- JonnyCash, on 10/12/2007, -2/+467"Earl Adams said his 14- and 16-year-old sons were "greatly disturbed" after finding the book, titled "The Whole Lesbian Sex Book." Adams said the book caused "many sleepless nights in our house."
HAHAHA, I'll bet...sleepless nights! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+361Under the Dewey Decimal System "Military History" would be around section 350.
Sex education is around 650.
So they were accidentally looking in entirely wrong aisle, perhaps even the wrong floor of the library, in the sex section, for military academies. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+247"I SWEAR, Dad, I thought it said Lebanon!"
- pjack91, on 10/12/2007, -7/+208Scissor me timbers!
- tazx, on 10/12/2007, -5/+169I. Books and other library resources should be provided for the interest, information, and enlightenment of all people of the community the library serves. Materials should not be excluded because of the origin, background, or views of those contributing to their creation.
II. Libraries should provide materials and information presenting all points of view on current and historical issues. Materials should not be proscribed or removed because of partisan or doctrinal disapproval.
III. Libraries should challenge censorship in the fulfillment of their responsibility to provide information and enlightenment.

"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances." - 1st Amendment to the US Constitution.
“Restriction of free thought and free speech is the most dangerous of all subversions. It is the one un-American act that could most easily defeat us.”—Supreme Court Justice William O. Douglas, "The One Un-American Act." Nieman Reports, vol. 7, no. 1 (Jan. 1953): p. 20.
"It is the responsibility of libraries to guarantee and facilitate access to all expressions of knowledge and intellectual activity, including those, which some elements of society may consider to be unconventional, unpopular or unacceptable." - Ottawa Public Library Policy - tidu, on 10/12/2007, -9/+146Dewey Decimal System, what a scam that was.
- ACrazyGerman, on 10/12/2007, -10/+143"I don't even understand how two women can make love, unless they like scissor or some thing."
- Smog2k, on 10/12/2007, -2/+126Time to renew my library card....
- bcasper1, on 10/12/2007, -1/+122i think its ***** up that this douch bag is trying to get 20,000 bucks from the PUBLIC LIBRARY. who does he think pays for the thing, the ***** town. What a selfish ***** in my opinion.
- Renork, on 10/12/2007, -5/+121All books have legitimate artistic and educational uses. Something can be learned from even the things some people would regard as hateful, disgusting, horrifying, whatever.
No thoughts or ideas should ever be discarded, especially in a library. - Hiki, on 10/12/2007, -5/+121"Sleepless nights = fap fap fap"
Brilliant deduction, Sherlock. I was confused about the 'winks' and 'nudges' that I was getting from the op. - dgblackout, on 10/12/2007, -4/+118that's a damn good reason to go to the library.
- eonblue, on 10/12/2007, -0/+115I hope his sons don't find the internet!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+114"the father said that God was speaking to his heart and helped him find the words that removed it"
... and how will the $20,000 help "God"? - HunterTV, on 10/12/2007, -3/+112"I've been licking this carpet for an hour and I don't feel like a lesbian."
- Gazpacho, on 10/12/2007, -7/+110So, two women make love by scissoring or something?
- Puppetfunk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+88He's suing a PUBLIC Library? One funded by Taxes? Fantastic. Takes peoples tax money because your Horny sons were looking for Sex Books in the library.
- manicleek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+85"He said the teenagers found it while looking for material on military academies"
*****, they found it whilst looking for a book on lesbian lovemaking - adcat, on 10/12/2007, -6/+91"Don't you know the Dewey Decimal System?", asked Conan the Librarian.
- lagrange, on 10/12/2007, -1/+83Did cool 70s porno music play when the book was opened?
That would have been sweet. - Dumbledorito, on 10/12/2007, -3/+80So did God tell him that he needed that twenty grand, too? I would think any "hurt" should be "healed" by his supernatural legal counsel, not the library.
And the book should go back. If you don't like ideas, don't go where books are. It's that simple. - tristan55555, on 10/12/2007, -2/+65Sorry but the library is a public institution paid for by all of our taxes. This means that the separation of church and state exists in this case. Therefore, his religious beliefs really have no meaning when it comes to having books removed from the library simply because they violate his personal religious myths and disrupt the indoctrination of his kids.
- helinism, on 10/12/2007, -9/+68But of course they were greatly disturbed! After searching through books about military academies no doubt they wanted a gay sex guide and wound up looking at two naked women. Must have been a total shock to the system!
- thatsmyaibo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+48I agree. Plus how does a monetary compensation make up for seeing lesbians? This guy just wants a new car or something. Greedy *****.
- indraneel24, on 10/12/2007, -5/+50bow chicka wow powww
- TheReport, on 10/12/2007, -1/+44"He said the teenagers found it while looking for material on military academies."
It always ceases to amaze me how much we treat sexuality in this country as a fowl and ugly act while murder, war, and ***** action flicks with b list actors are considered ok to take kids to the theater as long as no ***** are shown. ***** puritans. - florin, on 10/12/2007, -2/+45"God was speaking to his heart" = complete and utter moron
- heavensblade23, on 10/12/2007, -26/+68Sleepless nights = fap fap fap
- TheAkolyte, on 10/12/2007, -1/+43This is so much *****. They found a book about lesbian sex, and decided it was a good idea to open it up and look at all the pictures?
- roadkillkid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+40Personally, I'm totally cool with your daughter being a lesbian.
- SultanTravi, on 10/12/2007, -2/+41^ re tazx's post
Digg is great because mixed with all the hilarious comments, you'll find gems of rational argument. Entertainment and education at the same time. - Quakes, on 10/12/2007, -4/+42This is just ***** ridiculous. Seriously. I have no other words.
A big warm "***** you" to the guy who sued. Ignorant *****. - Killerah, on 10/12/2007, -1/+37This is bull crap! What "Christian" blames his own lack of parenting skills on the library, proceeds to sue them, and then claims that "God was speaking to his heart" about it! That doesn't sound like the kind of Christian the Bible describes.
- ACrazyGerman, on 10/12/2007, -8/+42If you Don't get the scissor thing watch this Southpark episode.
http://allsp.com/l.php?id=e159 - GMorgan, on 10/12/2007, -3/+34Libraries are for holding books in general unless the library is labelled as a speciality library. The sole purpose is not purely reference.
- tkcom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+30"God was speaking to his heart..."
...telling him to get a lawyer. - Noah0504, on 10/12/2007, -6/+36@Amorrn: Perhaps you need a TV to watch South Park.
- slicedoranges, on 10/12/2007, -7/+37Religious morons.
- Haplo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+31"Under the Dewey Decimal System "Military History" would be around section 350."
They were actually looking for "The Risks of Inbreeding"... which I guess would be around 650. - maehem, on 10/12/2007, -0/+28Looking for books on Military Academies... right..... When I was fifteen I knew exactly where
the 'nude art' books were. My parents thought I was making a beeline to the computer books
the whole time. I think they just got caught in the act. - stellamaris, on 10/12/2007, -0/+27Like someone else said, the section of the Dewey Decimal system about military (300's) and sex (600's) are very far apart. Even in the smallest libraries, they would be at least a few aisles apart. These kids were looking in the sex section for something interesting. As a librarian, I get kids all the time who rent out R-rated or "unrated" versions of American Pie and the like. If a parent wants to restrict access to certain materials, we put a note on their account which shows us when their card is scanned. It's not my job to tell the kids they shouldn't be watching that kind of stuff, in fact, I'm not allowed to tell someone what they can or can't get out. It's the parent's responsibility to know what materials their kids are looking at, and to call us and put a restriction on their account.
- STKD, on 10/12/2007, -1/+26I believe firmly that we shouldn't be teaching kids about military academies via libraries.
Strangely though I don't demand those books be removed either. Well, unless I can claim damages myself... - jedicor, on 10/12/2007, -4/+28Because that's the general idea for Digg? You post things you find that interest you.
- dweeb79, on 10/12/2007, -1/+23If I had kids that were looking at lesbians making love. I would be like "Thank you Jesus!!!"
- Silentnite85, on 10/12/2007, -0/+21"Honest dad, we were looking for the military version of the bible and love your parents book. Third edition. I don't know how we wandered halfway across the library into the beaded back room and found a book on lesbian sex. This is crazy."
Also, don't look under our bed, because that's supposed to be an instructional guide to praying. Somehow turned into a playboy.
What is this world coming to, when boys can just accidently find porn?? I had to scour the library for the old National Geographics back in my day, hoping for a shot of a boob.
The boys should consider themselves lucky. - TheAkolyte, on 10/12/2007, -2/+22@euphemizeme
The Bible is a book. - Dumbledorito, on 10/12/2007, -1/+19Indeed I would. I'd have the same concerns for her as any daughter (is she happy? Is she befriending/loving good people, etc.). Why would her sexual orientation change how I feel towards her?
- nestafett, on 10/12/2007, -2/+20thank you! finally someone attacks the man and not his religion!
i am a christian and i have no problems at all with lesbian sex, in fact i quite enjoy hearing about it! =) - nestafett, on 10/12/2007, -8/+26glad you don't judge over a billion peoples beliefs based on the actions of a few, that would be prejudiced and idiotic, eh?
- stellamaris, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17Yes, fiction books usually say "appropriate for ages 10 and up, 12 and up, 14 and up", etc. Nonfiction books are just information, though, and available to anyone. My point is, don't drop your kids off at the library for hours and be surprised when they come home with books about sex and drugs, things kids are interested in. Be involved in their lives.
