- AmyVernon, on 02/19/2009, -17/+142um, most of the people boycotting aren't the ones buying the post in the first place.
- dannykeene, on 02/20/2009, -59/+142It wasn't even racist. These people just need to go to a protest once a week, goaded on by al "bs tawana browly" sharpton. They were to busy to read the news about the chimp attack because they were sitting on a rev al sharpton website awaiting the next perceived slight to incite another boycott. Is anyone even afraid of boycotts anymore?
These people are too stupid and too sensitive to be given a voice and national recognition - Killphibian, on 02/20/2009, -7/+69What do you mean "these people"?
- CreateTheFuture, on 02/20/2009, -8/+69What do YOU mean "these people"??
- barktwiggs, on 02/20/2009, -9/+59I showed the cartoon in question to members of my family without telling them about the 'racist' controversy and they all thought it was funny. After they laughed I told them that it was considered racist and defamatory of Obama. My wife said, "but it was congress who wrote the stimulus, not Obama."
- graphictruth, on 02/20/2009, -13/+61I read a New York Post once, while visiting New York. I've been boycotting it ever since, for exactly the same reason that I boycott "Us Magazine" and glue sniffing. Things like that can cost you brain cells, which means you reduce your lifetime ability to appreciate fine scotch.
Actually, I'm willing to accept that they never noticed or understood that their cartoon could be taken to be racist. Which seems like a faint excuse. But no. Not for someone in journalism. When you write a newspaper and publish an offensive editorial - the offense is supposed to be surgical, deliberate and effective.
Oh, and funny.
So, fairly much a total failure. - Bermygoon, on 02/20/2009, -8/+54
Sharpton is the most racist pig out there. I wish those duke lacrosse team would have taken him to court for all the hatred and lies he said about them.
Why does this a$$hole get to represent black people in the first place? - Tenareth, on 02/20/2009, -13/+49OMG, seriously? Recent Chimpanzee attack, common use of Chimp as someone being stupid... (used for Bush over and over). This is all crap that people are using to make up fake racism.
This is the problem with the US right now, we are so up in arms about fake racism that nobody cares about the real stuff that is still out there. - inactive, on 02/19/2009, -11/+43At this moment, hundreds of demonstrators rallied to boycott the NY Post to reflect the "chimpanzee cartoon" made by the newspaper. The details of the cartoon can be found here:
http://digg.com/political_opinion/New_York_Post_Ru ... - cptshamrock, on 02/20/2009, -2/+33Scott Adams (of Dilbert) has a great explanation of this. Its not racist we've just been conditioned to see things that way.
http://dilbert.com/blog/entry/chimp_cartoon/ - JCEEZ, on 02/20/2009, -4/+35I am usually a whistle blower when it comes to racism, but this, IMO, is not racist. The first thing I thought of when I saw the cartoon was the saying "even a monkey can do it" or something like that. It made me think of this scene in the simpsons where a bunch of monkeys are writing scripts for some show........ When I saw on CNN talking about this cartoon being racist, I still didn't realize wtf they were talking about until they explained it.
I think its racist for THINKING it's racist meaning that you see a picture of a monkey, and automatically connect it with some kind of Black thing.... sometimes a monkey is just a monkey! - RealmDown, on 02/20/2009, -16/+46I agree it is racist; however, as long as the double standard exists, I don't care much about the protest either.
Black Entertainment Television is ok, but a similar White channel would be racist.
"Black power" is acceptable pride, but "White power" is the opposite.
Until BOTH are right or BOTH are wrong, then it isn't really racism. It is political maneuvering for power with a racist face. - Ryan_KW, on 02/20/2009, -19/+48Sure the cartoon is in poor taste, but it's not racist. It's these boycotts, and protests every time someone slams Obama that will prevent his re-election, even if he becomes one of the greatest presidents of all time. No one will want him running the country, because no one will be able to criticize him without a protest. I'm sure I saw over 100 cartoons portraying Bush as a monkey. Nobody got up in arms over that. He may have been one, but does that make it right? Yes, because he was the president, and we have the right to criticize what he does, no matter what color his skin is.
- TheEggAndI, on 02/20/2009, -2/+29can you blame him for lumping them together? all protesters look the same anyway
- inactive, on 02/20/2009, -3/+29Your wife could run circles around your average Digg user.
- inactive, on 02/20/2009, -16/+42The cartoon was not racist because the artist did not intend it to be so.
People are interpreting it as racist but that is their opinion. Anything can be interpreted any way you want.
The "Rev" Sharpton has to find racism everywhere he looks else he will fade from the public eye. And what a glorious day that will be.
People like Sharpton and his ilk are what keep racism alive in this country. The so-called minorities are far more racist then they people they accuse. Vastly more ... - DiggRage, on 02/20/2009, -1/+26This particular quote was never said by Michael Richards.
http://www.snopes.com/politics/soapbox/proudwhite. ... - CaptCarrot, on 02/20/2009, -12/+37They denote that the term is being used inaccurately. Which it is. This is not racism, just as much as it wasn't all those times a chimp was used to represent Bush.
If anybody ought to be upset about this, it's the chimps. - JackSchittt, on 02/20/2009, -3/+26And there's not a black person alive today who was enslaved either.
We should not have to "deal with it" because of stuff that happened 150 years ago.
The "slavery" excuse got old a long, long time ago. Get over it and move on.
Oh, and do you know who sold the black people into slavery in the first place? Other blacks. - AmyVernon, on 02/20/2009, -3/+26Not really. The Post has the lowest circ of the three NYC papers. But it does have a great sports section and I know a lot of people who buy it for that. Plus, I know some people who buy it from time to time just for the fab front-page headlines.

-Michael Richards - elam82, on 02/20/2009, -11/+32I don't see how this can be considered racist. If Obama himself wrote the stimulus plan, maybe, but he did not. So far as I am concerned, the monkey in this cartoon is all of Congress. Why aren't we worrying about the $787 billion Obama just spent instead of this trivial *****?
And even if the cartoonist was being racist, where's the freedom of speech defense? Half of the people in this nation can't tell what bandwagon of bitch they want to jump on, that's why this is an issue. - seanstuart, on 02/20/2009, -14/+34I'll back you on this one. I laughed at Bush-as-Chimp cartoons for eight years. I don't think Obama should be immune from the same jabs because of his skin. If anything, I think these protests do more to further the black-monkey slur more than the cartoon. Because the cartoon might have been a non-racial commentary on Obama's intelligence or sophistication (like it was done with Bush), while the protests make it plain: "This cartoon says blacks are monkeys! And we hate that!"
- pathouston22, on 02/20/2009, -9/+29So its ok to compare Bush to a chimp but not Obama? Lets not have double standards in race, ok?
- ndesantis, on 02/20/2009, -15/+34al sharpton and the rest of the media sat by and let Bush directly be called a monkey everyday and now its a huge deal.. liberals are very sensitive
- KimmyGibbler, on 02/20/2009, -36/+54Al Sharpton is a race-card-pulling extortionist, but at the same time it IS racist to refer to a black person as a monkey. I agree with the boycott, but I have a bad feeling that Sharpton will call it off as soon as NewsCorp cuts him a check for his "charity" and offers an "apology"
- JiveRabbit, on 02/20/2009, -0/+18Sharpton Supporters
- atmmac, on 02/20/2009, -9/+26Uh oh al sharpton to the rescue. This guys a joke im sick of people overreacting to stupid ***** like political cartoons. STOP BEING SO GODDAMN SENSITIVE! id ont think anyone really got hurt over this cartoon that i find funny. I bet Obama was laughing about it too. Its clearly a joke. Al Sharpton feels so important now that he can go out and protest woohoo! get a life.
- dankreek, on 02/20/2009, -2/+19You know what I think is racist? Saying that a person who has a black African father and a white American mother is ALL African-American. Why isn't he called our first half white president?
- BucktheFroncos, on 02/20/2009, -1/+17Exactly. Kudos to your wife for knowing the actual facts. Had the cartoon's caption said "...find someone else to SIGN the next stimulus bill" then the outrage would have merit. But at last check, Barry didn't write the bill. The rest of these myopic s refuse to look for the truth, and would rather be spoon fed their ideas. I weep for the future
- inactive, on 02/20/2009, -9/+24The New York Post doesn't care about black people.
- Terasiel, on 02/20/2009, -4/+19No matter what the case this isn't going to end well. I can only hope for one single thing to not come out of it: Sharpton getting another check cut out to him for having a fast enough mouth to be the front runner of everything African-American related. Whether he's wanted there or not.
- ZeeZee2k, on 02/20/2009, -0/+14A lot of black people hate Al Sharpton, they know he's using the race issues to promote himself.
- ZeeZee2k, on 02/20/2009, -5/+19Al Sharpton needs to stop bitching
- gfryesc, on 02/20/2009, -8/+22sorry jerks, but it is our constitutional right to call the president a 'chimp'. as in 'hail to the chimp'. Bush took his fair share, my personal favorite was when Homer Simpson said that he could blow pot smoke into the president's stupid monkey face and he'd have to sit there groovin' on it.
That's the nature of the job, get over yourselves. - dgaspard, on 02/20/2009, -1/+15I'm not pissed at the cartoon. But blackinthemiddle is correct. I can be fired for being racist. I can't be arrested. Freedom of speech is about the Government not limiting your speech. Business's and people can choose to promote or limit speech as much as they want.
- andrew606, on 02/20/2009, -1/+15wasnt bush compared to a monkey all the time?
- jayb1rd, on 02/20/2009, -3/+17I think this is a case where they were trying to make a joke that had nothing to do with racism and didn't realize the racist implications. Somebody should have noticed, for sure, but I don't think it was meant to be a racist joke.
At least it wasn't "Barack The Magic Negro." - NeoconBlues, on 02/20/2009, -5/+18Main Stream Media is making this a Race Issue. This is a distraction away from the Real Issues.Obama is bought and paid for by the Lobbyist !!!!!
- Frixionburne, on 02/20/2009, -2/+15WOW Joeyg you have some absolute comment gems in your history.
Some of my favorite:
"You don't know who Kanye West is? He has the number 1 album of the year. U must be from mars retard"
"ur racist, quit the kkk it's the 21st century Hitler"
"i think we do need more troops in Afganastan, are troops need backup. That's further evidence Obama is making the right decisions."
Awesome. Such a free thinker, I'm surprised more people don't share your same dimension of logic!
(is the /s necessary?) - scriptcoder, on 02/20/2009, -5/+18It's pulling the "race card" and not racism. These protesters are the product of an overly PC society.
- ftx437, on 02/20/2009, -2/+15How is this cartoon racist......it is by no means racist....the fact of the matter is, it's not even talking about obama. he's not the one who wrote the "stimulus" bill so in my opinion it's not even directed at him.
People now a days wouldn't even know true racism if it hit them in the face. You have people crying racism over every little damn thing whether it was truly racist or not..where was this outcry when they were these types of pics of bush, and those were directed at bush..
(i.e http://www.boltcomics.com/artwork/editorials/03-08 ...
http://www.toonpool.com/user/718/files/bush_chimp_ ... - AresDiggs, on 02/20/2009, -3/+16Get your logic off my digg!!
... but really i agree 100% - Fordi, on 02/20/2009, -7/+19Odd. I don't know how that cartoon can be seen as racist. Personally insulting to the intelligence of the Prez? Sure. They're saying that his stimulus bill looks as if a chimp wrote it. But racist?
Against who, chimps? Against black people? That only applies if you assert that black people look like chimps, which the cartoon didn't actually do: note that none of the features of the animal in the 'toon are modified to match those of Obama.
It's a badly laid out criticism of the bill and its author. It's not racist. - a2fan, on 02/20/2009, -3/+15Excellent logic. So on the other hand, maybe the cartoonist thought the stimulus was dumb, and wanted to convey a chimp wrote it... a simple misinterpretation leading to misunderstanding.
I really feel how a person interprets something can be far more telling than the message itself. If you perceive a racist attack in that cartoon, I'm betting you're repressing subconscious racist feelings, or an overly developed sensitivity leading to overcompensation. - Johnagain, on 02/20/2009, -2/+14How is this racist???? They insinuate that the monkey wrote the stimulus plan - They are calling Nancy Pelosi (The author of the plan) a monkey.
Wait a minute... maybe that IS racist... The post hates white women with power!!!
\sarcasm ...just in case you could not tell - jetboyterp, on 02/20/2009, -8/+20Oh, fer cripes sake...The whole point of that cartoon was to play off that chimp in Conn. that was shot. It certainly wasn't meant to be racist. Sharpton is just looking for some TV face time again. Creating faux outrage where there isn't any.
And Sharpie is pissed at that cartoonist anyway....you should see the way Sharpton is drawn haha - JCEEZ, on 02/20/2009, -0/+12I really have no idea what you are trying to say here.
- xadhominemx, on 02/20/2009, -7/+18I have to commend you for posting this well written response to Ryan's comment. However, you missed one important point- just because something can be (mis)interpreted as racist does not make it racist. An image is racist if its creator and publisher mean it to be racist. The cartoonist explicitly stated in the cartoon that the chimp was the authors of the bill! Just because Obama "comes to your mind" when you think about the bill, doesn't mean that the cartoonist is racist- especially in this case, where the cartoonist TOLD you what the cartoon was about IN THE ***** CARTOON!
