- coolian, on 10/12/2007, -10/+100I bet this congressman will also come out of the closet in a couple of months.

make the sunni protestants and the shiites catholics and they will still kill each other. - areric, on 10/12/2007, -4/+40good to know we are waging a holy crusade, cause history looks fondly upon those days.

Not THAT is ironic!!! He missed the boat by 1400 years.
Quran Chapter 3:45:
"Lo! The angels said: "O Mary! Behold, God sends thee the glad tiding, through a word from Him, [of a son] who shall become known as the Christ Jesus, son of Mary, of great honour in this world and in the life to come, and [shall be] of those who are drawn near unto God."
Quran Chapter 5:116:
"And when God saith: O Jesus, son of Mary! Didst thou say unto mankind: Take me and my mother for two gods beside God? he saith: Be glorified! It was not mine to utter that to which I had no right. If I used to say it, then Thou knewest it. Thou knowest what is in my mind, and I know not what is in Thy mind. Lo! Thou, only Thou art the Knower of Things Hidden." - ricree, on 10/12/2007, -38/+67"Make the country atheist and it will be the most peaceful country on earth."
Just like the Soviet Union. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -17/+45Proof that Americans are idiots... don't they realise Jesus is a major prophet in Islam? And they believe virtually the same things?
- digginestdogg, on 10/12/2007, -11/+35The Soviet Union was not and never was atheist as evidenced by the proponderance of religon in Russia today. The government tried to force ahiesm on the ublic but it never took hold.
However, now that you mention it, the Soviet Union caused far fewer wars and killed far fewer peopel thant the Christian US: just take Vietnam for an example not even counting the Baltics and Iraq. And of course Nazi germany was Christian as well. So maybe atheists are more peaceful after all. - lombard, on 10/12/2007, -5/+24On behalf of sane North Carolina, I'd like to offer my apologies -- where are the Dixie Chicks when you need them . . .
- cdlavalle, on 10/12/2007, -3/+20Sounds good! I'll book his flight if he'll be the first missionary going door to door spreading the Good Word outside of the green zone! Praise be!
- Zappa, on 10/12/2007, -4/+20As long as they spread my version of Christianity and not yours we are all good.
- Gerz1219, on 10/12/2007, -7/+22@SkeletaLlama -- That's completely false. Historically, Islam has been among the most tolerant faiths, particularly during its initial period of military expansion. Conquered villages were given the option of converting to Islam, or retaining their faith and paying an extra tax; there was no physical compulsion to convert. When the Crusaders reached the Holy Land, there was a minority Jewish population that had been living there peacefully for centuries. The Crusaders herded them into the synagogue and burned them alive.
Present Islamic fundamentalism is a reaction against perceived Western cultural imperialism -- a relatively recent trend. It's ridiculous to say that Islam is inherently incompatible with other faiths, when in fact Muslims have been much more tolerant than Christians for most of the past millenium. - gaberowe, on 10/12/2007, -5/+20I bet it'll work as well as it did during the crusades. Man, and the republicans wonder why they are losing their jobs? come on people...
- wheremyarm, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17Are you retarded? (I say that lovingly) What about Norse paganism? Or Ancient Greek? Both kick the ***** out of any monotheism you can find.
- Gerz1219, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15That's an excellent point which is hardly discussed. Converting Muslims to Christianity is a lot more difficult than telling them how great Jesus is. They already know, because in the Islamic faith, Jesus is considered one of God's most loved prophets. Muhammed simply supercedes Jesus as the greatest prophet. If you want to convert Muslims to Christianity, you don't have to convince them of Christ's divinity, you have to convince them that Muhammed was just a sham act. But of course, since Islam is a newer religion, there's no scriptural basis for such an argument. And once you start trying to discredit unfalsifiable beliefs as fairy tales, it only serves to underline the shaky nature of Christianity itself.
- florin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12Right, replace a wacko religion with another. Great plan.
What transformed the Western world from a society of religious nutjobs, complete with the Inqusition and whatnot, was the age of reason. Unless the islamic countries have their own renaissance and age of reason, they will continue to behave in the same absurd way.
This guy has pretty much hit the nail on its head:

Unless we manage to leave dogma behind, we may not make it to the 22nd century. - SkeletaLlama, on 10/12/2007, -7/+18@digginestdogg
Actually, Russia murdered of 100 million people in the 20th century alone. America hasn't killed that many in all of its wars put together. They haven't even killed a fifth that many people. - losttoy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10FYI, Iraq does have a Christian minority that is close to 800,000 strong and the community is 2000 years old.

Ironically, they were well protected under Saddam Hussein but not anymore!! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11I guess our congressman believs it's "freedom of religion, as long as it's the right religion".
Interestingly enough, that's Saudi Arabia's attitude as well. - pbjorge12, on 10/12/2007, -6/+16JacNet...
South Park had a great episode about atheists and wars...
It's entitled Go God Go!! Parts 1+2 - satanatnmtedu, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12This is interesting because many Muslims have thought that one purpose (besides oil) was for Christians to destroy Islam. Way to go for an American in a position of power to confirm those fears by his words.
- AmishRefugee, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12oh hey, I love Inquisitions, we should have another one.... I can't think of one better way to suppress a violent group of people that don't like you than shoving your own religion down their throats.
What if someone suggested the same thing, but chose any other religion other than christianity? I'd like to see the reaction when a rep suggests that we convert all of the Iraqis to Buddhism or Hinduism etc. - blastin311, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11Funny we have freedom of religion here, but everyone wants to throw christianity on people in Iraq. Here's your freedom, now worship our God! Ass-backwards if you ask me.
- crysys, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10I'd be ok with buddhists, they usually only hurt themselves when pissed.
- kodak543, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Muhammad doesnt supersede Jesus as the "best" prophet. Muhammad is simply the last prophet, sent down to finish God's message. Jesus is actually considered more blessed (performed miracles) and we do believe he comes back later (not resurrected), and helps the Muslims create a united Islamic nation, and defend against two invading armies.
- kodak543, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8fyi Here's Islams view on the Trinity, and all that stuff
"Oh People of the Book! Commit no excesses in your religion, nor say of God anything but the truth. Christ Jesus, the son of Mary, was (no more than) a messenger of God, and His Word which He bestowed on Mary, and a spirit proceeding from Him. So believe in God and His messengers. Say not, 'Trinity.' Desist! It will be better for you, for God is One God, Glory be to Him! (Far exalted is He) above having a son. To Him belong all things in the heavens and on earth. And enough is God as a Disposer of affairs" ( Quran : 4:171).
Here's Islams view on Christianity, and Judaism as a whole:
"Surely those who believe, and those who are Jews, and the Christians, and the Sabians -- whoever believes in God and the Last Day and does good, they shall have their reward from their Lord. And there will be no fear for them, nor shall they grieve" (2:62, 5:69).
"...and nearest among them in love to the believers will you find those who say, 'We are Christians,' because amongst these are men devoted to learning and men who have renounced the world, and they are not arrogant" (5:82).
"O you who believe! Be helpers of God -- as Jesus the son of Mary said to the Disciples, 'Who will be my helpers in (the work of) God?' Said the disciples, 'We are God's helpers!' Then a portion of the Children of Israel believed, and a portion disbelieved. But We gave power to those who believed, against their enemies, and they became the ones that prevailed" (61:14). - nick111, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Yea - but that but at the beginning where the angels said ""Lol The angels said: "O Mary! Behold,"
The "lol" bit meand they weren't being serious. Later on there's a couple of WTF's and a LOT of OMGs - Ramble, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Do not worry about your sinning days. Soon his noodly appendage will touch you and you shall be blessed with bolognese goodness.
- sirloin, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10I dont understand why people havent figured out
christians and muslims are just jewish sects.
all worship the god of Abraham.
they simply disagree on the messanger. - Lynxpro, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8@anicejew
That's not technically correct. Islam treats Jesus (Issa) as a prophet but they do not believe he was the literal Son of God. They do believe he was born of a virgin though (like the cult of Mithra).
In the Islamic end-time, they believe Issa and the Islamic Messiah will team up against the forces of evil.
Point is, the two religions are not the same. Just as a Christian is not by default a Jew just because Christianity retained the "Old Testament" as part of its Bible. - Doug_E_Style, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10What is really sad is American Soldiers could die because this arrogant bible thumping ***** is pandering to his neocon constituents, meanwhile he is in-fact inciting extremest backlash in region.

Yes that's true.
Under Saddam Hussein - relative freedom to worship, so long as they didn't try & convert people to Christianity.
Americans come storming in - total chaos arises - No freedom to worship, except in secret... - sleze, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9Oh thou that tellest good Tidings to Zion, CRUSADE!

Sorry, thought we were naming random game engines... - dcbebop, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Where do these radical Christian morons come from? Is there a factory or something in the mid-west that is mass producing them?
I definitely consider myself an atheist and am constantly bothered by Christian mentialiy, but I'd prefer to just let people make up their own minds about what they believe and what they need to be content in life. But I do have to say that this guy makes all Christians look collectively like a pack of morons.
Where are the sane, Christian majority leaders? I know they're out there. THOSE should be the ones who are empowered with law and war making responsibilities.
Oh, and NC: Why didn you elect this guy again? - blastin311, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Send this bible thumper into Iraq to "spread the word". We could bet on how long he lives. I give him half a day.
- bostonnick, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5That's what's wrong with America. We live in a country where "I can choose to believe what want," but obviously the country is ran by Christians. But religion will def. end all wars. Just imagine, with religion, no Holocaust, no crusades. No wars against the jaws, or in Darfur. Come on religion, bring us peace. Anyone who believes that Jesus will stop that war, might as well believe in Santa or the flying spaghetti monster. What a load.

"My God has a bigger dick than your god" - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7He does, however, represent many North Carolinians and for that reason he can't be dismissed as a kook. Most of the Christians I know would agree with him as well.

You have exactly the right idea.
When people discard totalitarian religions, they way they have discarded totalitarian political systems, THAT is when peace will break out. - michaelb1, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Oh My Flying Spaghetti Monster.
This is the fatal flaw of America right now. These voters and politicians that
believe that if only people would forsake their religion and be Christian everything would be perfect.
i wish i could freeze myself like Cartman and wake up in 100 years when all this nonsense is gone.
Sometimes it feels like we are living in primitive times.
We have digg and all these gadgets yet our fellow Americans still believe that somewhere up there is a white fluffy place with pearly gates and a white guy with flowing hair and kind eyes that listens to them when the talk to him in their heads.
Its just weird man. - JacNet, on 10/12/2007, -51/+55No, religion will cause more wars, religion caused nearly every war.

Good point. Problem is that the most crooked people right now are Bush and Cheney. Christians, no?
Maybe we should start voting for people based on their QUALIFICATIONS and not their RELIGION. -
