http://digg.com/politics/Ex_Merrill_Lynch_exec_pay ... - Jazzzzz, on 12/31/2008, -4/+141I am sure a few pockets were lined with some of this money. Whose going to miss a million or two when your dealing with billions.
- Dumbledorito, on 01/01/2009, -3/+115It's truly amazing. My own finances have more government oversight than this so-called "bailout." And that whole BS line about how it shouldn't be transparent, because if we knew where the money was going, it would cause a lack of confidence in those getting the money, is ludicrous.
News flash: A lack of transparency and oversight is what CAUSED this whole financial ***** in the first place! They should not only require at least a daily record of all bailout payments and what they were used for, but banks should be required to have their assets and bookkeeping listed as public records so we could, oh, I don't know, see which ones have been playing video poker with derivatives and credit default swaps.
I personally don't see how my lack of confidence COULD get any lower, unless one of these ***** flew his private jet over my house on the way to a tax haven in the Caribbean while trailing a flag that read "SO LONG, SUCKERS!" - jboitnott, on 01/01/2009, -15/+78And GOD FORBID we should ever give a bailout to members of a union. Why -- they might spend it on health care or something. We should just continue to give our money to rich fat cats and President Bush's donors. (sarcasm)
- northwatuppa, on 01/01/2009, -3/+66fta: The officials also noted the "difficulties associated with monitoring the use of specific funds" provided to individual financial institutions, according to the document.
Same trouble they're having in Iraq. I guess the US has just lost the knack of effective regulation, among other things . . . like hurricane relief. - phlux, on 01/01/2009, -1/+60"Financial Stability Oversight Board. "

- Securitron, on 01/01/2009, -1/+27Either Barack whips this country into shape or I say we start a revolution.
- Dumbledorito, on 01/01/2009, -1/+24I'm guessing H&R Block would get a $300 billion bailout.
- killdashnine, on 01/01/2009, -1/+24Corrupt auto executive buyouts ... $X billion
Idiot bankers CEO buyouts ... $Y billion
US economy still flailing .... PRICELESS - twiztidsinz, on 01/01/2009, -2/+25No. That's more Corruption than anything (promising to help the poor while helping the rich).
Ignorant people take for granted that we are a fairly Socialist government. No type of government (Communist/Socialist/Capitalist/etc etc) is perfect. Everyone loves to say how great and wonderful Capitalism is because its "fair" and "You get what you work for"... which is great.... if you're a giant corporation and can undercut prices and have a large enough hold to shape the market. Otherwise, someone bigger just comes along and runs you into the ground.
Thankfully the United States maintains a mixed balance of Socialism and Capitalism as well as traits from other forms of government which attempts to take the best parts while minimizing the worst parts.
Do you like driving on that paved road?
SOCIALISM!!! (With Capitalism only drivers pay for the road increasing what you would would pay [currently called "taxes"] in order for the upkeep of the road).
Did you or your kids go to public school?
SOCIALISM!!! (With Capitalism you pay for all your schooling like Private schools, increasing the what you and/or your parents would pay [currently called "taxes"] in order to get and give you an education. But wait! Why should your parents pay for YOUR education? this is CAPITALISM! You get what you work for!! You dont pay for someone else's benefits!!!)
Ever borrow a book from the library?
SOCIALISM!!! (With Capitalism you would flat out buy that book you wanted to read. Why should YOU pay for someone else to have access to that book?) - Pinkertinkle, on 01/01/2009, -1/+23Let's jail the CEO's and redistribute their (our) money!
- GRANDPAMUNSTER, on 06/11/2009, -0/+22Just another shining example of how corrupt EVERY part of our government is.
- phlux, on 01/01/2009, -1/+22I am printing out this article and sending it in as my tax return:

This revolution needs a first step: conscientious objection - specifically to ANY federal taxes (pay your local/state ones) to show these corrupt demons we mean business.
When they try to force the point, thats when it will be clear or not if people need to invoke the 2nd amendment. - scallon, on 01/01/2009, -1/+22can i sleep over?
- SSUK, on 01/01/2009, -0/+19By what? The fact that the US government is bailing out rich people (with tax payers money, the same tax payers a lot of these institutions have probably been ripping off for years) or that they conveniently lost track of where it's going?

http://i43.tinypic.com/madlw6.jpg - boxxa, on 01/01/2009, -0/+16You write a check for 700 billion and cant add in the additional 100k a year for someone to specifically to track where the hell the money went? Amazing government.
- scallon, on 01/01/2009, -4/+19I have no qualms with most of the unions in our country, but i would rather cut off my balls then help the UAW.
- LenBaird, on 01/01/2009, -0/+15"Paulson's decision to focus the program on providing banks and other companies with capital injections _ rather than the original strategy of buying rotten assets from banks_ was necessary to respond to quickly changing financial market conditions, according to the new Treasury report."
Translation: "As soon as the bill was passed, with total secrecy at the secretary's discretion written into it, Paulson proceeded with the real plan. Hand out all of the money secretly to other banks, who will buy up real things of value (smaller banks, maybe some infrastructure in Minnesota) as the economy crashes and people start selling everything at firesale prices." - BlueAyez, on 01/01/2009, -0/+14Where's the transparency? Where's the oversight?
- phlux, on 01/01/2009, -2/+16..Of Dick Cheney!?
- twiztidsinz, on 01/01/2009, -0/+13THINK OF THE ALUMINUM!
- rda1441, on 01/01/2009, -0/+12It's time for people to go to jail....those who received the money for basically stealing tax payer's money, and those who gave it away, for aiding a criminal act (Congress specifically).
- wpc33, on 01/02/2009, -1/+13Why make Billions, when we could make....Millions?
- inactive, on 01/01/2009, -0/+12^^^^^^^^^^
You hit the nail on the head. I am sure that there are a LOT of individuals whose pockets were lined out of the 700 billion. You have to be extremely naive to NOT think that due to corruption and greed this money went to areas it shouldn't have.
Thats the way this whole thing worked. The people who created the whole mess ran around scaring everyone that the world would collapse if we didn't pay for their mess up out of our own pocket. I would love to be in their shoes right now. Honestly, I would be laughing my ass off at the stupidity of my fellow americans.
We just let them rape us, and then we paid for it. Now they go buy 37 million apartments in swanky NYC.
Watch out america. There is nothing worse than one of your own scorned. 'And I know I'm not alone.' - Dumbledorito, on 01/01/2009, -1/+13I read somewhere that the Republicans set up this office with a sign on the door that says "Invisible Hand of the Market." They just shove all of the regulatory paperwork under the door, and the person in the office acknowledges it by making noises that sound a lot like a paper shredder.
- inactive, on 01/01/2009, -1/+12Also, see
http://digg.com/business_finance/WSJ_com_Treasury_ ...
They've actually spent $10 Billion more than the $350 Billion they're technically allowed to have spent, but what's a mere ten BILLION dollars among friends/taxpayers?? Sigh... - 13ohemian, on 01/01/2009, -0/+11wow.They swindled 700 billion , without even being scared that this was the hot topic for a month!?
they got balls of steel .
Some really strong people! - kareemachan, on 01/01/2009, -0/+11A can conscience?
- LenBaird, on 01/01/2009, -1/+12I hope this doesn't happen. A good example of this is Olbermann. When he talks about Bush or the republicans, he is right on the money. As soon as democrats come up, he becomes an apologist.
- xurvis, on 01/02/2009, -0/+10tell me where and when you're dumping the tea and i'll be there
- inactive, on 01/01/2009, -0/+10Al Capone and Bonnie and Clyde are probably sitting in hell right now look up at these bankers thinking, "man we were just small time criminals". The banking industry, the biggest example of grand larceny this country has ever seen.
- Sil369, on 01/02/2009, -0/+10holy jesus
- Jaq524, on 01/02/2009, -0/+10Got any info on the other 99.99643% of it?
- 16x9, on 01/01/2009, -0/+10Anyone else see this coming when Bernanke and Paulson insisted that no one be allowed to second-guess or countermand how they were spending this money?
It's like the Iraq war all over again. Multiple billions gone. No one knows where it went. And sure as hell, not a lot of it went to protecting and equipping our American military men and women or helping Iraq to become a peaceful democracy. - TheAeneid, on 01/01/2009, -0/+9I told you so. In fact, WE ALL YOU SO!
Congress was complicit in this. We all begged them not to do it without oversight and they ***** did it anyway. I wrote both my Senators beforehand and got back lame form letters explaining how they were going to go ahead and move forward on it despite the vast amount of the constituency being against it. And this was Feinstein & Boxer!
Washington has their collective head so far up their collective ass they can't see the probe light coming down the colon. - thespice, on 01/01/2009, -2/+11omfg wow
- inactive, on 01/01/2009, -0/+9Would that the process were so cheap...Bush has managed to spend an inflation adjusted $20 Billion more than Clinton did ***** up all manner of regulations. That's why I don't like Bush's legacy of regulatory ***** being called "deregulation," because the less-spending approach wasn't ever tried. What's wrong with "legacy of regulatory *****" anyway?
- Corrosionx, on 01/01/2009, -2/+11It's not 700 billion, the last numbers are more like 8 trillion.
Here's hoping in 2009 Keynesian economists will take a hike and the free market becomes free again. -
