One of the things that the Public needs to ask is — not just why this level of deception and defamation is tolerated in Wikipedia — but why the segment of the population who finds deception and defamation "entertaining" is actually pandered to in preference to more responsible demographics.
When you can answer that question, you will have a clue to most of the problems with Wikipedia.

Or for that matter, leaders and elected officials outside of the United States... Wikipedia keeps yammering about how they're going to require pre-approval of edits to certain articles, but so far that's just been vaporware.
