- fleischner, on 06/01/2009, -32/+94Instead of oblique comments like the above, how about addressing the accusation instead? It happens to be 100% true, no matter how you spin it. If a white Republican were a member of a right-wing equivalent of La Raza, the scorched-earth reaction from the Dems would be swift and decisive, and he wouldn't stand a chance in hell. Just look at how the Dems treated the majority of Bush's nominees -- like pariah, with *ridiculous* accusations of racism and other kinds of personal attacks with no foundation. Damn right she's a racist.
La Raza ("The Race") with their motto "All for the race. Nothing for the rest." - inactive, on 06/01/2009, -31/+88You know what's racist? This country's drug policy, which disproportionately punishes African-Americans and other low-income people of color.
You know who vowed, once elected leader of the executive branch, to declare amnesty to all non-violent drug offenders in prison (including over 200,000 African-American men)? An old, cranky evolution-denying 73-year-old white Republican from Texas. You know who won't declare amnesty anytime soon? The black guy in the white house.
Get past the packaging, people. It's the policies behind the faces that matter. - curtisag, on 06/01/2009, -22/+72What is the definition of racist?
Racist: a belief or doctrine that inherent differences among the various human races determine cultural or individual achievement, usually involving the idea that one's own race is superior and has the right to rule others.
Her statements clearly indicate she believes her ethnicity has some sort of superiority in decision making ability compared to white people. The "richness of her experiences" seems to imply that a Latina's experiences are richer than a white person is capable of experiencing, therefore Latina > white.
It's pretty clear she's racist, game over. - mollydog12, on 06/01/2009, -26/+53why should he, or anyone, condemn what they said. it's true. even a wise latina from the projects couldn't read her words and think otherwise.
- ptheroux, on 06/02/2009, -13/+39"I would hope that a wise Latina woman with the richness of her experiences would more often than not reach a better conclusion than a white male who hasn't lived that life."
If that's not a racist statement, I don't know what is. - TCSavant, on 06/01/2009, -22/+47So is HuffPo angry that Republicans have diverse opinions, or that they believe that everyone is free to speak his or her mind?
- Shiloah, on 06/01/2009, -8/+33So very true. The drug policy laws (marijuana tax act) were created for the purpose of selectively controlling certain segments of the population, and they have been used mainly against people of color. First enforcement was against the Latino population in the Southwest. Then African-Americans everywhere. Later on, hippies were targeted, and youth generally. But mainly African-Americans. Drug policy has always been mostly about color.
- kinerry, on 06/02/2009, -16/+40Being that it WAS a racist statement, he is doing the politically and morally correct thing
- inactive, on 06/02/2009, -18/+37Would HuffPo defend Justice Roberts if he had made a speech saying "I would hope that a wise white man with the richness of his experiences would more often than not reach a better conclusion than a latina woman who hasn’t lived that life?"
- RonPauls, on 06/02/2009, -17/+34People who aren't white can't be racist.
Jesse Jackson told me. - inactive, on 06/01/2009, -36/+52Sorry, Huffers, Mitch is not Limbaugh. He is not Newt. He is responsible for his own words and he is not responsible for saying bad things about other people's views that he may or may not agree with. Grow up.
- irvman21, on 06/02/2009, -9/+24Why would he? If a white male who was nominated for the Supreme Court made a similar comment there would be crowds marching in the street calling him a racist while vilifying the president for nominating him. The reaction of conservatives has been moderate compared to what it would be if the situation were reversed. Even if she's not a racist, she deserves to take heat for making what is undoubtedly a racist comment.
- kemp34, on 06/01/2009, -4/+19It's primarily about CONTROL and the control has quite often been aimed at aggrieved individuals with often darker complexions. It is telling to witness Obama not push more to clean up the CLEARLY RIDICULOUS federal government drug control policy.
- kimbermatic, on 06/02/2009, -4/+19What would be nice is a nominee that just rules on a strict interpretation of the constitution. Race should not even be considered or promoted.
- neilk85, on 06/02/2009, -1/+16i did read her "white male statement" in context and she could have EASILY said a Latino Woman would reach "A DIFFERENT" conclusion than a white male but instead she specifically used the word "BETTER".
Who is she to say that a person of one race would reach a "better" conclusion than a person of another race??? Who's to even say what the "better decision" is. - badqat, on 06/01/2009, -21/+35Mitch is a tool. And one of my senators, unfortunately.
That being said, I seem to recall similar arguments being made about Obama not "condemning controversial comments made" by his pastor...and those, just like this one, are complete crap. - lordmike, on 06/02/2009, -11/+25Alberto Gonzalez, Bush's Attorney General, is an active member of La Raza.
Where's the outrage from the GOP?
***crickets*** - nepidae, on 06/02/2009, -1/+15As much as I don't think its racism (and I think she is a good nominee), its hard to deny that if it hadn't been white males she was talking about the uproar would be completely different.
- zelig, on 06/02/2009, -7/+20I call *****.
The La Raza organization welcomed Gonzalez' nomination. That was the story. Gonzalez himself has never been a member of La Raza.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alberto_Gonzalez - Ferretman, on 06/02/2009, -17/+29She may or may not be racist, but her comment certainly was.
If a white guy had said anything similar the Ling-nuts (Left wing-nuts) would be screaming at the moon.
Buried for gross inaccuracy. - TheInformer, on 06/02/2009, -2/+14McConnell should condemn Limbaugh and Gingrich the minute the Obama Justice Department prosecutes the Blank Panther members that were videotaped intimidating people at polling places this past November.
Like that's going to happen LOL. - cubicledrone, on 06/02/2009, -1/+12All we do in this country is throw ***** on television while our factories close and our neighborhoods are boarded up.
What a shameful place this country has become. - curtisag, on 06/01/2009, -13/+24The translation is, we need to get all the old white farts out of the court system since we disagree and wish to use the court as a platform to legislate that which we cannot gain popular support for in congress. This type of thinking shows zero respect for the constitution and it's one reason, as a Libertarian, I can never consider voting Democratic in a two party race even though Republicans have been completely taken over by religious fundamentalists and neocons. It's a sad system we have.
- AlyxVance, on 06/02/2009, -19/+28She's the racist one
- neilk85, on 06/02/2009, -2/+11i did read it in context and she could have EASILY said a Latino Woman would reach "A DIFFERENT" conclusion than a white male but instead she used "BETTER".
Who is she to say that a person of one race would reach a "better" conclusion than a person of another race??? Who's to even say what the "better decision" is. - TsuruchiBrian, on 06/02/2009, -1/+9Law enforcement is very selective about when and where they decide to try to "catch" drug users.
Half the people at a Dave Matthews concert (mostly white people), could probably be arrested for marijuana possession.
The police could get about 10,000 dangerous potheads off the street in one fell swoop. Why don't they? Every police officer at a Dave Matthews concert knows there is marijuana being used. You can smell it everywhere. If marijuana is so bad, why is this kind of stuff tolerated?
I don't think our policemen are racist. I don't even necessarily think our laws are racist. But the way the laws are enforced is putting a lot more poor black people in jail than affluent white people (percentage wise), despite there being a somewhat comparable percentage of affluent white people who smoke marijuana.
In the end, I don't even think racism is the real reason to legalize marijuana. I think we should legalize all drugs, because you as a human being should have the right to decide what you want to put into your own body, even if it is bad for you. This is The United States of America, and it is supposed to be a country that values personal freedom. - yeahwhatever58, on 06/02/2009, -3/+11It's funny. When Limbaugh made a statement about not wanting the president to succeed....everyone was all over him for it. They didn't bother to read his whole statement and comments. He was taken out of context. Now if you are one who was all over him for that, then you have no right to make the statement you just did.

have some more kool aid. - Ferretman, on 06/02/2009, -5/+11Actually no....YOU are the moron, AoM. By posting you merely make it public knowledge.
You really need to know your facts better.
It's that simple. - akchrs, on 06/02/2009, -22/+28She's a racist. Obama should withdraw the nomination and move on. It's that simple.
- lordmike, on 06/02/2009, -7/+13"I call *****. "
You're half right... He worked for one of La Raza's affiliates:
http://www.newswithviews.com/NWVexclusive/exclusiv ...
The National Council of La Raza, meaning "the race" (NCLR) and the National Association of Hispanic Publications (NAHP) have announced their endorsement for White House Counsel Alberto Gonzales to succeed current Attorney General John Ashcroft who announced his departure earlier this month. This nomination may run into some stumbling blocks. Alberto Gonzales served on the Board of Directors of one of La Raza's affiliates, the Association for the Advancement of Mexican Americans (AAMA) in Houston. - inactive, on 06/01/2009, -7/+13the case demonstrates that in ACTION she is not a racist.Much better than an out of context COMMENT demonstrates that she is.That is what it has to do with the post.if you had read it you would know that.
Spout rhetoric much? - SpinningHead, on 06/02/2009, -1/+7Except the penalty for inner-city crack is 10xs that for cocaine that gets snorted in the penthouse. Thanks, Reagan.
- UTKEngineer, on 06/02/2009, -0/+6Ihbaker - NO!!! Absolutely not! I'm pretty sure most people here think she's a closeted racist, not a card carrying one.
Better now? - Insightful, on 06/02/2009, -11/+17Apparently, the current Supreme Court Justices all judge from genderless, colorness backgrounds?
"When I get a case about discrimination, I have to think about people in my own family who suffered discrimination because of their ethnic background or because of religion or because of gender. And I do take that into account." - Samuel Alito
"I bring to the court the perspective of a woman primarily in a sense that I am female, just as I am white, a college graduate, etc." - Sandra Day O'Connor
The fact is that every judge brings his and her experience to the court - to think otherwise is retarded. Republicans are really objecting to not what was said but who said it - a person nominated by a Democratic President. - TheInformer, on 06/02/2009, -9/+15The truth doesn't matter. Sotomayor's recorded comments don't mean anything. Those rascally Repubwicans must have altered the audio.
The facts don't matter. When Clarence Thomas was nominated, the Democrats spewed racial comments and no one ever asked them to apologize for said comments. If it's good enough for the Democrats to do, then it's good enough for the Republicans don't ya think? - zelig, on 06/02/2009, -4/+10I'm white. I was dirt poor. I suffered. Get over yourself.
- LouisCipher777, on 06/01/2009, -10/+16nice comment but wrong case.
- inactive, on 06/02/2009, -1/+6Ron to the Paul, samk. Ron to the Paul.
- novenator, on 06/01/2009, -22/+27If McConnell dared say anything bad about Limbaugh, he would have to apologize within 48 hours
That's what happens when you cross the godfather of the GOP - Fortuna, on 06/02/2009, -6/+11Racism exists. Now I wish that people would quit assuming that all white people are wealthy and hire mexicans to do their housekeeping and lawn mowing. I feel like that too constitutes unfair profiling. Not that I would mind being one of those people I get lumped in with.
- lordmike, on 06/02/2009, -6/+11Did you actually read the whole speech, or just the little snippet that Fox News told you? She was referring to immigration casework, where that comment makes absolutely perfect sense. Even prominent conservatives (like in the National Review) have stated that her comments have been taken out of proportion.
- Insightful, on 06/02/2009, -3/+8Clarence Thomas was picked to replace Justice Thurgood Marshall - a Supreme Court legend and a liberal lion.
Thomas clearly was no intellectual nor legal match to Marshall. In addition, the Bush White House contained no white nominees - where was the outrage? - SpinningHead, on 06/02/2009, -2/+6Oh, citation please.
I guess Bush Sr. must have missed that when he nominated her to the bench. - LouisCipher777, on 06/02/2009, -0/+4for all of you who think La Raza is not a racist group, maybe you should consider their motto; "For La Raza todo. Fuera de La Raza nada," (All for The Race, nothing for the rest)
- siszam, on 06/02/2009, -2/+6Oh, many of us liberals are screaming. We're just being buried by people so politically correct and blind they think Hispanic racists are more acceptable than white racists.
- ohplease, on 06/02/2009, -0/+4She is a racist, no doubt about it. If you think your race inherently gives you better judgement than someone of a different race then you are a ***** racist. And if you're chummy with the Aztlan Chicano nationalists you're a traitor as well.
- austroLogi, on 06/02/2009, -16/+20She makes a racist comment, Mitch and republicans get attack
Screw you ***** libs - SpinningHead, on 06/02/2009, -2/+6Thats because Rush didn't tell them to be outraged. I love that Obama said this was the first time he had heard the word "empathy" used as an epithet.
