I know this wasn't the main point of your post (and I can't tell you how refreshing your point of view is), but I'd like to take this opportunity to try to clear up this misconception since I see it on a regular basis.
It's easy to fall into the trap of thinking that a trait which prevents people from reproducing will be eliminated from the gene pool. But, remember that even genetic diseases that always result in death before puberty persist in the population. For the simple case of a trait that's passed on through a single recessive gene, two parents who carry one copy of the recessive allele have a 25% chance of producing a child who has two copies. The parents are healthy, but the child is not. That child doesn't survive to reproduce, but each of the parents' children has a 50% chance of receiving a single copy of the recessive allele. Thus, we have new carriers who may not even be aware of the fact that they carry this gene.
