Man Arrested For Death Threats To Jon Stewart, Nancy Pelosi, Olbermann
news.yahoo.com — A man was arrested and accused of mailing threatening letters laced with white powder to Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi, David Letterman, Jon Stewart and others. FBI agents took Chad Conrad Castagana, 39, into custody Saturday on charges of conveying false information and sending threats via the U.S. mail, the bureau said in a statement.

http://www.democratgiftshop.com/cgi-bin/store/store.cgi/1585028665/left/596384 - InetRoadkill, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15While throwing his sorry ass into Gitmo for some waterboarding and endless detention without trial would offer a great deal of satisfaction in its poetic justice, you can't justify it and pretend to support the Constitution at the same time.
Bushco and his supporters do an enormous disservice to the Constitution by pushing for special laws which strip (alleged) terrorists of all legal rights. Essentially what they are doing is belittling the Constitution and saying that constitutional law is incapable of dealing with terror suspects. They give the Constitution too little credit.
I don't think the Constitution is the problem here. I'm more inclined to believe that the current administration is both too damn lazy and largely too incompetent to operate within the framework of the law. So they deal with this by altering and/or circumventing the law to cover their own shortcomings.
It's unfortunate that the retarded Freepers can't see that the Constitution is not the problem. For reasons unknown they continue their push towards tyranny and despotism in the name of freedom. Why they can't (or refuse) to see this contradiction is beyond me.
The best thing we can do with this guy is to show our faith in the Constitution and try him in open court with full rights. Then convict his sorry and let him spend the rest of his life in prison for domestic terrorism.

Its interesting how everyone has assumed this guy is guilty with no trial or evidence. Even though he may be nutty, WE have yet to see any evidence of his guilt.
From the article, "The FBI said federal agents watched Castagana, of Los Angeles, walk from his home to a public mailbox Thursday and deposit several letters."
That in itself is pretty shaky, lets wait and see what evidence will be presented at the trial to show guilt BEFORE sticking a label on him.
Lets support the constitution (and thus America) by letting due process take its course. - pabster, on 10/12/2007, -21/+6Typical liberal hypocrisy.

It's amazing that since the suspension of habeas corpus people are willing to toss out the "terrorist" moniker to a criminal. Crime can be construed as a form of terrorism. People who live in places that are crime-ridden live in the terror that they or someone they know and care about may be a victim of crime. Does this mean we should label all criminals terrorists and throw them in jail without evidence or a trial? - ccheath, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3@ willcode4beer:

But we do condemn . i.e. I condemn.
Be they some ecology nuts vandalizing... OR mass murder Tim McVeigh blowing up buildings or rightwing wackjobs arguing to killi hundreds of millions of innocent people . or rightwing wackjobs advocating torture or rightwing wackjobs preemtively attacking countries or rightwing wackjobs that try to take our constitutional rights away or....
You see I didn't even consider myself "leftwing" until this adminstration... I really didn't even think about the issue and (in the past) generally looked at both parties as quite similiar in actions actually.
So.... how many Democrats are arguing "kill kill kill" these days? How many Democrats are responsible for alienating every nation on this planet? How many Democrats are talking away my constitutional rights? (Leiberman was even booted from the Democrats for being a bit like that. )
Bottom line judging by ACTIONS (not words) these Republicans seem to me that they like to destroy rights and argue the use of violence at every term. Modern Democrats seem to look for peaceful compromises , working with the international community and to protect individual liberties.
Of course they ain't perfect but they sure look a hell of alot better than the (many ) Republicans who have basically turned into violent religious nuts themselves. They hate Hispanics, Muslims, Homosexuals, the ecology minded, liberals/socialists, the Chinese, Europeans...heck... pretty well anyone that isn't themselves.

No Republicans were ever targeted. A few years later Senator Frist claimed that someone sent him ricin in the mail, but it turned out that it was just a letter on a piece of white paper and part of the bleaching process to make the paper white caused a false positive on the tests authorities now run on mail sent to Congress. After more than 5 years the Bush Administration has failed to find and prosecute the Anthrax Terrorist who killed American citizens in an act of terrorism after September 11. Also after 5 years the Bush Administration has failed to find and eliminate Osama bin Laden. I won’t be surprised if Bush uses a presidential pardon to get this terrorist off.

No. I thought it was pretty clear, but I'll spell it out for you the Anthrax Terrorist targeted media and so did this terrorist. The Anthrax Terrorist targeted those most critical of the Bush Administration such as Daschle and Leahy and so did this terrorist who sent threatening letters to two other Democratic members of Congress.
“It was Dr. Philip M. Zack, maybe now he'll actually be tried in a court for his crimes.”
I’ve been watching the news of a court case against anyone behind that, and in five years FBI still hasn’t filed charges against any suspect that I’ve seen not Zack or even Steven Hatfill whom the FBI also claimed was a person of interest in the case. I’ve seen no news of any sort of prosecution beginning (correct me if I'm wrong by posting a link to a news report of such) so your claims that someone is soon to be tried for this seems a bit presumptuous.
“You make this sound like a huge conspiracy…”
No, but I think there is a pattern here where those critical of the Bush Administration seemed to be targeted by these acts of terrorism on American soil by two different terrorists. Republicans keep saying that Democrats are either terrorists or are supporting terrorists and yet since September 11, 2001 it’s been those who voice disagreement with Bush who receive these letters which all agree are acts of terrorism committed in the US. I applaud the FBI on their apprehension of this particular right-wing wacko, though. - IrishJoe, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3This article from AlterNet points out that we have had many many right-wing acts of terrorism on US soil (a number of them bombings) that the media either doesn’t report or greatly downplays. These are true acts of terrorism in the US. Why don’t we hear about them on the nightly news?
http://www.alternet.org/story/43182
In addition to the bombings, murders and kidnappings, and assaults many of these right-wing attacks have been, you guessed it, envelopes of white powder with messages like “You have been exposed to anthrax. ... We are going to kill all of you.” This was an exact quote of a letter sent to an abortion rights group. What I wanted to point out was that this is a pattern of behavior of right-wing extremists who target those they disagree with. - geronimo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Dr. Philip M. Zack had a motive(right wing and militant zionist), had access to anthrax, it's very odd that the FBI has not yet charged him, regardless of your politican presuasion, he fits the bill very well. Not many people have such access to weapons-grade anthrax.
- JJsays, on 10/12/2007, -24/+2Dems lied their ass off to get elected, hell they had to get republicans to run for them, so they are going to have to expect this kind of thing.
When you lose 20, 000 men trying to pullout of Iraq, you are going to wish you had stayed and finished the fight. Lots of people will be angry for the loses occurred during a retreat.- JohnnyOso, on 10/12/2007, -8/+2http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iraqi_Freedom#Deaths
just 20,000? - ardenr, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12Dunno about you (you could grow some sense), but unless the Dems ***** up as bad as BushCo, I'll be blaming the ones who got us into this mess: Bin Laden and his good friend the Republicans, who were kind enough to take away our freedoms for him.
- IWriteCode, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6And what are those stats? Due to "poor healthcare"? What exactly does that mean? Due to insurgency? So we're doing the insurgency?
What about Saddam and his retribution killings against the Kurds. Iraq has several "killing fields" we've discovered from Saddam since we been there. Are you saying Iraq would have been better off with Saddam still in control? Give me a break, not even your fellow dems are saying that. - maram500, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5@JohnnyOso
Wikipedia is never a reliable source, primarily because anyone can go in and edit any article they want. I could go in and change the figure from 20,000 to 20 million in the blink of an eye and some fifth-grader in Bupkis, New York would use that number in a social studies report as though it came from the Pentagon.
It's just a bad idea. - inajeep, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Retreat? Are we walking through Bagdad naked blindfolded in order to retreat? Your figures are dumbfounding. I'd go on to poke holes in your theory but to be honest, I've given up hope on you.
- JohnnyOso, on 10/12/2007, -8/+2http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iraqi_Freedom#Deaths
- jellygraph, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12Lol, seriously, what a moron... who expects to get away with doing something as blatantly idiotic as this?
- giveer, on 10/12/2007, -3/+16Living an hour walk from the American border, I see all your tv, and after seeing all the Election attack ads that, in a round about way, said "Vote for the Dems if you hate America and want to give the terrorists a break", I'm not surprised things like this happen.
Not blaming the ads, of course - this guy was bonkers long before then, the ads were tell-tale examples though I'm sure. - MYarms, on 10/12/2007, -8/+2wait wait wait wait.... How did the FBI find out who was sending the letters if they had a fake return address on them. Sure they could know the area around where they were mailed because of the postmark but how did they get enough info to be able to sit out and wait around for this guy to send some more mail?
- nhaas, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6People talk, partial/full finger prints, email, family - you name it they can use it. It could be just plane investigation.....
- airship, on 10/12/2007, -12/+5This guy is obviously a typical right wingnut neocon Republican, and all of them act this way all of the time.
After all, that's the conclusion they jump to when a liberal does something crazy. - pintomp3, on 10/12/2007, -5/+9so he will get a presidential pardon and a medal of freedom?
- aantonop, on 10/12/2007, -4/+22Why is the FBI not charging him with domestic terrorism?
Why is the FBI, who are tracking and infiltrating animal rights groups, Quakers and anti-war protesters, the FBI who have put these groups on terror lists NOT charging this man with terrorism? He is innocent until proven guilty, but the CHARGE should not be just sending "threats". This is intended to terrorize and if they have probably cause to charge, they should charge him as a DOMESTIC TERRORIST. Give him habeas and a fair trial, but WTF is this "sending threats" *****. If he sent this to G. W. Bush and he was brown he would have a hood on his head and be in GITMO. Oh of course, only leftist are terrorists. I guess right wing nutjobs are just "passionate".
Remember terrorism is a technique used to cause fear in the population for political purposes, not just the murder of innocents.- an0nymous, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8I think your question about why he is not being charged with terrorism is a valid one. I'ld like to see those laws thoroughly tested out.
You kind of lost me with the caps and the, erm ..stridency.
Good finish though. - geronimo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Terrorism is in the eye of the beholder.
- rootneg2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2no kidding.
what kind of treatment do you think he would have gotten had he sent the same to DeLay, Foley, O'Reilly, and Ann Coulter or other similarly ranked people on the right as opposed to the left?
- an0nymous, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8I think your question about why he is not being charged with terrorism is a valid one. I'ld like to see those laws thoroughly tested out.

"I am a lifelong Conservative Republican .
I have an Associates Degree in the Science of Electronics .
Ann Coulter is a Goddess and I worship Laura Ingraham and Michele Malkin .
English is the langauge of the United States of America- - our Declaration of Independence and our Constitution are written in the langauge that expresses our civilized freedoms .
Spanish is the language of Banana Republics, beyond that it belongs in a European country ."
I may be stepping out on a limb here, but I'm gonna have to have to say he's a Republican. - floatingpoints, on 10/12/2007, -5/+7"Didn't take long for lefist Diggers to paint this guy as the typical Republican."
Haaaaaaahaha, you guys always make yourselves look so stupid. "The left just blah blah blah".
Read the post above me. The dude was a well established and outspoken Republican. No one painted anyone to be anything except what they really are.
Nice try though, Mr. Blind "in denial" Right Fan #39,000,000 :) - Ndiggnation, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4@Andreo You do realize that the character Colbert plays on the Colbert Report is obviously a satirical character meant to poke fun at right wing pundits?
- freff, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5@Ndiggnation
Are you trying to suggest that this guy committed a crime in the name of satire? - diluuk, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3The key word in jav1231's post was "typical." i.e. This is how one republican thinks so that must be how the average republican thinks, or an Islamic radical is a terrorist so all Muslims must be terrorists.
Secondly, andreo's profile material seems sketchy at best. A quick google turns up a man named Marc Costanzo's page at http://www.freerepublic.com/~marccostanzo/. The man who was arrested is named Chad Conrad Castagana. What do these two men have in common? - jav1231, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1floatingpoints: "Haaaaaaahaha, you guys always make yourselves look so stupid. "The left just blah blah blah"."
Uh...note the word "typical." Idiot.

- colinmhayes, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2Really, what does he accomplish by threatening comedians?
- timefreeze, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6It's not hard to realize that comedians like Stewart and Colbert were rooting for the Democrats in the elections. Perhaps the guy just figured they were part of the "problem." They're on TV and they have huge viewing numbers, they had to have persuaded someone that hadn't done their own research. That angers some people and makes crazy people crazier. :P
- colinmhayes, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1crazy, you say?
- geronimo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3@timefreeze
Sounds like you are legitimizing terrorism, perhaps you have sympathy for him. Judging by your posts you are a card carrying member of the right wing. So tell me, why do you hate America? I assume you also have no problem with people explaining why Osama Bin Laden planned 9/11. US support for Israel, etc etc. - mirunit, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I would disagree with you that Jon Stewart is just a comedian... He is a political figure, like it or not, and has a number of viewers who take his satire as fact.
@geronimo
So terrorism exist now? - freff, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1timefreeze: "It's not hard to realize that comedians like Stewart and Colbert were rooting for the Democrats in the elections."
Looks like they weren't the only ones that wanted the Democrats to win this last election.
- wiremonkeymommy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6nothing substantial to add... just that I echo others calling for a fair and impartial trial, full rights as afforded by the constitution, then, if found guilty sentenced accordingly!
maybe a few lawyers have commented... but I would think 5 years should be sufficient, parole after 3 for good behavior and LOTS of counseling!!
glad they caught this guy!! - animefx, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7Ann Coulture somehow justifies this in 3... 2... 1...
- mirunit, on 10/12/2007, -9/+1I am shure she will come up with a justification for this, just as you would come up with a justification for the destruction of private property to make an environmental point.

- levilove, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Boy, those poor Republicans have really taken it up the ass the past week or so. This Republican is about to take it up the ass for the next five years. Ouch!
- Jolene, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5How DARE he threaten Jon Stewart! I'm gonna kill him!!!
Its odd... Doesn't he know that famous people don't open their mail..? Their interns do it. Thats why they have mail rooms.
And I agree with everyone saying he should get a fair trial. - Herkimer56, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Do any of you people see how this "Us vs Them" mind set is killing what's left of this country? It's not important if this man is a Republican or a Democrat, Right wing or Left Wing. What matters is that he is a criminal. He is accused of making threats and sending suspicious mail that was designed to make people think that they were poisoned. If he is convicted of this he should receive the harshest penalty possible. What we, on both sides of the political aisle, should be doing is thanking whoever turned him in before someone was really hurt. It's blind hatred that causes people to become warped like this and I'm seeing some of that hatred here on both sides of the argument. We need to learn to respect the other person's point of view and stop dividing ourselves over every issue that comes up. One thing that we can all agree on is that this was a terrible, stupid crime and the this person, if convicted, should be punished. If we can start there then maybe we can find other issues on which we agree and we can actually start accomplishing something other than deadlock. We're in trouble, people, and all of this sniping and arguing isn't going to resolve anything.
- jedikv, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4@Herkimer56
agreed.
lets just drop the partisan ***** from both sides, you all idiots for turning into a right v left mud-slinging contest.
WE should agree that this man is a psycho who should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law no matter what dumb ideology you blindly follow. - Equalizer, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2Civil War, it's coming... Fortunately, I side with the NRA and not the hippies...
