- JohnnyQwest, on 09/16/2008, -6/+34John McCain believes in "The Secret" philosophy of economic policy. Behold the power of positive thinking!
- JoeVet, on 09/17/2008, -5/+31This has been a phenomenal economy for everyone in the top 5% of earners. Its only been bad for the other 95%. That is how the GOP economy works. Its called trickle down (or voodoo economic depending on who you ask). The 95% have been waiting since 1980 for something to trickle down but not a scrap has been spared for the working man yet.
- bitfreak, on 09/16/2008, -5/+28Of course he did. And his Chief Economic adviser (Phil Graham) said this a couple of months ago: "You've heard of mental depression; this is a mental recession".
- inactive, on 09/16/2008, -8/+25Even the most fundamentally sound companies have valleys along with the peaks. Dell, Apple, Microsoft on and on and on... The real questions is whether those collapses are symptoms of a fundamentally unsound economy and why or why not. McCain is saying tha they are not He now needs to explain why.
- inactive, on 09/17/2008, -3/+19It seems Lehman Brothers thought they were fundamentally strong when they gave 5.7 billion dollars in bonuses last year.
- TellyTax, on 09/17/2008, -1/+16I'm not so sure. Sometimes when a plane is going down, the execs jump out with golden parachutes and leave everyone else on board to crash and burn.
- mrno, on 09/17/2008, -3/+17grandpa needs his meds.
- mmijatov, on 09/17/2008, -5/+18If by "strong" you mean "weakest it has been in even *my* lifetime" then you're right on Johnny.
- Bowie, on 09/17/2008, -4/+14
You have a 72-year-old physically handicapped 4-time cancer victim picking a woman with barely more experience than a typical high school principal to sit at the helm of the single largest economic, social, industrial, educational, medical, military, commercial, agricultural, and financial machine human history has ever known.
The historical odds, alone, of a sitting president dying in office are 20%.
Does this sound like good judgement to *anyone* ? - Rubuntu, on 09/17/2008, -2/+12dshPls is living in a state of denial. The story is totally accurate, McCain said on 18 occasions in 2008 that the fundamentals of the US economy is strong.
- Cuchanu, on 09/17/2008, -1/+11Great point. He claims, "I know how to fix the economy" then when people ask him how he starts talking about pork and barrels. What a joke.
Not to mention "I know how to win wars," "I know how to find Osama Bin Laden," etc.
If the last few weeks have taught us anything it's that there is a danger of companies getting too big. I think there is a problem If the government thinks a company is so large and integral to our economy that if it goes out of business we are screwed. - inactive, on 09/17/2008, -1/+10Remember the "peace dividend" after the USSR collapse.
Did you already spend all of that ! - alricsca, on 09/17/2008, -2/+11Yeah looks like the Republicans have used the Borrow and Bailout method to run their social welfare program for the rich. I feel so betrayed. I used to believe that you could depend on that party to avoid social welfare programs. It seems to me now that this is only true until they start to lose money and then, rather than take their licks, they are all about bailouts. Well, darn it, if we have to spend money on welfare I sure want it to go to people who need it for no fault of their own. The only thing worse than a bum living off the system is an irresponsible wealthy person abusing it to remain just a little more wealthy. What really galls me is that, like many savvy investors in both parties, I positioned myself correctly for this down turn. I am being prevented from making money on the way down and then taxed to bailout these fools who bought into the Ponzi scheme in housing. Worse still this is taking money from me that I would have then used to wisely support the recovery later. Literally leaving it in the hands of those who invested poorly to make these same mistakes again. I have been betrayed by the party that was supposed to protect me the good businessman. Who do you think I am going to vote for, I would rather know my freaking enemy than be back stabbed by my so called friends!
- inactive, on 09/17/2008, -4/+13other mccain claims:
"iran is fundamentally 'ducks in a barrel'."
"women are fundamentally lemmings."
"lobbyists are fundamentally just helpful, giving, red-blooded american folks like you and me."
"72 is the new 46.......fundamentally." - Matericia, on 09/17/2008, -5/+13Did his spokesman really say "McCain can call a spade a spade"
After the dustup they made about the lipstick??!!
Either they know not what they do or they are really twisted and using psy-op tactics on the American electorate.
GOP AND PSY-OP TACTICS TO GET VOTERS
Never let reality interfere with your game plan.
Never freak out or blink when you see a really big issue
Never reveal to them just how out of control you are
Never worry about what they are thinking.
They must know be taught that they can't guide the thoughts in ALL our heads to THINK and ACT the way they want us to! - xenuxenuts, on 09/17/2008, -0/+8no, but Bush did.
- KibblesnBitts, on 09/17/2008, -1/+9So, this means you're old enough to have been around for a great deal of Alan Greenspan's tenure as chariman of the federal reserve....I'm sure this means you also remember how everything he said was considered to be economic gospel by virtually everybody. I'm sure this means you would still agree with him to this day. I'm sure you've heard that he said very recently that this is the worst economy he's ever seen.
- chrissku, on 09/17/2008, -2/+9Please elaborate Senator McCain. We're all waiting. Let's hear your ingenious plan to get us out of this mess. Oh wait, you're one of the guys that got us into this mess in the first place Mr "deregulation". Go ***** yourself McCain, and take Caribou Barbie with you.
- pintomp3, on 09/17/2008, -0/+7funny how the captains of industry never go down with their ships.
- rjyanj, on 09/17/2008, -0/+7the mccain campaign is claiming that john mccain meant "the american worker is strong.."
good koolaid they got there.. heh.
i wonder what the campaign meant when they said american economic problems are mental and that we're just a nation of whiners? sounds more of a reference to "workers" than anything else they've put out.
john mccain is more and more like george w. bush everyday.
a ***** walking joke. - Cuchanu, on 09/17/2008, -1/+8Trickle down economics was the biggest ***** Reagan scam. And that is saying a lot. The funny thing is that despite all evidence to the contrary most Republicans still think this is the way to go.
- pintomp3, on 09/17/2008, -0/+7"I know how to win wars" i always found that one interesting. which wars has he won?
"I know how to find Osama Bin Laden" why won't he tell us then? - SpinningHead, on 09/17/2008, -1/+7Supply-side was also used by Hoover with similar results. Its an absurd idea. The guy who owns the widget factory will not hire more people to make more widgets if the bulk of the population doesn't have the money to buy said widgets. All it is is corporate socialism.
- inactive, on 09/17/2008, -5/+11Yay! I'm strong! I'm a fundamental!
- ironhide, on 09/17/2008, -3/+9You know, I can clam that a house has a good foundation, doesn't mean the roof won't cave in.
- crugg, on 09/17/2008, -5/+11So basically what you are saying is you are racist?
- wendelgee2, on 09/17/2008, -0/+6Did you read that article on jawboning? It doesn't at all say what you claim it does. It doesn't say that saying the economy is strong will make it strong through the power of consumer confidence.
It says:
This approach came to be known as "jawboning" (sometimes known as "moral suasion") — an unofficial but usually quite effective technique of arm-twisting to prevent labor and businesses from getting big wage or price increases, which works essentially by the implicit threat of future Government "regulation" of their industry that would or could impair their profitability. - neoq36, on 09/17/2008, -0/+6unemployment is up
foreclosures are up
cost of living keeps raising
taxes are increasing
people are spending less and businesses are closing
companies are sending our jobs oversees
consumer credit is getting worse and worse
government spending is out of control
and the US debt is what now
what part of the economy is good? - magus_melchior, on 09/17/2008, -0/+5'"I know how to find Osama Bin Laden" why won't he tell us then?'
I think we know his answer: Attack Iran and Pakistan for harboring him.
What? Evidence? They're right there!
As for the question of why he didn't tell us for 7 years, he'll probably blame that on the Democrats a usual. - inactive, on 09/17/2008, -2/+7We are fundamentally screwed and have
fundamentally known it for decades ! - kevinkris, on 09/17/2008, -6/+11You must be earning more than $250,000.
Obama is Pro-middle class. - LiberalKid, on 09/17/2008, -0/+5Sounds like clarkkentski is a repoman.
- nycjap, on 09/17/2008, -1/+6Do you categorize being a klansman as being a "small business owner" so you can deduct the cost of dry cleaning your hood?
What racist nonsense. - nickels, on 09/17/2008, -4/+9Wow, clearly you aren't a racist.
You're a piece of ***** moron with racist thoughts, but clearly not a racist.
Small business owner huh? Making nooses and hoods? - SpinningHead, on 09/17/2008, -0/+4That's ludicrous. The only benefit of the war was lend-lease and that didn't start to fill our coffers for awhile. If you're talking about manufacture of war materials, I seem to recall that involved large government programs and spending...just like the New Deal programs. If anything, the New Deal saved capitalism and prevented a Bolshevik uprising here. Every nation is 2 meals away from revolution.
- Cuchanu, on 09/17/2008, -1/+5That didn't take long for the brainwashed Republican fan of Trickle Down Economics to show up. You can call me names but there are plenty of economists that feel that trickle down/supply side economics are *****. I agree. You don't: that's fine.
But when you tell somebody to "grow up" maybe you shouldn't start your argument with "You my friend are ***** stupid."
It makes you look, "***** stupid." - yumtummy, on 09/17/2008, -0/+4"Try getting a job in IT for $5/hour and get turned down. Try working for free and getting turned down" did you ever think that this might be because you have a criminal record or just the worst resume ever
- DarkprinceArmon, on 09/17/2008, -0/+4I'm a democrat who is afraid that McCain believes the fundamentals of the economy is STILL strong.
- Bowie, on 09/17/2008, -0/+4The prime rate means nothing with a weak dollar. 2% of *what* ?
- Bowie, on 09/17/2008, -0/+4Joe Biden doesn't have a foot in the grave, and would actually be helpful, instead of sitting around looking pretty.
- crugg, on 09/17/2008, -1/+5He later said that he was talking about the American people fundamentals.
- borez, on 09/17/2008, -3/+7The Fed has bailed out firms to the tune of over a $trillion this year alone, completely magicking the money out of thin air and dumping it into the economy, So yeah... it's in brilliant shape.
/sarcasm - wendelgee2, on 09/17/2008, -0/+4Actually, I have, and what the hell does that have to do with the fact that you clearly misstated the point of the wikipedia article?
I know you probably don't live in the reality based community, but there are some economic problems that you can't fix with your Jedi mind tricks. - Valujet, on 09/17/2008, -1/+5How about some ***** honesty. Is that too much to ask.
Talking up the economy when it is collapsing all around you just makes you look like an idiot.
"Financial institutions are collapsing all around the country, the economy is in really big trouble"
"Naw we're ok. McCain said everything is fine." - kingmanic, on 09/17/2008, -0/+4Unfortunately a lot of the "growth" we saw in the last 5-10 years or so was based off of the mortgage market inflation of home values. It both drove construction, credit spending, and consumer spending. So in effect it was the engine of growth for 2000-2009, just as the tech bubble drove spending from 1990-2000.
- Elranzer, on 09/17/2008, -0/+4The foundation of capitalism is property ownership. Currently, property ownership (mortages, real estate, etc) are what's in the *****. So, we're in the *****.
- wunksta, on 09/17/2008, -0/+4the people running for office and their corporate buddies, obviously
- ericjohnson0, on 09/17/2008, -0/+4Oh, they've already tried to get me banned... didn't work.
yay me.... or something like that... :) - magus_melchior, on 09/17/2008, -0/+4"Deficits don't matter."
