Let's keep in mind all of the mud-slinging from all sources that have been thrown at President Bush over the last 7 1/2 years. Most people probably don't need examples, but if you do, just check out the ugly signs at any one of the protest marches pictured over at Zombietime.
Mr. Bush has the maturity and dignity to not let it affect him. He has kept his cool in public and that is a smart move. He and his staff are wise not to give the nutroots any more publicity than they already have via the hate-America MSM.
Mr. Bush has gone on about the business of protecting and defending America. Even the most disgusting things said about him are either ignored or dismissed by him (or his staff); recognizing that people (severely disturbed as they are, IMO) have the right to free speech - even if it's terribly offensive.
Now, a man running for the office has been actively attempting to "fight the smears" against him and his campaign via a website.

The interesting thing was how totally CLUELESS many of the callers were ("his health care, and stuff like that, makes this true" was one of the more profound comments).

Sure, the New Yorker was attempting to satirize some of Obama's more rabid and fringe detractors. I can buy that. But at what cost?
The attempt to cast Obama as some sort of dangerous Muslim and the portrayal of his wife as a gun wielding "angry woman who has it in for whitey"- even though these beliefs and behaviors seem ridiculous, in reality the New Yorker does the Obama campaign no favors by alienating the ignorant and foolish who believe and behave in this manner. It will, in fact, cost Obama votes he can ill afford to lose.
After all, though they are far more likely to encounter difficulties interpreting written instruction at the polling booth, or apprehending the subtleties of satire, our current president seems to indicate that a sufficient percentage of the mentally deficient manage to figure out the voting process and cast their ballots right alongside everyone else.
If the Obama campaign were to do the truly politically savvy thing, they would not be decrying the New Yorker's use of racially charged and tasteless imagery.
