- DFENS, on 08/13/2008, -2/+19He just wants to be on TV.
- DigiDave, on 08/13/2008, -3/+17I feel like this paper was written with the intent of getting on the front page of digg.
- DigiDave, on 08/13/2008, -4/+16You can download the paper here: http://cyrusfarivar.com/blog/?p=1677
- 11oops, on 08/14/2008, -0/+11No, the paper was written with the intent of getting an interview on a satirical cable news show -- and perhaps becoming VP in 2012 during Colbert's next presidential bid.
- notque, on 08/13/2008, -1/+12Cute title for the paper, “The Colbert Bump in Campaign Donations: More Truthful than Truthy”
- gamebittk, on 08/13/2008, -2/+10"Democrats who come on the program raise $8,247 more than colleagues"
It could be because the Report is selective about who appears on the show. If the Report hosts politicians who have more popular appeal, then it's not surprising that those politicians raise more than less appealing politicians.
But the author did mention that Republicans don't benefit from the show, which means that the show possibly does help Democrats -- which shows the effectiveness of the Colbert Bump.
I read the article, not the paper, so I could be very wrong.
BTW, the Colbert Report is one of my favorite shows. Colbert '08! - sechappell, on 08/13/2008, -0/+7Thanks for the link to the paper proper. I appreciate that.
- inactive, on 08/14/2008, -0/+6BEARS!
- inactive, on 08/14/2008, -0/+3It is sad when satire comedy programs like The Daily Show and The Colbert Report actually give you more news than the actual news networks.
With that said, I never miss The Daily Show or The Colbert Report. :) - Demener, on 08/14/2008, -0/+2We have actual news networks?
Oh wait you mean the reporters Stewart and Colbert are always making fun of! - catfish182, on 08/14/2008, -0/+2Jim told me to tell you that he gives great advice.
Now if you will excuse me i have to help finance The Truman Show 2: Syndication. He says its a winner! - webkami, on 08/14/2008, -2/+4*writes quickly to finish off the "digg effect" paper*
- DigiDave, on 08/14/2008, -0/+2Actually... that's not my blog - that's the blog that first tipped me off to the paper.
- wilspoak, on 08/14/2008, -2/+3Statistics FTW! I have a grad student friend who teaches an intro to stat class, I'm going to forward this to her in hopes that some of her less stat-crazed students can be tricked into thinking it's cool.
"I like doing correlations because it is a fun thing to do" :-D - shortbusgeek, on 08/27/2008, -0/+1Please call the Commission on Presidential Debates at (202) 872-1020 and politely request that they include Bob Barr, the Libertarian Party nominee for president, in the presidential debates.
- Iztikeit, on 08/15/2008, -0/+1They don't give you more news than actual news networks. Since neither give you a unbiased legitimate source of news I'd say they are about equal. (which is still sad...)
We haven't had actual news networks since.....NEVER! Who wants acutely informed citizens? - gimpbully, on 08/14/2008, -0/+1no, you can download it here:

That's just your blog - GreatSunJester, on 08/14/2008, -2/+2Gee... you would almost think that getting in front of more people will raise awareness. Kind of like something getting linked on Digg, Slashdot or Drudge. Add to that a sympathetic audience (I am guessing that more democrats than republicans watch Colbert), I would certainly HOPE that any democrat who is on gets a 'bump'
This just in, republicans who are mentioned positively on Rush Limbaugh's show see an increase in funds from republican voters. That was sarcasm, please -- do NOT go out and fund a study of this. - solarweasel, on 08/14/2008, -3/+3The Colbert Bump isn't exclusive. Any lesser-known individual who appears on a primetime TV slot is going to see an increase in popularity. I wish I could publish a paper on something so completely obvious.
- deadmoo, on 08/14/2008, -2/+2Did he use a tape measure or statistics?
- uncmoose187, on 08/14/2008, -4/+4The bump is not just about money like this paper says..its about recognition, and that in itself is invaluable. Silly researchers.

^^Basically same thing. - TheRhinoceros, on 08/14/2008, -1/+1It doesn't matter why this thing was written. It might be skewed, it might be completely miss major factors, such as how many fundraisers the candidate has before a candidate is on Colbert as opposed to how many he does after. But ya know something? None of that matters. Why?
It's entertainment. If it were anything more, it wouldn't have been on eurekalert.org. If it had more merit, It would have been on the UCSD website.
Still cool tho. Colbert Kicks ass!
That's my two cents. - madpuppy, on 08/14/2008, -1/+0It is pretty scary when a comedy show can influence people to make serious decisions on their lives. not that "real" news shows are any better. but, it is like getting life advice from bozo the clown or Jim Carrey.
- madpuppy, on 08/14/2008, -1/+0old rubber face might just have something there.......:P
- Frankyfan3, on 08/14/2008, -2/+0http://digg.com/politics/The_Seattle_Hempfest_XVII ...
- zyklon, on 08/14/2008, -4/+2I'm guilty for digging it then?
- pckbeta, on 08/14/2008, -6/+2First, this is a duplicate.
Second, I'll leave the same comment I did before.
"National television exposure of a product or idea causes people to like/buy that thing more than they would otherwise? Maybe people should build an industry around this fantastic idea!"
