- vault, on 06/28/2008, -12/+64He didn't make a wife beating joke. He was talking about the loaded question, "have you stopped beating your wife yet?"
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Loaded_question
"An example of this is the question "Are you still beating your wife?" Whether the respondent answers yes or no, he will admit to having a wife, and having beaten her at some time in the past. Thus, these facts are presupposed by the question, and in this case an entrapment, because it narrows the respondent to a single answer, and the fallacy of many questions has been committed"
That's all he was talking about. It wasn't a joke about domestic violence.
But you Huffpo types knew that already and dugg the story anyway. - qdkk, on 06/27/2008, -15/+47McCain to Cindy: "At least I don't plaster on the makeup like a trollop, you *****."
Seems like there is a pattern here. - WhiteRaven, on 06/28/2008, -6/+36Um... people, do you not get the joke? He was referring to cliche attempts to trap people into un-answerable questions. The classic example is...
"When did you stop beating your wife?" There's no way for someone who has never beaten anybody to answer this question.
I honestly can't believe people don't understand his point. Are you being intentionally thick? - jbdobd, on 06/27/2008, -16/+39John McCain: ***** First
- Ilyanep, on 06/28/2008, -3/+25Buried for ridiculous.
You guys do realize "When did you stop beating your wife" is the classic trick question?
EDIT: Looks like I got beaten above :( - tcbishop12, on 06/27/2008, -20/+38The real problem and disconnect for McCain is that McCain can't seem to grasp how unfunny and offensive his comments are to all of us, but especially -- to women.
- tcbishop12, on 06/27/2008, -16/+30John McCain: What's worse than a Male Chauvinist Pig?
Reporter: I don't know, Senator, what?
John McCain: A woman that won't do what she's told! - Inflammo, on 06/28/2008, -5/+16Everyone practice your very best false outrage face.
- Ryan166, on 06/28/2008, -3/+13You can't expect 16 year old nerds to get a reference like that.
- norm7, on 06/28/2008, -2/+12agreed, i hate mccain, but this is a pretty absurd thing to pick apart
he was obviously just responding to the fact it was a loaded question
everyone who's getting so outraged about this
do you REALLY think that this has ANYTHING to do with domestic violence
or are you using the fact that his statement was just barely over the PC threshhold to launch an attack
seriously, pick your battles or you look like party robots - bxblox, on 06/28/2008, -3/+12You are brave to openly perform feats of logic in the realm of digg.
- Ilyanep, on 06/28/2008, -1/+10I'm 16 and I feel like I'm one of five who got it.
- vault, on 06/28/2008, -1/+10The headline does not say "McCain is Old and Out of Touch," it says "McCain Makes Awkward Wife-Beating Joke."
He didn't make a joke at all. All he did was use the classic example of a loaded question. Has it occurred to you that the expression may be used all the time, that it frequently shows up in any kind of political debate across the spectrum, and that *you* just don't hear it often because *you* don't keep up with that sort of thing? - SillyRabbits, on 06/28/2008, -2/+11No, it's an indicator of how out of touch many in the public are with what has been a VERY commonly used retort in politics, debate, news media, law, etc. The world doesn't need to revolve around people that are offended because of their own ignorance. It's not an old, outdated expression. It's used on a daily basis. Maybe Ophra doesn't use it, but it's quite common in circles where people don't have to be spoon-fed logic to understand what is being said. There is absolutely NOTHING about that saying to be offended by. If you are, you simply don't understand what it's being said.

- thirdcoastborn, on 06/28/2008, -0/+7this country elected bush twice.
- Mejari, on 06/28/2008, -2/+9um... would you ever vote for someone from 4chan for president?
- theprogrammer, on 06/28/2008, -2/+9What this guy said. This is a well-known expression that indicates a loaded question. It is neither a joke, nor a positive comment on domestic violence. Being ignorant of this expression, as many seem to be, is analogous to being ignorant of the definition of a "big word". I.e., it isn't McCain's fault if you aren't well-read.
- xexx, on 06/28/2008, -5/+11You're an idiot if you actually believe that.
- notoneofus, on 06/28/2008, -0/+6If you really believe that, you have never been in any kind of relationship whatsoever.
- whodoes, on 06/28/2008, -5/+11Voting Obama myself. really truly. Im VOTING FOR OBAMA !!!!
...ok ? got that.... ?
ready.......... vault is 100% correct. even though Im NOT voting for McBush... this is a ***** story and its the sort of distraction "news" that the right churns out to my never ending frustration. If Obama had said it we would be yelling at Fox and Friends' Steve Douchie for spending all morning on it.
nothing to see here people. move along, move along.
OBAMA '08 - Barackalypse, on 06/28/2008, -4/+10Apparently Barack Obama hasn't done anything noteworthy or inspiring lately, so we're back to the old standby of picking apart statements not at all related to the business of running the country by opponents of his. Good job for elevating the level of awareness on important political issues and the candidates prior records and positions.
- Mejari, on 06/28/2008, -2/+8Yeah, because a man who beats the ***** out of his wife really wouldn't mind if she left, and definitely wouldn't threaten her with greater harm if she tried to leave.
/sarcasm - Hazardc, on 06/28/2008, -3/+8I would never vote or mccain, but this article and most of the intitial comments are ridiculous. He didnt do or say anything wrong here. There are plenty of reasons not to like the guy. this isnt one of them.

- siszam, on 06/28/2008, -4/+9You seem to have zero real life experience. Why don't you go to the kitchen and ask mommy to make you sandwich and let the adults talk.
- madfrogurt, on 06/28/2008, -4/+9Stop focusing on inane *****. There are bigger issues at stake than offcolor jokes.
- norm7, on 06/28/2008, -1/+6how can you call the types that coined this example knuckle-draggers? if anything, the example is meant to emphasize how EXTREMELY TABOO wife-beating is.
if there are people out there getting offended by this (I sure haven't met any women who cringed in terror upon hearing it, and i've heard plenty of them using it - and i'm not just talking about "out of touch" grandmas"), then they need to reset their political correctness meter and leave their whole culture of victimization behind, or at least save it for the places that they ARE victimized (these places are certainly not in short supply).
speaking of which, you might want to check your own PC level, because you just attacked McCain based on his age, and then you just stereotyped the navy and the fraternity system.
I'm a fraternity man who's voting for Obama - fortunately, I'm not so goddamn sensitive to freak out anytime someone says something that might remotely reference any group i may be affiliated with. - steelersfan7roe, on 06/27/2008, -18/+23Great role model.
I'm sure there's no pattern here, calling his wife a *****, making jokes about beating her, chuckling when someone called Hillary a bitch.
Just like there's no pattern of McCain repeating 4 times that AlQuida was being supported by Iran.
These are all just coincidences. - shawnanigans, on 06/28/2008, -5/+10What do you tell a woman with two black eyes? Nothing, you already told her twice.
- toetagger, on 06/28/2008, -16/+20He's trying to appeal to conservatives.
- DD2CC2U, on 06/27/2008, -17/+21Why don't you really say how you really feel about women, John.
- Gbobrt4, on 06/28/2008, -3/+7Dugg for that thumbnail picture of McCain.
- SilentRamble42, on 06/28/2008, -1/+5Patriots = people who rose up against and declared war on their leaders. When will people learn this?
- wonderbriefs, on 06/28/2008, -0/+4John McCunt called his wife a *****.
- Hincapie, on 06/28/2008, -1/+5yeah, its a blast
- CatalystDM, on 06/28/2008, -3/+7He was trying to reference the classic example of the Complex Question fallacy "When did you stop beating your wife?" I realize he deserves to be attacked and all of that, but stories like this make the Huffington Post look like it is desperate to find a flaw in McCain and, in turn, could even help McCain with some voters.
- SilentRamble42, on 06/28/2008, -3/+7You mean the guy who got crucified for saying "bitter?" Meanwhile McCain goes all but free for calling his wife a ***** in front of reporters.
- masterm1nd, on 06/28/2008, -7/+10... or you don't seem to grasp a figure of speech.
- SevenTwo, on 06/28/2008, -0/+3No ***** for Old Men
- txchica, on 06/28/2008, -0/+3Do you really want to go there? Should I start listing all the terrorist attacks that occurred under a Democratic Pres? Where should I start? OK, bombing of the World Trade Centers in 93, bombings in Saudi Arabia in 95 and 96, embassy bombings in Kenya and Tanzania and lets not forget the USS Cole. And it's hard to pin the Twin Towers on the Repub admin when it takes years to plan that kind of attack, years that were under the Clinton admin. And because we had such a weak response to these attacks Al Qaeda decided we were weak willed and unwilling to stand for a prolonged, bloody fight. As far as they're concerned all they have to do is wait us out. And they'd be correct if the far left had their way..
- harpwn, on 06/28/2008, -0/+3one extremely successful troll
- inactive, on 06/28/2008, -16/+19Shut the ***** up with your political correctness you filthy *****. If Obama said the same thing you guys would say he was just joking and that the media was overreacting.
- Ilyanep, on 06/28/2008, -5/+8Why the hell would anyone vote this comment down? It's true.
- Barackalypse, on 06/28/2008, -3/+6"I never beat my wife, but why don't you step forward and I'll show you what I do to impolite wankers who suggest that I did?"
That's a pretty good response, provided it is followed up by a roundhouse kick to the head. - marabout40, on 06/28/2008, -18/+21There's nothing funny about domestic violence.
Domestic violence is a serious, widespread problem in this country.
Estimates range from 960,000 incidents of violence against a current or former spouse, boyfriend, or girlfriend per year to three million women who are physically abused by their husband or boyfriend per year.
Around the world, at least one in every three women has been beaten, coerced into sex or otherwise abused during her lifetime.
Nearly one-third of American women (31 percent) report being physically or sexually abused by a husband or boyfriend at some point in their lives.
John McCain should be ashamed of himself for making such a disgusting statement and any Hillary Clinton supporter who now claim they'll vote for him over Obama is a fool.
John McCain has a long history of sexism and mysogyny. Here are a few highlights: http://www.dailykos.com/story/2008/6/27/18273/7397 ... - Jordan117, on 06/28/2008, -0/+3Agreed 100%. I'm about as big an Obama supporter as one can be around here, and even I can say that this "controversy" is willfully ignorant garbage. McCain may be a Republican, and may have some poor stances on important issues, but he's still a halfway decent man, and doesn't deserve to be slimed by such ridiculous accusations.
- Rikkochet, on 06/28/2008, -2/+4Maybe not, but that's not McCain's joke. I think he's a crazy old fossil (it's sad we have to preface comments these days), but his comment was a play off the loaded question "Do you still beat your wife?". It's the past generation's version of "Do your parents know you're gay yet?".
His point was simply that the question was loaded and unfair, and he made a pop culture reference to state that.
He's an imbecile, but this isn't a warranted attack on him. - notoneofus, on 06/28/2008, -4/+6I shudder to think what McCain is "qualified" to do.
- Dundasbro, on 06/28/2008, -0/+2Reminds me a little of Australian politician Alexander Downer, who ran under the slogan "The things that matter". He talked about his prospective government's domestic abuse policy, and jokingly referred to it as "The things that batter". Completely ruined his chance at being Prime Minister, there was a pretty big furore over it as it was a big issue at the time and not one that many people in the public thought should be joked about.
In hindsight it was actually a little bit funny, but politically stupid. -
