- jforjools, on 04/11/2008, -17/+212McCain's grasp of economics is now in question, along with his grasp on reality.
- umbriago, on 04/11/2008, -11/+172The magic dust of senility.
Democrats: tax and spend.
Republicans: spend and spend, and make the Democrats tax when we're done.
See how it works? - Apokalyps2547, on 04/11/2008, -9/+148The myth that Republicans are fiscal conservatives never ceases to amaze.
- inactive, on 04/11/2008, -13/+115About $3.2 trillion (over one-third) of our $8.9 trillion total national debt has been accumulated during the first six years of the Bush Administration.
Over 90% of the total national debt has been accumulated under the past three Republican administrations – Reagan, George Bush Sr., and the current George Bush. As of March 14, 2008, the total debt attributable to those three Republican Presidents is $8.45 trillion. - neognostic, on 04/11/2008, -13/+97Those pesky tax and spend Republicans just can't seem to get their budgets balanced. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_debt_by_U.S. ...
- Coven, on 04/11/2008, -5/+64They're worse than "tax and spend". Republicans are "borrow and spend".
- peticsu, on 04/11/2008, -7/+66would I be stepping on a political landmine if I were to suggest that these blunders are correlated to his age?
its funny how he always has these "senior" moments when theres no teleprompter in front of him... - wishninja, on 04/11/2008, -1/+40no I think it is because he is a dumb ass. Being a war hero and being rich got him where he is today not academics. Yea he is a war hero but that doesn't keep him from being a dumb ass.
- inactive, on 04/11/2008, -7/+39wait...deficits are Al-Qaeda...right ...or was it the Sunni's...dammit...where is Joe Lieberman when you need him...i need a nap!...signed John McCain..
- myansaphone, on 04/11/2008, -1/+30It's just now in question? He already said he "doesn't really understand economics"
- inactive, on 04/11/2008, -9/+36Its not just spending, it's stupid spending. Reagan spent tax money on battleships FFS.
- stoanhart, on 04/11/2008, -2/+28Yeah, and debt went down on his terms.
Pres: Regan Regan Bush Bill Bill Bush Bush
Debt: ^ ^ ^ v v ^ ^
party: R R R D D R R - omnithought, on 04/11/2008, -4/+29How about we just pay him to not be President.
- cobbwobbles, on 04/11/2008, -4/+28Honestly, the GOP couldn't find anyone more electable than this? Roflcopter
- inactive, on 04/11/2008, -1/+25And missile defense systems.
- Ganja420, on 04/11/2008, -0/+23Yea its too bad we don't have a party that is for LESS government.
*****.... Bush's federal government is twice the size of Clinton's. - xkorbin, on 04/11/2008, -2/+25He just did an analysis of http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_debt_by_U.S. ... I believe.
- jforjools, on 04/11/2008, -4/+27Well, all I can say is the economy is in the *****' ***** and here's a canddidate trying to show off his economic know-how and (1) thinks that Reagan was awesome and (2) possibly doesn't have a basic understanding of simply economic terminology (ie- "de-fi-cit")
I don't expect the next president to solve all (or possibly any of) the economic woes...but I sure as ***** want someone who has a better understanding of it than a college freshman. - inkswamp, on 04/11/2008, -1/+23I knew someone would give me a reason to repost this. Hold off on the Carter bashing. He was, by all quantifiable measures, a better president in terms of the economy than Reagan. This isn't a matter of opinion. Here are the facts.

He was a bad president. - LinuxGalore, on 04/11/2008, -1/+18Yeah, I remember when the Whitehouse sacked a public servant for saying Iraq would cost $200 billion when Bush Jr was saying it would cost $50 billion. Now they are waving $3.2 trillion around as the new number and the bean counters are talking about $9 trillion by 2012 for the war. So you really have to feel sorry for the public servant who mentioned $200 billion.
http://www.abc.net.au/rn/backgroundbriefing/storie ... - benbos, on 04/11/2008, -0/+16And of course, we don't have any comparable military expenses that McCain wants to continue.
- lead2thehead, on 04/11/2008, -1/+17Have they ever considered... maybe... not spending so much money?
- joewashere, on 04/11/2008, -10/+26just to point something out. there was a democratic congress with reagan and bush sr...
and then when everything got better with clinton...there was a republican congress
and congress really controls the money - RoloTomasie, on 04/11/2008, -1/+17Increasing government spending considerably whilst decreasing tax revenue, IS NOT GOOD FOR THE ECONOMY. YOU ARE A DAMN IDIOT!
I might be a Republican if they would adhere to their economic principles, rather than disgrace them continually . - SuperMoses, on 04/11/2008, -4/+20It's official, he's senile.
- ronaldmonster, on 04/11/2008, -2/+17Seriously what the *****? Does the republican party not even care anymore?
- Rodman930, on 04/11/2008, -1/+15Yeah. McCain was in the bottom 5 of his class at the naval academy. I don't care how hard your college is, if you're in the bottom 5, you're probably not very smart. I'm sure he got in mostly because of his Admiral father anyway.
- sublingo, on 04/11/2008, -0/+14Guess what conservatives - you're running a giant, massive tax and spend social program. Tax Americans, spend in Iraq. Healthcare, education and welfare opportunities to Iraq! But no social programs in America please, that's liberal nonsense. WTF.
- Deltablade, on 04/11/2008, -7/+20These Republicans are NOT true conservatives. Truly a shame.
- cheesypasta, on 04/11/2008, -2/+15I think Christians blindly vote republican just because of the abortion issue. And there are a lot of Christians in America. A co-worker of mine who is a devout Christian was telling me of a sermon he heard basically praising Bush for standing up to Saddam whom he likened as the next Adolf Hitler. I just wanted to punch him in the face... but I decided to keep my job instead.
- ThndrShk2k, on 04/11/2008, -1/+14Your fault for wanting lower taxes. Now you know better.
[/sarcasm] - Pherdnut, on 04/11/2008, -1/+14Economics lesson from a democrat: The deficit represents the degree to which we spend more than we earn. IIRC we started off with less than a trillion in debt and ended with 3 trillion under Reagan.
He would have had to have done a lot more than triple the deficit for that to happen when you consider that the original debt was accumulated over the course of US history. Outspending the Soviets into the poor house was a creative solution to be sure but I'm not sure why the party of fiscal conservatism continues to call the guy a hero when he basically redefined what a Republican is, which is any chump willing to ignore all other considerations (that clearly includes spending) to favor an unconditional tax break for the rich. - ScottMitchell, on 04/11/2008, -1/+14But he was asked how he would BALANCE THE BUDGET and he said he's use policies that TRIPLED THE DEFICIT.
- sinrtb, on 04/11/2008, -1/+14How is it people so ignorant still manage to breathe, let alone breed?
- inactive, on 04/11/2008, -2/+15You're a jingoistic *****.
- jforjools, on 04/11/2008, -1/+13FACT = The 80's sucked if you weren't already rich. The ONLY thing that trickled down was sweat and blood.
- publiclurker, on 04/11/2008, -3/+15He "won" by simply being the one around when they collapsed. Human nature will be the end of any communist system, you just need to make sure they don't try going out in a blaze of glory.
- inactive, on 04/11/2008, -3/+15LOL, is that how you rationalize it? Pretty weak.
- SuperMoses, on 04/11/2008, -3/+15/sarcasm ?
- inactive, on 04/11/2008, -7/+19"Reagan was clever innovative and did pull America out of a recession much worse than what we are in now. "
WTF? Were you alive in the 80s? - inactive, on 04/11/2008, -2/+14"Reagan increased tax income with a tax cut"
Just curious... when was the last year that tax revenue decreased? - inactive, on 04/11/2008, -2/+14Carter's mess? Carter cleaned up the Republican's stagflation. The high interest rates under Carter ended the YEARS of dismal economic failure of the Nixon/Ford administrations. It cost Carter his job, but it was the right thing to do.
- inactive, on 04/11/2008, -1/+13*****. The Soviet Union was doomed before Reagan ran. Reagan only ***** us. The Soviets ***** themselves.
- bsdboy, on 04/11/2008, -4/+15Well, considering where our deficit has been going with the current administration then I suppose the Regan style of 'Big Spending' is somewhat of a relief.
- inactive, on 04/11/2008, -0/+10I got it here (PDF): jec.senate.gov/Documents/Reports/09.12.07%20National%20Debt.pdf
But the numbers are readily available, as xkorbin pointed out. - libertao, on 04/11/2008, -0/+10The Emancipation Proclamation wasn't good?
- inactive, on 04/11/2008, -1/+11Can you provide the figures to back up your claim?
- inactive, on 04/11/2008, -1/+11Honestly, at this point, it'd truly surprise me if he had a grasp on his bowels and bladder.
