- porplem, on 01/31/2009, -8/+82It's official: Black is in!
- niradg, on 01/31/2009, -7/+74from "Oh Brother Where Art Thou"
Junior O'Daniel: "We could hire us a little fella, even smaller than Stokes's."
Pappy O'Daniel: "You slump-shouldered sack of nuts! Why, we'd look like a bunch of Johnny-come-lateleys, bragging on our own midget, don't matter how stumpy." - jsdratm, on 01/31/2009, -8/+63The cynical person I am wants to think that this is like the Palin pick. Considering that the Republicans have no minorities in Congress and Obama just got elected by a large margin, the timing is a little strange. Remember the RNC convention where minorities were nowhere to be seen? Its like the GOP is trying to be "hip" like the democrats. First they choose a woman to see if that works, now they choose a black guy to see if that works. If they run this guy with Palin in 2012 it will be ridiculous.

- niradg, on 01/31/2009, -4/+47Michael Steele on gun control:
Q: Should people have access to buy assault weapons?
A: Society should draw lines. What do you need an assault weapon for, if you're going hunting? That's overkill.
http://www.ontheissues.org/Domestic/Michael_Steele ... - twiztidsinz, on 01/31/2009, -24/+66"HEY LOOK! We got a black guy too!!"
- NoLibertarians, on 01/31/2009, -28/+69There is a very very tiny fringe group within the Republican party that will not be happy an African American was chosen. Fortunately they are a group the party basically ignores.
- vault, on 01/30/2009, -4/+38FTA: "Republicans have repeatedly expressed concern over the future of their party in the wake of Barack Obama's victory in the presidential race, with some suggesting the party has to find ways to reach out to voters who do not traditionally gravitate toward the GOP."
Not sure if his win will make that happen just by itself. They were saying on the news before that school choice/school vouchers would be one major way to accomplish it...not sure how realistic that campaign promise would be, though. - WoWii, on 01/31/2009, -9/+39Pretending to be apart of the black community wont get you votes.
- vault, on 01/30/2009, -4/+26Was he an attorney general? I don't see Michael Steele listed http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Attorney_general_of_m ...
- mfc5200, on 01/31/2009, -6/+28Not only that, I remember during one of the Republican debates, this guy just went off on Ron Paul in the post debate analysis.
"This guy doesn't know whats hes talking about, hes way out there, and absolutely wrong" This was in response to Ron Paul saying terrorists in fact don't hate us because we are "free" but because we've been interfering in their region of the world for 60 years.
***** this guy. I want a libertarian-Republican. Not a, lets face it, black neo-con who holds the same principles as the rest of the corrupt party but who just happens to be black in order to attract minorities to the party. Give me a break, how stupid do they think people are? - inactive, on 01/31/2009, -22/+44The GOP is grasping for straws. This is prime time for a third party to get into the mix. The real conservatives should split away from the GOP and start their own party. The GOP has become a joke.
- inactive, on 01/30/2009, -13/+32Wow, and I really thought it would be Duncan or Dawson.
Talk about a dark horse candidate... - Murrabbit, on 01/31/2009, -2/+21Haha because he's black! I get it.
- Whackly, on 01/31/2009, -2/+21Prominent republicans left and right are starting to say things like "We need to return to our ideals of lower taxes, strong defense, small government, and less government interference in public lives." Sounds to me like a coded F.U. to the religious right. If the republicans kicked the anti-gay, anti-abortion, anti-intellectual religious right to the curb... well.. I might actually consider voting for one!
- shutaro, on 01/31/2009, -2/+20*rimshot*
- franklymister, on 01/31/2009, -5/+23That doesn't even make any sense.
- alanocu, on 01/31/2009, -23/+41It would be more interesting if liberal democrats were interested in the black voter, instead of the black vote.
- inactive, on 01/30/2009, -6/+23You have failed at humor. Reported for comment spamming.
http://digg.com/users/spillspill - VogonPoet, on 01/31/2009, -1/+18You did see where Republican rep Phil Gingrey stated that he thought that Rush Limbaugh should tone done his rhetoric, only to recant and call Rush the heart of the Republican party less than 48 hrs later, right? Since Rush speaks for the Republican party I don't see them moving to the center anytime soon.
- mattbrundage, on 01/31/2009, -3/+18Gwen Ifill devotes an entire chapter of her book "The Breakthrough: Politics and Race in the Age of Obama" to Michael Steele and his recent political successes. Just kidding.
- gilbes, on 01/31/2009, -24/+39At least the Republican party is being transparent in their choices lately. First Palin and now Steele.
I'm not accusing them of being sexist, racist, affirmative-actionist (if that is even possible for a Republican). But there is a very distinct pattern to the politics of their choices.
I don't care either way, it has just been a wild ride to witness the GOPs implosion. - dchilds13, on 01/31/2009, -18/+33Ok, speaking on behalf of liberals, I can tell Republicans are obviously self-conscious because they're already complaining about liberals bashing Steele...BEFORE ANY LIBERAL HAS DONE SO...
Someone saying "it's ironic that an old and faded party desperately picks a black guy to revamp the party after losing to a black guy in '08" is not racist, crazy, or unnecessarily prodding. It's just a simple observation that rather than change the policies which are blatantly being dismissed by newer generations, they just stick in new people to look "cool", despite the policies and beliefs still being stuck in a previous era... - robdazomba, on 01/31/2009, -14/+28The problem with liberals is that they eat babies for breakfast and run over nuns and orphans with riding lawnmowers for fun. On top of that, they stomp on flowers and kick puppies and kittens in the head. Also they drink human blood.
That's why I hate liberals. I could never abide by those baby-eating, nun-mowing, flower-stomping, puppy-kicking, blood-sipping bastards.
And as bad as all that is, you know what the worst thing about liberals is? They never try to understand those who oppose them politically and instead just prop up stereotypes and exaggerations to stoke the hatred from their side. That has to be the worst part. - boydrew, on 01/31/2009, -5/+18much like the democrats needed to change their platform and identity after carter (moving to a more central stance rather than even more left leaning--see Clinton and Obama) the republicans hopefully have realized that neo-conservatism is not the way and their identity needs revamped. this is an ebb and flow of politics that occurs in every democratically run government. i am happy and hope to see the republicans, who are looking to change who they are, return to the conservatism that I believe in. won't get my hopes up too high as long as palin is calling herself a R tho...
- SheilaNoya, on 01/31/2009, -3/+16LOL - Perfect!
- lordmike, on 01/31/2009, -6/+18Same package, different wrapper...
- mmittimm, on 01/31/2009, -13/+25First dems make history by coming very close to nominating Hillary Clinton for president. Next John McCain makes a move obviously trying to take advantage of this and chooses Sarah Palin (No way she'd have been chosen if she were a man) for VP. Next dems elect the first black president. Shortly after, the GOP elects the first black leader of their party.
Anyone see a pattern starting? It seems like they're grasping at straws at this point. - sigmaman2, on 01/31/2009, -0/+12He's a horse?

Q: Should people have access to buy assault weapons?
A: Society should draw lines. What do you need an assault weapon for, if you're going hunting? That's overkill. But I don't think that means you go to a total ban for those who want to use gun for skeet shooting or hunting or things like that But what's the point of passing gun laws if we're not going to enforce them? If you want to talk about gun control, that's where you need to start. We've got 300 gun laws on the books right now. At the end of the day, it's about how we enforce the law. - Briandrews15, on 01/31/2009, -11/+22this has nothing to do with affirmative action, he was the right man for the job. he was judged by his character rather than the color of his skin, i'snt that the point?
- brainboy7777, on 01/31/2009, -17/+27The real news here is that there are more than 0 non-white members of the RNC.
- BigCheezy, on 01/31/2009, -8/+17You realize Bush appointed black people to some of the highest positions that minority had ever seen? GOP *really* doesn't mean separate from the black community.
- franklymister, on 01/31/2009, -7/+16Too bad there's no clear definition of "assault weapon."
The phrase doesn't even make sense. Is there some kind of firearm I haven't heard of which can't be used in an assault? It was a phrase made up by anti-gun crusaders which basically can be defined as "any gun that looks too scary to me."
I'm a dyed in the wool liberal on most issues, but this obsession with blocking 2nd Amendment rights makes no sense to me. Sounds like Michael Steele is my exact ideological opposite. - Kanten, on 01/31/2009, -2/+11More like 7.2%, 10 million votes, 192 electoral.
- MCJackhammer, on 01/31/2009, -1/+10He's the magic negro who's gonna save the GOP.
- Murrabbit, on 01/31/2009, -6/+15Hey everybody let's all tell a site full of individuals with various liberal points of view what they think! Extra points if we just call 'em all "The Liberals" and act like it's a swear word!
Sorry, mindy624, this is Digg, not talk radio. - Nodaki, on 01/31/2009, -0/+8http://www.c-spanarchives.org/library/index.php?ma ...
I thought Michael Steele was the best candidate for the job after the debate. I did not know much about any of the candidates but I thought Steele answered the questions to the best of my liking. I suggested Steele to my state chaiman and national committeman.
I am a Republican, and I don't believe the party is without saving yet. There is a huge opportunity to put aside the differences with Libertarian leaning conservatives and become a force of dissent. We agree on more than we disagree and a mixture with libertarian ideology will bring life back to the party. Steele answered questions in the debate that seemed to lean in the direction of expanding the umbrella.
Mike Duncan failed horribly and deserved to be tossed on his ass. - mediablitz, on 01/31/2009, -4/+12Why didn't we hear Republicans on Digg saying that about Obama? It was all "white guilt", and "just because he is black".
Now, it is just a "he's the right man", even though he supports affirmative action?
You don't see any hypocrisy? - Kanten, on 01/31/2009, -3/+11When did you last need an AK-47 for hunting or defense?

- netant, on 01/31/2009, -0/+8Here is the "real" problem with the Republican Party: It has no credibility.
If it ever was for small-gov't, family values, integrity, capitalism, and protecting the nation, its "brand" has been nuked by the past eight years of George W Bush, Mark Foley, Tom DeLay, Dick Cheney, etc.
Even if you cynically operate on the belief that stupid people only flock to a winner, and they can be manipulated back into the fold, that is not a basis upon which to build a "brand". You have to have something to rally around. "Bailouts are bad", "Democrat issues are bad", and in four years we'll bring back the disenchanted is a PATHETIC strategy. (But perhaps the Republicans' best option. And I say that oozing with contempt.)
The problem with the Republicans picking a black guy for their RNC Chair is that somehow they think throwing a few gestures left and right is going to FIX their credibility problem. News flash, most people didn't vote for Obama because he was black. They voted for him because the country is in a crisis, and he appeared to have a more competent demeanor than his opponent. You can indulge racism when things are going good, but not when it looks like life as we know it will end.
What the Republicans need a new version of a Newt Gingrich. Someone who can articulate a strategy that can sell enough voters to come back to the Republican fold. That also means purging a LOT of politicians/pundits that hurt sales of the new brand. Voting for a black chairman made sense if Republican STRATEGY was to be more racially inclusive. But we all know that is BS. The problem with picking this guy is not that he's black, but that he looks like the other bozos that lost 2006-.2008. The Republicans need their version of Obama, and he can even be white. - joe122370, on 01/31/2009, -4/+12the KKK was started by Democrats, their leader Robert Byrd has been a democrat elected to congress forever, and you really have your fact backward
- MrColdheart, on 01/31/2009, -5/+12The GOP and Fox news constantly made sexist remarks about Palin how long before one of them slips up and makes a racist comment about steel?
I give it one month. - tnoy, on 01/31/2009, -0/+7"how stupid do they think people are?"
You must be new to... earth. - inactive, on 01/31/2009, -14/+21Now the republicans have their own token black guy.
- bluesman3535, on 01/31/2009, -3/+10On the money. Nothing against Mr Steele but mere image and media appearances can't reform a party. However GOP run media are doing a good job of pretending they have the clout of 2001 while unfairly blaming the horrible economy on Obama 2 weeks into his term.
- GrodyChamp, on 01/31/2009, -7/+14He's actually one of the least neo-con republicans. Shows what you know.
