- kplo, on 07/20/2009, -3/+57Just get it over with and legalize it...
- dhVyse, on 07/20/2009, -2/+49Damn, I haven't had any green in a long time, but that thumbnail makes me with I had some nice sticky right about now.
And really, legalize it and tax it already. Was reading an article the other day that says just California alone would make 1.4 BILLION a year in taxes from the sale of marijuana.
And it's only illegal still because of the damn cotton and pharmaceutical industries constantly lobbying against it. - jboitnott, on 07/21/2009, -1/+23Hemp rope was just as strong as anything synthesized - but they decided to outlow that too - precisely because of the cotton, textile and pharmaceutical industries. Greed.
- TJ11240, on 07/21/2009, -1/+18Denver hasn't burned to the ground yet after decriminalizing. Oakland is making a very smart move, lets hope it passes. Keep the momentum up!
- gethane, on 07/21/2009, -2/+18This is absolutely insane. I'm all for legalizing and taxing pot. However, if we are going to maintain the illusion that legal marijuana use in California is "medical" (I do realize that in many cases it actually IS, but I know several borderline cases) then it seems unjust and cruel to "sin"tax medical patients.
Either make it legal, and tax it, like alcohol and cigarettes, or maintain the (much of the time) fiction that its "medical" and don't impose a sin tax on it. - novenator, on 07/21/2009, -2/+17the way of the future, good on ya Oakland!
- manguino, on 07/21/2009, -3/+18The dudes at Oaksterdam are leading the charge!

- TomTruelle, on 07/21/2009, -2/+9Your lighter is wearing pants, sir...
- Dodobutt222, on 07/21/2009, -2/+9Note that this is MEDICAL marijuana tax being increased....way to kick 'em (the ill) while they're down.
- Firstdaughter, on 07/21/2009, -4/+11Akchrs: I think you need to hang with us a little while and hot box... ;-)
- inactive, on 07/21/2009, -4/+10Some it hasn't managed to burn Massachusetts to the ground, despite what those police officers in the anti-legalization commercials said.
Funny that. - mHtt, on 07/21/2009, -3/+9Hotboxing, smoking marijuana or hashish in a small enclosed area, causing it to fill with smoke in order to maximize the effect.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hotboxing#Hot-boxing - alman783, on 07/21/2009, -2/+7Why tax pot?
If you eat cheeseburgers at McDonald's for a month the health effects are worse then smoking weed everyday for a month.
Wouldn't more money come out that?
Just legalize it don't tax it.
If the Government needs money so bad. Perhaps the should consider not spending like drunken sailors. - M4xMcLeod, on 07/21/2009, -2/+7I live in Ann Arbor, Michigan, a city that has practically decriminalized marijuana, and it's perfectly fine. Everyone isn't stupid and we aren't constantly sold out of Doritos. Let's just get it over with and decriminalize it everywhere.
- starmanfalls, on 07/21/2009, -2/+7We already know what you think *****. so shut up and go away. Akers is an anti pot troll. Digg away.
- elliotys, on 07/21/2009, -2/+7Last time I was broke I sold weed too.
- xenuxenuts, on 07/21/2009, -1/+5Dupont and nylon makes more sense than cotton.
- Metavised, on 07/21/2009, -3/+7Seconding the motion with a revision:
Article 1: akchrs should hang out and hot box
(1a) All other blatant trolls should also be given the opportunity.
(1b) Digg him and the others so that they aren't dissuaded or butthurt. - Metavised, on 07/21/2009, -2/+6Then it's decided; We should smoke copious amounts of cannabis, have relations with women eager for sexual intercourse, then die quite happily in a box.
- marx2k, on 07/21/2009, -2/+6akchrs, besides the flawed study you linked to, I'm sure people needing marijuana as a medicine are not that worried about nut cancer.
- podopie, on 07/21/2009, -1/+5http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CzkoeyhAAdk
- marcb83, on 07/21/2009, -2/+5they are already paying sales tax, so why would this be any different.
- DrunkenPirate34, on 07/21/2009, -2/+5MDMA harmless...?
- marcb83, on 07/21/2009, -3/+6Taxing the sick is not the cure to a city's budget problems.
- billraydrums, on 07/21/2009, -0/+3Might as well. Going to the dispensary is sooooooo convenient. Well worth the $150 doctor visit. And the dispensaries are just BEGGING to pay taxes. How often do you hear about that?
- IPrintAll, on 07/21/2009, -0/+3Being fat in America is fine. It shows everyone how affluent you are.
But get high and WHOA! you're out of control. /s - jarjarwang, on 07/21/2009, -2/+5What did you do last night? Oh, I typed mean things to imaginary drug users on the internet...
- Elranzer, on 07/21/2009, -1/+4"tax them, then arrest them."
Ronald Reagan would be proud. - evilesttoast, on 07/21/2009, -3/+6No, both cotton and pharmaceutical lobbyists.
- Frankyfan3, on 07/21/2009, -2/+5And READ YOUR OWN ***** ARTICLE:
"So before we can reach any firm conclusions about whether this is a cause-and-effect relationship, rather than a statistical blip, the result needs to be replicated in a much larger study." - Firstdaughter, on 07/21/2009, -2/+5Can I just interject that I was joking - sheeshh Akchrs "lighten" the ***** up. Just the mere fact that you looked up the term hotbox proves my point.
- elitedw, on 07/21/2009, -2/+4you haven't ever seen a cheap lighter have you.
- marcb83, on 07/21/2009, -1/+3this isn't about recreational pot. This is about medical pot being taxed more which is a tax on sick people. I would be fine with a local tax on recreational pot, but to tax sick people is just wrong.
- Frankyfan3, on 07/21/2009, -3/+5The multiple sclerosis patient I know that finds relief from cannabis in a way none of her other liver killing, kidney infecting, nausea inducing prescriptions ever did doesn't have testicles because she is a woman.
That study was also entirely made up of testicular cancer patients, and if we tried to apply that data to the general population of reported "frequent or long term male marijuana users" we would see TENS OF THOUSANDS of more testicular cancer cases each year than is currently reported. The only correlation you can actually make from the data is that there is a high number of men who end up with testicular cancer that had previously been frequent or long term marijuana users. Since there's a lot of male marijuana users, that's not to be unexpected.
The study does not show cause & effect. The headline is inaccurate.
Why you think it is any way supporting your assertion that doctors & patients should not be the ones to assess cost/benefit implications of treatment is beyond me.
Not to mention the terminally ill patients that find pain relief with a clearer mind than opiates provide... they would die anyways, is there any particular reason that you would prefer they not have access to the medicine their doctors & they have found to be the most effective and relieving palliative substance for their condition? - jman583, on 07/21/2009, -1/+3What about Cleveland?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oZzgAjjuqZM - Frankyfan3, on 07/21/2009, -1/+3We shouldn't alleviate suffering because you don't like the medicine?
You are really something, man. Really something. - inactive, on 07/21/2009, -0/+2taxation is theft.
- jseres, on 07/21/2009, -2/+4Arrest them for what? They aren't doing anything illegal under their own state laws. The Federal Government has no place controlling what goes on in a specific state unless it crosses state borders. If you where a true conservative you would know and understand that.
- dhVyse, on 07/21/2009, -0/+2So is Florida.
- Carinix, on 07/23/2009, -0/+1The Attorney General said the DEA won't act unless it violates federal and state law, and on top of that the federal government shouldn't have any input on a state level on something like this anyway.
- Spacejack, on 07/21/2009, -1/+2I'm not so sure it's a smart move to introduce "special" taxes on medical supplies just because they happen to be pre-demonized.
- guestaccount, on 07/22/2009, -0/+1So vote.
- swamp916, on 07/21/2009, -2/+3If i could legally buy my weed in a dispensary without having to pretend im sick I would be willing to pay taxes on it just like other products. The government doesn't have to be evil all the time we could change the drug laws if we all want to. It would be less expensive because there is no risk, no black market. If we tax weed and show the conservatives that this could solve our budget problems maybe they will take it seriously.
- Spacejack, on 07/21/2009, -1/+2It's unjust to "sin tax" anyone. It's all just a cash grab that is supported by would-be societal engineers (AKA Mrs. Grundy). I agree about the cruel part though.
- Frankyfan3, on 07/21/2009, -1/+2My goodness, I believe you've got something there!
