McCain doesn't get his opportunity to mess with the rest the world. Obama will steer the world in a better direction.
- swrostmore, on 07/24/2008, -2/+9Once more your claims are easily proven to be factually false, yomamma. The US standard of living is far below Europe's, even in European Leftist countries.
Economist Worldwide quality-of-life index, 2005
#1 Ireland (Centrist)
#2 Switzerland (Democratic Socialist)
#3 Norway (Democratic Socialist)
...#13 USA
UN Human Development Index (2008):
#1 Iceland (Rightist)
#2 Norway (Democratic Socialist)
#3. Australia (Center-Left)
...#12 USA - rearlgrant, on 07/25/2008, -0/+6Good.
- enantiodromia, on 07/25/2008, -0/+6i'd choose that over what W has given us.
honestly, who is better off than they were 8 years ago?
anyone? - minox, on 07/25/2008, -0/+6I think the costs were split 50/50 between his campaign and the German government, if I am remembering correctly. This pissed off a good number of Germans as their portion of the bill was something like 700k Euro.
- JumpingJack79, on 07/25/2008, -0/+5Going to hear a speech at 7 PM (local time) doesn't exactly count as a day off.
- radiofrequency, on 07/25/2008, -11/+16Campaigns for Germans, scraps visit to see wounded American vets.
http://www.breitbart.com/article.php?id=D924E4KO0& ... - chase001, on 07/25/2008, -1/+6It was exhilarating to hear someone Presidential speak after our long national nightmare called monkey boy.
- tomarocco, on 07/25/2008, -6/+11Perhaps the ***** who sent those soldiers to get wounded should be taking on that role. Arrogant prick is gonna give it to you long and hard, 'con-boy.
- airwalke, on 07/25/2008, -0/+5I wonder what the Europeans think of our media that try so hard to use Europe as a smear.
- patpl22391, on 07/25/2008, -3/+8It was a political speech, dumbass. Hatch Act, ever hear of it?
- geoken, on 07/24/2008, -6/+11Yeah, wouldn't want to be like one of those 'European Socialist Countries' who rank higher than you in standard of living rankings.
- Justice101, on 07/25/2008, -1/+6It's the principle of the matter. Just like how many people from your country would it take to be killed before you waged war on a country? It's a kind of trick question, the answer is always 1.
- blackcloud333, on 07/25/2008, -2/+7I thought he was trying to start mending the recently broken ties with other countries. You mean people are going to take pictures of him? That's awful!
- jackieblu, on 07/24/2008, -36/+40Bush is an a 1 - *****! He is in fact doing - exactly what he is pretending to try and prevent ! So is McSame !
Obama 08
Yes we can, yes we will! - TheRhinoceros, on 07/25/2008, -0/+4It's stupid that those people are not allowed to go to a speech. Listening to a candidate speak about foreign policy positions and what he would do if he were president is not partisan political activity. Political activity yes. Partisan, no.
What exactly is partisan about telling people your viewpoints? Am I being "partisan" when I espouse a particular viewpoint? No. I'm simply being an American, speaking my mind. Nothing "partisan" involved. Just like you are when you make a political point.
The only thing here that's "partisan" is the decision to bar personnel from attending. It's not like it really makes that much of a difference if a few guys who have time off on a Thursday go see a concert and a speech. Who makes this crap up?...Oh that's right. Georgie Porgie. President Doofus.
That's my two cents.
election-coverage.com - vexingmodstwo, on 07/25/2008, -7/+11I have a question: Who paid for this campaign speech in Germany? Or was he speaking as a Senator and therefore campaigning on the US citizens' dime?
Can a candidate use funds donated in the US on foreign soil? Can a Senator allegedly on a fact finding mission campaign for President on the side?
Why is no one asking these questions? - EarlOfLade, on 07/25/2008, -2/+6It's just that Europeans are paying half of what you do in health care tax and still have free health care, I say you get ass ***** and ask for seconds!
- Diggnabbit, on 07/25/2008, -2/+5Ah yes. I'm sure it was the mega-draw of the popular reggae band....
- walnoj, on 07/25/2008, -0/+3I am willing to bet that Barack Obama has visited more wounded US soldiers than you have.
- IamZed, on 07/25/2008, -1/+4N. Now you too have been instructed.
- rearlgrant, on 07/25/2008, -0/+3I am, whether it's Republicans, Democrats, Venutians, etc... Partisans can never keep their hands off of the oppositions, oh say, passport files. A few idiots have ruined it for a majority of good public servants. But I believe Machiaveli -- power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely -- I don't care what party is in power, it's true.
- egoideal, on 07/25/2008, -3/+6LOL at the wittle republican trying to be intelligent when he doesn't even have basic reading comprehension.
- AFJon, on 07/25/2008, -1/+4Obama or the Libertarian candidate? How is it that on some days you feel like you agree with Libertarian ideology and then on others you are a democrat supporter? I think you might need to sort out what it is you actually believe in instead of drinking whatever kool-aid is served that day.
- chase001, on 07/25/2008, -0/+3Love to see them at the Hague.
- MacEnvy, on 07/25/2008, -0/+3Heeheehee, the Republicans thought that they had won when Bush was put into office ... little did they know that his incompetence would cause a huge swing to the left in this country. This makes me happy :)
- Stavrosian, on 07/25/2008, -0/+3I would presume the main purpose is to demonstrate to American citizens how popular he is with all of your potential allies, should you choose to care what the rest of the world thinks of you.
- allnone, on 07/25/2008, -4/+7Looked at your profile and saw that you're one of those idiots, that stand up for Karl Rove. That alone will always make me digg you down.
- enantiodromia, on 07/25/2008, -1/+4Maybe it's time our citizens, domestic and abroad, stop honoring the "freedom zone" and "you are banned from listening to a US senator speak" rules, on a large scale.
- Dustin00, on 07/25/2008, -0/+3At least Obama can manage to learn -- his opponent can't remember a damn thing and remembers less every day, practically hiding in his tent at this point it's so bad.
Obviously taking trips 100% funded by the taxpayer doesn't necessarily teach you anything, no matter how many times you go into a dangerous territory and have pictures taken of you walking their streets. - rearlgrant, on 07/25/2008, -1/+3That's why, given the free market, the Euro is worth more than the dollar.
- Muyoso, on 07/25/2008, -4/+6Meanwhile, Obama cancels a meeting with wounded soldiers in Germany because he was running late for his speech, then after the speech, decides to go SHOPPING for the rest of the night. Priorities, priorities.
- swrostmore, on 07/25/2008, -0/+2IF you'd said "US GDP per capita is higher than Europe" you wouldn't be wrong. However GDP per capita and Standard of Living are two completely different things. I don't expect somebody who doesn't understand that "prior to" means the same thing as "before" to be able to appreciate the factual difference between per capita income and standard of living, so I'll just let my argument rest on the fact that The Economist, which you attack for being "subjective," has even more solid right-wing, pro-capitalist bona fides than the Wall Street Journal.
- Lynx55, on 07/25/2008, -0/+2CNN just reported that this was paid for by Obama's Campaign funds. So all you dissenters..stick that.
