McCain: Iraq was the ‘first major conflict since 9/11′
thinkprogress.org — McCAIN: The fact is we had four years of failed policy. We were losing. We were losing the war in Iraq. The consequences of failure and defeat of the United States of America in the first major conflict since 9/11 would have had devastating impacts throughout the region and the world.

- PolishLogic, on 07/25/2008, -7/+4Buried for not having a point.
- nelsonjs, on 07/25/2008, -3/+6The point is that he was wrong. Afghanistan was the first major post 9/11 conflict. Please try to pay attention.
- PolishLogic, on 07/25/2008, -4/+1I'd hardly call the operations in Afghanistan "major". We sent in only a fraction of the troops we sent to Iraq. It was a decent-sized battle operation, but it wasn't major. Hell by your assessment, Somalia, Panama, and Grenada were major too. If it had been a "major" operation, Afghanistan wouldn't be in the same shape today that it was prior to the invasion. Opium production at an all-time high, Taliban influence doing nicely, it's almost as if we never stepped foot in the country to begin with.
Hit 100,000 troops and then we'll talk. - vexingmodstwo, on 07/25/2008, -3/+2Afghanistan was not a major conflict.
- Waiting2awake, on 07/25/2008, -1/+3Polish and Vex, and anyone else who doesn't think that Afghanistan isn't a major conflict should tell that to the hundreds that have died, on our side alone. I am thinking it is major enough to those families. Don't you? What happened to all this supporting the troops?
- TheOtherOne135, on 07/25/2008, -0/+2Afghanistan certainly SHOULD have been major. After all, that's where the people who attacked us on 9/11 were. Excuse me - where the people who attacked us on 9/11 STILL ARE, because we pulled our guys OUT and sent them to Iraq, which wasn't involved in 9/11. . . .
- PolishLogic, on 07/25/2008, -4/+1@Waiting2awake
Supporting the troops does not equal calling a conflict major. I supported our troops in Panama, was that a major conflict to you? I supported our troops in Somalia and Bosnia, were those major conflicts to you?
Grenada was major to the families of the personnel involved there, so do you echo that sentiment?
You're a ***** idiot, no two-ways about it.
@TheOtherOne315
Yes, is should have been major, but that doesn't change the fact that it was not prior to our invasion of Iraq. Once forces redeploy and the troop size increases, it will then grow into a major conflict.
