- Tex, on 07/28/2008, -28/+1629I like the part where McBush falsely claims the Founding Fathers chose "In God We Trust" as the national motto.
The traditional national motto (circa 1780s) is actually "E Pluribus Unum" (out of many, one). "In God We Trust" wasn't adopted as the national motto until the 1950s (in the midst of the Cold War's Red Scare), to distinguish us from those "godless Commies," around the same time they added "Under God" to the U.S. flag pledge. - inactive, on 06/09/2008, -42/+812McCain is starting to give douche bags a bad name.
- omnithought, on 06/09/2008, -19/+548Maybe McCain should read the writings of Jefferson, Franklin, and other founding fathers who were very critical of Christianity. Reading those and thinking that there was ever any intent to create a "Christian nation" would be akin to reading Mein Kampf and thinking it was about tolerance and diversity.
- ClosedCaption, on 06/09/2008, -6/+478"In god we trust" yet another thing younger than John Sidney McCain
- franklymister, on 06/09/2008, -3/+360You don't want to get into a "is this a Christian nation" discussion when it comes to the national election.
McCain might be pandering, insincere, and even flat out wrong, but it doesn't matter. One of the Republicans' top weapons in this election is going to be playing on "hard working Americans, white Americans'" fear that Obama is a "secret Muslim." (Thanks, Hillary!)
America is a secular nation, by Constitutional standards. We have freedom of religion, meaning that theoretically it should be as easy for a Hindu, Muslim, Buddhist, Sikh, Catholic, Jew, or Baptist to become President.
In reality, that's just not how Bubba and Cletus think.
This kind of video isn't meant to make McCain look bad, it's a coded shout out to the evangelical base to stir up rumors and theories about Obama. Don't play in to it. - gryphon50, on 06/09/2008, -15/+371McCain is such a good Christian he's cheated on both his wives! And let's not forget the time he called his wife Cindy a c**t in public, you can't get any more Christian than that.
- slogged, on 06/09/2008, -15/+327Where's his Jesus pin?
- Dumbledorito, on 06/09/2008, -12/+248This history lesson was not approved by the Texas State Department of Edjumacation, Praise Jeebus.
- RachaelMichele, on 06/09/2008, -14/+216I love that Obama is not afraid to say atheist.
- chromerium, on 06/09/2008, -28/+203Dugg because its interesting, though I wish it wasn't cut. Maybe some things were taken out of context?
Anyway, now Hillary is gone, time to start on the McCain hate? - Someguy101, on 02/19/2009, -12/+184Dear Presidential Candidates, please keep your religion out of our politics. Thanks.
- relic180, on 06/09/2008, -2/+162FYI, "In God We Trust" originated from the 'Knights of Columbus' who were also responsible for amending our pledge of allegiance, all under the umbrella of various fear mongering tactics (i.e. cold war, etc).
- goodnrg, on 06/09/2008, -11/+140He prefers someone with a "solid grounding in his faith". What about his lackey Sen. Lieberman?
- byrdgang, on 06/09/2008, -12/+111Notice how he conveniently throws in "Judeo" to make sure Jews don't feel left out (and would probably feel better about voting for him). At the same time, he leaves everyone not in either category (Christian or Jewish) out of the equation.
Thanks McCain! - aptanalogy, on 06/09/2008, -3/+100"I believe that God wants everyone to be free. That's what I believe. And that's one part of my foreign policy."
- George W. Bush - elhaf, on 06/09/2008, -3/+98The first ten pages of Franklin's autobiography makes it clear that he liked to argue with religious idiots and show them the contradiction of their ways - a sport never so popular as it is now, but this was in the 1700's.
- Ciryon, on 06/09/2008, -21/+110Sooo.. where are all the Christian Atheist-haters on digg now? Always calling us intolerant?
- apec766, on 06/09/2008, -13/+100"yet another thing younger than John Sidney McCain"
You mean God, right? - inactive, on 06/09/2008, -35/+121What a biggot.
- lead2thehead, on 06/09/2008, -2/+78So that would make McCain about 40 years old when they changed it?
- Goodanswer, on 06/09/2008, -4/+79Naw, we've been at it since day one.
- NewGTGuy, on 06/09/2008, -13/+86There is nothing about Jesus in the constitution for the united States of America.
And, very few people who signed it were Christian! - lubrano, on 06/09/2008, -5/+76actually most of the founding fathers were "deists" which is different than christianity and even if 70% of the population is christian 30% are not and thats a pretty big not.
- etherreal, on 06/09/2008, -2/+71"The returning good sense of our country threatens abortion to their hopes, & they [the clergy] believe that any portion of power confided to me, will be exerted in opposition to their schemes. And they believe rightly; for I have sworn upon the altar of God, eternal hostility against every form of tyranny over the mind of man. But this is all they have to fear from me: & enough too in their opinion, & this is the cause of their printing lying pamphlets against me. . ."
-Thomas Jefferson, referring to the Philadelphia clergy during his campaign for the presidency. - mattwalton56, on 06/09/2008, -16/+85I'm a Christian....and McCain is a D-Bag. He wouldn't be a good president.... no matter how you look at it.
- Yarmin3, on 06/09/2008, -7/+72A majority of our founding fathers were not Christians. They were Deists who did not believe in the divinity of Jesus. They believed that Jesus was simply one of the most moral humans beings that ever lived and his life has been muddied by stories of human imagination.
- aliengoods, on 06/09/2008, -3/+68Question: Why the need to include the middle name? Is there a John Thomas McCain running for president that we might confuse him with?
- omnithought, on 06/09/2008, -2/+64Here's a few gems, for your perusal:
"Christianity neither is, nor ever was a part of the common law."
-Thomas Jefferson, letter to Dr. Thomas Cooper, February 10, 1814
"If we did a good act merely from love of God and a belief that it is pleasing to Him, whence arises the morality of the Atheist? ...Their virtue, then, must have had some other foundation than the love of God."
-Thomas Jefferson, Letter to Thomas Law, June 13, 1814
"Among the sayings and discourses imputed to him [Jesus] by his biographers, I find many passages of fine imagination, correct morality, and of the most lovely benevolence; and others again of so much ignorance, so much absurdity, so much untruth, charlatanism, and imposture, as to pronounce it impossible that such contradictions should have proceeded from the same being."
-Thomas Jefferson, letter to William Short, April 13, 1820
"And the day will come when the mystical generation of Jesus, by the supreme being as his father in the womb of a virgin will be classed with the fable of the generation of Minerve in the brain of Jupiter. But may we hope that the dawn of reason and freedom of thought in these United States will do away with this artificial scaffolding, and restore to us the primitive and genuine doctrines of this most venerated reformer of human errors."
-Thomas Jefferson, Letter to John Adams, April 11, 1823
"I have found Christian dogma unintelligible. Early in life I absented myself from Christian assemblies."
-- Benjamin Franklin
"Lighthouses are more helpful than churches."
-- Benjamin Franklin
"If we look back into history for the character of the present sects in Christianity, we shall find few that have not in their turns been persecutors, and complainers of persecution."
-- Benjamin Franklin, An Essay on Toleration
"The blessed Religion revealed in the word of God will remain an eternal and awful monument to prove that the best Institutions may be abused by human depravity; and that they may even, in some instances, be made subservient to the vilest of purposes."
-- George Washington
"If I could conceive that the general government might ever be so administered as to render the liberty of conscience insecure, I beg you will be persuaded, that no one would be more zealous than myself to establish effectual barriers against the horrors of spiritual tyranny, and every species of religious persecution."
-- George Washington, letter to the United Baptist Chamber of Virginia, May 1789 - abctuba, on 06/09/2008, -2/+63Yeah shouldn't he remember it, he probably voted on it.
- JonTheGoose, on 06/09/2008, -3/+63Hey, I was hating McCain before it was cool.
- Mejari, on 06/09/2008, -1/+59...imagining George Bush...
...but less thoughtful...
...less thoughtful...
...less...
...it's like dividing by zero...
O SHI- - happyseamonster, on 06/09/2008, -24/+79Then how come AIPAC owns his ass?
- relic180, on 06/09/2008, -5/+59Personally, I got stuck on the irony of "solid grounding" and "faith" being in the same sentence.
- jaymzdean, on 06/09/2008, -14/+68U.S. politics has reached a whole new level of *****.
- QsheiK, on 06/09/2008, -4/+58Same thing should be asked about Obama...the media loves to flaunt his middle name (which isn't even his middle name to begin with) for some reason...
- Shiftgood, on 06/09/2008, -25/+78"Christian Values" is a euphemism for "Im a white man, we aint gonna let no n*gger in our white house"
/vulgar but true - Coven, on 06/09/2008, -9/+57They're involved in a circle jerk over at a WND article.
- mywhitenoise, on 06/09/2008, -3/+51People hated Hilary because she didn't stand a chance, and she was splitting up the democratic party. I'd rather have Hilary than McCain.
- X86BSD, on 06/09/2008, -2/+47How about all these ***** religious asshat's READ the Treaty of Tripoli! Specifically Article 11. And STOP with this insane campaign of lies about Christianity and the foundlings of this country. The treaty was read aloud and voted on unanimously in congress. *unanimously*. Go away Christians, sell your crazy somewhere else, we already have plenty at the moment.
- defwheezer, on 06/09/2008, -4/+47Sadly, I fear you grossly overestimate the American public in regards to the upcoming election.
- Midtowner, on 06/09/2008, -6/+47It's hard to tell what to make of a video that is so cut-up. Before I read much into this, I'd want to know who the interview was with, the date, and have access to the full interview, not just the parts the editor wants me to see.
- RoroCo, on 06/09/2008, -2/+43Come on man. God is clearly older than McCain. They may have been in the same year book, but McCain is clearly the younger.
- relic180, on 06/09/2008, -6/+43Of course, that isn't taking into account that the vast majority of your 76% are non-practicing and likey only claim to be christian because their parents told them to, or society has pressured them to cease critical thought and pick a side... which in their words would be the side of righteousness, or the side of evil heathens who will burn in fire for eternity.
And don't get me started on the secular who fear repercussions for straying from the pack of sheep. - snotrokit, on 06/09/2008, -7/+42freedom of speech
freedom of relig...... oh nevermind. - Zed00, on 06/09/2008, -14/+48I never really hated McCain until right now.
- Coven, on 06/09/2008, -2/+36His middle name isn't Hussein? That's news to me. Where'd this tidbit come from?
- SpeedSteamBoat, on 06/09/2008, -2/+34Being a Christian is fine.
Believing the US to be a Christian nation and that the constitution is based on Christian values is NOT fine when you are running for president. - thelastwarrior, on 06/09/2008, -9/+40So "solid foundation" means I should have an affair like you did? What an idiot... It clearly states there will be no "religious test" for the office of the president.
- normalkid0615, on 06/09/2008, -5/+36I banged Sidney Mccain and it was good. John Mccain left his handicapped wife for her. What a hero and true American.
- Bilabrin, on 06/09/2008, -1/+32A lot of the founding fathers were deists. If you can shoehorn a deist into the "christian" box than maybe you could support that claim.
