- Swivelstick, on 01/15/2009, -0/+8How 'bout normal use drugs then, like caffeine, alcohol, nicotine et al or prescription drugs that can really ***** one up and kill more then any "recreational" drug (all classes) ever could. That suit ya Mr Ranger?
- novenator, on 01/15/2009, -0/+6Beyond its medical applications, cannabis is a wondrous weed with a bounty of industrial applications. This is a no brainer
- inactive, on 01/15/2009, -0/+6Thank you Mr. Webster:)

Analogous to Ron Paul winning online polls, while getting trounced in the real world. I am pretty sure if you did a scientific survey of American's top 10 wishes for Obama to focus on, legalizing marijuana would MAYBE make it in about 9 or 10. - deadlyassmite, on 12/20/2008, -0/+4Err.......... #1 on Change.org sorry for the typo.
- booksnmore4you, on 01/15/2009, -1/+5Wow, websites can be gamed! Who knew?
- novenator, on 01/15/2009, -0/+4Now that I made a bit of time, went in and finally registered, update profile, and voted. Though I agree with medical Marijuana decriminalization (and I don't smoke the stuff btw), I had to give a boost to Single Payer Healthcare instead, that is probably a more important issue for our country at this time.
There were some really interesting choices on that web page to. Lower voting age to 16, finish instating the Metric System, get us to Green Energy by 2012, etc. - inactive, on 01/15/2009, -0/+4Most people that end up in jail, or some place they shouldn't be, and then feel really sick in the morning after smoking a bowl, wish they just would have gotten rip roaring drunk instead. I've seen it on cops so many times...
- inactive, on 01/15/2009, -0/+3Well ,maybe the two issues could be combined. Strange top 10 though...
- booksnmore4you, on 01/15/2009, -0/+3None of that is hear nor there to my point.
My point is that the website is not reflective of actual national sentiment about what should be Obama's priorities. It reflects what a small subset of saavvy Internet users got a website to indicate. - JenniferInMO, on 01/15/2009, -0/+2I agree with you there, Books. I don't think the sites were gamed, but the voting on change.gov and change.org do not reflect a fair cross section of the public. We need to have more polling and more discussion. It is sad that the last respectable poll was in 2002.
- JenniferInMO, on 01/15/2009, -0/+2I think you are right Media. In a national poll it might make it to 9 or 10. Unfortunately no one does polls on this. The last respectable poll was done by the Pew Foundation in 2002.
- JenniferInMO, on 01/15/2009, -0/+2I don't think so, Books.
It has been a costly war. Consider the groups of people who favor reform:
The several hundred thousand people in prison at any given time, their families (and those who have been imprisoned in years past) = several million
Law enforcement officers = there is a growing cry from officers who have been in the line of fire and believe the the war is unwinnable. See http://www.leap.cc/cms/index.php
Medical marijuana is a big deal. When my grandmother was dying of cancer my father and uncle desperately tried to find some pot somewhere for her. Her doctor recommended it. My father worked in law enforcement and risked his career to find something, anything that would help. He found some and it helped her immensely. The doctors and nurses allowed her to smoke in the hospital.
There are more people than you could ever know who would benefit from marijuana and be able to get off of less effective, more dangerous and often addictive drugs: http://www.mpp.org/library/common-questions-about- ...
Americans overwhelmingly support legalizing marijuana for medical purposes: http://www.mpp.org/library/widespread-support-for- ...
Economists have always thought the War on Drugs is costly: http://www.prohibitioncosts.org/index.html
There is little polling data because there are too many reasons for our government to want to continue the "War on Drugs" (e.g. covert actions, excuses to remove leaders of other countries we don't favor, and a huge amount of money which is unaccounted for). Here is one poll which shows pretty supportive numbers and a rising trend toward legalization: http://www.pollingreport.com/drugs.htm The last data was in 2002 and information since then has been immense.
Libertarians are against prohibition mostly because they are against all government intrusion on anything that isn't absolutely necessary.
Many traditional conservatives are against the Drug War mostly for fiscal reasons.
There are many on the left (including me) who see the "War on Drugs" as a killer of people in poverty, especially in urban areas. It is often such a financially attractive choice and there are so few alternatives that a disproportionate number of poor urban kids get wrapped up in dealing and the violence resulting from the massive profit on the black market.
There is also the large percentage of Americans who currently smoke marijuana and those who have smoked marijuana in the past who realize it is less harmful than alcohol or tobacco.
You know I could go on, but the bottom line is that I do not think those numbers were gamed. I think they are real and until we open up a national debate, do some real studies and polling we will just keep throwing people in jail and watching people die ... and paying billions for it. - booksnmore4you, on 01/15/2009, -0/+1I inadvertently replied below.
- JenniferInMO, on 01/15/2009, -0/+1And don't forget about the farmers who want to grow hemp for a myriad of uses like rope, food, clothing, etc. as well as the environmentalists who support hemp growers.
- inactive, on 12/20/2008, -8/+3Recreational drugs. That has to be the oxymoron of all time. (for you digger kids, OXYMORON: a figure of speech that combines two normally contradictory terms)
