Michigan Senate Passes Ban on Smoking
inkslwc.wordpress.com — On Thursday, May 8th, the Michigan Senate voted on House Bill 4163, sponsored by Brenda Clack (D-Flint). I first brought you a story on the smoking ban back in December. The bill, entitled, “Public health code” would ban smoking in restaurants, bars, and casinos. The Senate version of the bill, sponsored by my Senator, Ray Basham...

- SheilaNoya, on 05/19/2008, -0/+1Indoor smoking in public facilities has been banned in California for a long time now. It was a pain in the ass at first, but it had some hidden benefits too which were totally unrelated to health issues.
- Lots of restaurants opened up new outdoor patios and/or rooftop dining (where it's still OK to smoke). Many bars opened up outdoor areas where you could drink under the stars and still enjoy a cigarette. With our normally beautiful weather, this was a good thing.
- It also made it easier to find all of those hidden nightspots in and near downtown Los Angeles. We have a lot of great clubs with no signage, just a blank door on an industrial looking building. Most people would never know there was a great nightclub inside. Now you can easily spot some of these places just by seeing the crowd standing outside to have a cigarette.
I guess those are lame reasons for liking the smoking ban, but it did have some unintentional consequences that I like! - pbd1637, on 05/19/2008, -0/+1If I own a business, it is not the governments responsibility to say who can do what in my business. This is a tiny bit of freedom being taken away one state and even one town at a time. This should be decided by the market. If a restaurant can make more money by being smoke free, the owner of the restaurant can ban it, but not the government. Why can't I open a private club for smokers. Non-smokers don't have to come in, and I don't want them to.
Be careful, they will ban smoking in your own home, and then they will ban eating fat in your own home. What else will they ban once they decide it is bad for you?
Also, do you think Michigan can even come close to balancing their budget with the sales tax from cigarettes? Hypocrites. - DaDrake, on 05/19/2008, -1/+1Apparently the Michigan consumer is too stupid to bring their business to non-smoking establishments..... and the businesses are too stupid to understand what your consumer desires.
