- orbit1979, on 10/11/2007, -15/+84"the health care and insurance industry, which is exposed in the movie and has expressed concerns about the impact of the movie on their industries, is a major corporate underwriter of President George W. Bush and the Republican Party, having contributed over $13 million to the Bush presidential campaign in 2004 and more than $180 million to Republican candidates over the last two campaign cycles."
That says it all right there. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -6/+30There is also a fantastic article about special vacation packages being sold to Americans who are seeking cheaper (but no less quality) healthcare outside oif the United States. Thety usually get the package with accomodations and airfare and a short stay while they heal. I forget what paper I read the article in, but Google should find these medical/surgical vacations. And there have been no horrors stories of unqualified undergroudn doctors. The patients are treated at state-of-the-art facilities with qualified doctors who went to medical school just like in the west. There is no third world :)
- knulpm, on 10/11/2007, -7/+29Could have been summed up shorter:
Dear Government,
Thanks for the free publicity. Knew you'd come through again.
Michael Moore.
P.S. Please check out Sicko in a theater near you June 29th. - Mayhew, on 10/11/2007, -3/+22If they really wanted to hurt the film they'd just ignore it, instead of generating all this free publicity. Moore couldn't buy an add on the Google News front page, but this story breaking put his big smiling face on it a gratuit.
- tsk1979, on 10/11/2007, -3/+22@diggthiscrap
Yes there are such tourism healthcare packages.
Here in India there is lot of money being earned. Healthcare in India sucks if you are poor, but if can spend about 1/10th the money people in America spend you get world class healthcare. For example a dental Implant from a very good dental surgeon costs around 1000$, comparable cost in a so-so facility in the US is $5000+ I suppose.
If you want braces, a very good dentist will give you world class braces for 400$
Similar things are seen in heart disease etc.,
This is called medical tourism, see the Taj, and get operated, and total cost still half of what you will pay in the US, besides you don't have to wait 6 months in the line. - infomexico, on 10/11/2007, -15/+32this is good news for michael, free publicity for the movie and for michaels cause. bush and his fellows must be scared.
- laserblazer, on 10/11/2007, -11/+26He helped 9/11 victims.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -12/+27lol, Micheal Moore is going to get a Republican elected to the White House again.
- Shaman760, on 10/11/2007, -5/+20Walter Reed. Katrina. That's all anyone has to look at to set precedent for this admin.
- smacksaw, on 10/11/2007, -2/+16Though to be fair, Moore seems to often entertain with lies of omission. He is of course inferring that the Democrats recieved $0.
Even if they only got 80% of what the GOP got, perhaps their lack of clout in DC would explain that.
Not defending the Republicans here, but it's not as if they're any more/less corrupt than the Dems. I'd just like to see ALL of the figures and decide for myself instead of having Moore decide for me. - arcangelgabriel, on 10/11/2007, -20/+33Gopher

Section 515.201(b) of the Cuban Assets Control Regulations, 31 C.F.R. Part 515 (the "Regulations"). Basically, you have to be granted a license to go to Cuba.
There's a copy of the letter to Michael at the end of this article here:
http://www.libertypost.org/cgi-bin/readart.cgi?ArtNum=186841 - TalkingBanana, on 10/11/2007, -29/+40I think Michael Moore is a very intelligent and articulate man with excellent moral fiber and he truly knows how to rattle the governments cages. This threat by the government shows how scared they are and this is great news for everyone who does not like the administration. This attack can even be used against the government if Moore so chooses, and something tells me he will Good luck Michael Moore, Talking Bananas everywhere support you!
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -16/+27I recall the Bush Administration had spent more money trying to block Michael Moore's Fahrenheit 911 than they did actually battling Kerry at the time. Did they forget who their real opponent was?
- DrinkPaint, on 10/11/2007, -9/+20If America really was the Land of the Free, it's citizens would be free to travel to any country they want.
- catalysis, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9I don't think the healthcare industry has really changed much since the democrats were in power. I'm not saying republicans aren't partly to blame, but the industry has been the same for decades and it seems kind of silly to infer that it is all because of the current administration.
- minox, on 10/11/2007, -3/+11I see Michael Moore is doing reparation for owning Halliburton stock? Honestly, I think what he did with these 9/11 survivors is disgusting. I am not saying that how the government treated them, or didn't treat them, was right. But what Michael Moore did was objectively wrong. He brought extremely sick people to Cuba to make a political statement. I have not heard yet what kind of treatment they received there if any. I have read, however, that one man he promised to take was left in New York and didn't receive any kind of treatment.
- charlie55, on 10/11/2007, -2/+10if oil is too expensive, ride a bike, or move closer to work/school. and buy local products that havent used much oil to transport. just whining about prices doesnt do anything. if you have a problem, solve it yourself.

"Did they forget who their real opponent was?"
That would be... liberty? - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7You can come up with better examples than those. Katrinas last minute preparation (or lack thereof) and the response was a failure at the local, state, and federal level. The levees were a problem and well known as a ticking time bomb for decades.
The Walter Reed problem is also one that didn't magically appear during the Bush administration, and honestly it's a problem that one might expect to see in a bureaucracy.
Why not get into the runaway spending, expanding medicare (which like Walter Reed has something to do with the topic and unlike Walter Reed you can pin almost solely on Bush), failing to use his post 9/11 capital for real reforms like school vouchers and Social Security privatisation? Why not get into the war? - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -2/+9buried for being from AlterNet.org

- yaroze, on 10/11/2007, -4/+10I wish I could unbury this. the poster does indeed have a VERY Valid Point, I have lived with Cubans when I was in the Job Corps. (You know that government program for underprivelaged people, Citizens or not, in the US, that provides Job skills training, and a place to live during their time there, FREE OF CHARGE) but as I said I have lived with many Cubans there, and None, zero, Zilch have ever said they want to go back there after coming here to the states. They will tell you how lovely parts of the country are (outside of the more populated areas) but the government is so bad that, if they decided to return, it would be a death sentence.
Here in our country we take many freedoms that we have for granted. In Cuba if they could read minds and find you not thinking about following the hardliners ideas, well your not allowed to think. - dagaz, on 10/11/2007, -16/+22Micheal Moore - legend.
Bush administration - dickwads. - sterken, on 10/11/2007, -4/+10Buried for being about Michael Moore. He doesn't deserve the publicity he gets.
- yaroze, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6I honestly don't think it's going to be just a "Democrat" to fix how screwed up our government is, remember the Democratic party has done their part to screw us all over as well.
What we need is someone who is well rounded politician, one that will listen to all sides of the argument, and think for them selves, of a way to benifit the needs of all of the Citizens of our great country, That is how our founding fathers worked.
This Dem Must be left and Reb Must be right mentality has to stop, yes it find and dandy to save the planet, but at what cost? Make people stop driving at gunpoint? well thats how outrageous some of the people these days are becoming.
We need to step back and think, Medical costs are outrageous, why, well how much does it cost to go to school to become a doctor/nurse/Dentist? Lots of money.
So that creates HUGE debt for the medical professional, next we have the drug companies, another eyesore, globally no less, They invest MILLIONS in developing a cure/placebo, they need to find someway to recoup the investment, which makes drugs expensive, it's unfortunate bit it is a fact of life.
Lets not forget the insurance industry, holy cow, now there is a cashcow, a friend of mine who became a dentist about 4 years ago, he pays HUGE premiums to the insurance company since the state will not allow him to practice without a certin amount of coverage.
Why is insurance such a cash cow these days, well our TORT system, "That Doctor Gave me one too many stitches let sue him for all hes worth" This has gotta stop, I can understand accidental death (which there is insurance for .. go figure) and other screw ups, but mass tort where the person hurt, only gets a 1/10th maybe (especially in a class action) The Doctor and or hospital have to file chap 11 because of the other 9/10s going to the lawyers and courts.
We need a Complete Government that can get in there and and make some change, none of this hard left or right crap, but common sense people. I think thats what we are missing these days, is that Common Sense, I know it is a tall order to ask for bu thats my $.02 - MeanYogurt, on 10/11/2007, -4/+10Cubans ride rafts made from barrels and old cars to get America. Now what? Are Americans going to start riding Michael Moore to get to Cuba for healthcare?

Welcome the new boss, same as the old boss. - blackjack75, on 10/11/2007, -2/+8For some gravity-related reason he's on the No-Take-Off list.
Yes, I know it's evil to make fun of fat people. But being fat is like being jewish or black, you are allowed to make jokes on those of your kind. - siszam, on 10/11/2007, -5/+10Like many countries they do a lot of things better than us. When a hurricane threatens Cuba they round up citizens and get them to safety. They don't leave them to drown then hold guns on the survivor's as they try to leave their devastated city like America does. Venezuela has a zero deficit and one of most loved leaders. America's deficit grows by the second and the President is one of the most hated men alive. More civilized countries have fully tax funded health care. The U.S. proudly lets people die from lack of care and doesn't blink when old people choose between food and meds.
- charlie55, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5in that article he discussed many things, none of which actually have to do with the legality of his trip to cuba.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5@ tsk1979
Medical Tourism -- yes that's it -- thanks for the information on the prices as well. It gives people a good idea. I think that the costs of stuff like hip replacements was often 10 times less than American prices as well. I mean the price difference is shocking in many cases without any loss of quality care! - dime, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5"Except when giving 'aid' to its enemies, which they consider Cuba/Castro to be, by going there directly or indirectly."
Put the waders on, it's gettin' deep in here.
In case you didn't realize, you can hop on a plane and go to anywhere... Iraq, Afghanistan, Iran, Syria... hell, you could take a lovely vacation to North Korea if you wanted.
The only place you can't go (and actually spend money - ooo caveat!) is Cuba. Explain why. - Jimmerz, on 10/11/2007, -6/+9@ edebolt
"great *US* rolls out the red carpet to embarrass the *whatever could be more embarrasing than the US health care system in the developed world* and more *poor Americans* are neglected than usual. *US* is a interesting place to visit but its a joke of failed government and the health care. LOL!!!!!!! (And we didn't have the benefit of an embargo by a superpower against us all these years, because we were the superpower.)
Maybe if people travel there then they will see what I mean. (Detroit) is crumbling hazard of a city of complete neglect on all levels. Nice people in the countryside but be careful in (Detroit)."
Fixed. And what's your point? - cswnow, on 10/11/2007, -6/+9micheal moor is a FAT rich hypocrite.
- Snarfy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3The US is the most litigatious country in the world. That's why medical expenses are so high. Your doctor has to charge you $150 just for an office visit because $100 of it is to pay for malpractice insurance. If people weren't so sue happy then costs wouldn't be so bad.
- redrabbit, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5As a frequent traveller to Cuba, I'd like to throw-in that under the embargo, American journalists are allowed to travel to Cuba if they are filming or writing a story or doing any kind of reporting. Moore was filming a documentary there, so I would agree he broke no laws.
- MacGyver, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5Exploiting people is nothing new for Moore. He did the same thing in Bowling for Columbine when he brought those students that had been shot into Kmart to return the bullets they were shot with. Moore's whole career is built on exploiting people and manipulating information. He claims to be from the poverty stricken town of Flint, Michigan but really grew up in a rich white suburban neighborhood.
- manicallday, on 10/11/2007, -3/+6Actually the health care is quite good in Cuba. They have on average maintained a better birth rate average and life expectancy rates than the US. http://www.answers.com/topic/list-of-countries-by-birth-rate.
- misterhat, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3I'm actually curious to see the movie, even though I absolutely hate Mike Moore for some of the reasons already mentioned (and the comments were not dugg down, I might add).
But anyways, I'm someone who has probably been ***** by our medical system, and I will have serious long term implications because I had to go to an overcrowded (filled with mexicans without insurance looking for basic medical care) emergency room, wait 5 hours to even get a room, then another hour to get a doctor, only to be told that I could not see a specialist (ophthalmologist) by the attending ER physician because, according to him, I did not need to (I'm convinced the ER resident doc that i first saw felt something was wrong, because she told me to follow up at an opthalmology clinic the next day it was open. I mentioned that this day would not be convinent for me, but she basically told me that i should be the first person in line when it opened up the next week). I also perfectly described the symptoms of a very serious eye issue (blind spot that looks like a drape is hanging over the lower right corner), and his response was basically "I'm sure you do".
I found out two weeks later that I had a "giant retinal tear and detachment", which is a medical emergency that should have been addressed ASAP. My opthalmic surgeon also told me that "most opthalmologists will never see a case as severe as yours in their entire career", though, I'm lucky enough to be enrolled at a huge university with a world reknowned hospital/teaching center.
I just think it is really ***** up because I have private health insurance, my parents (i'm still listed as a dependent) could prob. afford to pay SIGNIFICANT medical costs, yet I was really shoved aside just because so many people were using the damn er for ***** a family practitioner could have taken care of. And while the attending physician was a complete *****, I really think the current state of our er system requires him to think as a logistician as opposed to a medical doc.
I'm just lucky as hell that only my peripheral vision was effected. - Aggaman, on 10/11/2007, -5/+8"have lived with many Cubans there, and None, zero, Zilch have ever said they want to go back there after coming here to the states"
Funny that. The Mexicans say the same thing. In fact, people who move from poor countries to rich countries almost always say that.
Moreover, people who move from one country to another and stay almost always say that. You're talking to a self selecting group. You are more likely to meet immigrants who don't want to go back to their own country for the simple reason that those who like the country stay, and those who don't like the country tend to leave.
When I was in Canada, I would meet a lot of Brits who swore that they would never return to live in Britain. In fact, almost all the British permanent residents of Canada I met were like that. That doesn't mean that everyone in Britain is dying to leave, it just means that people who left and stayed gone didn't really want to live there. - djsputnik, on 10/11/2007, -3/+6"Secretary Paulson,
I am contacting you (edit) to promote (end edit) my next documentary, on the American Healthcare system. SiCKO, which will be seen in theaters this summer, will expose the health care industry's greed and control over America's political processes. -i fixed it for him
--you can thank me later - cyke1, on 10/11/2007, -4/+7All you people you think America is such a bad place, maybe you should try living in a third world country for a few years. Preferably Cuba, Venezuela, Iran or North Korea and when you go there don't bring any money or credit cards and try living like the poor do. See how good your health care is then, and when it isn't good enough. Try protesting about it then and see what happens to you.
You people have to see that America is not perfect but it is a lot better than most countries. See here we may not always like our leaders and the things they do but we know that come the next election we can voice our opinion and hopefully get them out of power. And if the next election is not soon enough for some you can always go out and protest. - kindpastor, on 10/11/2007, -5/+8You know, people who go to India and Cuba for cheap health care are technically "rich" by Indian and Cuban standards. I'm sure the majority of the people living in Cuba and India don't get the kind of care the health tourists pay for.
I also think its funny how everybody here supports Michael Moore as a "rebel" when he wants to give the government more power (through higher taxes and gun confiscation) than it already has now. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -8/+10michael moore is a fat pig

Vote Castro, or Die!
Simple. - adamruth, on 10/11/2007, -3/+5I can't stand Michael Moore, but I do have to say good on him for breaking a ridiculous law.
- Aggaman, on 10/11/2007, -13/+15Michael Moore may be a propagandist, but when he got up and ranted at the Oscars, a lot of people ridiculed him. Shame on them.
As it turns out, he was absolutely right, and now most people believe (like him) that the war was *****.
I've noticed how quiet the media have been about him in the last couple of years, and that says a lot. This is what happens when people like them are proven wrong. They can't just come out and admit it. Instead they just try to ignore and marginalize the people who said the right things in the first place. -
