- mediablitz, on 05/06/2009, -17/+538And my marriage STILL hasn't changed or crumbled! Neither of my kids turned gay overnight. The world continues on, a little better than it was yesterday...
- scottknick, on 05/06/2009, -12/+362Doubtless the conservatives will be hailing this as yet another victory for state's rights. Right?
- Phylter, on 05/06/2009, -18/+286America, bit by bit, dragged kicking and screaming into the 20th century... Not a typo.
Well done Maine! - paintgrl, on 05/06/2009, -19/+247Yes and another state turns away from bigotry. These are the times I love my Country the most. Go USA!
- Powerfan5000, on 05/06/2009, -11/+1895 down 45 to go!
- ProjectGSX, on 05/06/2009, -12/+177Separate but equal is a farce. Well done Maine.
- mediablitz, on 05/06/2009, -6/+123One more state that doesn't have to worry about Joe the Plumber visiting. It is worth it, just for that!
- Terasiel, on 05/06/2009, -12/+118This story should seriously be reaching the front page by now. Maine has joined a so-far very small group of states that are championing human rights in the US. They should be proud.
- johnnick, on 05/06/2009, -5/+108Just wait! You never know how Teh Gay Agenda will work to undermine your relationship and subvert your children into membership in NAMBLA!
/s added for those with an insufficient sarcasm detector (not that there are any of THOSE on digg...) - THETEH, on 05/06/2009, -9/+108As a Mainer, I gotta say that this is awesome. Hopefully more states will follow suit.
- charm803, on 05/06/2009, -7/+105Thanks, Maine.
I'm from California, and I am hoping that this pressures my state into being less ignorant and more tolerant, because bigotry is ugly, even if it has fake boobs and blond hair.
It's very UN-American to treat Americans as second class and very UN-Christian to judge. - DouglasQ, on 05/06/2009, -7/+98Anyone else just looking for heavily buried comments made by right-wing nazis?
- inactive, on 05/06/2009, -6/+97I open this story, and the local tornado siren goes off. Clearly it's a sign of the apocalypse. Gay marriage is going to destroy the country!
Or, it could just be that it's Wednesday at 1:00, and they always test the tornado siren on Wednesdays at 1:00. Nah, I'm goin' with apocalypse here. - Konrad9, on 05/06/2009, -6/+86This is a victory for everyone.
- sarahlee, on 05/06/2009, -7/+87Congratulations Maine! Your nation is proud of you!
- dagnabbit, on 05/06/2009, -2/+82And you're going to Hell for eating shellfish.
- papashawn, on 05/06/2009, -5/+83I guess the Gay Storm was moving in a northeasternly direction.
- FritoPendejo, on 05/06/2009, -7/+75Gay.
- ljoreilly, on 05/06/2009, -1/+68I think this is a victory for states rights. If the people of Maine want this, I don't see a problem.
- Diefree, on 05/06/2009, -7/+71Yet another state turns away from the small minded bigotry of the anti-civil rights movements.
- exped100, on 05/06/2009, -3/+66Have you heard of the Full Faith and Credit clause of the Constitution?
- heysuburbia, on 05/06/2009, -2/+62This has nothing to do with YOUR morals. The law and this country are not taking queues from the bible.
- Hetman, on 05/06/2009, -1/+59We do not live in a theorcracy. No one is forcing you to be gay and or participate in a gay marriage. It has nothing to do with you.
- tgjerusalem, on 05/06/2009, -7/+64Come on, New Hampshire and Washington DC!
- tgjerusalem, on 05/06/2009, -2/+55Yea. It's a slightly masochistic guilty pleasure.
- dunderballer, on 05/06/2009, -5/+58It is inspiring to think that those in the next generation in Maine who find themselves with a different orientation than their heterosexual parents can grow up with the same family objectives as their heterosexual peers. One cannot ignore the effects on life choices and self-image of living in a society that declares you less deserving of family than others.
- PlusTheBear, on 05/06/2009, -9/+61Admirable, but it's that sort of attitude that let other minorities throughout history be persecuted for their right to exist. You're not on a side, there are no sides, there's just people who want to be free and those who oppose it.
- iljets10, on 05/06/2009, -7/+58Looks like Maine beat New Hampshire to the punch.
- viker7, on 05/06/2009, -8/+57In your face Iran!
- mediablitz, on 05/06/2009, -4/+53Come back when you have a coherent argument. Your fear is seeping through.
1/10 troll. - Diefree, on 05/06/2009, -1/+50Yea cause bigotry is such an outstanding moral, bet you don't like those uppidity minorities either right? I will now demonstrate your "morals" as a joke.
I assume you are a Christian correct? Well have you sold off all your belongings? Do you eat shellfish? Have you stoned someone to death for blasphemy? Do you believe in polygamy? Do you wear clothing made of more than one type of fabric? Have any tattoos or piercings? Support slavery?
Answer these questions then check your bible you might be surprised. - ranxerox76, on 05/06/2009, -9/+57In 20 years when gay marriage is legal throughout the civilized world.... we will look back at these times... and feel such shame.. just like we look back at the 50's and earlier and remember how we treated the black folks....
I'm not gay and I personally feel anyone who is against gay marriage might as well be a part of the KKK. These loser have so many dumb reason, not to want to allow it.... but seriously how does it really hurt them... THey'll tell u it will destroy parenting... but again seriously we've had men and women marrying for thousands of years and look how crazy we are...it's not like the world is perfect now.. if it was, I'd say screw the *****... and then I'd secretly screw them just like the red-neck closet suckers who hate gay marriage - bwolf180, on 05/06/2009, -11/+58Fabulous! (in a gay tone)
- UsQueersdotcom, on 05/06/2009, -5/+51@dunderballer: I am 54. I grew up way up in upstate New York. Almost immediately upon the full realization early on that I am gay, was the realization that it meant I would never be a father or get married, and would absolutely, certainly burn in Hell. I know you're right, that had an emormous impact on how I saw my future, and the negative choices I made early in my life that had profound effects later on. I could not explain any of this to my family of course, and simply began trying to escape to California (known then as the "land of fruits and nuts") at 14.
- Diefree, on 05/06/2009, -3/+49Bigots are out in force today. Simply put you are wrong, your right not to be offended ended when you entered a public space. I feel sorry for your children being raised by someone that wants to steal the rights of people who's only crime is to be in love.
- matt487, on 05/06/2009, -6/+51Come writers and critics
Who prophesize with your pen
And keep your eyes wide
The chance wont come again
And dont speak too soon
For the wheels still in spin
And theres no tellin who
That its namin.
For the loser now
Will be later to win
For the times they are a-changin.
Come senators, congressmen
Please heed the call
Dont stand in the doorway
Dont block up the hall
For he that gets hurt
Will be he who has stalled
Theres a battle outside
And it is ragin.
Itll soon shake your windows
And rattle your walls
For the times they are a-changin.
Come mothers and fathers
Throughout the land
And dont criticize
What you cant understand
Your sons and your daughters
Are beyond your command
Your old road is
Rapidly agin.
Please get out of the new one
If you cant lend your hand
For the times they are a-changin. - inactive, on 05/06/2009, -1/+46And yet DOMA still stands in direct opposition to that. It's a cut-and-dried case of a law that clearly violates the constitution, and yet it still stands, which baffles the hell out of me.
- SpiritOfRock, on 05/06/2009, -2/+46Gay Marriage is kind of gay, when you think about it.
- kismetropolis, on 05/06/2009, -5/+49Go, Maine, Go!
Much respect for treating gay Americans as Americans rightfully so. - inactive, on 05/06/2009, -7/+51I knew I loved Maine, not just for the fantastic vacations I have had there, but for the quality of her people. I am proud of you Maine!!!!
- brandita, on 05/06/2009, -6/+48I'm glad the pace of legalizing gay marriage is finally picking up. Great news for Maine! In other news Washington DC approved recognizing gay marriages from other states.
- WhoaABlueCar, on 05/06/2009, -4/+45i wish my state(california) could successfully achieve this equality
- heysuburbia, on 05/06/2009, -1/+41Worst point trying to be made, ever?
Seriously dude, I'm as straight as ***** arrow and have tons of gay friends that don't make me feel uncomfortable at all. The only men who are uncomfortable around a gay man or woman are those who are not comfortable with their own sexuality. - DankBuddz, on 05/06/2009, -3/+42I'd love to have your explanation of how a same-sex lifestyle is dysfunctional.
Don't forget, include logic. - heysuburbia, on 05/06/2009, -0/+38His point is meant to equate something absurd with something reasonable, then when you agree that it's absurd to marry cows you therein agree gay marriage is absurd. I believe it's a form of the straw man argument. Beat him/her at their own game, tell your teacher he is helping terrorists win by being against civil liberties, if we take away gay couples rights what's stopping us from taking away woman's rights just like the terrorists do. Sounds ridiculous, right?
- lepetitmousse, on 05/06/2009, -0/+37what if there was a tornado on wednesday at 1:00pm?
- LethalGeek, on 05/06/2009, -3/+40Pssss, lots of people don't believe in your Pearly Gates. A whole mess of them live in Asia for example.
- CorruptDragon, on 05/06/2009, -4/+41Proud to be from Maine today. Congrats to all the people that helped get this through.
- inactive, on 05/06/2009, -0/+36I know! It freaks me right the hell out!
