    Approximately 1.25 million mental patients are imprisoned in America. It is very hard for defense attorneys to get "not guilty for reason of insanity" verdicts from juries. This is partly because by the time a jury sees the defendant, it is months after the mental patient's initial arrest, and the defendant has been treated for the mental dysfunction. That is what happened in Andrea Yate's case - the Texas mother who drowned her five children.
