- BuckQJohnson, on 04/13/2009, -4/+228I agree with you both. Why is is so important to shut down the internet in times of crisis. It's not terrorism, because if "terrorists" are already in the US the them talking on the internet is the least of our problems. Because they would already have there marching orders whether they email somebody or not. They want control of the internet because they can't control how the information gets out to the public. By info going through the MSM (Main Stream Media), its centralized and the govt. can control what when and how the info gets out. With the internet, it's not that wrong information will get out. Its the fact that to much information will get out and this may show that whatever happens in the US for the "emergency" situation might not be what it is on the surface. Somebody could leak info to the public that such and such emergency was a mistake or on purpose or criminal by the govt.
The internet is a tool that has empowered the little guy. What used to take a room full of people to do and money can be done with your computer and instant access to different databases. The govt. knows that they can't control every bit of information. Information sometimes get out by mistake or they haven't figured out that some people are able with the internet to search out different points of data and see a picture that they thought nobody could figure out. - jsffive, on 04/13/2009, -2/+171Of course the EXCUSE is that it involves "the realm of traffic lights and rail networks and water and electricity", but I can't help but think that it will most likely be initiated when too much truth is getting out.
The elites are getting nervous about controlling the propaganda.
And why exactly is the traffic lights, rail networks, water system, and power grid on the FREAKING INTERNET?!?!?!
Wouldn't a secure BBS system work better? I mean, why should I be able to access those systems in the first place? Sounds pretty lame and trumped-up to me. - Goph09, on 04/14/2009, -1/+137What the hell would happen to those people who used voip? what if there was an emergency?
If something happened and Obama shut down communication, that would only add to the chaos and spread it globally
Hell if I were a terrorist, I'd use it to my advantage..wait till they shut it down, then continue attacks..since there's no communication, it'd probably be easier - buckyballs, on 04/14/2009, -4/+136Who died and made America boss of the internet?!
- Shaggy3, on 04/14/2009, -2/+99Lets just start our own internet.
This ones getting pretty gay. - uberdragon, on 04/14/2009, -1/+96No one person, body or government should have the power to "turn off" the internet, especially in a time of crisis! There are services our youth are growing up with they "can't live with out". Could you imagine their terror if their internet existence was distinguished also! And by or own government no less.
- SonOfLibertyCA, on 04/14/2009, -3/+90how stupid are these people? Shutting down the internet would be an act of terrorism. Saying you may do this is pretty close, if not over the line.
- SouthernBull, on 04/13/2009, -8/+86agreed.
- kolobcreek, on 04/14/2009, -1/+74If there's one thing we've all learned from the internet is don't underestimate doped out slackers with too much free time on their hands.
I bet in less than a month you'll have a hacknet streaming across the nation on the back of cheap linksys router and dot bomb fire sale equipment. Cat5e strung from every tree utility pole power line, slung through every ditch drainage and culvert. And it would probably work better than the original. - airencracken, on 04/14/2009, -0/+51How about no.
- Suspicious, on 04/14/2009, -0/+50Democracy is power to the people, not the president!!!!!!!
- Soyea, on 04/14/2009, -2/+50when and if they ever use that power. that would be a sign for the people to get there guns and go urban. the government just became the red coats.
- Suspicious, on 04/14/2009, -1/+41I am usably not on Republican's side but I agree here. Government has to much control on every aspect on our lives. Lets have a bill where the people have more power!!! And who the ***** wrote and introduce this *****?
- superc0w, on 04/14/2009, -5/+43when they kick at your front door
how you gonna come?
with your hands on your head
or on the trigger of your gun - inactive, on 04/14/2009, -7/+42obama will sign it
chaaaaaaaaange - ismhmr, on 04/14/2009, -1/+35Because they want to shut down free speech so the truth dosen't come out about their next planned engineered crisis. Thats all its about. Pure and simple.
- yurishoujo, on 04/14/2009, -2/+35bipartisan tyranny, hooray! Good to see the sides working together, just as Obama wanted.
- jynweythek, on 04/14/2009, -8/+41GET YOUR DIRTY HANDS OFF OUR INTERNET YOU ***** NEOCON FASCISTS
/caps - richmomz, on 04/14/2009, -0/+31When Sen. J. Rockefeller said he wishes the internet "never existed", apparently he meant it!
- defendliberty, on 04/14/2009, -3/+32Your nickname says it all. Baaaa Baaa
- ZombieSociety, on 04/14/2009, -0/+29Fun Fact: It's not really a democracy.
- evergrim, on 04/14/2009, -1/+29Are you being sarcastic with your stupid name / brainwashed sheep attitude? Surely you must be?
- unlimitedorb, on 04/14/2009, -5/+31The president already has this power via Executive Order! You're getting worked up over a meaningless bill in the Senate when, at any time, the president has the right to suspend the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. Let's look at the bigger picture here people.
- stone2020, on 04/14/2009, -2/+28Free pass for the Democrats! I think we have a Democrat president and Democrat majority in Congress. Unless of course you were calling the Democrats NEOCON FASCISTS. THEY ARE CERTAINLY STARTING TO LOOK LIKE THEM.
- ZhiZaki, on 04/13/2009, -6/+32What does this mean "Shut down the internet"? Do those dudes still not get that you can't just *shut* it down.... What about the rest of the world? What about P2P? What about the government itself? Although, this does kinda remind of that South Park episode where Kyle had to "reboot" the internet......hehehee
- inactive, on 04/14/2009, -7/+31I'm guessing the Daily Kos and MoveOn aren't too worried. Chains you can believe in.
- Ophie, on 04/14/2009, -1/+25It's just an excuse to get the power to do such things.
- record200, on 04/14/2009, -1/+25"I am usably not on Republican's side"
Republican or Democratic. They are all alike here:
"*Authored* by *Democratic* Sen. Jay Rockefeller of West Virginia and *Republican* Olympia Snowe of Maine, the Cybersecurity Act of 2009 seeks to create a Cybersecurity Czar to centralize power now held by the Pentagon, National Security Agency, Department of Commerce and the Department of Homeland Security" - Leprince, on 04/14/2009, -0/+23I Hope this guy is being sarcastic.
If POTUS shuts down the tubes in the US, it affects pretty much all the world. - JeddHampton, on 04/14/2009, -3/+25Mr. Speech. Mr. Freedom Of Speech.
- thatashguy, on 04/14/2009, -2/+22Umm, dude- it can happen within a country (not the world) pretty god damn easily if the bill is passed, just the backlash that it would create if it was to be _switched_ off would most likely be more damaging (not physically (maybe)) then the actual attack itself or for whatever the reason was for the halt to be actioned.
Then again I have no idea what I'm talking about.
So, eh, bury me.
Thanks for reading. - psolms, on 04/14/2009, -0/+20actually, he did. i remember it well. it was 1948. i was a young lad working on the collective farm at the time. good old joe announced that the internet was a possible security risk from terrorists. the very next week, he shut down the internet. we didnt get access again until 1991, when America Online sent us one of those 'free 1 month' discs.
- xs11ax, on 04/14/2009, -0/+19i dont have a gun
- celotil, on 04/14/2009, -0/+19Mr Jsffive may be wrong on this, but many other people also think that a bill that empowers the government with the ability to shut down the Internet in any country is just plain wrong.
Rather than attacking Jsffive, why not illustrate why he, and many other people including myself, might be wrong?
What possible reason could any government want to be able to shut down the Internet?
To stop the flow of information, obviously, but what information? Terrorists and criminals are going to have a backup, guaranteed, so the only people left to silence are those law abiding citizens who might just want to know during a time of crisis,
"WHAT THE ***** IS GOING ON?!" - Rivetgeek, on 04/14/2009, -1/+19This will NEVER pass. Who controls the government? People and corporations with money. How do they get and keep said money these days? The internet. Everything from bank transfers, loans servicing, 911 system, stock market, etc its ALL networked these days and you cant simply just shut down part of the internet. You would basically bankrupt the country within a day.
For example, I used to work for british telecom as a network engineer. One of our customers was Nestle. For their gold sites, they lost a thousand dollars a MINUTE whenever the net went down. We had to have dual pops and dual onsite routers with a one hour hardware replacement SLA for those sites. When the tsunami took out two gold sites, we had to have a ***** HELICOPTER fly in with satellite modems for two gold sites. Bodies werent even cold and Nestle was up and running again
tl;dr: Large corporations would NEVER let the gov just shut off the internet. - xGORDOx, on 04/14/2009, -7/+24Yea, I thought Bush was the dictator?
Hope, Change, and Total Control!
Is anyone eles noticing a trend with Obama? - nicktomyskins, on 04/14/2009, -1/+18I wonder if they have a giant router they can unplug
http://mercenario.files.wordpress.com/2008/04/scre ... - kocurejd, on 04/14/2009, -0/+16There's no internet to find out why there's no internet!
- MWeather, on 04/14/2009, -4/+20Ron Paul would veto this. His nickname is Dr. No for a reason.
- automobiel, on 04/14/2009, -1/+17Do you think sometimes we are in the movie Wag the Dog. Like the so called hacking into our electric grid. Yea right. They want to make us scared so we will let this internet bill pass. Just like the Republicans and the terror threat and the Patriot Bill.
- hatdrop, on 04/14/2009, -0/+15would make sense if the internet was still arpanet, but it's not. while i still get pissed at the bigotry displayed by a lot of users, the internet is the last bastion of free speech and freedom information or misinformation. i don't give a ***** who the ***** is proposing it but limiting access is NEVER a good idea. vote this garbage down.
- jman583, on 04/14/2009, -8/+23No Al Gore internet jokes? Come on Digg...
- Elderon, on 04/14/2009, -5/+19then get one
- richmomz, on 04/14/2009, -2/+16"And why exactly is the traffic lights, rail networks, water system, and power grid on the FREAKING INTERNET?!?!?!" Because they need an excuse to shut down the internet when they want to - duh!
- inactive, on 04/14/2009, -5/+19I'm not a Republican. It's hard being an American now.
- tgc1, on 04/14/2009, -0/+13Constitutional Republic.
Remove the Constitution however... and you've just got a Republic. A Banana Republic some would say. Albeit much bigger. - inactive, on 04/14/2009, -3/+16Am I the only one that has a small wish the world goes apocolyptic in their lifetime, and they're lucky enough to survive the initial problem? Sure you'd have a damn good chance of dying very quickly, but it'd be ***** ORESOME!
- Reavie, on 04/14/2009, -0/+12Halting the Internet eliminates a medium of correlation. The ability to organize anything would be very much hindered without the Internet.
Albeit a repost, this article is important. The article I read before said it's just like telephones; at times of emergency, the phones will be clogged with people calling their mom and dad asking if they're alright, leaving lines that the emergency workers need numbers, and I'm all for bumping people off the phone if it means an emergency worker gets it, and they're using this same excuse with the Internet plugged in instead of phone lines.
I have no idea why they have to 'shut down the internet' because of an emergency. They claim they need the bandwidth to deal with the crisis, and that is absolutely retarded. In no way would the tubes get clogged, and since when do emergency workers use the Internet to deal with crisis anyways? Never have I heard something like "ALIEN INVASION HALTED DUE TO INTERNET POWER BEING ALLOCATED" or something completely out of the box like that. - nickespinosa, on 04/14/2009, -0/+12They must be scared of those pesky twittering protesters.
