- Bobombom, on 02/22/2008, -12/+144Obama is in the right. He summed it up best when he said that in order to dissolve notions of American arrogance, we must be willing to dissolve the inaccessibility of the president. We gotta take the US president of the pedestal.
- zKman, on 02/22/2008, -6/+96Look, we've been ignoring Cuba for how many years now, and what have they changed? Obama's not talking about giving despots photo ops, he wants to meet them face to face and tell them to stop the BS.
- EricDrawback, on 02/22/2008, -3/+44Don't believe the rhetoric, DIPLOMACY DOES NOT EQUAL APPEASEMENT. We should always be willing to pull up a seat at the bargaining table.
- reuscel, on 02/22/2008, -4/+40So, talking with world leaders can be more productive than bombing their innocent citizens? Hang on, it's gonna take me some time to process that whopper.
- neognostic, on 02/22/2008, -13/+48On behalf of all Democrats, thank you for leaving.
- Gabberwok, on 02/22/2008, -5/+37The only reason we ignore Cuba is because it wins votes in Florida.
- davidrools, on 02/22/2008, -1/+31I don't understand Clinton's thinking on the issue. Cuba isn't going to turn into a democracy just to talk to the United States president. Her stance is a guaranteed way of keeping things just as they are: with Cubans suffering (somewhat) and no cigars for us.
- Redline500, on 02/22/2008, -1/+30The invasion and occupation of Iraq on shoddy intelligence and without an exit strategy was ridiculous. There is NOTHING ridiculous about tracking down Bin Laden and retaliating against the Taliban for state sponsored terrorism / acts of war.
- theaceoffire, on 02/22/2008, -3/+28True. Communication is the only medicine that fix social problems.
- inactive, on 02/22/2008, -6/+30Could you imagine how history would have turned out if we never talked with the soviet union during the cold war?
Like it or not Hillary, talking and negotiations work. - inactive, on 02/22/2008, -3/+24You would think that after 50 years of applying a policy of confrontation in which every president has said "we will not talk to Cuba until...." we should understand that the policy has now worked and will not work.
But there's Hillary saying that what we should do is keep on the same path that has led to nowhere. Our antagonism is the only way that the communists have been able to maintain power in Cuba. Its the only way that Little Kim stays in power in North Korea. When we stopped with the embargoes and saber rattling against Vietnam what happened? They became our trading partners and friends and they began to open up their country.
Hillary's stance on Cuba is a crystal clear indication that, at least in foreign policy, she is planning to continue the disastrous neocon world empire scheme. For some reason she is Karl Rove's choice for President. - wild, on 02/22/2008, -1/+21You heard wrong.
Hillary says it would take several years of good will and improvements in order for Cuba (and others) to earn the right to meet with the President. Obama thinks there should be an understanding that improvements will be discussed before the meeting, but he isn't interested in waiting years. He thinks intial discussions will help fuel improvements. - Hetman, on 02/22/2008, -2/+16This could be horrible. If we talk to our enemies we might actually start to understand and like them. And if we start to understand their situation and feel for them we might stop fighting them. And if we stop fighting them then we would not need to spend billions of dollars on weapons and our army. And then how would we justify having a billion dollar military industry in America? And how would people who work for these industries become billionaires. They wouldn't and that would be horrible.
- GoneGreen, on 02/22/2008, -2/+16Dumbass... you didn't watch the debate... he said that there would need to be some preliminary work done, (negotiations) but then would come to the table... You aren't getting dugg down because I didn't like your comment you are being dugg down because you mis-stated the facts.
- TheTaoOfBill, on 02/22/2008, -5/+18I'm a Ron Paul supporter for the most part but Obama will be my 2nd choice.
One thing I never understood about Ron Paul supporters is how much they follow the latest conspiracy theory without asking for very much evidence.
The CFR for example. There isn't much information on them at all. We know their agenda but we have no evidence that they have somehow taken over our government to make us believe that there is a choice but really everyone is leading toward that agenda. There is also very little evidence on whether or not Obama really is a member of the CFR. - ChristBehemoth, on 02/22/2008, -5/+18I'm totally with Obama on this one. Before actually burning up all the tax money in a war that'll never end, one should rather go for some reasonable talking first.
- yikiad, on 02/22/2008, -2/+14On behalf of a former Republican, seems like your in good company with the Bush-McCain War Machine. I crossed party line this year specifically for hope like this. I don't totally agree with everything on the Obama side, especially the budget financial issues, but the most important aspect of this election is diplomacy, and trying to build relations with other nations, which has virtually disappeared from the Republicans.
Just my opinion. - inactive, on 02/22/2008, -1/+13no ***** ***** sherlock.. maybe you should read my post before responding.. especially the part about how would have history turned out if we NEVER talked to them.. oh wait, thats the whole post.
- pintomp3, on 02/22/2008, -3/+14america's foreign policy seems to a combination of schoolyard bully crossed with clique-snobbery. we really need to grow out of this and start treating the rest of the world with the same respect we demand from them.
- hc5831, on 02/22/2008, -4/+15Obviously what we have been doing hasn't been working. Obama believes we should at least try new options. You won't know how effective they are unless you try them. I totally agree with trying new tactics. It is foolish to keep doing the same old crap that doesn't work.
- inactive, on 02/22/2008, -1/+11In Soviet Russia, ... ***** it i dunno, someone help
- andburn1, on 02/22/2008, -4/+14Wow, this is the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard. She said she wanted to look towards normalization, but that an audience with the President would be reserved for those who had shown good faith. She would send representatives until progress was made, at which point she would go herself. Look, this is a MINOR difference in foreign policy. Personally, I agree with Obama, but this article is skewed so badly that I wonder why the ***** everyone bitches about Fox News. I'm a liberal, and so Fox's conservative propaganda is upsetting, but I, for one, am against propaganda in general. Open your eyes, diggers. Rawstory, Dailykos, and Crook and Liars are all blatantly biased and unreliable sources. If you all had WATCHED the democratic debate last night, you wouldnt have to rely on biased commentary to formulate your opinions. I know some of you may have watched it, but I guarantee you, most diggers rely on this kind of website as their primary source of information. It makes them just as ignorant as the Evangelical Conservatives who think *insert ridiculous religious sentiment here.* Wake up guys, Hillary is not Bush. She's part of the Old Guard, sure. She's outdated, sure. She's a bitch, SURE. But all in all, policy-wise, she and Obama are almost identical.
- niradg, on 02/22/2008, -3/+13When did we as a nation become so ignorant that the idea of merely talking with our enemies has become radioactive? Was Ronald Reagan wrong to talk with Gorbachev?
- GoneGreen, on 02/22/2008, -3/+13Hillary was so pathetic in last nights debate I almost felt sorry for her... It was like a Yugo racing a Ferrari... so sad for her.
- deadbaby, on 02/22/2008, -3/+12So do you think there's someone sitting around at a Clinton campaign strategy meeting that says "Let's try to sound more like ignorant war mongering Republicans.... our base will eat it up" I don't think the Clinton campaign understands the whole concept of a primary -- you have to convince your side to vote for you. They have run this whole primary campaign like it was the general election (right down to the negative attacks on other candidates)
- nickolausj, on 02/22/2008, -1/+10dugg you down to prove you're a idiot.
- dshPls, on 02/22/2008, -8/+16"CFR as their goal is to continue this conflict between Cuba and the united States"
Evidence for this claim, plz.
And I know I'll never get an answer, but I'll continue to ask every conspiracy theorist I see for some actual evidence on their claims. It never happens, but I can't help but imagine what cashman thinks as he trys to ignore the fact he can't back any of these statements up. - bagelmaster, on 02/22/2008, -1/+9Pretty sure the rest of the world doesn't give a ***** if our president visits them. Just like we don't give a ***** if another country's president visits us. Unless it's the Iranian one, then rednecks come from the woodwork to bitch about it
- deMonkey, on 02/22/2008, -3/+11Someone's being mature, someone's not.
Mom: "Go say you're sorry to John, the fight was stupid, and you want to be friends"
Son: "But mom! I don't want to talk to John, I don't like him anymore. He's stupid." - pintomp3, on 02/22/2008, -0/+8she's thinking ahead to the general election and appealing to the old school cuban exiles in miami. they pretty much run the show down there in terms of politics and media. obama makes a moral calculation, hillary makes a political calculation.
- TheTaoOfBill, on 02/22/2008, -0/+8Simple if you value civil rights over economic rights.
Idealy I'd love if the government backed out of both. But I am forced to choose between McCain who cares about lowering spending (except when it comes to overseas) but doesn't give a ***** about civil rights in the name of security. Or Obama who doesn't give a ***** about corporate rights but will take steps in reducing government in our daily lives.
I'd rather be at peace and have our personal freedoms restored but have to sacrafice low taxes and low spending then have low taxes and low spending and sacrafice peace and liberty.
Ron Paul would have been both. Obama is half. But he's the better half. - inactive, on 02/22/2008, -2/+10W, is that you?
- ohplease, on 02/22/2008, -0/+8Ya, seeing as Osama bin Laden publically declared Saddam Hussein an infidel and his secular Baath party was in direct contradiction to the Koran and Sharia Law, I'm sure Iraq and Al Qaeda were HOMIES. Also, considering the Fedayeen captured and tortured Al Qaeda and other Wahhabist operatives in Iraq on a regular basis, they may have even been LOVERS..
- dinostabOMG, on 02/22/2008, -0/+7This is what any power does when it wants to drag its feet on resolving an issue. It's *****.
- pintomp3, on 02/22/2008, -1/+8in sure invading another country that has nothing to do with either will clear it up.
- nickolausj, on 02/22/2008, -3/+10She's the same old same old. I'm with Obama on this one, we can't be afraid to deal with these people. We can't expect them see the world the same way we do.
- goomba323, on 02/22/2008, -0/+7Well, to be fair, after 444 days of American hostages held prisoner in Iran during the Carter administration, Reagan pretty much got them freed with "just words". So I think a charismatic, understanding, reasonable man like Obama can better our relations with other countries around the world.
- inactive, on 02/22/2008, -0/+6Dude - you just filled up the Digg server!
- bjs3171, on 02/22/2008, -2/+8IT'S CALLED DIPLOMACY. JESUS CHRIST.
have you seriously never heard the phrase "keep your friends close, and keep your enemies closer?" how the hell have you never heard that phrase before? - dshPls, on 02/22/2008, -1/+7Great comment. I've often times buried a WND story, and then the Crooks and Liars story right below it. The best thing you can do is watch Fox, CNN and read Digg together, so you can examine stories from every angle of the political spectrum. Sometimes the accusations are just so ridiculous however, it's counter-productive. Such was the case with Obama and claims he was a Muslim. There's a good amount of voters who actually believe that now, I've met two, and found numerous people on Digg who still push the lie.
- apochcrypha, on 02/22/2008, -0/+6Think of Star Trek: Picard would always hail a Romulan warbird, even if they were considered enemies. He would always talk out situations with them. This kind of diplomacy avoided conflicts, and prevented a huge war between the Federation and the Romulans.
Coming back to our world, Hillary Clinton refuses to be like this. She'd rather not hail the Cubans, which hurts both our countries. This is why Obama should be president, he is like Picard. He will be diplomatic and will open up new ties to countries our previous regimes thought of as enemies - eir574, on 02/22/2008, -0/+6I think we can safely assume that Obama did not mean that he'd immediately sit down at the negotiating table with absolutely anyone who made a direct threat or acted against us. You can't negotiate unless the other party is willing, which includes being willing to take part in the preparation that Obama said would have to take place before any negotiations began. There's a huge difference between al qaeda and Cuba. Do you really think Obama meant he'd be willing to appease anyone who attacked us? That seems beyond ridiculous.
- digggggggggg, on 02/22/2008, -1/+7That's a gross oversimplification. What's the reason that we have always considered Cuba to be the 'enemy'? It's because the Communists under Castro overthrew the despotic Batista regime that the US supported.
It's just been an idealistic pissing contest for the past couple of decades as to why we don't even want to talk to Cuba. If we really want real change, and better living conditions for the people there, it's not going to happen by isolating them. - Dudeee, on 02/22/2008, -0/+5please wake up to reality America needs you.
- theworldisflat, on 02/22/2008, -2/+7You have the IQ of a rodent...just so we're clear.
- jkoke, on 02/22/2008, -2/+7... negotiations have preconditions on YOU!
- ZiggityZhang, on 02/22/2008, -2/+7I'm not reading that.
- felixchapel, on 02/22/2008, -2/+7Tid bit... The US is Cuba's largest supplier of food since 2003.
- goomba323, on 02/22/2008, -1/+5As opposed to President Bush getting his orders from the sky-fairy he calls God? And of course we'll never convince them to convert to Christianity, hell, we probably won't convince them to convert to Democracy, but we can at least open up a dialogue and maybe get some better understanding of each others motivations and benefits that we can achieve by working together.
And it seems you could benefit from speaking with these leaders as they will inform you that there is no imaginary sky-fairy telling them to kill Americans. Idiot. - Totalchaos02, on 02/22/2008, -0/+4I think that will be the perfect debate line against McCain. Tell him the Reagan that he reveres so much had a direct line to Moscow and see how McCain backs away from that one.
