Many Kentucky voters misinformed about Obama's faith

thinkprogress.org — A poll of likely Kentucky voters finds that, “despite heavy national media attention about Obama’s faith, more than half of likely Republican voters — 54 percent — and one of every four Democrats in the state do not know that the Democratic presidential nominee is a Christian.”

  • scottknick, on 10/27/2008, -1/+11The GOP operatives and some Hillary-ites that spread this crap are certainly despicable. But there is also such a thing as wanton ignorance. People who cling to the belief that Obama is a secret Muslim do so because it soothes them, it makes reality fit their preconceptions. It makes more sense to them than the proposition that the best choice for President of the United States is a dark-skinned man with a non-anglo-saxon name.

  • Sonan, on 10/27/2008, -0/+5I wish Obama were an Atheist, but at least he doesn't seem totally driven by his faith like some other politicians. I wouldn't care if he were actually a Muslim, as long as he wasn't an extremist. I'd rather have a "normal" Muslim as president than some crazy Christian trying to do "God's Word."

    I'm in Kentucky and my mother-in-law (also in KY) is worried Obama is a Muslim. She's also voting for McCain because she likes Pailin, if that tells you anything.

  • aussiejan, on 10/28/2008, -0/+1I think a lot of people cling to the notion that Obama is a Muslim because Muslims are supposed to be feared (according to the Republicans) so the perception is that it is acceptable to vote against someone because he is a Muslim but it is unacceptable to vote against someone because he is black.
