- relaxeder, on 04/17/2009, -35/+167That was terrific. Seeing so many people across the world excited about a potential United States president gives me hope that the damage done by the Bush White House to our reputation abroad isn't permanent.
- mrigns, on 07/24/2008, -26/+154According to German officials 215,000 people attended the speech, and it was broadcast live on public TV.
- AwakeningAZ, on 07/24/2008, -26/+148I cannot fathom the standing of the United States in the world if McCain is elected over this man.
- relaxeder, on 04/17/2009, -21/+122Also, I think its funny that John McCain has attacked him on several occasions during his overseas trip already and Obama hasn't yet attacked him once. It just serves to illustrate that he can control himself better as a candidate and a presidential contender.
- visionaryIX, on 07/24/2008, -34/+131I want to believe him, I really do.
But as a Law student, I really struggle to ignore that he voted for the Patriot Act and FISA. He's no messiah, he's a politician first and foremost.
Digg me down, but its the truth. - crazyoldman, on 07/24/2008, -28/+109After seeing that speech I don't think theirs anyway Obama can lose. I want to see McCain try to do a speech like that without putting everyone to sleep.
- CitizenGeek2006, on 07/24/2008, -49/+122Such a magnificent speech!
- hulkamaniaz, on 07/24/2008, -15/+83Meanwhile our good friend McCain visited a German restaurant to counter the speech.
- DiggasWAttitude, on 07/24/2008, -7/+73And many waving US flags, didn't think I would live to see that again.
- zoewez, on 07/24/2008, -31/+93If Obama isn't elected President, then there is something definitely wrong with our country!
Obama's speech was TERRIFIC! It was inclusive, saying the whole world matters, and not just the USA and it's corporate interests. McCain keeps bumbling along and the MSM keeps covering for him, trying their best to build him up.
But, I don't trust the Republicans, and their dirty tricks, which we all know are coming. Let's keep our fingers crossed, and do everything possible so that we don't have another four years of the corrupt Bush Administration carried on by McCain. - shutaro, on 07/24/2008, -11/+66I want to see McCain try to do a speech like that without falling asleep.
- Useche, on 07/24/2008, -38/+89did you hear them chanting YES WE CAN ??
It is TIME to rebuild bridges and forge a more peaceful future.
Si Se Puede Cambiar! - Rotzooi, on 07/24/2008, -23/+70As an American living in Spain (5 years now), it really encourages me to see how enthusiastic people are about Obama. They have been sour since the 2000 elections. Europe sees Barack Obama as the antithesis of George W. Bush. Confronted with the state of the world, that makes all the difference. For Europeans, Obama symbolizes the original, positive, American spirit. He may not represent the full complexity of America, but he certainly represents the America that pre-neocon-rule used to exist in people's imagination. He allows for the return of American Dream.
NB watch the video, the reaction of the crowd to him speaking about his goat-herder father is very funny (at 45s) - Bologner, on 07/24/2008, -22/+66I probably won't be believed, but I don't care. To clarify, I support Obama.
Do you people listen to yourselves? This obsessive fawning is disturbing! It, honestly, makes me sick to think that some of you people ignore everything Obama has flip flopped on in the past month (FISA, Iran) and still spout off how this speech is his greatest yet. I went to his rally in Madison, WI, and that was my first glimpse of this hysteria. I grimace in pain every time I hear "Yes we can!" now.
Seriously, can we stop with this rubbish?
factcheck.org - Rizoh, on 07/24/2008, -30/+66One of his best speeches. Ever.
- inactive, on 07/24/2008, -2/+32People really want to like America again.
- Rotzooi, on 07/24/2008, -8/+37Let's see McCain say something, anything, that is at least factually accurate.
- relaxeder, on 04/17/2009, -7/+31Well, I don't know, conservatives still treat Ronald Reagan like some kind of godsend, what with that whole address at the wall and everything.
- exomni, on 07/24/2008, -3/+27Of course he's a politician. Just like JFK, just like Lincoln. You think those great men were perfect? You think they didn't lie themselves? You think they didn't play politician?
Well wake the ***** up, open your eyes and take a wiff of reality. What we need now isn't a messiah, what we need is a better politician. - rearlgrant, on 07/24/2008, -14/+36Anthropology of Empire:
Obama goes to Berlin and gets applause while speaking English.
Angela Merkel comes to the US and speaks German, and Americans wonder why she doesn't speak English...
I listened to this over the interTubes... Best political speech I've heard in years. - preneel, on 07/24/2008, -25/+47Stand as One!
- goldfenix, on 07/24/2008, -3/+25Watch at the 6:20 moment when the camera zooms out.
I don't know how to describe it better than saying, "That's a lot of people." - xxrealmsxx, on 07/24/2008, -6/+26No, your'e right.
To me he fell off after he distanced himself from Palestinians and even more after he gave into the establishment stance of saber rattling against Iran.
He's the best viable candidate, but when you look at the choices that doesn't say much. - ShellShock11, on 07/24/2008, -4/+23Let's just say I would not have wanted to be in charge of security for that event...
- Rotzooi, on 07/24/2008, -3/+22Don't know why you are getting dugg down - it's funny because it's true.
- truthproduct, on 07/24/2008, -2/+21Hey, it happend to Gore in 2000. Then (after 4 years of BuSh) WE re-elected the man. Anything is possible.
- digghasnoethics, on 07/24/2008, -3/+20Obama can help begin to rehabilitate the US back in with the civilised world. However it will require that those guilty of torture are bought to trial, so there is a road to travel.
On the other hand, if the US screws it up again and fails to elect the obviously better candidate, then that's basically it over - out for the count. Can you seriously see anyone who was there today believing "its not the US its just bush" if the US electorate screws up again.
Its a one shot deal, no final chances after this one. - MatthewDuke, on 07/24/2008, -8/+24I am a donut
- Stevo23, on 07/24/2008, -2/+18Wow, Europeans enthusiastically waving American flags...when was the last time that happened?
- Rotzooi, on 07/24/2008, -8/+24The bigger government argument, yaaawn.
The Republicans have made the government as big as it'll ever get, in all the wrong places and for all the wrong reasons.
Increased social programs are good, we don't want people left behind, unlike some GOP ***** seem intent on doing.
Higher taxes are good, we don't want to have to get the country into even more debt. Right now, the neocons are using Chinese money to bail out huge corporations in some sort of sick form of corporate socialism. I'd rather see them not borrow that money at all. My grandchildren will be paying that off. I'm ashamed of that.
Dream on, Old America. I'm looking forward to a New America. - TypeEE, on 07/24/2008, -0/+16You only need to attack when you are the underdog. Clinton didn't start attacking until she realize she was heading south.
- peticsu, on 07/24/2008, -1/+17good observation
- sonnybobiche, on 07/24/2008, -2/+17Did you notice how unenthusiastic everyone suddenly got when he asked for Germany to send troops to Afghanistan?
"Unity!" *Applause* "Freedom!" *Applause* "Send some troops to fight alongside ours!" *Cricket* - zeusthemoose, on 07/24/2008, -2/+17Nah, he tired to hold a town hall meeting on it, but no one showed up sadly.
- inactive, on 07/24/2008, -14/+29He can talk the talk, but time will only tell if he can actually make ANY difference in DC.
- rz8472, on 07/24/2008, -6/+21Whether you do or not, I agree; the honeymoon is over.
Still, politics is all about compromise... and I will vote unflinchingly for Obama after seeing what Grandpa McCain has in store for the next 4 years.
It was a good speech though. - WELLDOITLIVE, on 07/24/2008, -11/+25Dehydrated babies disagree
- noahgelman, on 07/24/2008, -1/+14REGAN PAAAUUUUNCH!!!
- MiddleOfNowhere, on 07/24/2008, -3/+16I was there, 50 meters from the stage. It was a great crowd; like at a Radiohead concert - mixed, lots of young people, many Americans. So much hope in their faces - a bit too church-like for my taste, but it all felt very sincere.
But the really amazing part was how *quiet* these 200,000 people - Germans, Dutch, Americans - were. They obviously wanted to listen to what he had to say, not just cheer. It was not just an Anti-Bush wankfest, but a rather sincere attempt to re-discover the amazing, real U.S. of A., a country that would not torture people, ***** on its allies and spy on its own citizens.
Well. We in Europe are only bystanders/business partners here, but personally I think that if you don't elect this man, you have missed the chance of the century to prove how great your country can be.
But then, it may be just me. - shutaro, on 07/24/2008, -3/+16Well, it is tough to beat "REGAN SMASH!"
- Chrino, on 07/24/2008, -33/+46Obama = Batman.
Neither can do any wrong in the eyes of diggers.
Reading the comments above and reflecting over the past couple of weeks, it's kind of pathetic the way stuff is worshiped around here. - venicerocco, on 07/24/2008, -9/+21There's a gradual evolution from being at the center of the universe, to being just one part of the universe. We used to think that the Earth was at the center, but we've since realized we're wrong. Kids think they are at the center of the world until they realize otherwise. Those who think America is the be-all-and-end-all and center of the universe (i.e. Republicans) will hopefully soon realize they are wrong. Or ***** off back to the stone age.
- benburned, on 07/24/2008, -5/+1749 seconds in made me laugh.
- inactive, on 07/24/2008, -18/+29Did obama claim to be on any more committees he's not on?
or claim to have written any more bills he hasnt?! - theutopian, on 07/24/2008, -4/+15Hitler was not a socialist, he was a fascist. The Nazi's merely co-opted the word for the name of their party. If anything the Nazi's are the exact opposite of anything resembling socialist.
- thisoneisunique, on 07/24/2008, -4/+14I live in Heidelberg and I watched Obama's speech together with my 3 roommates (we're all Germans) on tv ...
Admittedly, most of what he says, only a candidate can afford to say and not someone in the highest office - but still: you've got someone there, guys, don't screw it up :)
The kind of hype Obama caused in Germany, frankly, borders on being ridiculous; my three most-frequented, major news sites are devoting their front pages to Obama's visit and speech. The countries biggest tabloid morphed Obama's face into faces of prominent German politicians and demanded "be more like Obama"... Everyone's going nuts. - Aliwalla, on 07/24/2008, -1/+11Wow, props to the English language that 200,000 people can pitch up a non-english speaking country and listen to an entire speech in English.
- julianrod, on 07/24/2008, -3/+13This guy should be a detective
- TobiasParker, on 07/24/2008, -10/+20I want him to win, not because i know he will prove doubters wrong, but because i want him to. If he wins, and we are treated to 4 more years of the same, I will truly believe that the world is beyond repair.
- theutopian, on 07/24/2008, -7/+17The American Dream is that anything is possible if you work hard enough. And look what he's done. He's living the American Dream.
