New Joint Chiefs Nominee: "This War Is Going To Go On For A Long Time"
thinkprogress.org — Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Peter Pace, the highest-ranking U.S. military official, is being replaced by Navy Adm. Mike Mullen. Here's Mullen in February: “The enemy now is basically evil and fundamentally hates everything we are... This war is going to go on for a long time. It’s a generational war."

Their reasoning for tapping Mullen was because they felt the their would be too much focus on Pace's past, but isn't that part of the confirmaation process?
- spinchange, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2I disagree. There may be management problems with the overall effort, but I don't even think that the congress would lay them at Pace's/The Military's door-step. I have the feeling that this is really about Pace not being a good enough "Parrot" for the administration. Remember...as bad as you might think they all are: Rumsfeld, the JSC, and the former Centcom Generals didn't agree or suggest this "surge" (they all suggested withdrawal of varying degrees, and were summarily fired)
This is more about having Generals that tell you what you *want* to hear, and if anything congressionally related, avoiding scrutiny for the surge, post ISG. The surge was the politicians' plan, not the generals.
