You sure they'd be disappointed? - wilkil69, on 07/07/2008, -0/+1As just about anyone who opens their eyes can see, this country has steered off course and is treading in awfully dangerous waters (both domestically and on the foreign front) at the moment. It doesn't surprise me at all to think the founding fathers would be disappointed with where we are now.
- mikestrawman, on 07/07/2008, -0/+1John Adams might not be disappointed, as his alien and sedition acts are back in the fold...
Jefferson, however, rolls in his grave.- beebelo, on 07/07/2008, -0/+2I think they'd both be disappointed in hindsight.
Yes, Adams signed the acts, but when you look at the big picture of his life and politics, he was a great man, just like Jefferson. They both had their bad points. Adams, though a Federalist and a man who originally favored a more royalist hierarchy in federal government, was completely unpretentious in he personal life. He lived modestly, spent modestly, did his own work, and abhored slavery. Jefferson, on the other hand, lived richly and spent personal and government money laivshly. Jefferson saw nothing wrong with slavery, despite his beautiful libertarian prose.
Both men had a grander vision than the current president could ever hope to understand.
