followed by:
"Have you ever read lord of the rings, or are their too many big words?"
It's funny for multiple reasons. How can you accuse someone of name calling and then engage in the same behavior yourself two sentences later? How can you accuse someone of being too stupid to read Lord of the Rings in a sentence which, despite its simplicity, has multiple grammatical mistakes? I know posts are often written quickly and that grammatical mistakes happen, but I'd be more careful about proofreading before you insult someone else's intelligence.
In response to your earlier post, the rules about how one becomes a Muslim and what happens to Muslims who leave Islam are meaningful only to those who consider themselves subject to Islamic law. My mother is Jewish, and hence Jews would consider me to be as well. However, I certainly have freedom of choice in that regard and can reject the Jewish faith. So too can people born to Muslim fathers. - Coven, on 07/23/2008, -0/+8Dear Mr. Chapman,
You haven't read too deeply into my posts if your conclusion is that all I've done is called names and make guesses. Sure I've been a little naughty tonight, but my name calling is tame compared to what the majority of people in these comments have said about Senator Obama.
I read large swaths of the Torah during my years in Hebrew school. I have never read much of the New Testament directly, but I know many of the stories therein, and have had many Christian friends so I have had many opportunities to attend mass. I am not ignorant of the Christian faith.
I try to research what I post about before I make my comments if I am not familiar with the subject matter. Again, you aren't reading my posts very well if you are accusing me of not knowing what I am talking about
I indeed read Lord of the Rings. I only read Fellowship, though. I enjoyed it enough to finish it, but not enough to complete the series. I was too into Clarke, Card and Asimov to stray from sci fi for long. I got the rest of the story from the movies, which, as I understand, did not do the books justice, but managed to convey the story well enough that I did not need to complete the series.
"Better to be thought a fool and remain silent that to open your mouth and remove all doubt."

"Tolkien based his writing on Christianity - bad choice for a comeback on your part."

Read your own reply. The Torah is only five books. If you were any kind of student you could read it all, in Hebrew, in less than a week.
Forgive me, but going to mass doesn't do anything to teach you about the Christian faith. If you sincerely want to learn read Paul's letter to the Romans.
Please enlighten me, tell me the most important FACT about Christianity and I will concede. Got the answer?
Guessing isn't good enough. I normally don't get into these frays because the poor morons like you really think you are writing something cogent.
Stay away from Asimov if you are going to try to turn it into theology, and Alinsky and his Rules for Radicals that teach you should call names when you cannot debate on facts.
Read ALL of what Moses wrote. In these precious books are not stories, but G-d revealing himself in true and irrefutable history.
Best regards to your continued study. - Coven, on 07/24/2008, -1/+5As Hebrew is not a language I readily understand, I cannot read it in less than a week. It took me a few years to be able to read it well enough in the original hebrew to comprehend what I was reading. I was younger than 13 then. The Torah is a third of the 'hebrew bible'.
I honestly don't want to go any deeper into christianity than what I already know. I explored many faiths and rejected them all over the course of my life. This also means I don't know what your so called "fact" is about Christianity. In all honesty, the only fact I can admit of any faith is that they are all conceived by man to explain that which could not be explained.
Who said anything about turning Asimov into mythology? You really didn't understand what I wrote if you are making that assumption. I brought authors like Asimov into this to demonstrate that your bible is no more true than the Three Laws of Robotics. Both are fictional constructs, developed in the minds of men. The key difference is, I did not choose to live my life based on the fictional stories I enjoy reading. - kayala, on 07/25/2008, -1/+1I'm impressed with this Christian "patriot's" ability to pay attention. Tolkien was not too fond of the Christians; in my copy of The Silmarillion, there is a letter before the story begins, to explain why Tolkien wrote the story. He did so because he felt his country did not have a mythological history like Rome or Greece did, and in explaining his motivations, he got in some spectacular digs at the Christians who would try to claim his works as religious. If you'd pull your head out of your ass once in a while, you might learn a thing or two and stop making yourself look so stupid.

Patriotism means a great deal to many Americans. It is the driving force of who we are. It is a reminder of our greatness and the sacrifices our fathers made to make this a great nation. There is absolutely nothing wrong with being suspect when a man or a woman wants to be the head leader of this country and deliberately strays from tradition solely to apply own set of beliefs however contradictory they may be to our American traditions.
You call us "clowns" in a feeble attempt to make yourself look intelligent, but in reality it makes you look very childish and foolish.

THERE is a fad that springs up now and then in America of considering it fashionable to deplore our flag as just a symbol. Well, that's absolutely right. It is a symbol. The only fault that I can find with the pseudointellectuals who therefore discount it is that they live by symbols and apparently aren't even aware of it.
I would like to ask them a few questions. For example, why do they stop their cars when they see a red light at an intersection? It's just a symbol. The answer is obvious. The least unpleasant thing that could result from doing otherwise would be for a patrolman to give them a ticket. The God awful end result could be a screeching, tearing, rendering crash that might end with life ebbing cruelly from broken bodies. It's just a symbol, that red light, but it's wiser to pay attention to that symbol, now isn't it?
A driver going down a steep mountain road might look up to see a sign posted with lines on it depicting a dangerous curve ahead. Does that driver slow to take that curve? You bet he does. He pays attention to that symbol because it could mean life or death to him if he doesn't.
To go a step further, let's concentrate on a single dot called a period. It's always important but it can become explosive. If you should promise to pay a man $500 a week on a written contract and your secretary puts the dot in the wrong place, it could be disastrous for either party providing that they signed on the dotted line.
Think then of the symbol we call "Old Glory." It came into being by an enactment of the fifteenth Congress in 1818. Rather than go into the purely physical aspects of our flag, I will try to point out what each segment of it means in heraldry and apply it to real life situations.
Red is generally accepted to denote hardiness and valor. Washington's troops at Valley Forge surely lived up to that description just as surely as did Jedadiah Smith and Joseph Walker when they penetrated the vast mountain ranges of the West and so did the people who followed. Acts of great courage are heavily pronounced in the annals of America and they most certainly didn't always take place on the field of battle. Yet, because of the fact that World War II, the Korean War and the war in Vietnam are fresh in the minds of America, there is scarcely an American who somehow, somewhere, is not acquainted with a person who once again had proved American mettle under great stress.
Remember the symbol. The red stripes on our flag represent all of America. They represent us from the dreadful winter at Valley Forge to the present and into the future. America, that is all of us, experts courage and valor from one another. It is a proud symbol and one that future generations will revere.
The white stripes in actuality represent purity and innocence. Surely the symbolism of this isn't lost on us. Despite the very real problems created by our human natures, our massive goal has always been the pursuit of justice, equality and personal happiness. To this end the often ponderous wheels of American jurisprudence seek our every avenue of truth and the American people have often asked openly if the expenditures of millions of dollars to prosecute a test case is worth the money. Emphatically yes. The search is for all of us and since those white stripes are gazed upon by millions of Americans every day, let them remember that they symbolize our constant trust to guard truth and justice vigilantly. Truth and justice that seek to be a shield for every American to carry into his daily life. A symbol? Yes, but a powerful, moving force in the constant drive toward a better world.
In the upper left-hand corner, there is a block of blue emblazoned with fifty white stars. Technically it is called the Union; it symbolized the union of two or more peoples, incorporating their ideas and districts. Let's look at it from its real standpoint and realize that each one of those stars represents millions of Americans and that somewhere in those millions is the name you answer to.
No need to pick out a single star and say, "Hey, that's for me." Those stars represent all fifty states collectively and our founders did this with a stroke of genius. For our Union does unite two or more peoples or districts. It unites fifty districts and over two hundred million people. When you stand up and salute our flag or fly it from your home, your boat or your place of business, you are saying, "I'm grateful to be a member of that biggest Union of all, the United States of America." The color blue represents vigilance and perseverance and most certainly since revolutionary days we have epitomized those words.
So in bundling it all together we have a symbol, a symbol that for two hundred years has signified honor, valor, justice, responsibility, perseverance, hardiness and commonweal. That symbol has been the banner that millions of Americans have marched and sailed and flown with int the maws of death. They have been proud of that symbol and in turn it has slowly and patiently nurtured their common good to the extent that America stands head and shoulders over most of the world.
Yes, face the flag. It is most emphatically your flag. It has been at Iwo-jima, at the Maine, it has flown against the enemy in the Coral Sea and soared high in the sky above Nazi guns. Yet, it flies peacefully above every court house in the nation and stands quietly at Arlington. It is your flag, the symbol of unity, strength and honor toward you and toward your fellow Americans. Yes, face the flag, and to thank God it's still there.

What's happened to the American spirit of independence, self-reliance and individual achievement?
Marxist Barry Obama and other elitists push "community service" and "volunteerism" as something "we" should all aspire to do: selfless dedication for the "common good" - one of Hillary's favorites. These fanatics deliberately flog the American people with the same big lie that America is a democracy. A major goal for communist domination - besides eliminating God from the American landscape - is the destruction of the nuclear family. Americans spout "our democracy" without understanding how evil democracy is and should be rejected by anyone who cherishes freedom. America is a Republic, big difference.
U.S. War Department, November 30,1928, setting forth exact and truthful definitions of a Democracy and of a Republic, explaining the difference between both. These definitions were published by the authority of the United States Government and must be accepted as authentic in any court of proper jurisdiction. These precise and scholarly definitions of a Democracy and a Republic were carefully considered as a proper guide for U.S. soldiers and U.S. citizens by the Chief of Staff of the United States Army.
CITIZENSHIP Democracy:
A government of the masses. Authority derived through mass meeting or any other form of "direct" expression. Results in mobocracy. Attitude toward property is communistic--negating property rights. Attitude toward law is that the will of the majority shall regulate, whether is be based upon deliberation or governed by passion, prejudice, and impulse, without restraint or regard to consequences. Results in demogogism, license, agitation, discontent, anarchy
CITIZENSHIP Republic:
Authority is derived through the election by the people of public officials best fitted to represent them. Attitude toward law is the administration of justice in accord with fixed principles and established evidence, with a strict regard to consequences. A greater number of citizens and extent of territory may be brought within its compass. Avoids the dangerous extreme of either tyranny or mobocracy. Results in statesmanship, liberty, reason, justice, contentment, and progress. Is the "standard form" of government throughout the world. A republic is a form of government under a constitution which provides for the election of
(1) an executive and (2) a legislative body, who working together in a representative capacity, have all the power of appointment, all power of legislation, all power to raise revenue and appropriate expenditures, and are required to create (3) a judiciary to pass upon the justice and legality of their government acts and to recognize (4) certain inherent individual rights.
Take away any one or more of those four elements and you are drifting into autocracy. Add one or more to those four elements and you are drifting into democracy.
Atwood. Superior to all others.--Autocracy declares the divine right of kings; its authority can not be questioned; its powers are arbitrarily or unjustly administered. Democracy is the "direct" rule of the people and has been repeatedly tried without success. Our Constitutional fathers, familiar with the strength and weakness of both autocracy and democracy, with fixed principles definitely in mind, defined a representative republican form of government. They "made a very marked distinction between a republic and a democracy * * * and said repeatedly and emphatically that they had founded a republic."- ThoughtfulWi, on 07/22/2008, -3/+4Where's the oxymoron?

- dragonfire417, on 07/22/2008, -11/+10For Coven:
I spent 4 years in a liberal arts university and I am now a teacher. I had come from a family of democrats and knew nothing else at the time. I was taught to hate Republicans, Reagan, the military and anything patriotic. Patriotic people were looked down upon as a bunch of uneducated followers. Several years later, my family and I drove to Canada to see Niagara Falls. This was the first time I had left the United States. (Teachers do not make enough money to travel abroad and raise a family properly.) I have nothing against Canada, but all of the signs with crowns and the queen on the coins… it made me appreciate our symbol of the bald eagle – it wears no crown. I have to say, I came home to the United States with a new understanding of patriotism. I live in the United States and I am proud to be a citizen of this great country. I decided at that moment that I would never again hide my patriotism. I came home and played Lee Greenwood’s Proud to be an American, and decided that there is nothing wrong with being a proud American. We are hard working people and we do care about others. (I have written a short paper about capitalism, if you wish to see it, let me know.)
When the events of 9-11-01 took place in New York, I saw a mass demonstration of American pride and people pulling together. (This happens naturally at a time of tragedy. Think of families you have known who have had tragic events in their lives. Many of them become closer.) This pulling together and displaying national pride is natural, healthy and by all means necessary. If we do not pull together, we will fall apart, just like those families who do break up after tragedy.
Do you love the United States of America? It may not be perfect, but it is the best place on Earth to live in my opinion. Just like in a broken families, the members that do not want the family name anymore leave. They don’t tell their families to throw away their customs and heritage and follow a new lifestyle in the current family home. They find someplace else to start their lives.
If the United States is to survive, we need to know our history, appreciate the sacrifices of our military, past and present, and elect LEADERS, who will lead us with nationalistic pride, a desire to fix what is broken and the ability to know what to preserve. (We don’t need motivational rock stars, who want to lead this country on personal “feel good” missions. We don’t need leaders who hold raffles for their constituency to be able to talk to them.)
If you are a United States citizen, be thankful and proud.
If you don’t like it here, go someplace else. There is nothing more irritating than a bunch of whiners saying they don’t like a place, but stay there anyway and complain. If you don’t like the store, the restaurant, the neighborhood, the country, do something about it, leave and find like-minded people to be around.
Our flag is our symbol of patriotic pride. Everyone in our country should display it with pride and respect, especially our leaders. If a person is ashamed of our flag, he doesn’t respect what it stands for, and possibly wishes to CHANGE what it stands for.
Well, this here is one United States American who will not stand silently and let anyone CHANGE what my country is about.
I am and will always be a proud United States American. God Bless America!
Sometimes, Coven, a song, a poem or a speech really hits home, and is okay to share with others. But, in case you really needed to know, I do think on my own and speak my own patriotic words as well.- Coven, on 07/22/2008, -3/+8Now you're getting it!
There is absolutely nothing wrong with patriotism, pride in your country. There is nothing wrong with loving your country. There is also nothing wrong with having issues with the direction this great nation is being taken. Unprovoked wars of aggression. Ignorance in the sciences. Destruction of the middle class. The list goes on. I love my country greatly, but I hate what the current government in power is doing to her. THAT is patriotism. Seeing tyranny and knowing when to say "Enough!".
You say you want nationalistic leaders. I say you have to be careful what you wish for. Nationalism is taking patriotism too far. It is saying "Us and ONLY us! ***** everybody else!". Nationalism is a dangerous tool that has been wielded in the past by this worlds' most evil men.
Not displaying the flag and being ashamed of said flag are two completely different things. I don't fly the flag outside my home, I don't wear a lapel pin, i don't have a little plastic flag flying on my car. I DO stand up and remove my hat out of pride and respect during the Star Spangled Banner. I DO recite my Pledge of Allegiance, even though I may skip the "under god" part. I gladly pay my fair share in taxes every year, and every single year I make my way to the public school a few blocks away and cast my ballot for whichever politician I see most fit to lead me and my community.
We all show our patriotism in our own ways. Some choose to flaunt it, as though it needs to be thrown in the world's face. I choose otherwise.
Thank you for actually sitting down and taking the time to give us your own words.- newinnewark, on 07/22/2008, -7/+2You are such a ***** idiot.

Second:
Unprovoked??? Every day, EVERY day, the United States receives threats from many places around the globe. We must defend ourselves. We cannot defend ourselves if we disarm our citizens and military. We must stand together and protect what we have.
Third: "Not displaying the flag and being ashamed of said flag are two completely different things." - i respectfully disagree.
Remember High School or College, did you wear your school's colors? Why? School Pride? I often see the school who just won a big game displaying school colors. The losing team has many fewer people wearing their colors. Why? Same with professional sports. People wear team colors when they are proud of a team. (or country)
Did you agree with everything your school did? Who was chosen as class president? Did (s)he refuse to wear the school colors and say that her/his school spirit is on the inside? Who was the football team captain? Why was he chosen to lead?
Next: "Ignorance in the sciences." You may have won this one, we have to claim Al Gore.
Finally: Why am I not surprised that you skip the "under God," part of the pledge. No humility for Coven I guess. - anstice85, on 07/22/2008, -3/+7Telling someone that they'd do better by being less self righteous and condescending is, in itself, self righteous and condescending, and thus hypocritical. - dragonfire417, on 07/22/2008, -4/+3Anstice85, I did not say that he was self-righteous and condescending, but that the tone of his writing is such, and that his argument would be more effective if it sounded more reasonable and respectful. As a teacher, I tend to evaluate as I read, and offer advice for improving presentation.
- Coven, on 07/22/2008, -4/+8I come off as condescending, self-righteous and arrogant because I have to respond to the condescending, self-righteous and arrogant posts of you and your kin in the religious right. If you can't stand the heat...
Unprovoked, yes. Iraq was no threat to the United States. To claim otherwise shows severe lack of comprehension in foreign affairs. Nobody is calling for the disarmament of our military. Obama wants to continue the fight in Afghanistan! How the hell does that equate to disarming our military. Second amendment issues aside (one of the few points I disagree with Obama on, but the SCOTUS fixed that problem nicely), Obama is my candidate of choice to lead our military.
I do remember high school. I do remember wearing our colors and cheering on our teams. I also remember it not being thrown in my face when I didn't. Sad, high school kids had more common sense than your day to day nationalistic "patriot".
Ignorance in the sciences: Discovery Institute. The religious right wins this one hands down.
I skip "under god" because I have no belief in a deity. I can be humble yet retain no religious leanings.
- eir574, on 07/22/2008, -1/+8"Remember High School or College, did you wear your school's colors? Why? School Pride?"
I had great pride in my school back when I was in high school and college, and I still do. I went to a public high school that's ranked as one of the best in the country. Though my college was small and relatively unknown, friends of mine who went to Harvard, Yale, Stanford, etc., are jealous of the education I received there. Both schools set me up to succeed in life, and I donate to them every year (despite the fact that I'm still paying for my college education) because I want so very much for people I'll never meet to have the same opportunities I've had. That's in part an expression of pride.
But, I never put much thought into wearing school colors. That doesn't mean that I felt that pride any less strongly than those who did. Why do you believe that one's pride in an institution must be worn on one's sleeve? It's a serious question and I don't mean it at all condescendingly or sarcastically. I think this is one of those issues that introduces divisions into our country. Patriotism means different things to different people and is exhibited in different ways. Why would you want to make enemies out of people who at least share that underlying patriotism with you? If nothing else, it's common ground that people on multiple sides of a political issue often have. Unfortunately, it's often the first thing that gets attacked, and then suddenly we're talking about meaningless things instead of actual issues, and we're worse off for it, perhaps by a great margin. - Coven, on 07/23/2008, -2/+5Ah, yes...I forgot about the alumni association at my *public* college (ooo, that liberal indoctrination center!). They call me once a year. Once a year I give them 20 bucks. Its not a whole lot, and I generally specify that it should go to the one scholarship (Edith Wilke Memorial Scholarship) I received when I was a student, but I help wherever I can. Once I pay off my loans I'll up my donation significantly. Should I ever strike it rich, I hope they'll name a wing of their performing arts building for me after my whopper of a donation goes through :) If not a wing, then maybe a dorm, so college kids can get it on inside my namesake for decades to come!

You also are a person who has the ability to easily anger people by your rhetoric. But you also live in a country that protects your right to be just who you are. Others of us are outraged by Obama's very liberal anti-American, anti-Christian, anti-family, anti-military, anti-Bush/McCain attitudes. His presentation of himself to the world with his own "logo" instead of the American flag is regretable. Is he or is he not a candidate for the presidency of the United States of America? He is arrogant, glib, foolish and obviously power hungry. He is certainly not the "Messiah" some claim him to be. If anything, he is satanic. There is a greater force behind him than meets the eye, but it is certainly not from God. Incidentally, "Coven" sounds a lot like a Wiccan word.
- Coven, on 07/22/2008, -3/+9I've already stated previously, Coven is my surname.
I've also stated previously, that shoe leather probably doesn't taste all that good. Can you fill me in on it?
If you are going to invoke your god in an argument, you better be arguing with somebody who believes in said god. Otherwise your argument does not tread water very well.
Claiming that Obama is "anti" a bunch of stuff actually doesn't help you much either. Him being anti-Bush/McCain attitudes is a GOOD thing. You can't prove that he is anti-American, especially since his political activities say very much otherwise. You can't call him anti-Christian as he's been a church-goer for at least the past 20 years. Him being a Christian is actually a down point for me. I prefer my politicians to have completely clear minds, unclouded by fairy tales. "Anti-family" is baseless. Are you implying that his stance on a woman's reproductive choice equates to somehow wanting nobody to have families anymore? I don't see him trying to outlaw procreation. Anti-military is a laugh, as he is very much pro-military action. He just knows where the right front is in this so called 'War on Terror'. Bush had the right idea too prior to 2003. Get out of Iraq, get some more troops back into Afghanistan and finish the job there. Even the Iraqis are fed up with out presence there and want us out!
Let me ask you this: If he is so anti-american, why are the colors of his logo...get this...RED WHITE AND BLUE. - DuggDowner, on 07/22/2008, -3/+7The only people who compare Obama and the Messiah are rightwing nutjobs like you downsyndrome.
- trogdoor, on 07/23/2008, -1/+7I like how you criticize Obama for being anti-McCain AND being "anti-family".
Because McCain is such a good example with the divorce and all.
It seems most McCain supporters have backed away from the whole "Family Values" shtick that Republicans usually rally behind because they realize how hypocritical it would be, you should follow their example.

Stop patronizing, denegrating, and condescendingly insulting me , I am not a helpless victim and you are not my savior. I dont want to be billed for more "pursuit of happiness" schemes..or pay into for more "assured outcome" programs or wasted money for armies of youth trying to be helpful...its unnecessary ungodly and unconstitutional.
My father taught me to stand on my own two feet, be responsible for my actions..even if they hurt my self-esteem and my finances and socially set me back, just quietly and patiently endure, persevere and try again...he taught me to blame no one for my failures, he said life would be a struggle and that they are life lessons from God to make me a more humble and stronger man and family leader, he told me I dont need to keep up with the Joneses...he taught me to mind my own business and not push myself on others. He told me I will be given the opportunity to help others without pandering for attention and beaming with self-righteousness and not to feel guilty for poor people or go out of my way to meddle in their lives...they always make do, and most if them enjoy life on their own level just as we did on our lower middle class level, rich or poor..respect everyone the same way, treat my neighbor as I would want to be treated.....my father taught me to work hard for what i want, longer hours, 2 jobs and be thrifty, and don.t go looking for handouts because those handouts cost somebody somewhere, hard- earned money. He taught me to trust in the Lord and He will meet my daily needs....not necessarily my wants. Open-ended Iraq occupation must end: no military solution. (Apr 2007)
Not too optimistic either:
No good options in Iraq--just bad options & worse options. (Aug 2007
These are not words of a true Leader.
3. “Iraq was no threat to the United States”
Read this:
“ Iraq was a honey pot for arms sellers. It attracted governments, corporations, consultants and fixers. Their greed and Saddam Hussein's ability to lavish petrodollars on advanced weapons were a perfect match.
One hundred-ten German corporations sold materials and equipment for the production of weapons of mass destruction to Iraq, according to the Republican staff of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. British, Austrian, American and French corporations also figure prominently on the same list.
Hewlett-Packard, Honeywell, and Hughes Helicopters were among the American companies.
German companies helped Iraq develop its own chemical weapons industry. Iraq and Iran used poison gas against each other during their eight-year war. The Senate Foreign Relations Committee staff found evidence that Saddam Hussein used poison gas against Iraqi Kurds in 1988. Iranian TV filmed the aftermath.
Three years later, when Iraq was defeated in Desert Storm, the United Nations ordered the destruction of Iraqi chemical and nuclear weapons programs. In March 1993, the UN announced the elimination of 70 tons of Iraqi nerve gas and reported that the burning of 400 tons of mustard gas was progressing steadily.
The Iraqis began developing a nuclear weapons program in the 1970s. The Israelis bombed an Iraqi nuclear reactor in 1981. In the following years, the Iraqis became more secretive about their nuclear weapons program. American planes attacked Iraqi nuclear weapons facilities during Desert Storm.
After Desert Storm, special UN teams destroyed some of Iraq's nuclear weapons facilities under the terms of the cease-fire. But information about Iraq's foreign supply network has been hard to obtain from either Iraq or Western governments.
It was not only weapons of mass destruction that Saddam Hussein bought from suppliers around the globe. To equip the fourth largest armed force in the world, the Iraqi leader bought conventional weapons of all kinds.
He bought $20 billion worth of French arms, and went to suppliers as far away as China and Brazil.
As the Iran-Iraq war dragged on and money became scarcer...

4. “I do remember high school. I do remember wearing our colors and cheering on our teams…..”
Great, the point I was making was that people wear team colors when they are proud of a team.
It was made in response to your statement: “Not displaying the flag and being ashamed of said flag are two completely different things.”
The point is that when teams are victorious, people swell with pride and show their colors, but when a team loses, fewer people wear their colors.
There is nothing wrong with competition and cheering for your side. It’s hardly “in your face” to wear a flag pin. Every country celebrates their flag and national pride at the Olympics.

"Open-ended Iraq occupation must end: no military solution. (Apr 2007)

No good options in Iraq--just bad options & worse options. (Aug 2007"
He's right on both counts. This was a diplomatic problem from the start. Once we sent troops in it only made things worse.

"Pursue goal of a world without nuclear weapons. (Feb 2008)"
The problem with this is...? I have a gun, you do not. I want what you have so I tell you to give it to me. You say no, I shoot you. You hand over what you have, I win, and you have nothing.
Pursue a goal of a city without guns. Hmmm…. Chicago. Okay the criminals and those who want power will not give up their weapons.
Other countries promise to give up their nuclear weapons, we give up ours…. Then, when we have no nuclear deterrent, the mushroom cloud appears. That, my friend, is the problem I have with giving up our nuclear weapons.
“Nukes have no use in society.” Unfortunately, they are here, and they are a deterrent.

The Lugar-Obama initiative is modeled after the Nunn-Lugar program that focuses on weapons of mass destruction in the former Soviet Union.
WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senators Barack Obama (D-IL) and Richard Lugar (R-IN) today announced that the Senate Appropriations Committee accepted their request to provide funding to implement the Lugar-Obama nonproliferation initiative. The Appropriations Committee expressed support for the initiative and provided $48 million for Lugar-Obama, $36 million for programs to destroy heavy conventional weapons, $10 million for efforts to intercept weapons and materials of mass destruction, and $2 million for rapid response to proliferation detection and interdiction emergencies. This is the culmination of an 18 month effort to authorize and fund the Lugar-Obama initiative.

Voted NO on redeploying troops out of Iraq by July 2007.
Voting YEA on this amendment would establish a timetable for withdrawal from Iraq. Voting NAY would keep the current situation without a timetable. The amendment states:
The President shall redeploy, commencing in 2006, US forces from Iraq by July 1, 2007, leaving only the minimal number of forces that are critical to completing the mission of standing up Iraqi security forces and conducting specialized counterterrorism operations.
The President should maintain an over-the-horizon troop presence to prosecute the war on terror and protect regional security interests.
Within 30 days, the administration shall submit to Congress a report that sets forth the strategy for the redeployment of US forces from Iraq by July 1, 2007.
Opponents of the Resolution say:
This amendment would withdraw American forces from Iraq without regard to the real conditions on the ground.
The consequences of an American retreat would be terrible for the security of the American people at home.
Our commitment is not open-ended. It is conditional on the Iraqis moving toward self-government and self-defense.
Supporters of the Resolution say:
Congress talks almost incessantly about the situation in Iraq as if on 9/11 the situation involved Iraq. Of course, it didn't. We were attacked by al-Qaida operating out of Afghanistan on 9/11.
One of the theories we hear is that somehow staying in Iraq is necessary because all the terrorists will come into Iraq, and then they wouldn't be able to attack us anywhere else. Some call this the roach-motel theory. The fact is, al-Qaida is operating in 60 to 80 countries. Yet our resources are only heavily focused on this Iraq situation.
In terms of differences from other Iraq amendments: This is binding, not just a sense of the Senate.
Secondly, we have a date; other amendments are open-ended.
Thirdly, this has an over-the-horizon force specifically to protect our security interests.
Reference: Kerry Amendment to National Defense Authorization Act; Bill S.Amdt. 4442 to S. 2766 ; vote number 2006-181 on Jun 22, 2006
3. That doesn't refute my point that Iraq had no capability to attack the United States. They were not a threat. They did not attack us.
No one really knows for sure, as he was able to send weapons to Syria. Saddam tried for years to bring down our country, he also gassed his own people (kurds) and tried to take over Kuwait. There are physical and economic threats here.
4. [It IS in your face when people claim you lack patriotism for NOT wearing your flag on your sleeve.] - I respectfully disagree, I am simply stating that when people fail to demonstrate patriotism, by colors or a flag, they are revealing a dissatisfaction or disapproval. Maybe not in all cases, but in leadership, such as candidates for political offices, it is a statement. - Coven, on 07/23/2008, -1/+3In many cases, untrue, but as you can see in many posts above, it applies. Some of the most hateful diatribes I have ever read are uttered by the readers of WND posting right here on digg.
Can we both agree that the current administration has bungled the handling of Afghanistan badly and a new direction needs to be taken? Obama's criticism shows that he knows exactly what needs to be done to resolve the issue there.
Re: nuclear weapons. Yes it is idealistic and I highly doubt that this world will ever be rid of Oppenheimer's folly, but the best we can do is continue non-proliferation and maintain a policy of peaceful uses of nuclear technology. The fewer nuclear weapons on this world the better.
I agree on the stance that Obama is wrong about gun ownership. As I said previously, the SCOTUS solved the 2nd amendment issue sufficiently, so I don't see his stance as an issue to worry about.
Lugar-Obama is not about disarming the United States. From the link you posted:
“Materials of Mass Destruction.---The Committee supports sections 10-12 of Public Law 109-472 which strengthens U.S. efforts to interdict illicit shipments of weapons or materials of mass destruction and secure vulnerable stockpiles of conventional weapons. The Committee provides $48,059,000 to implement these programs, of which $10,000,000 is under Export Control and Related Border Security Assistance, $36,059,000 is under the Small Arms and Light Weapons Destruction program, and $2,000,000 is under the Nonproliferation and Disarmament Fund.”
This quote speaks about a black market in illegal weapons, not taking weapons out of the hands of our soldiers.
As for Iraq, what has been said in the past about redeployment is now irrelevant as the Iraqi government is calling for a timeline and withdrawal of coalition forces. It is no longer a matter for our government to decide. Iraq is a sovereign nation and has the right to tell foreign forces to get off their land.
Re: The 'threat' posed by Iraq. Saddam had no capability to direct an attack on US soil. the best he could do was lob scuds at Israel, who have proven time and time again that they are not a force to be reckoned with. Kuwait was a unique situation. The United Nations rightfully responded to Saddam's aggression by ejecting him from Kuwait. Bush Sr.'s administration was wise enough to end it at the Iraqi border, leaving Saddam practically defenseless. We controlled the skies over much of his country for the following decade. UN inspectors were on the ground regularly and Saddam was well into the process of destroying whatever aging stockpile he had left (most of which was supplied by the US in the 1980s) when the decision was made to invade. Most recently, the main economic threat Iraq posed was the decision to move towards selling oil in Euros, which Iran has been threatening to do as well.
I respectfully disagree with your final point. Why do I need to wear colors or display a flag to demonstrate my patriotism? If that is the method by which patriotism is measured, I can be the most patriotic person on the planet by flying hundreds of flags outside my home. Obama, in my eyes, has demonstrated his patriotism via his legislation. He has worked to make our country a better place for all citizens. Of course, this is my personal opinion and you have every right to feel differently about the legislation he has sponsored. The way I see it, putting the American people first is above and beyond any superficial display of patriotism involved with waving a flag or wearing a painted piece of metal.
It is rare that I enjoy a debate with a WND reader. Have a pleasant night.
- dragonfire417, on 07/23/2008, -1/+1It has been a pleasure to debate with you. The following are my final comments on the issues. You may have the last words.
- Coven, on 07/23/2008, -1/+4"--I speak my mind in a respectful manner, thank you very much."
- viejoverde, on 07/22/2008, -7/+5The american flag is to this communist what a cross is to a vampire. He can't wait to tear down our capitalist system brick by brick, which shouldn't be so hard considering the indoctrination new graduates get from the government schools and then the colleges.
- wethepeople1, on 07/23/2008, -6/+4This guy is SO RADICALLY SOCIALIST / AUTHORITARIAN that his logic & reason have been eclipsed.......what if he fly's over enemy territory without USA markings visible on the plane ?
- Teribssn, on 07/23/2008, -4/+2Hopefully he'll get shot down. I won't miss him!
- yellowcakewalk, on 07/23/2008, -6/+5Obama is just the obedient tool of corporations and AIPAC. He hates our Bill of Rights almost as much as Bush does, check out that FISA vote.
- sullly, on 07/23/2008, -6/+2I know that this"O" thing will lead to the masses dumping Obama for Senator McCain. He's got it in the bag now! Perhaps all the "conservatives" will now come out for McCain after pledging not to. If we vote for Senator McCain, AND we boycott McDonalds, everything will be rosy again.
- Christianptriot, on 07/23/2008, -7/+7IF obama really wants to see change in the US, and be the next US president, WHY does he NOT have the US flag on his airliner??
Who is paying for that airliner, as well - and the paint job?
If you are cheering for a team and want that team to support you, you wear THEIR colors - you do NOT make the team change to wear YOUR colors only. THAT is totalitarianism.
Obama is not for the US - he is for obama.- Coven, on 07/23/2008, -3/+5His logo contains the colors red, white and blue. He is wearing our colors.
- alkajazz, on 07/23/2008, -1/+6Oh shut up already.....
- danielttt, on 07/23/2008, -5/+1Here's an idea. I know this is a stretch but..Let's suppose, damn this is wild, but just suppose, the next time you write a one sentence response, you write something intelligent....I know you're a lemming and all but, I tend to dream big.

- flip2trip, on 07/23/2008, -8/+6The following words were spoken by the late Red Skelton on his television program as he related the story of his teacher, Mr. Laswell, who felt his students had come to think of the Pledge of Allegiance as merely something to recite in class each day.
"I've been listening to you boys and girls recite the Pledge of Allegiance all semester and it seems as though it is becoming monotonous to you. If I may, may I recite it and try to explain to you the meaning of each word?"
I -- me, an individual, a committee of one.
PLEDGE -- dedicate all of my worldly goods to give without self pity.
ALLEGIANCE -- my love and my devotion.
TO THE FLAG -- our standard, Old Glory, a symbol of freedom. Wherever she waves, there's respect because your loyalty has given her a dignity that shouts freedom is everybody's job!
UNITED -- that means that we have all come together.
STATES -- individual communities that have united into 48 great states. Forty-eight individual communities with pride and dignity and purpose; all divided with imaginary boundaries, yet united to a common purpose, and that's love for country.
AND TO THE REPUBLIC -- a state in which sovereign power is invested in representatives chosen by the people to govern. And government is the people and it's from the people to the leaders, not from the leaders to the people.
FOR WHICH IT STANDS, ONE NATION -- one nation, meaning "so blessed by God"
INDIVISIBLE -- incapable of being divided.
WITH LIBERTY -- which is freedom -- the right of power to live one's own life without threats, fear or some sort of retaliation.
AND JUSTICE -- the principle or quality of dealing fairly with others.
FOR ALL -- which means, boys and girls, it's as much your country as it is mine.
And now, boys and girls, let me hear you recite the Pledge of Allegiance:
"I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic, for which it stands; one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."
Since I was a small boy, two states have been added to our country and two words have been added to the Pledge of Allegiance...
UNDER GOD
Wouldn't it be a pity if someone said that is a prayer and that would be eliminated from schools too?
- Red Skelton- alkajazz, on 07/23/2008, -3/+3I really love digging down your long comments.
- flip2trip, on 07/25/2008, -0/+2It's ok, I'm used to the immaturity of diggers by now.
- alkajazz, on 07/23/2008, -3/+3I really love digging down your long comments.
- jb1965, on 07/23/2008, -9/+5No surprises here. No flag lapel pin. Not standing in a respectful manner for the pledge of allegiance. Th Che Guevara flag in one of his campaign offices. The altered Presidential Seal. And the liberal media and the Kool-Aid drinkers posting above just loving him!
- eir574, on 07/23/2008, -2/+11Patriotism is not measured soley by the size and number of flags one displays. We have enough that divides us in this country without criticizing each other based on whether we wear flag pins and on how or whether we display the flag.
- SOLGAARD, on 07/23/2008, -5/+2WOW, (U-GO DIGG-TROLLS).
47 DIGGS, and almost 200 comments- lol, Just goes to show-> - SydBloom, on 07/23/2008, -3/+1The cult of celebrity makes people think the Obamanation is a viable candidate. He is not. No experience. His legislation looks like the UN wrote it. (Including by the way a proposal by the Obamanation to DIRECTLY TAX US CITIZENS FOR THE UN.
- Joementum, on 07/23/2008, -1/+4Relax folks. There is a flag on his plane. http://embeds.files.wordpress.com/2008/07/img_3380 ...

- SydBloom, on 07/23/2008, -4/+1Removing the symbol of our nation is a deliberate signal to the world. It means that the Obamanation believes what most democrat liberal stalinists in America believe, that America is an evil nation and should be blamed for most of the ills in the world.
The generation of the 60's and 70's are self absorbed, cinical and rudderless. They are leading the democrat charge and have embraced all kinds of perverted and self destructive ideals because they are living in the vaccum created in humans when they stand for nothing of real value, lack basic decency and believe in only themselves. These are the leaders like Pelosi, Kerry, Boxer, Kennnedy, Schumer and Clinton et al.
Their worship of the cult of celebrity is further evidence of their lack of core human decency and ideals. Any shiney penny is a cause for new adolation and excitement. Of course they also turn into vicious hyenas the moment the shine is gone. Take a look at what they do to the likes of a Britney Spears or a Princess Diana or the current Obamanation. They
