- newbill123, on 02/02/2008, -1/+6Dignity is a Catholic group in favor of modernization of the Church's stances on many adult sexual practices and gender attitudes. It's usually known as a gay & lesbian group because of it's stance on permitting consensual sex between adults of the same gender, but it also favors other policies such as allowing priests to marry, equality of women, and condemnation of rape in all forms. Dignity has never favored any approval of pedophilia: sex between an adult and child.
Since church leaders can't easily "bring up" the subject of priest child molestation without revealing or implicating there may be a big problem "behind the robes", the leaders have used this fight against Dignity as their way of building trust with the public at large. If you confuse people that gay sex and pedophilia are the same thing and then attack the pro-gay group you appear that you are just enforcing God's law. In this way you build trust that you're fighting for "traditional values" when in fact you are trying to cover up your own little messes behind the scenes.
Some leaders genuinely feel that Dignity's modern attitudes toward sex and gender are wrong, but there has been no real debate yet. The leaders have found it's more beneficial to fight these "sexual liberals" and build trust with the public than to reveal the hypocrisy of the diocese.
Whether you're gay or not, all Catholics who are against pedophilia should be fighting for (or at least asking for real debate) about the reformations in Dignity. - JigoroKano, on 02/02/2008, -0/+5Child molesters typically show preference for the opposite gender in adults and the same gender in children, therefore they aren't considered "gay" in the regular sense.
