McCain's Admitted Keating Five Wrongdoing a "smear"

crooksandliars.com — In 1999, John McCain acknowledged his role in the 1980's Keating Five savings and loan scandal that rightly stained his career. "The fact is," he said, "it was the wrong thing to do." His campaign today instead claimed McCain's intervention years ago with federal regulators on behalf of Charles Keating was merely a "political smear job."

  • IrishJoe, on 10/07/2008, -0/+1John McCain got a slap on the wrist for his interfering with the Keating investigation and taking bribes. This was because he was a former POW. John Glen got off because he was an astronaut. All 5 of the Keating 5 should have gone to prison and McCain was the most involved and longest involved with felon Charles Keating and should have gotten the longest sentence. To now say that his slap on the wrist was a political smear job (when he's admitted wrongdoing already) is un-F'ing-believable.
