- n00854180t, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11Idiot Diebold schills modding everyone down. Pathetic. Go grow a brain, you losers.
- Dipsomaniac, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10@rebrad:
I see that your desire for a fair and secure voting system is as fervent as Diebold's - that is to say, not at all. - Dipsomaniac, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10I'll say it - Diebold is directly involved in fraud. When they know that there are definite and confirmed security holes in their voting machines and they refuse to fix them, that is aiding fraud.
- VolatileWhimsy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9I'm conservative and want the damn machines out... It has nothing to do with political parties you dork...
- wurzelgummage, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Maybe they got confused, and were talking about their voting machines?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10All I have to say (not for childrens' eyes):
***** DIEBOLD! - gmillerd, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7I cannot believe someone could ***** up such an awesome opportunity to dominate a new market. How many chances do you get to have that opportunity? They push to get their products to be required to be used by federal mandate. And then then drop the ball. Not just Diebold, there are plenty of these *****.
Yes its a tough programatic problem (as people have speced out the process for an ideal system and its quite intesive), but nothing that isn't done almost every day in business.
Its business ***** like this that make 'lowering green house emissions will ruin us financially' because its businesses like this (and their supporters) that have no vision. - totorototoro, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7" Diebold, has dismissed the ESI reports as "severely flawed".
Sounds like more than the reports are "severely flawed." - TimDigg, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7I'm not going to sit here and say that Diebold is involved in fraud
but I will say that I'm very suspicious of the fact that they haven't come out and OUTRIGHT denied claims and even made public strides to try and prove integrity and security in their products... - allatti2d, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6We had a computer at home before there was such a thing as a "PC." I grew up with the damn things, built one myself when I was 7 (around 1974). I can tell you from both a hardware and software perspective, it's not much better now than it was 30 years ago. The things still break. People still don't know how to work them right. Glitches happen. GARBAGE IN, GARBAGE OUT.
We've all been to the grocery store when the register tape has jammed. We've all had printers do the same thing. Something as important as elections (especially the upcoming elections) should not depend on computers that will be screwed with. Having an electronic count is good, but having the general public use the machines to vote and having no dependable paper trail and having non-programmers running the voting machines spells nothing but disaster.
You can count on it, and probably the ones who want to stay in office want to count on it too. - WarpFox, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8we're all ***** now, the republicans have control and intend to keep it- and they have the power to do that. Now just wait for the government to be purchased by Tri-Optimum corporation.

"The machine manufacturer, Diebold Election Systems, has dismissed the ESI report as "severely flawed" and says the company stands by its equipment."

I'm sure I read somewhere that Diebold is owned by Halliburton... - wurzelgummage, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6November 5, 2004

To The Secretary of State of New Hampshire:
The Nader/Camejo campaign requests a hand recount of the ballots in the presidential election in New Hampshire. Numerous voting rights activists have requested that we seek a recount of this vote.
We have received reports of irregularities in the vote reported on the AccuVote Diebold Machines in comparison to exit polls and trends in voting in New Hampshire. These irregularities favor President George W. Bush by 5% to 15% over what was expected. Problems in these electronic voting machines and optical scanners are being reported in machines in a variety of states.
We are requesting that the state undertake this recount or a statistically significant sample audit of these vote counts.
We would like to make sure every vote counts and is counted accurately.
Sincerely,
Ralph Nader - Shabadoo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Of course they'd say the study was flawed. They have another election to fix in a couple of months.
- tomboy501, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I agree. They should be going out of their way to nail down every last detail so things run smoothly. Public confidence in these machines (and Diebold the company, for that matter) is so low already and they don't seem to care to make any effort to build our trust at all. Worse, these flawed machines keep being used in real elections with obvious bugs that haven't been worked out.
- TimDigg, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I honestly think the way to do it is....
1. Vote at an electronic machine
2. The electronic machine spits out two receipts
3. The voter then compares the receipts with what they put in the electronic machine
4. The voter then takes one receipt and puts it into a box and keeps the other receipt
5. The results from the box are compared with the results from the machine
Not exactly ironclad, but its a far better way of handling this than what is currently being done - wurzelgummage, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4"The result of one race was reversed. For two warrant articles the recount changed the result. Results were also changed in the other two towns."
http://www.democracyfornewhampshire.com/node/view/2263 - Dipsomaniac, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Well, when the head of Diebold is on record as saying that he's going to make sure that Ohio's electoral votes go to Bush (he said that in the last election) then any suspicious or weird results in Ohio should be looked at even more closely than in other places.
- VolatileWhimsy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Sorry but saying that the ppl in office are relying on it to not work does not make much sense.. If the thing is faulty its faulty and could go either way... It doesn't say.. Hey look that person is in office so I'm putting them back in.....
But you are completely correct on having ppl trained correctly to handle the machine and not someones neice that got hired.. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3The think about previous "paper records" is that the votes were put on paper, but not so that voters could verify what was printed. You might vote for one person but the machine and paper say another thing and you are none-the-wiser.
- ChuckDickens, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1http://digg.com/politics/Video_demonstration_of_Diebold_voting_machine_hack
This just came out in the past day or so. Some guys at Princeton University figured out how to insert a virus by way of a memory card into Diebold AccuVote-TS machines. The virus steals votes and then deletes itself. They were able to pick the lock and swap the memory cards in about a minute.
Complete and summarized technical write-ups at Princeton's IT Policy page: http://itpolicy.princeton.edu/voting/ - tehnico, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'd be interested in finding out what percentage of hand marked ballots are uncountable. Due to voter idiocy/spoiling. I'm sure there's numbers somewhere.
Which raises another point. For those who protest elections by spoiling ballots, what form does their protest take with electronic machines? - VolatileWhimsy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Sigh, now I am going bashing the gov.. the reason why we will be stuck with diebold regardless is because I'm sure our government being the frigging morons they are about contracts signed one with this one..
Would like to point out, I said about contracts and nothing else.. :P - H380, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I am not defending Bush. I am just trying to point out something I see as political. It is being passed off as news. Hell I live in Louisiana. I am only 60 miles from New Orleans. I know about vote rigging. I live it. Look at New Orleans. How many people died because some ***** is in office and does not have a clue? Hell the Governor is just now giving out the FED money to home owners. She wanted all the money to go through the Governors office. Why? She is up for reelection this year. It makes me F-ING sick. Yes she is a DEM. So what still an *****. It is all politics.
- H380, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Check out the list of articles on Google News. Search for "Diebold voting machines".
99% of the sites or writers are what "I" might call left leaning or at least not neutral. It looks like an organized Internet push to discredit the up coming elections that might be close important races. The big media boys will be jumping on the band wagon soon. Sure Diebold might have problems. I do not think it is a scam to take over the world. But it will not end with Diebold. Mark my words. It will be other makers next. A lot of people hate Bush. It just takes political operatives to get the ball rolling. Last, honestly NPR is as far left as Fox News is to the right. Again my opinion. - allatti2d, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2H380 --
I respect your opinion. It may very well be political, which is why I quipped about Diebold being owned by Halliburton. But my point was that I believe the machines in Ohio are being talked about because that county has a new system, along with a few others. Not positive about it, but fairly certain. The fact that it's being reported by PBS doesn't make it any more political than the fact that it's in an Ohio county. I've seen this reported in other media as well.
Dugg you up for having good discussion. I appreciate that. I won't digg anyone down simply because they disagree; I love having good discussions with people. There are enough ***** in the world. - allatti2d, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2You know, after reading the article and all the comments here and looking at the link posted by wurzelgummage above about New Hampshire, I wonder why county and state officials are spending millions on these new computerized voting gadgets.
There are better, less expensive, less questionable ways... I saw a very good suggestion here by TimDigg. Why spend millions on a proprietary company that refuses to look at independent reports that have found obvious problems??
I think we should start writing to our elected officials (yuck, I sound like a commercial now) to STOP wasting money on companies like Diebold and start looking for better solutions. - allatti2d, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2oxymoron --
Where are you? Canada?
We already have an emperor here. His name is GWBush. And apparently no one speaks up about the fact that he's not wearing any clothes. (Hopefully you've read that story so you understand my reference!) He himself has said "It would be much easier if I were a Dictator," loosely quoted. He has also said, "I'm the Decider." He continually has tantrums about getting permission from Congress to do things he wants to do, and has gotten himself into trouble for being The Decider without getting permission.
Believe me, I am an equal-opportunity President blasphemer. I've been disgusted with the Republican cult/party for a long time, and a few years ago I became even more disgusted with the Democrat cult/party. I'm sure if another party rose to a more equal economic level, they would become just as corrupt. Who cares what the American people want? It's the Cult/Party First, American citizens last. I stopped voting for parties and started voting for people a while back. The people in power here have become so corrupt and power-hungry (or puppets, like the brainless Bush) that we're on the verge of becoming something else, as you say -- perhaps a dictatorship or something like it.
For the last 2 years I've been researching other countries to immigrate to with my family. Canada is looking better and better to me. Maybe I should start learning French soon. I've always loved America, but it's gone down the toilet fast, and I don't know if it will ever recover and become a country who does good, rather than one that tries to shove itself down the throats of other countries. - kakapu4u, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Yeah no kidding... This is playground style.
Officials: Diebold machines are flawed.
Diebold: You're flawed.
What's next? Them saying each other's mothers are flawed? - VolatileWhimsy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Thats ok, I mod you back up :p
But I didn't think of that... That the only state so far complaining is the dem one where they are losing.. :/
but the machines do need to go :/ - allatti2d, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1H380 --
I disagree. I think GWBush is a complete idiot (and when I say idiot, I mean he's got a low IQ and makes dumb decisions, not saying idiot in a derogatory way), but I would raise a stink if any balloting were off in any direction. If people want to vote an idiot into office, no matter what cult/party they're part of, it's their democratic right inherent to our country.
I think this particular county in Ohio is one of just a few where they're trying out the new system. Wouldn't it bother you if there was a terrible problem with voting machines in your state, no matter what its "color"? I know I would!! - oxymoron69, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1That would be nice, but an open-source electronic voting machine would be derided by politicians as a commie solution to severly flawed criticism and reports that are calling into question the Infallable Diebold Electronic voting automatron.
If someone isn't getting massive kickbacks then the usa .gov seems to be highly uninterested in looking into alternatives. Im sure your police state will be fully intact throught the next election, just be aware that when the vice chancellor changes the rules he will become the emperor. Does anyone see shades of that story line in USA politics? I really fear for you folks, like really, I so could see cheney becoming the new pres and somehow removing the 2 term limit and being your dictator for years to come.
Best of luck in your next elections USA!
we have lots of room up here if you need refuge ;-] - H380, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3Why is this in Ohio? Could it be a state the DEMS could carry this election cycle? Why not Chicago or Boston with voting machine problems? This is called pretext. When a DEM loses or is in a close race in Ohio they will be screaming "IT'S RIGGED. We have said this for months. It's BUSH". They do not need to worry about the "BLUE" states. They are trying to throw "STINK" on the borderline "RED" states. I mean this is NPR. Not many right wing types there. OK mod me down now. Thanks :)
- geekee, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2"And in Ohio, that's a big problem: The paper ballot is the official ballot if there's a recount."
Why would they want to believe the paper on a recount? The electronic count would be more accurate. If there is a discrepancy, you should figure out why, not just assume the paper count is the correct one. What if someone stuffs extra paper ballots into the box, but doesn't touch the electronic machines? - rebrad, on 10/12/2007, -22/+1More ***** propaganda. Digg has opened itself up to paid democrat operatives to spread their lies and venom anywhere it can. Especially sites that are easily manipulated as Digg is.
I can't wait till the election in November is over. We might have some respite in this crap for a month or so before they start again. Oh wait, these same operatives will be whining about about how the elections were rigged and that they really won.
Get Digg out of politics. This article is a waste of bandwidth.
