- toolboxnj, on 11/04/2009, -9/+68Bad news for Dem and Rep incumbents in 2010. Pols better listen that the people are upset with the way this country is run.
Look at approval for Congress from realclearpolitics.com
Congress
Approve: 24.8% Disapprove: 66.4% - SevenOhThree, on 11/04/2009, -19/+65Goodbye gay rights and Planned Parenthood...
- ftc08, on 11/04/2009, -15/+60Corzine was a pile of *****. This isn't surprising.
This can't be seen as a check on Obama or the democrats as a whole. New Jersey is its own state with its own big boy grown up issues. - Barackalypse, on 11/04/2009, -43/+83Looks like the Democrats in NJ just got tea-bagged.
- BREZZZ, on 11/04/2009, -3/+37First, I am a republican. I think Christie is better than Corzine and the people of NJ made the right choice, but it is not indicative of ANYTHING beyond the state of NJ. You would have to assume that the people voted entirely along party lines, which is wrong, but becomes completely absurd when you think that someone will vote for / against somebody to show their support for Obama. The kind of people who show up to vote for Governors know know they are voting for. Liberal and Conservative pundits played this up to be more than it is, the latter will continue, and the former will go into spin mode to the level of extreme hypocrisy (It would be vise versa if it happened the other way).
- anakast, on 11/04/2009, -5/+35Reporting something that has happened is hardly indicative of a 'digg takeover'.
- therealgeddylee, on 11/04/2009, -22/+48People in New Jersey are finally waking up. We're sick of unaffordable property taxes and big government! Congrats Governor-Elect Christie!
- goomba323, on 11/04/2009, -14/+39They were both horrible candidates. As jon stewart said last night on his show "Keep in mind...these is the best two candidates New Jersey has to offer..."
Obama's approval rating in New Jersey is above 60%/. Corzine's was below 25%. This isn't a referendum on Obama idiots, this a referendum on Corzine. - philliesphan026, on 11/04/2009, -6/+27As an NJ resident and someone who hates crazy conservatives as much as the next Digger, I have to say I voted for Christie today (I'm normally in favor of Dems, too) and am extremely happy Corzine is out. He was absolutely horrible.
- SevenOhThree, on 11/04/2009, -5/+26Gays should have the same rights as anyone else. Hell, tons of straight people make a mockery out of marriage every year by cheating on each other and getting divorces.
And while I'm personally completely against abortion, I think every woman should have the right to choose what she lets happen to her own body. - kooredaan, on 11/04/2009, -20/+40I think very few people outside of NJ area realize how much Crozine was disliked.
Christie winning has more to do with not wanting the incumbent in office then wanting a GOPer in there....
NY-23 looks like will go to a Dem. Now that is real news... The voters spoke that extreme GOP influence for conservative candidates isn't the way to go. - detcade, on 11/04/2009, -19/+39And sense.
- QQQQUUUU, on 11/04/2009, -10/+30Congratualtions Christe, Good Win!!
- AwesomeDeluxe, on 11/04/2009, -5/+24But Obama chose to put his own rep on the line when he flew in and got involved. He endorsed Corzine and his "Yes We Can 2.0" campaign, knowing it would put his image on the line. It was, as the New York Times calls it, "a tacit acknowledgment that a defeat for Mr. Corzine would be interpreted as a rebuke of the president, potentially affecting the president’s ability to pass major legislation and the public’s perceptions of the Democratic influence."
- SevenOhThree, on 11/04/2009, -8/+27I'm pretty sure "the world is flat" was one of his platforms.
- anakast, on 11/04/2009, -0/+19Um, its for 99% precincts reporting.
- jman491, on 11/04/2009, -8/+27A Republican in NJ? Hold on, I think hell just froze over.
- inactive, on 11/04/2009, -14/+32Wow, in New Jersey? That's trouble for the Dems.
- KibblesnBitts, on 11/04/2009, -8/+26As a New Jerseyan I want to say that this has nothing to do with the Dems in 2010. A lot of registered Democrats were not fans of Mr. Corzine, including myself. Christie won moreso because we didn't want the incumbent - who is most known for shutting the state down for a week back in 2006 and then raising sales tax - back in office for another four years.
I wasn't happy with either of them, but I did like Dagget - but his endorsement was too little, too late.
And as a person who almost canvassed for Corzine (Unemployed college student offered $10 an hour, why not?) - the entire platform was "Corzine and Obama are BFFs" - they had nothing else.
People did not vote via party lines - a lot of Democrats voted Christie out of disgust for Corzine. - bobburn1, on 11/04/2009, -10/+27Looks like they were looking for their own brand of Change.
- MaTT2011, on 11/04/2009, -0/+14use this next time: /s
It really helps. - Propethic, on 11/04/2009, -3/+17New Jerseyans wanted Corzine out
- kooredaan, on 11/04/2009, -2/+16But it didn't become split, so in your theory Hoffman should have gotten every Scozzafava vote once she dropped.
First time in what, '100 years', that NY-23 goes to a Dem? - MaTT2011, on 11/04/2009, -6/+19Obama was on the ballot(s) ?
Do you know how reality works? Or are you just ignoring that part entirely? - Denex, on 11/04/2009, -3/+16Shunning all political matters aside...
Someone actually named their kid Chris Christie? Seriously? - kaykfrink, on 11/04/2009, -10/+23Maybe you should wait until the NY-23 results are in before boasting of tea party momentum.
- bobburn1, on 11/04/2009, -8/+19Yeah, the neo-cons dragged this nation to hell with their "cut-tax and spend" policies. How about cut taxes AND spending..you know, like real fiscal conservatives.
- kooredaan, on 11/04/2009, -2/+13Hoffman being an extreme conservative, as the GOP 'rule' decided that the moderate Scozzafava wasn't worthy of their party - even though she was the GOP candidate fair and square.
- toolboxnj, on 11/04/2009, -0/+10Actually, looking at Union, Passaic, Hudson and Essex, Mercer, and Camden counties, Corzine couldn't break 70% in very urban areas such as Patterson, Newark, Orange, Harrison, Elizabeth, Trenton, Camden, etc. It shows that the support from blacks and youth that Obama got did not carry to Corzine. These are extremely Democratic areas that didn't turn out tonight.
This can carry over into 2010 where white, male congressmen have to go to urban areas and will lack the Obama wave they got in 2008. It's not partisan, just an observation. - perrym, on 11/04/2009, -4/+14wow, the leftist blogs (and digg) are furious about this.
what will they be like in 2010 when the nation swings back to the right? - krahzee, on 11/04/2009, -2/+12(Place Jim McGreevey Gay Joke Here)
- mulcher2, on 11/04/2009, -3/+13Digg. WHy not change your name to the 'Huffington Digg.' I mean, the Republicans kicking Dem's ass 1 year after god was elected only has like 170 diggs? Some picture of a rat in a car is 5 pages higher.
If this was the other way, this would be the #1 digg for a week. - detcade, on 11/04/2009, -15/+25Front page with 36 diggs... voter fraud!
- anakast, on 11/04/2009, -0/+9I'm not really that surprised to be honest. A breakdown of the votes:

Live polls:
http://elections.nytimes.com/2009/results/other.ht ... - kooredaan, on 11/04/2009, -0/+9Sometimes spin is actual fact. Have you seen Crozine's approval ratings across the board?
And NY-23 - since the Civil War.... That's a long time. - Solus89, on 11/04/2009, -3/+12Us New Jersey folk actually like Obama. His approval rating here is at 60%. We just ***** hated Corzine. Although Christie isn't much better of a candidate (I don't agree with his social views on pretty much any level).
I can't say enough how much everyone in NJ wanted Corzine gone. - elliotys, on 11/04/2009, -4/+13hey AwBoy666, you forgot the /s
- Jareth86, on 11/04/2009, -1/+9Spoiler: It will ;)
- ftc08, on 11/04/2009, -5/+12And Palin and Pawlenty campaigned for that goofy looking guy in New York. Even Fox isn't reporting that one.
- consonance, on 11/04/2009, -3/+10Trust me, the pot smoekrs already feel better.
- Jareth86, on 11/04/2009, -12/+19Not to rain on the tea party parade, but the dems just won NY. In an election they haven't won since the 1800s. Against a candidate that Palin, Limbaugh, Beck, and many others stumped like crazy for.
Just sayin. - akamurph, on 11/04/2009, -4/+11Sorry, I checked cnn.com tonight and the headline was "A big night for the GOP".
- Lonandubh, on 11/04/2009, -2/+9Actually, there is something to it; one of the big reasons the Dems won so many seats, and why Mr. Obama won by such a huge margin is that they weren't W. (despite the fact that if you actually look at it, neither was McCain. I may have to spot you Palin, though)
- detcade, on 11/04/2009, -3/+10THANK you. This election barely means anything for the so-called "tea party revolution". Now, if we look at /all/ the results:
http://elections.nytimes.com/2009/results/other.ht ... - kooredaan, on 11/04/2009, -4/+10People of NJ would have voted Dem if Corzine hadn't sought re-election and another Dem took his place....
We'll see how it goes when Christie comes up for re-election.... Who knows maybe he'll do a good job - but his string will be short. - akchrs, on 11/04/2009, -3/+9gee... 8:30 is real late.
- NightC, on 11/04/2009, -2/+8He got my vote, Corzine has been screwing us for decades.
- Dregganaut, on 11/04/2009, -3/+9"No controversial H1N1 vaccine for his family, but pushing it on the rest of the nation like it's do or die for the rest of us weaklings"
DERP
Obama's family did get the vaccine
Stop listening to liars - krahzee, on 11/04/2009, -0/+6With all of the politicians in the Democratic party getting busted in that corruption sting a few months ago is it any shock the voters of NJ elected a former U.S. Attorney whose office managed to win 130 convictions of corrupt politicians from both parties?
The fact that he was a Republican, didn't hurt, since everyone scooped up was a Dem. Not easy to see that fostering a "vote the corrupt Dems out" mentality. ( not trying to say all Dem are corrupt or all Reps are clean, they aren't)
Corzine's ads also hurt him more than they helped him. They seemed to go out of the way to attack Christie on a personal basis (thinly veiled shots at his weight, for example, that would have no impact on how he would conduct himself in office) crossed the line with voters from a fighting hard and tough to fighting dirty. - kaykfrink, on 11/04/2009, -5/+11What you are missing mustangmike is that the 23rd is one of the most consistent Republican strongholds in the nation (some parts of the 23rd have not elected a Democratic representative since the 1850s.) So if Owens manages to win, despite (or because of,) an extreme conservative campaign with support from all of the Republican heavy hitters, then a lot of people in and outside of the party are going to be wondering what the hell just happened.
The teabaggers may have won a couple of big elections, but if they can't defend their home turf then I'm not sure I would call that 'building momentum.' -
