- lastgleaming, on 05/26/2008, -0/+1McCain, Bush and the Republicans have managed to support the military in theory, give BIG bucks to outfits like Blackwater and other mercenaries for hire - but they complain and say it is 'too costly' to pay full GI Bill benefits to guys who have only put in THREE years in active duty. Considering that probably meant multiple deployments to Iraq or Afghanistan that is a bargain. The fact they also nickel and dime reservists who serve is well known - and they wonder why they have trouble recruiting. The pay for a mercenary average is about $140,000 per year - there are as many merncenaries and civilian contractors in Iraq as there are military -- you do the math. The average vet who puts in three years gets about $600 a month for college or training -- considering that MIGHT pay for rent in some apartment complex near campus - that is not a whole lot of money. Considering they have spent nearly a TRILLION dollars or more in Iraq and that hundreds and hundreds of millions have gone into the palace -- aka embassy in Iraq -- it would seem their priorities are extremely screwed up. I don't think John McCain is a primary example of a thoughtful or thinking vet - his service aside - his record is one of nickel and diming the military he hated when he signed up during the Vietnam era. His 'record' also includes crashing FIVE aircraft before he got shot down. If he had been any other military pilot it would have been enough to take him out of flying after the second event - they just don't care if it was an 'accident' -- they still place responsiblity on the pilot - regardless. I don't think McCain will be 'Swfit boated' but his service record does not mean he is pro veteran. The actions of the Bush Administration towards outfitting and updating and providing enough of everything for the military fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan is no better than Bill Clinton's. Shortage still exist of everything from meals to water bottles - countless cases of military begging parents for food or supplies -- exists. Yet they still want to short change the veterans - which is one reason no one in their right mind should believe Republican establishment ala Bush, McCain, et al give a big hoot in heck about the needs or well being of the veteran. Bush recently provided over a thousand Egyptians with scholarships to US universities - once again buying loyalty while back handing those who have proven their loyalty. After his statement that he quit 'golf to be in solidarity' with military families - I am convinced the guy is so disconnected or so clueless -- there is NO hope for him.- either that or he is mocking those who have served in REAL time instead of as a drunken frat boy with family connnections. I voted for him - twice and I probably will regret that the rest of my life.
