- anteyekon4myst, on 10/12/2007, -3/+38Ellison was on CNN and asked to respond to this and never said anything bad back. His message was essential that diversity strengthens America and that people like Goode just need to be educated about different cultures. Good for Ellison for not being baited into an argument and showing restraint.
- StarCrusher, on 10/12/2007, -2/+37There's a simple explanation for that. Ellison is a class act. Goode is a dumbass.

Clearly you have no idea what his constituents in rural Virginia are like. - dricket, on 10/12/2007, -3/+30I'm shocked a member of Congress would be so blatantly intolerant.
From http://www.nytimes.com/2006/12/21/us/21koran.html
'Linwood Duncan, a spokesman for Mr. Goode, said the Virginia lawmaker had no intention of backing down, despite the furor. “He stands by the letter,” Mr. Duncan said. “He has no intention of apologizing.”'
http://www.house.gov/goode/contact.shtml - djSyndrome, on 10/12/2007, -3/+26He apparently has no intention of being re-elected, either.
- slugicide, on 10/12/2007, -5/+28How many languages do you speak, SqueakyWheel?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+22I still think nothing beats Glenn Beck's question. How do I know you're not a terrorist sent to destroy us from the inside? (paraphrased)
- rspeed, on 10/12/2007, -7/+21@ Reap
The United States doesn't have an official language. That's an important thing to realize.
Another thing to remember is that there have been large influxes of immigrants throughout our nation's history. Everything settles out after a generation thanks to public schools. - PabloIV, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15 First, this Virgil dude is an ill informed idiot, who has ill informed idiots as staffers. His Press Secretary should be fired, no self respecting staffer would ever allow his congressman boss to come out with such dribble.
@rspeed
I speak Spanish, English, French and Italian, the native one being Spanish, which I speak on a daily basis, as I live in Puerto Rico. It is also my opinion that speaking many languages is always an asset.
Nevertheless, although English might not be an official language (which I'm not sure is true, I think it's selected by the states and most of them have picked English except for California, which also selected Spanish and some others,I might be wrong though, please correct me) it is still the tongue of the land which culturally is a defining aspect, the UN even requires that groups applying for National consideration speak a common tongue. Although public schools used to do a pretty good job of teaching said tongue of the land, to the children of immigrants, it is a growing trend that certain areas populated mainly by immigrants maintain immigrant cultural aspects such as their native tongue. In the past these areas were sparse and rarely more than patches, heavily surrounded by English speaking Americans, but in recent years they have coalesced, removing the need to assimilate into the dominating culture. It has been debated by many political thinkers, that a nation without a unifying language will lead to disunity and eventually rupture, such as appears to be the case with Spain and Canada.
It is my belief that all Americans should speak English, not only English, but at least English, and I agree that non-English speaking congress persons are absolutely unacceptable, I'm not saying, non-fluent, I'm talking about non-speaking. The guy would need to be able to communicate with his colleagues, the answer to: "Congressman, do you concur with Speaker Pelosi's proposal?", should NEVER be: "Traduceme eso Pedrito que no entendi lo que me dijo" the day that happens you can start the countdown to the end. BTW you should learn Spanish and read that. - rspeed, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15There's no such thing as redneck states, only redneck people.
Such as Virgil Goode. - darkmule, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12I always sit and wonder what the ***** Thomas Jefferson would think about where the hell this country is going, and how misunderstood and poorly treated his documents are.
I've also been pondering over why its such a huge deal to be sworn in with a Qu'ran. Think about it? Its a holy book, it refers to the same God, you're swearing to that god when sworn in, there isn't much of an issue there at all.
I'm disgusted with the lack of respect people have for others, and how a member of congress has the balls to even state ***** as wildly as he has done. Allen lost his election in Virgina, I'm willing to bet Goode will follow the same path. There will always be racist and discrimination in our world, but people need to realize that its in their best personal interest to keep their mouths shut.
People wonder why Jefferson did 'separation of church and state', this is why, Kudo's to Keith Ellison for doing his job as an elected member of congress. - forgiste, on 10/12/2007, -5/+15 "As regards the individual nature, woman is defective and misbegotten, for the active power of the male seed tends to the production of a perfect likeness in the masculine sex; while the production of a woman comes from defect in the active power...." "And a man will choose...any wickedness, but the wickedness of a woman...Sin began with a woman and thanks to her we all must die" Ecclesiasticus, 25:18, 19 & 33. 1
"And I find more bitter than death the woman, whose heart is snares and nets, and her hands as bands: whoso pleaseth God shall escape from her; but the sinner shall be taken by her." Ecclesiastes 7:26, from the Hebrew Scriptures (Old Testament)
That's from the Holy Bible man.. do you agree with that? - pintomp3, on 10/12/2007, -5/+15first senator macaca, now this guy? i guess they r trying to take the backwards crown back from w. va.
- frankidadio, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Virgil Goode is a national embarassment. Is this how a majority of his district in Virginia really feel? I thought Virginians were an intelligent bunch.. makes you wonder...
- galore, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11"Quoting the Old Testament to attack Christianity is pointless"
If the Old Testament is so irrelevant to Christians, then why do they always dust off Leviticus to bash gays?
Always pick and choose for convenience. That's the Hypocritical Christian Way. - chicbicyclist, on 10/12/2007, -5/+12I don't want any righties using the "intolerant left" argument anymore please.
- rationalist, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Keith Ellison not an arab, you ignorant asshat. He is an African-American from Detroit who family has lived here for over 250 years. he converted to Islam in college.
Perhaps you were thinking of Arab-American Republican Congressman Darrel Issa (R-Calif.);
Or, perhaps, Arab-American Republican Congressman Charles Boustany (R-La.),
Or, Arab-American Republican Congressman Rep. Ray LaHood (R-Ill.),
Or, Arab-American Democratic Congressman Rep. Nick Rahall (D-W.Va.);
Or, former Arab-American Congressman John Baldacci, now governor of Maine.
Or, maybe you were thinking of Arab-American Senator John Sununu (R-N.H.) - former White House Chief of Staff under George Bush, Sr., and former Governor of New Hampshire;
Or former Senate Majority Leader Republican Arab-American George Mitchell;
Speaking of the White House, perhaps you were thinking of Spenser Abraham, former Secretary of Energy in the current White House - or, perhaps former Director of the OMB Mitch Daniels, now governor of Indiana - or, perhaps, Donna Shalala, longest-serving Secretary of Health and Human Services in US history.
Or, former U.S. Senators James Abourezk and James Abdnor, both of South Dakota; and former Congressional members Pat Danner of Missouri, Mary Rose Oakar of Ohio, the late George Kasem of California, who was the first Arab American elected to the U.S. Congress, Abraham Kazen, Jr. of Texas, Toby Moffett of Connecticut, and Chris John of Lousiana.
Or, perhaps General John Abizaid, had of US Central Command in Iraq.
No, I don't really think you were thinking of any of these respected Americans of Arab descent - because you weren't THINKING in the first place, you ignorant bigoted *****. - DeeEffEss, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7When will people realize that the problem is Illegal Immigration, and not Immigration in general?

- KonigSchutze, on 10/12/2007, -5/+10People who say "STOP IMMIGRATION" are mostly people with 1.0 GPA, why should we listen to those morons while we're paying their food stamps. Truth be told, immigrants are smart group of people since they know they can't survive if they don't have their brain. People like that idiot, for example, have their life already made for them. If asked, he probably can't even solve 2x=4, find x. BTW, illegal immigration is a huge ***** problem, no question about that, I dare someone say legal immigration is a problem.
- Impur3, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6There's an immigrant in the Governor's Mansion in California who shares the same party with this joker. Not that we didn't already know this, but immigration isn't the issue, it's the fact that he isn't Christian. Welcome to Cromwell's England, 2.0.

- Tenlow, on 10/12/2007, -5/+9I think you misspelled the word "are". I mean it's a real easy mistake to make and all, but at least you got one third of the letters in the word correctly.

While there may not be an official national language of the USA, there IS a de facto national language; when all laws are passed in a specific language, public schools are all taught in a specific language (saying there are special spanish-speaking classrooms is basically admitting my point; if speaking spanish in classrooms were normal, there wouldn't have to be special funding, allowances, etc for classes to do so). and basically everything in the country is one language, it's a pretty good indication you should learn it.
Let me put it this way- if you went to France, do you REALLY think it would be reasonable for you to get pissed if people didn't understand you because you didn't learn French? I'm not saying that knowing Spanish isn't valuble to some degree, I'm just saying that inconveniencing the majority of people because the minority is too lazy to learn something makes no sense. - Gerz1219, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6@Monolith2 -- Uh, in order to vote, one must be a naturalized citizen, not an illegal immigrant. Unless you're a Native American, there's a naturalized citizen not too far up in your family tree.
- rationalist, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5He's NOT swearing in on the Quran, any more than hypocrite Goode has been sworn in on the Bible any of his five terms. Congressmen and women are NOT sworn in on any holy book, they recite a standard oath of office (which doesn't even include "so help me God" at the end).
The hand on the Bible shtick is just a photo op performed after the fact for the cameras, and to bamboozle ignorant prejudiced people like yourself, who think somehow that putting a hand on a stack of dead trees makes one a moral person.
I guess now that you've found that all your congressional reps since the founding of this nation did not swear on a Holly Book, you'll just have to renounce your American citizenship. - SpenceMasta, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4im glad goode said something like this, its nice to hear politicians are being a little bit more honest, now we know who the biggots are
- woody56292, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Pablo,
I can read it. yeah for me and 2 years of spanish in high school. - dclowd9901, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6I personally commend the Muslim congressman from Minn. for wanting to take his oath on the Quran. If he wasn't swearing on something he believed in (like the Bible), what would that say about his feeling of obligation to his duties as a congressman?
- TripinVA, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Unfortunately, my district carried George "Macaca" Allen by a wide margin. I expect this to increase, not decrease, Virgil Goode's support in my district.
I voted against him, and a lot of my friends did to. Unfortunately, this area is full of bible-thumping hicks who watch Jerry Falwell on TV every week. - akinder, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I live out in Forest, about 3 miles east of Lynchburg, it's scary how much of a stranglehold that Falwell and his Liberty sheep have on this place. Everything is zoned to one section, right next to the university, so they have this whole huge traffic mess. There's only a few bars, and they suck for the most part ( funny thing, usually you see a ***** of Liberty kids in there too ). They screwed up the side of the mountain where Liberty is so that the trees look like this huge LU from all angles.
And, naturally, he pushes the city council to include faith based items, etc. He's a jackass, him and his little herd. - rationalist, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4What the ***** does a pissing contest between "holy books" have to do with elected officials of the Constitutional Republic of the United States of America?
Article Vi, section three of the US Constitution states: "no religious test shall ever be required as a qualification to any office or public trust under the United States." If it were, I assure you we wouldn't have a ***** Scientologist in the current Congress. Have you bigots bringing up the Quran grilled each and every "Christian" Congresscritter about their religious beliefs?
That isn't even in a later Amendment, like the Bill of Rights some of you Christian reactionary ***** want to abolish so you can go back to stoning adulterers and disobedient children. It's in the original ***** Constitution written by your revered "Christian" founders!
What a bunch of asshat ignorant hypocritical parrots. Learn the law of the land before you embarrass yourselves further. - Urusai, on 10/12/2007, -5/+6Quoting the Old Testament to attack Christianity is pointless, since the New Testament, particularly the words of Jesus in the Gospels, override it as Christian doctrine. Not that I'm approving of Christianity, I'm just saying Jesus wasn't particularly violent or self-aggrandizing in the way that Mohammed clearly was.
- rationalist, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2No member of Congress is sworn in on any holy book not the Old Testament, not the New Testament, not the Quran, not Dianetics, not the premier edition of the X-Men. The oath of office is simple and secular. Many hypocritical Congresscritters later have a fake photo op where they put their hand on the Bible, to fool the ignorant rubes at home.
This is a completely fabricated issue, and to argue whether or not he should use the Quran is to play right into the phony frame the Radical Religious Right has created.
It is no different than getting sucked into an argument about the "fairness" of teaching the theory of evolution but not the "theory" of creationism. It's a phony premise based on a lie. Don't be fooled. - AARGH2K, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2This doofus is the main reason why I say I live in NORTHERN Virginia. We were the ones that got Allen out and Webb in. Really wish we could be the 51st state. That way we wouldn't have to send all our tax dollars to Richmond so all the old tobacco cronies can waste it down south.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2The great thing about freedom of speech is that it always provides enough rope for a bigot to hang himself on.
- azzrik, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Could someone please explain why anything that is spoken by a Muslim which degrades or insults a Westerner is ignored on Digg as I have found many articles about different things said and done by different Muslims throughout the world.
But say something negative about a Muslim that a Westerner has said, and you'll have them by the thousands with both Westerners and Muslims attacking the Westerner and calling them a racist and a Bigot, it must be great to belong to a Religion that no matter what you do, you are never wrong and anyone who says you are is set upon. - hamlet9000, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3How is it possible that Glenn Beck still has a job after that?
- rlh1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Oh, I see, the people who live in these nations are predomantly non-Christian. And here from all that I read, people of North American are 80% Christian and those of South America are 90% Christian. I guess that that's not true ?
Of course maybe Christains are not as mean and Reactionary ***** as you say since there is no persecution of gays, according to the map, and there is so much in the Middle East, even the death penalty.
Thanks for setting me straight.
May Christ Look Over You. - azzrik, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1When you have home grown terrorist like in the London bombings going around killing people then obviously these so called Muslims do have quite a lot of power, maybe if they were scrutinized as the others then things like this might have been avoided.
- woody56292, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4@Galore:
A christian should never bash anybody for being gay. if they do they are hypocrites. Punch them in the head for me if you see one.
However, Homosexuality is mentioned numerous times in the new testament as well. The books of Romans, Corinthians, and Timothy all have parts about homosexuality.
so therefore, nothing has changed and it is still considered a sin. ( and we don't have to brush out Leviticus to tell anyone who asks )
edit: also let me just say, this senator is a hick and needs to seriously re-evaluate his life. Since he appears to say he is a Christian, might I suggest he open up the bible to the Gospels... you know, where Jesus ACCEPTED and hung around people of other faiths/sinners/non-believers etc. - guerrilla_suit, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Using religeon to make any arguement is ridculous. Your belief, over your belief over your belief... just stop. You never change anyones mind using this to back up anything other than, yes it does say that. And since it says that, what does that mean?
A secular government has no place for a holy book of any kind anyway. Swear on a telephone book, I don't care. You're a politician, if all that holy moley stuff was so important you would have become a leader of a church. Just do your job.
Any politician who stands on a platform of bigotry and religeous, or racial intolerance has no place in the United States Government. Didn't he swear on a holy book to uphold the US constitution or something like that? Or does VA think that we're still in the civil war? - rlh1, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Oh, and while you're at it.
Can you please look at this map the shows the persecution of Gays around the world.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:World_homosexuality_laws.PNG
I have a hard time figuring this out. Why are are the Christian countries the purple shaded colors and the ones in the Middle east those orange and red colors. There must be something wrong here. Maybe the charts wrong.
Thanks in advance - DanThePainter, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2A bit of "backstory" on this controversy may be gleaned from this post regarding an Islamist group in Rep. Goode's district:

Snippets below;please click the link and read the whole blog post.
>>...Sir, with all respect, this group of people swear their allegiance to a Pakistani terrorist, Sheikh Gilani, who is not permitted in this country, and who is thought to be the mastermind of several assassinations in this country, not to mention the death of Daniel Pearl....
...“But first: some background on Jamaat ul-Fuqra. The group was founded in New York by Sheikh Gilani in New York in 1980. Its current headquarters is in Hancock, New York, and it has various compounds, or Jamaats, scattered throughout the United States and Canada, notably in Colorado, New York, Tennessee, Georgia, and Virginia. Most of the adherents are reported to be American-born Black Muslims who follow a strict Islamist ideology.
Sheikh Gilani, you may remember, is the cleric with whom Daniel Pearl had arranged an interview back in January of 2002. Unfortunately, Mr. Pearl was betrayed by his sources, and then abducted and beheaded. Sheikh Gilani was arrested later that month and languishes in Pakistani custody.
So this is the kind of people we are dealing with here. They launder money, smuggle firearms, plan and carry out assassinations and bombings, and conduct intense Islamist indoctrination, including inside American prisons......”>> - rlh1, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Oh, I see, the people who live in these nations are predomantly non-Christian. May Christ Look Over You. - rationalist, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1No, your definitions are wrong. You incorrectly label secular democracies "Christian" nations.
And it's an irrelevant straw herring in any case. The point was that there is no religious test for office in the US, it is prohibited by the Constitution. So a discussion about the Quran or the Bible is irrelevant in connection with the suitability of members of Congress. -
