For months McCain and the GOP has been hammering Obama for not "finding out what the folks on the ground" think. If the Dems were to put together some ads showing the parallel between Obama's 16-month plan and Maliki's "withdraw by 2010" opinion, they could score some serious points in what arguably the public views as McCain's greatest strength (war on terror)

It forced the candidates to bet the majority of their time and money to just a few contests. McCain was broke at the time, so was forced to coast. Then, when each successive candidate underperformed and dropped out, only McCain was left.

Because the media had completely buried him in September. But McCain was willing to go to New Hampshire, and hit EVERY town, speaking in person. Meanwhile, Rudy was running the stupidest campaign in recent history, despite being the media darling.
Add in the repub winner take all, and McCain squeeked out a couple of wins, but took all the delegates.

What happened was BECAUSE McCain was closer to the center than his fellow GOP candidates, he was able to pick up the votes of independents.
