- meese, on 06/24/2008, -5/+53Here's one of the key lines of the article:
"On top of the numbers above, John McCain has already raised more than $100 million in private funds for his 2008 campaign. Consequently, by the time November rolls around, it is nearly certain that 75% of John McCain's expenditures will have been raised from private sources." - NoDrama, on 06/24/2008, -12/+55This has been sitting out there, under-reported, for two months. Why?
No, it's not McCain bury bots haunting DIGG and REDDIT (which they obviously do.) It's because the media would prefer you not think about it due to their own conflict of interest.
http://obamesque.wordpress.com/2008/06/21/conflict ... - bluevillage, on 06/24/2008, -4/+40This is the best demonstration of why "the system is broken."
- djcb, on 06/24/2008, -16/+34This is yet another example of why Sen Obama shows good judgment by opting out of public financing.
- SethEllis, on 06/24/2008, -4/+19and yet the $156.3 million that this article estimates for McCain will still pale in comparison to the over $200 million that has been projected for Obama.
- meese, on 06/24/2008, -6/+21The point is that McCain is also getting his money privately (and from a smaller number of big donors than Obama), but hypocritically attacking Obama about public financing.
If McCain really believed in public financing, he wouldn't coordinate with the RNC or state GOPs and he wouldn't allow them to spend money for his presidential campaign. - inactive, on 06/24/2008, -1/+15Um, what? He passes for a douche, not a liberal. Wishing someone is dead is neither liberal nor conservative, though if you want to politicise death, the right is more likely to kill you than the left.
- hotbottledwater, on 06/24/2008, -3/+16What a dumb argument. No wonder the McCain campaign is hosed.
You're saying: "Obama is doing that as well."
The response I would have is PRECISELY. That's the point.
The DIFFERENCE is that McCain is getting on his high horse and ripping OBama a new one for doing the VERY SAME THING.
Hypocritical McSame jackass. - bullcutter, on 06/24/2008, -4/+14you're all forgetting that Obama has raised twice as much money as McCain and currently has about twice as much to spend. this is because he is by far and away a more exciting and invigorating candidate than McCain.
therefore, who cares how McCain gets his money? he'll still be trailing Obama by a long shot, no matter what he does.
its humorous that the right are the ones crying "foul" this time against the cold reality of survival of the fittest capitalism.
if the "system is unfair" (ie its unfair that the opposing candidate is infinitely more charismatic and promising than yours), maybe you'd prefer living in a socialist state? - treed, on 06/24/2008, -3/+13Not at all. Did you see that word "also"? That's an admission that Obama's doing the same thing.
The problem here, as has already been stated, is that McCain is being a hypocrite by doing the same thing while denouncing it. - n00ptic, on 06/24/2008, -1/+11I don't know about the conspiracy theory stuff, but the fact is that this has been massively under-reported. To me, the biggest thing is that McCain's combined election fund actually allows him to accept up to $60,000 per donor. People are talking about Obama getting a quarter of a billion in the general election, but McCain could match that number with about 4200 fat-cat donors. Of course, that would leave McCain very beholden to a small group of wealthy and connected people. But hey, that seems to be the GOP way.
- forgiste, on 06/24/2008, -8/+18If McCain wins this time, I'm never voting again. His win would clearly demonstrate to me and countless others that the system doesn't work.
- DaDrake, on 06/24/2008, -2/+11Ok I am no election expert, but as soon as the general election starts (officially).... McCain MUST limit himself to 84 million. Secondly, the article saids "John McCain would have had a $9 million spending edge over Obama if Obama took public financing." then talks about over 73 MILLION raised past the 84 million.
I need another source that explains this more in detail ... seems to me, this individual and the blogger are confusing primary funding with general election funding. - DaDrake, on 06/24/2008, -0/+8Legalize drugs..... pay teachers 10 thousand less then the average MD earns (who just spent 4 years extra, 2 years of residency, and who doesn't have the luxury of a 9-5 job)... and what about sluts? Man, that is a winning position, wonder why nobody ever thought of it.
- inactive, on 06/24/2008, -1/+9So the conservatives I blocked for wishing Ted Kennedy died a slow painful death should be representative of all conservatives, using your logic?
That is one tight little bubble you live in... - egoideal, on 06/24/2008, -3/+11Yet another mindless minion who COMPLETELY missed the ENTIRE POINT of the article. Bravo!
- dayal911, on 06/24/2008, -6/+13Actually, according to FactCheck.org, only 1.7% of McCain's funding has come from PAC or Lobbyists.
Not all private funds are bad, or come from lobbyists. - WasabiBomb, on 06/24/2008, -2/+9And in every one, there's a sudden spike on burying anti-McCain (or pro-Obama) posts. Posts like that will suddenly get multiple downDiggs all at once... and then there's a gradual rebound after that.
What that indicates to me is an *organized* group of people who methodically go through threads like this one and bury comments they don't like. - inactive, on 06/24/2008, -1/+7Why does no one attack the liberal 527 groups that are doing anti-mccain ads such as moveon.org? Why is it the right that always does wrong, yet no one calls the same ***** on the left? Digg is amazing.
btw, Vote Libertarian for real change. lp.org - peterfnet, on 06/24/2008, -0/+6Choosing not to vote because your guy didn't win? That doesn't make sense.
- br0ck, on 06/24/2008, -1/+6The magic of the Internet is that one silly troll with no liberal comments in their history says one offensive thing and suddenly 150 million can be labeled as the type of people that would wish a candidate for public office were dead.
- bjs3171, on 06/24/2008, -1/+6you mean the 200 million he'll raise from citizen donations? so what? that's not "private funding"
- swrostmore, on 06/24/2008, -0/+5McCain doesn't need to renege on his legally binding primary election public financing contract, because he can just illegally ignore the spending caps and nobody will call him out on it.
http://www.americablog.com/2008/03/mccain-busts-fe ... - nevetssav, on 06/24/2008, -0/+4Unbunch your panties and compare that to, say, the entertainment industry, sports, or a majority of other high paying social _conveniences_. The fact of the matter is that if there's anyone I want motivated to do a good job, I want it to be teachers - instead of still being subject to "publish or perish."
- Blax, on 06/24/2008, -0/+4You also have to realize that the RNC has their own money raising ability as well, and it completely exceeds that of the DNC up to this point. And beyond that, you get so called 527 groups, that are not limited at all and can spend their money any way that they want (Remember the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth that plagued Kerry?).
While I'm disappointed that Obama didn't take public financing, I understand that there is absolutely no chance he would be able to break even against McCain without being as filthy as him. He says that he couldn't work out a solution to the problem with McCain, and so he was forced to take the private fundraising route, and so far I have no reason to not believe what he says. - DavidGX, on 06/24/2008, -2/+6Good to see that Obama made the correct decision.
- ftx437, on 06/24/2008, -1/+5WOW! nice comeback there...
- gotrootdude, on 06/24/2008, -0/+4 The war was won. Now we need a exit strategy. The ENRON LOOPHOLE is the reason for the gas prices, so drilling won't help. It will keep us addicted to oil for a longer time though, so we can make sure our kids pay the Arabs.
Yesterday, McCain made a proposal of $300 million of your tax dollars to the $300 million for the development of a car battery that is 30% cheaper than current technology. With current development, that won't take long and probably won't be the battery we use in the electric cars four years from now. Nice proposal, bad idea. More government handouts by republicans. - inactive, on 06/24/2008, -0/+4Teacher's have it worse than crack dealers these days. Poor salary, constant fear of Christian parents, getting shot by Dylan, an obligation to deal with douchebags on a daily basis........
Crack dealers RARELY deal with Christian parents. AND THEY DRIVE GEO METROS - DaDrake, on 06/24/2008, -2/+6So far, McCain hasn't rejected public funding.
- drmobutu, on 06/24/2008, -3/+7Maybe we ought to just privatize the electoral system, outright.
One Dollar, One Vote...the candidate with the most money, come election day, wins.
If your candidate was the loser, you don't have to pay any taxes during the victor's Presidency...how''s that sound? - Cuchanu, on 06/24/2008, -1/+5As bluevillage stated the system is broken. What we think of as the "news" makes their money in advertising the people responsible for some of the governments worst conflicts of interest. And considering most Americans get their opinions and information from the "news" the system continues.
The amazing thing is that the semi-corruption of the system by corporate interests is so well documented and it is an amazing threat to our country. Yet you don't here a peep on the MSM due to fears of losing ad dollars. - pintomp3, on 06/24/2008, -0/+4it's not broken, it's rigged.
- PhilLesh69, on 06/25/2008, -0/+3McCain's campaign finance reform bill created the 527s, don't forget.
You know, "McCain-Feingold"?? - meese, on 06/24/2008, -1/+4You forgot the quotation marks around your talking points.
He really never pledged to take public financing. If you think I'm wrong, please cite the actual "pledge" (without taking anything out of context). - drmobutu, on 06/24/2008, -1/+4And by that measure, Obama has already won...
- Latentk, on 06/25/2008, -0/+3God damn it is so very frustrating. I hate the fact that for some reason the person asking for the proof (of which the subject matter is most obviously anti-Mccain/Pro-Obama), is for some reason dugg up, while the two who SUPPLIED that proof are buried down. Why? Those who are burying the two, please explain your logic. I can not explain it at all.
- nevetssav, on 06/24/2008, -0/+3In a 2004 interview, emeralddragon, McCain was quoted as saying that we need to take down the public finance system and get big injections of money *out* of politics. That's worse than changing your mind in light of a record-setting fundraising campaign.
- pintomp3, on 06/24/2008, -1/+4give him a break, he's just trying to earn some mccain action center points.
- greenriver572, on 06/24/2008, -0/+3or why the system works for them.
- tcpip4lyfe, on 06/24/2008, -0/+3I find it funny that neither side has any real idea of what their candidate stands for. I don't really like Bob Barr either but at least he stands for real change and I'm basically voting for him because of Ron Paul. I can't stand the Obama fan boys though. Their candidate lied to them and they start defending him. They are way worse then the hardcore Ron Paul fans. At least Ron Paul stood for real change and was interesting. Obama is just a really good politician and when he get's elected absolutely nothing will change
- inactive, on 06/24/2008, -2/+5No, that was a different thing. It's called honesty.
- diggit83, on 06/24/2008, -4/+7What a disgrace he is to the republican party(Or at least what it used to stand for)....dont jump to conclusions about my stances.
- marabout40, on 06/25/2008, -0/+3Obama PUBLICLY funds his campaign. 90% of his money comes from small donations from the public - not big donations from PRIVATE fundraisers.
- rjwisniewski, on 06/24/2008, -1/+3Obama is keeping the campaign the same as day one. Hence 5, 10, and 20 dollar donations from small donors. D U H!
- Conwaysb0718, on 06/24/2008, -4/+6I still say its damn fishy that the McCain campaign was super broke last august and then all of sudden he comes out of nowhere as a front runner.
- nevetssav, on 06/24/2008, -0/+2Your war hero should release his WHOLE record. We'll see why the decendent of two long-standing admirals did an about-face. Also, sweet job spelling Iraq.
- Barackalypse, on 06/24/2008, -2/+4Bashing rivals has been the new Obamaspam for several months now.
- skoles, on 06/24/2008, -1/+3The more I see this man flip his views, lie about things he's stated in the past and show complete lack of knowledge in areas he should be concerned with tells me from past experience he'll be the next president.
- SpykerSpeed, on 06/25/2008, -0/+2So you're suggesting that taxpayer dollars finance these ***** to be able to have political ads? I'd much rather private corporations and individuals waste their own money on ***** than waste mine.
