- elf202, on 07/24/2008, -18/+181Mc Cain's response to the speech (in O'Donnell's interview) was especially surly and unbecoming. All Americans should be happy to see American flags being waved abroad, having an American represent them who doesn't swagger and smirk, whose IQ is not considered as equivalent to room temperature and who is not a protest/burning effigy magnet. The man is smart and eloquent, he exudes competence and goodwill... and guess what, he's an American! His personal qualities and history represent the best aspirations of the the United States, and he was applauded and adored! The country should be beaming with pride and say ... 'What other country would a Barack Obama be possible? Only in the USA!!' Congratulations, America.
- dBass, on 07/24/2008, -22/+133Let's face it, McCain is way out of his league. And with each new desperate act, it becomes more and more clear: McCain is a dick.
It amazes me that McCain is the best the GOP could offer the American public as their choice to be POTUS, for these times. Shameful. - actorboy, on 07/25/2008, -1/+65It amazes me more that McCain is doing so well in the polls. I think Obama supporters need to stop pretending the choice is obvious or we will lose this contest. We need to act as if he is behind by 20 points.
- 13373h4X0r, on 07/25/2008, -3/+53If you read the transcript of Obama's speech, you will see that the 5th sentence is: "Tonight, I speak to you not as a candidate for President, but as a citizen - a proud citizen of the United States, and a fellow citizen of the world."
"acroyear2" paraphrased Obama's statement in a misleading manner.
"vexingmodstwo" said that Obama's statement is a "lie", but I think "vexingmodstwo" intentionally oversimplified the statement to make his accusation.
Obama's world tour is definitely part of his campaign, and his speech in Berlin is definitely intended to make us here in America gain confidence about Obama's competence in interacting with world leaders and world populations, but his statement that he is speaking to that audience "not as a candidate for President" can nonetheless be true! The things Obama said in his speech are things that many Americans in our government would want to say to the people of Berlin -- and to the people of the world. No part of Obama's speech involved contrasting himself with McCain, and no part of his speech involved the upcoming election; and so it is honest to characterize his speech -- to the present audience -- as not being about him being a candidate for President. Again, Obama is well aware of how people here in America will interpret his speech in the context of the presidential campaign, but his speech to the people of Berlin was about America, Germany, and the world. It's the speech many patriots would love to give, to spread the word about true American ideals and goals. Obama can give that speech, and he did -- and I think Americans should be very proud that we created the environment for one such as Obama to be able to do what he is doing.
- hehatemee, on 07/25/2008, -21/+69I am proud of being an American. I wish all of us can forget our political affiliations and enjoy this speech.
How many times have we seen so many people show up to see a speech made by a politician. Barack will be a great ambassador for USA. Last 8 years have done a lot of damage to our reputation. It is still nice to see that folks in Germany can separate Bush's policies from the people of United States. - crowbar77, on 07/25/2008, -14/+58Oh so we like the the MSM now? Ok, sorry it's hard to keep up.
- acroyear2, on 07/24/2008, -27/+69Obama said, "They were presidents. I am a citizen."
- llamasonic, on 07/25/2008, -23/+62Bush has made it tough for us Americans living overseas. From the tanked dollar to our credibility being flushed down the toilet. Obama has already made it better for us. Thanks Barry!
- Diggnabbit, on 07/25/2008, -2/+34This is such a rhetorical Catch-22. First McCain accuses of Obama of having no foreign policy experience and basically dares him to go abroad and deal with foreign countries. Then, Obama does so, and it's all "he's nto the president! Why is he going abroad?"
Puh-leeze. - vegx, on 07/25/2008, -9/+34Yeah, because he clearly meant that literally.
- actorboy, on 07/25/2008, -3/+25Is that you, John McCain? You pushed him to take this trip, now you're bitching that he did what you asked.
- Pitstopper, on 07/25/2008, -11/+30Hope Obama gets this reception throughout his tenure.
- hmunkey, on 07/25/2008, -4/+22If Iran DID have nuclear weapons and they clearly stated they would destroy Israel, the military option would be on the table no matter what. I don't see what the whole issue is.
Even the most liberal of presidents would have to consider using military force to stop a nuclear attack on an allied (albeit irresponsible and unfair) nation.
Love or hate Israel, you surely can't wish them to be nuked. - choochee, on 07/25/2008, -4/+22Obama isn't a rock star. He's not JFK (even JFK wasn't "JFK"). It's time to stop turning our politicians into rock stars. They are EMPLOYEES of the USA, not entertainers.
- cyrix, on 07/25/2008, -3/+19No ***** Sherlock. Want a cookie?
Honestly what does it ***** matter if a person is conservative, liberal, democrat, republican, green, gay, straight, pink, banana, oxford.... (ok those last few are a tad ridiculous but they emphasize my point.) I wasn't around when Bobby Kennedy was alive, but I've read up on his career, his views, etc... And honestly I haven't seen a single person since him that I would have loved to see President more than Obama. Yes he shifts and sways at times like every other candidate out there, but the most important thing to me is that he can inspire hope. I don't give a ***** if it's empty on his side of the equation, the important thing is that he motivates people now to believe and strive for change for the better. If McCain could do it just as well I'd all up on his ***** too because America really does need someone to poke the general public and say "hey you can do something" as opposed to another stale boring candidate that you can only get behind because of one or two things they support.
/rant. - Diggnabbit, on 07/25/2008, -2/+18You say that like it's a bad thing.
(Plus, I think I'm old enough, at least on the internet, to be considered wise.) - glucoseboy, on 07/25/2008, -3/+18Who cares what the media thinks?
- alapoet, on 07/25/2008, -8/+23So whataboutdave, if Obama hadn't disavowed being a president, you'd have attacked him for being presumptuous.
Since he DID disavow being a president, and said he was just an ordinary citizen, you attacked him for THAT.
I see what you did there. I'm not buying it. - atdigg, on 07/25/2008, -4/+19...will they still call you a racist?
- tehsilentcircus, on 07/25/2008, -3/+17How many times do we have to tell you to go ***** yourself until you actually do it? You stubborn stubborn *****. Sheesh.
I'd like to see McCain have the balls to do anything remotely close to what Obama did today.
Not to mention McCain is so back-asswards on every important issue this country faces today, so I have no clue how you can go around spouting this ridiculous ***** and take yourself seriously. Come on. - alapoet, on 07/25/2008, -6/+20So whataboutdave, you're saying that the U.S.A. is perfect?
I guess you're about as big an idiot as Bush. - RedPhalanx, on 07/25/2008, -10/+23How many electoral votes does Germany get again?
- llamasonic, on 07/25/2008, -0/+13By getting 10s of thousands of folks overseas of to show up and celebrate America.
By giving hope that America stands for something more than premptive wars, torture, and popular culture.
By getting the World excited about the prospects of a more peaceful and prosperous future.
And most important, by reminding us that Bush is packing his bags for TX !! - sauron256, on 07/25/2008, -0/+13Yes. Older and wiser Americans also know that masturbation causes blindness.
- DaRiz, on 07/25/2008, -13/+26I was watching the speech live on msnbc and while he was speaking I got goosebumps. Some of the stuff he was saying was powerful and the crowd really cheered for him at some points yelling out OBAMA OBAMA.
- Jensaarai, on 07/25/2008, -2/+15It's almost as if he's trying to show Americans concerned about his foreign policy abilities that he has what it takes.
It's almost as if he's trying to win the election by addressing people's concerns about him.
HOW DARE HE!?!?!!?!?!111 - joshak, on 07/25/2008, -1/+12Only in the USA?? Really?
Keep up that trademark American arrogance, the world loves you for it! - Jensaarai, on 07/25/2008, -0/+10He's certainly shown that he can defrost our somewhat chilly relationship as of late with Europeans, to the point where 300,000 people come to see an American speak, wave American flags, and even chant "USA USA USA!" -- He revives the spirit of support for America that Bush squandered after the outpouring that came from September 11.
He's shown that he understands Europe, and its place as a continent filled with allies we will need if we want to accomplish anything on the world stage.
He's shown deference, humility, diplomacy, and nuance.
If he becomes our president, his ability to martial our allies to a common cause is no longer one that can be in doubt.
I'd call that a pretty good result from one speech. - HasselTheeHoff, on 07/25/2008, -12/+21I thought it was a fantastic speech. I just really hope his ideals turn into more than words.
- tidu, on 07/25/2008, -1/+10Exactly. If Obama was winning by a landslide, what would CNN talk about all day? It's a shame that they have to drag it on like this.
- ZenMojo, on 07/25/2008, -4/+13Technically he said, and this is the quote from the article, that he would take "no options off the table."
I have to digg you down for letting your head explode over a political truism. No one ever says they'll take any option off the table. - vegx, on 07/25/2008, -13/+22These comments suck.
- hipnerd, on 07/25/2008, -4/+13Morons take options off the table all the time, like refusing to negotiate without preconditions or ruling out impeachment proceedings without even investigating to see if crimes were committed...
- Eldorian, on 07/25/2008, -3/+11Donut with a little frosting on the top. On the surface you think, oh hey, this donut is different than the other plain ones in this box. You take a bite out of it and realize it still tastes the same as the others. Just has a little more sugar coating on the top to make you feel better about it.
By the time you finish eating it you suddenly don't feel too well anymore. - inactive, on 07/25/2008, -30/+38Obama speech does not = President Reagan speech.
President Reagan At Berlin.

Nuff Said!! - Reynardine, on 07/25/2008, -3/+11"Tonight, I speak to you not as a candidate for President, but as a citizen - a proud citizen of the United States, and a fellow citizen of the world. "
That's not a lie, he's just aiming to show global perspective. - Jensaarai, on 07/25/2008, -7/+15"...this is the moment when the world should support the millions of Iraqis who seek to rebuild their lives, even as we pass responsibility to the Iraqi government and finally bring this war to a close."
You fail. - crowbar77, on 07/25/2008, -1/+9There is the possibility the polls are "improved" so mccain is closer. That way the media can go on pretending its a tight race and gives them more to talk about.
- ShellShock11, on 07/25/2008, -3/+11America is a nation OF the world. Last time I checked working towards global unity and cooperation wasn't a bad thing. You are an ignorant idealist who believes we can simply turn a blind side on the rest of the world.
- MacEnvy, on 07/25/2008, -3/+10Oh TJATL, you're just bitter because Ron Paul can't get 200,000 people to go see him *anywhere*, let alone a foreign nation.
- Shiftgood, on 07/25/2008, -4/+11alapoet.
Skip to 5:34 ... obama was all "oh please forgive us! oh please, we'll do anything you want. I'll be your best friend, ill wash your car.. ill do your homework! come onnnnn guyyss.. im sorry so so sorry"
You didnt see that part? yeah.... nether did i. - inactive, on 07/25/2008, -1/+8I'm not a Paul supporter but he had some very sound ideas. A lunatic? That's a bit harsh.
- Badandy127, on 07/25/2008, -52/+59Ugghh. Stop with the Huffington Post articles. Jesus, every god damn day.
- bababoosh, on 07/25/2008, -1/+8"Obama is a communist change agent."
-seriously? Explain this charge please. I would love to see some one back up this claim that Obama is a communist. If you can't then please consider that and stop listening to the asshats that spew that bs. - actorboy, on 07/25/2008, -4/+11Is there a "report as nutcase" button? Anyone?
- ray86, on 07/25/2008, -4/+11I'm a big Obama fan, but when I see something really positive about him and it's from The Huffington Post it seems less credible.
- inactive, on 07/25/2008, -4/+11McCain supports disappoint me, I thought you guys would take it like men.
- ZenMojo, on 07/25/2008, -1/+8Most of the Obama supporters were pissed at Clinton because our mouths were watering at the idea of Obama and McCain being in the same room together being asked serious questions. Too bad McCain refused Obama's counter-offer of three debates.
- Xondar, on 07/25/2008, -0/+7And that's why McCain was in Canada earlier where there are zero electoral votes while Obama was back at home talking about issues that matter.
- Reynardine, on 07/25/2008, -9/+15Since I seem to be posting down in the reaches of McCain supporter territory, can any McCain supporters please tell me why they *want* McCain to be president?
As far as I can tell, he's shown utter ignorance of global politics (didn't understand the difference between Sunni and Shi'ite), no economic knowledge (his own admission) and poor taste in advisors (hired a former Microsoft advertiser as technological consultant where Obama hired an MIT phD).
Even coming from a fundamentalist Christian background, I can't support the man's views on religion
(read: I understand why separation of church and state is a *good* thing)

Please, can somebody please point out what they see in this man, if anything? -
