- Napoleone, on 10/10/2007, -5/+190A cop involved in three shootings in only five years --two of which were fatal-- and the chief isn't questioning his account? Why aren't the State Police or FBI looking into this?
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -7/+172Digg may need a taser section.
- iBenzin, on 10/10/2007, -6/+100Well im going to tell my part to this story. I live in oakland and was coming back from berkeley from Zebras (locals know what it is) and was going through the childrens hospital (near where this incident occurred) i stop and watched. i did not see any gun whatsoever. this was a pretty young guy. its hard seeing a murder especially one by the OPD. this wouldnt be the first time i saw this officer abuse people before and seeing him again sickens me to the pit of my stomach.
- syroncoda, on 10/10/2007, -17/+78sick *****. he'll get off and go abck to work doing what he does best: enforcing the police state. still no rioting? still no standing up to the government who obviously isn't doing a good job? no. the united states is full of pussies.
- quaxon, on 10/10/2007, -9/+66not to mention this ***** pig is shooting teenagers.
- down4twenty, on 10/10/2007, -1/+45"They can't kick you off the Force, it's not fair."
"l know. Life isn't always fair.Just think, the next time l shoot someone, l could be arrested." - Comatose51, on 10/10/2007, -2/+39WTF? I knew a retired NYC cop who served for well over 10 years maybe even 20 years during the 80s and 90. He has NEVER ever shot anyone. Shooting one person is unusual for a cop. Shooting two should raise questions. Three is unbelievable.
- Metalmoon, on 10/10/2007, -3/+40shooting someone in the back = self defense?
so the cop tasered the hell out of someone and in the process wasn't able to disarm them?
sounds to me like the gun was planted after the fact... - JEWestbrookJR, on 10/10/2007, -11/+42Don't bury me, bro!
- Ghoztt, on 10/10/2007, -7/+36"....they came first for the Communists, And I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a Communist;
And then they came for the trade unionists, And I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a trade unionist;
And then they came for the Jews, And I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a Jew;
And then . . . they came for me . . . And by that time there was no one left to speak up." - SoulRebel23, on 10/10/2007, -5/+34It's sick that this pig's supervisors turned a blind eye after he shot two people before, and took the life of one. Even after that, he was paid with tax dollars and provided a gun by the state, which he used to murder another. How long are we gonna take this *****.
- xjeffx, on 10/10/2007, -2/+30My brother was arrested after OD'ing. He was in his bedroom, practically dead, for several hours while the cops decided to bust in or not. Eventually they did, found that the reason he never came out was because he had OD'd, and they tasered him. He later flat lined at the hospital.
Now tell me, why would you need to taser somebody who was so close to death his heart stopped less than an hour later?
Cops are taser happy I've come to find out.
Now, to be honest, I have a great respect for the police. It just seems that they, like many human beings, have a huge problem with admitting when they are wrong. - carterbaldwin, on 10/10/2007, -8/+35I wonder how this man sleeps at night, having murdered two and ruined the life of a teenager?
- wrekd, on 10/10/2007, -0/+26Most police cars have dash cameras. Maybe its time for pistol cameras.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -3/+26Sgt. Patrick J. Gonzales Sr. has history of abuse just google Officer "Patrick Gonzales" Oakland or Officer "Pat Gonzales" Oakland.
From October 8, 2003:
"Piazza said that Officer Gonzales next turned to the front of Piazza's body and 'lifted and was looking under my sacks and stuff.' Piazza confirmed that what he meant was that the officer lifted and felt around under his testicles." The groping, according to Piazza, occurred on the corner of East 23rd Avenue and East 20th Street, at 6:30 on a spring evening as at least one AC Transit bus drove by.
During the search, Piazza asked the officer if he was "fruity." Shortly thereafter, Gonzales reportedly smacked him in the face, dislocating his jaw. Docs in Highland Hospital had to put it back in place. The photos of Piazza taken in the ER aren't pretty.
Despite the photographic proof, charges against the cop were eventually dropped because of a lack of corroborating witnesses – it was Piazza's word versus that of the cops. Talking to investigators, Gonzales and Sansome insisted they didn't strip search or strike the young man.
http://www.sfbg.com/38/02/news_riders.html - carterbaldwin, on 10/10/2007, -8/+28There's no rioting because bitching about it on Digg is so much easier. You're living proof.
I'm outraged too, but saying that we should overthrow the government every time you're outraged is stupid. - onyxrev, on 10/10/2007, -2/+21Reliable source: http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2 ...
COP's account disputed: http://sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2007/ ... - diggduggjoe, on 10/10/2007, -3/+21What if, a serial killer joined the force in order to have the opportunity to murder people and be exonerated. This guy seems to eager to finish off those he encounters in the process of doing his job. It, obviously, needs some scrutiny.
- liquidhalcyon, on 10/10/2007, -2/+17We need to riot, Cause I need a new TV.
- tonyfx, on 10/10/2007, -6/+20This stuff has traditionally happened to minorities for years. Now that blonde women are starting to get tasered and beaten, the media is starting to show a bit more attention to the idea of police brutality. The thing I don't understand from a lot of Digg commenter's (though less so on this thread) is that a lot of people think that the police are doing the right thing, and if "you just shut up, and do what you're told" you won't get attacked. They feel that cops are justified to feel and behave mightier than the rest of us. Ahh, so much more of this is coming.
- gn0stik, on 10/10/2007, -1/+14Did it go down exactly like the article said? He just let him go, then shot him in the back?
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+13Digg could certainly use a police brutality section.
- Alex2, on 10/10/2007, -2/+13http://news.google.ca/news?hl=en&ned=ca&q=Sergeant ... 30 news reports.
Maybe your next user name will be 'banned thrice' - slgraycols, on 10/10/2007, -4/+15Maybe one day we'll be like Burma
- onewingedangel9, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11I wish they wouldn't report stories like this until after they get the facts. Did he have a gun? Did he attempt to pull it? If there was no gun at all, then Gonzalez sure will be in hot water.
- intense321, on 10/10/2007, -3/+13You were there? Holy *****.
- Jabertsohn, on 10/10/2007, -2/+12Police Brutality is a very real problem... but it is mostly isolated cases. It has nothing to do with a corrupt government or any other conspiracy theories you have. Do not belittle the problem by blaming it on the Government, blame it on the single corrupt cop.
- twinklyJesus, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9Did you feel that? It was a sarcasm 2x4 hitting you in the head.
- Yez70, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9If more people stood up to the politicians, this would not be a police state.
- izallgood, on 10/10/2007, -8/+16But Assistant Police Chief Howard Jordan said a preliminary investigation into the incident indicates that Gonzalez didn't engage in any misconduct and in fact acted "in defense of his life" in shooting at Gary King, whom he said was armed with a handgun.
King "was still attempting to pull his firearm out," Joyner said.
If you pull a gun on a cop your going to get shot. I feel sorry for the kid, his family and cop. Most cops I know never want to use deadly force - subterfuge, on 10/10/2007, -5/+13"if you don't want to get shot it's probably better not to carry a gun"
i believe it's not only legal, but CONSTITUTIONAL for someone to carry a gun - topace3000, on 10/10/2007, -2/+10Have fun with that.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9The only real defense citizens have against cops is to be a faster shot.
- twinklyJesus, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9California doesn't have "State Police." And as to why the FBI isn't involved, There's not enough room on this page to explain other than, they can only get involved if certain parameters are met. This will be handled internally, locally. if that is questionable, the state will investigate. If that is not resolved effectively, the DOJ can step in and order an investigation. I don't believe the FBI would get involved unless jurisdiction crossed into another state. More than likely, US Marshals would be next.
- Abatrour, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8How could he have a pistol? The article said he was stripped multiple times.
- TabControl, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8This should be investigated by the Oakland Sheriffs department, not the state police. California's state police merged with the California Highway Patrol. 1 shooting during a 30 year career of an officer is entirely possible. Getting into 2 shootings in 30 years is a little unusual, but still possible. Getting into 3 shootings in 30 years is VERY unlucky. But getting into 3 shootings in 5 years? Sounds to me like that officer is scared and shouldn't do the job and the case should be investigated. But let's not get all riled up and start calling all cops pigs, and go all crazy.
- spyd3rweb, on 10/10/2007, -4/+12probably sleeps pretty good because he doesnt give a ***** about human life.
- tehpwnrate, on 10/10/2007, -3/+10Especially since the man was shot in the back. If I recall correctly, police are not allowed to shoot weapons at unarmed people who are fleeing.

Identical reports, all from "real news articles" and including eye-witness quotes. - Jabertsohn, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8How do you know this guy was innocent?
I am not saying he was guilty, but to claim he is innocent right off the bat like that is very short sighted. - MellerTime, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7Well, at least wait and shoot him in the side... Besides, it says all the eye witnesses claim he never tried to pull a weapon. Do we believe a single police officer who's trying to save his own ass, or a mob of citizens who were just standing by watching it unfold and have nothing to gain by lying?
- tonycomputerguy, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7I've never been more relieved that I'm white, and disgusted that I'm an American.
- jasoninoakland, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7This was NOT a particularly bad part of Oakland (near Children's Hospital, under the 24). Plus the guy was shot after he was tazed several times (and presumably any weapon he might have had was removed).
I don't know any of the particulars beyond what any of us has access to from the news, but it sounds a bit fishy reading the events as they've been described. - izallgood, on 10/10/2007, -4/+10Most cops on the street are honest and out there putting their life on the line to protect us everyday. That being said there are some bad cops out there, it is a way of life. The dirty cops need to at least be kicked off the force, to put them in jail and throw away the key. This cop has used his weapon more then average, however this could be a symptom of his assignment and not corruption. There should be an investigation by an independent agency. If they were all clean sucks to be him for having to shot so many people, but at least they are justified. If the investigation turns up that he has abused his power turn over the case to the DA. Let’s not crucify the guy till there has been an investigation by the county sheriff or the state police.
As long has he followed the book in stopping the kid, and the kid had a gun that he appeared to be reaching for, it will be considered justified. - EarlOfLade, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7I have no idea what the article is about since the web site was totally unreadable due to colors that made me claw my eyes out.
- drevin, on 10/10/2007, -8/+14A black guy nicked named "g-money" carrying a gun got shot by a cop?Really?
- Gailin, on 10/10/2007, -3/+9So remember folks, if you ever run from the cops, according to twinklyJesus, you deserve to die.
