- grinsy, on 10/11/2008, -4/+276McCain should have also addressed the outright racism toward Arabs from that supporter. "Ma'am he is not an Arab AND do not confuse Arabs with religious extremists. There are but a handful of Muslim extremist, terrorists. However, there are millions of honest, decent, Arab-Americans, ma'am, and you would be well served to get to know a few."
- DeliciousWolf, on 10/11/2008, -8/+218Finally, John McCain is responding to the campaign hatred toward Obama, my respect for McCain went up a little bit...oh, wait, his campaign has been instigating this from the beginning, nevermind. McShame.
- vi0letruby, on 10/11/2008, -6/+109This is all a very, very scary development and, whilst *we* are mostly tuned in, mainstream is not. Mainstream News: Show the vids of the hate-filled mob-mentality. Show it, don't talk it. This is base-off chillingly evil. Chillingly.
Obama may indeed be elected, but if his fate is one shared of Lincoln's, we, his lovely family (and the world) will be fu#ked. Totally fu#ked. We need good and true and positive *leadership*. In every sense of that word and concept.
I have *no* respect for McCain/Palin. Their campaign has turned truly, truly vile and all honour McCain ever had has been squandered for pure power-mongering. Palin never had honour, nor do I believe she even understands the concept. My hope is she will die a lonely one-off greedy politician's death and not come back in 4 years. Never, ever come back. - flipmoe, on 10/11/2008, -4/+84I think this is Palin's influence at work here. She is not, nor ever will be, ready for the national stage.
Winning an election in Alaska using smear-tactics and 'rabble-rousing' is entirely different to getting on a national ***** stage and telling people that it's ok to be a racist *****. This is how civil wars are started my friends. - chrisjj, on 10/11/2008, -3/+64Of course the whole 'Arab' episode was infused with racism, not only from the ignorant questioner but also from McCain himself who implied that being 'Arab' is something that is bad. McCain did not refute the notion that being an Arab is in any way different from any other human being - this reveals a lot about McCain's narrow-minded personality.
- algaeturd, on 10/11/2008, -1/+54I agree. But it's a little too late to start trying to teach decency lessons to these people. They're not just rough around the edges, they're rough from the inside out. It just shows a huge crack in our nation...that such a huge portion of citizens still believe these archaic notions.
- Blasphemous88, on 10/11/2008, -4/+54When your base supporter is either an evangelical, a racist, a religious bigot, etc. your rallies are no better than the clan meetings some of these members might attend. They respond to fear and hate. The negatives of the world are what drive them and make them who they are.
This sort of thing is to be expected in a year when the man winning in the polls is black. It's a sad reflection of what this country's grass roots culture looks like. It also shows just how sad a country we are when people will stay supporting McCain when his decisions in VP's is clearly designed to draw in female votes with no regard for the possible consequences the country might face should she ever have to take the reigns. - mnpilot, on 10/11/2008, -16/+62Either you are irretrievably Stupid or completely Racists to support McCain. I ask their supporters, which one are you?
- redcolumbine, on 10/11/2008, -2/+48If you court sharks, you get sharks. Denial for public consumption aside, this is the McCain/Palin base - ignorant extremists.
- totallyhigh, on 10/11/2008, -2/+42excellent video from maddow's new show
shes on point - xboxgamer91, on 10/11/2008, -4/+43Somebody get Aunt Tessa her pills, she went to a political rally again!
- inactive, on 10/11/2008, -0/+39Too little, too late.
- okayokayokay, on 10/11/2008, -4/+41Thank God for Rachel Maddow! Someone with actual intelligence on TV.
I'd love to see her and John Stewart sit down to dinner. - netneutrality, on 10/11/2008, -2/+35The election can't come soon enough.
- blackinthmiddle, on 10/11/2008, -0/+29"I gotta ask you a question. I don't not...uhh...believe in...I can't trust Obama. I, I have read about him and he's not, he's not, he's a...a...he's an Arab!!!"
Amazing how easily one can manipulate sheep into scary, scary human beings. These people are to be feared. McCain has created a monster that has now gone further than even he's willing to go. Or at least I'm trying to give him that credit. Part of me says that he's only trying to calm people down now that he realizes his nasty tactics aren't going to work anyway. - allenwrench, on 10/11/2008, -2/+30Yes, that's how I interpreted his "contrition" as well- "no, he's not one of those horrible Arabs" (paraphrasing).
How do I say this... you don't say that out loud!
Real class, this guy. - alleged, on 10/11/2008, -2/+26These McCain rally nutjobs have lost any inhibition they may have had.
McCain very decently reminded this dingbat the Obama is a Christian, but still managed to insult millions of Arab-Americans in the process by not pointing out that not all Arabs are Muslims, and not all Muslims are terrorists.
What a wasted opportunity, and what a degenerate party the GOP has become. - webwatch, on 10/11/2008, -1/+25Its really sad to see the mainstream media echoing the accusations of McCain but not really deconstructing it. The hatred whipped by McCain and Palin rallies could potentially lead to dangerous consequences.
This article in Huffington describes how vilification of Yitzhak Rabin by the far-right Israelis ultimately led to his assasination - http://www.huffingtonpost.com/daniel-lubetzky/yitz ... - mshtml, on 10/11/2008, -3/+26And people wonder how Martial Law could happen with Americans killing and caging other Americans...
- belebih, on 10/11/2008, -1/+24It's good to see that McCain is showing signs that he is as disgusted by this a most of us. But like many have said, it's probably too little too late. He's burned too many bridges in his efforts to try to get the support of the loonies, and now he's gonna start losing the loonies by trying to win back the respect of the decent and rational people who used to support him. Not many are gonna be left in the end.
- stopbrorape, on 10/11/2008, -0/+22McCain has to realize that all these negative campaign adds are fueling this horrible hate against Obama. McCain shouldn't of ran a negative campaign or picked Palin as his VP.
- kingofinternet, on 10/11/2008, -3/+25i say both.
- Jambi, on 10/11/2008, -1/+23Yeah, Palin's like you know, totally qualified to hold public office...she's like, smart and *****. Don't mess with hockey moms if you know what's good for ya! PS: Mister Putin, consider yourself on notice, Sarah Palin ain't gonna take none of your foolin' around with nukular submarines at the North Pole, or all them experiments with bears, and bees...and bears with bees in their mouths...she's a patriot, and yer Ruski ass is in for a kickin'. Remember, she knows where you live, she can see it from her house! Freedom isn't free! Palin '08!
- stonecircle, on 06/11/2009, -2/+23There is a difference betweening "opposing" someone and making death threats, racial slurs, and hate-filled remarks that could thrust us into instant replay of Nazi Germany.
"Getting in their faces" is being misinterpretted. It's one thing to confront and to question - which this statement was meant to imply - to challenge another's opinion, but certainly not to challenge with anger or hate. - ByrcheWroot, on 10/11/2008, -1/+21I've been wondering, are his rallies organized by the Klan?
- wonderchemist, on 10/11/2008, -1/+21McCain knows Obama is probably going to be the next president. The last think McCain wants is someone to pull a Charles Guiteau on his behalf.
- alleged, on 10/11/2008, -1/+20You're in denial. I feel for you, and don't blame you for being bitterly disappointed in your guy's biggest supporters.
- dinot, on 10/11/2008, -6/+25"irretrievably Stupid or completely Racists to support McCain"
I'd like to think that most of his supporters are supporting him for sane reasons and it's a pity that the loudest ones are the most retarded. This whole demonizing the other side isn't going to get us anywhere, though. - jj2me, on 10/11/2008, -0/+17All those old Western movie lynch mob scenes always seemed too pat, they couldn't really happen, could they? Can people really be induced to mob hate that easily?
Rovian tactics are showing that they're more than electioneering. They're dangerous. - pdizz, on 10/11/2008, -3/+19I believe she was about to say terrorist next, and that is what McCain was trying to refute. I think he was trying to shut her up, not say that Arabs are bad people
- gobbleplex, on 10/11/2008, -0/+16To say that 'Klansmen are Democrats' in 2008 is about as accurate as saying that today's Republicans are the 'Party of Lincoln'.
- b_flats, on 10/11/2008, -1/+17Except these tactics were by the Karl Rove-trained McCain staff.
I agree with everything else you say. - robbiedo, on 10/11/2008, -1/+17That woman is representative of the fear and anger which the Republicans have stoked for more than a generation, and exacerbated during the last eight years. There are a lot people out there who are worried, even scared; and their only source of information is the MSM(who have not played their critical role in a democracy to check power), and their neighbors. All they have heard from the Republican propaganda regime so reminiscent of Fascism, is fear and hate. They are a product of their failed leadership, and Democrats are the only responsible party left to clean up the mess in our two party system.
Pelosi needs to be defeated in her home district, and replaced. She is a failure of Congressional leadership, and Reid does not appear to be much better. Hopefully, Obama will fill the leadership void, and do no harm. - sk11, on 10/11/2008, -0/+16Lebanon is 40% christian, as are 10% of the populations of Jordan and Syria. Iran is only 3% Arab. These four are among Israel's staunchest enemies, with massive support for hezbollah in Lebanon and Iran.
Most Arab-Americans are christian, only 20% of them are muslim. - alleged, on 10/11/2008, -2/+17However this turns out, it's good to see that in 2008, an African-American can be a Presidential nominee.
What we're seeing are the spasms of resentment from the passive-aggressive racists within the GOP. Nothing else seems to be working, expect the "Willie Horton" treatment very soon. - cquinnd, on 10/11/2008, -1/+16Palin did use similar tactics in her past runs for political office.
- inactive, on 10/11/2008, -0/+15You're a ***** whack job. Nothing in this campaign even remotely warrants Obama being accused of being a Muslim terrorist, and you for damned sure don't go around calling for death to a presidential candidate. You don't like being associated with that crowd? Fine, I understand. In fact, McCain earned a lot of respect from me for standing up to these hate-mongers. But don't you ***** dare to come in here and try to justify their actions. It's wrong, and it's absolutely disgusting.
- CrimsonBlur, on 10/11/2008, -3/+18Are you kidding me? No Obama supporters on on Digg or anywhere else have been calling McCain a terrorist, claiming he is a Muslim, or just being straight-up racists. McCain supports have. Don't even get me started on Palin.
Don't be foolish, my friend. There is a huge difference between criticizing someone and their policies and inciting hate, racism and violence. - nick111, on 10/11/2008, -1/+15Well I do.
Americans aren't the only people that matter *****, and unfortunately, the choices made by large numbers of unbelievably stupid people affect the rest of us.
And you know what? We on the outside have a better view of what's going on in your country than you on the inside... because your news sources are a ***** joke. Because you've been the victim of a sustained propaganda[1] campaign that's being going on for the last 30 years. Because massive stratas of American society seems to have this lack of curiosity about the rest of the world - as Jon Stewart put it "War : God's way of teaching Americans geography".
This [2] was the front page of a UK national newspaper the day after the last election - it was as clear as day to the rest of us that Bush was a massive massive mistake. If you'd listened to France before the last war, your military would still have credibility, your international standing would be far better and you'd be about 3 trillion dollars better off.
Tell you what - how about listening to the rest of the world for a change? We aren't your enemies. This is our planet and we care about what happens to it.

[2] http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c290/stevemist1/ ... - alleged, on 10/11/2008, -0/+14Klansmen left the Democratic party in droves after the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Wanna know where they migrated to? I'll give you a hint: McCain is a member of the same party.
- cyreeo, on 10/12/2008, -0/+13McCain is an intelligent, basically reasonable guy. It sounds to me like he's getting a little freaked out by what his campaign has started. He chose the low road to win votes, I guess it never occurred to him the kinds of emotions those messages can stir up.
- oehmer08, on 10/11/2008, -1/+13pretty unbelievable what right wing rednecks will believe when told by an old guy's campaign ads.
- bullox, on 10/11/2008, -0/+12"According to my research a full 30+% of the people are not paying any taxes now, explain how to cut taxes for 95% when 30+% don't pay taxes now? How is that going to work? "
95% of tax-paying Americans will get a tax cut. That is where your logic fails. Pretty simple really, how do you not understand that? - Ethos79, on 10/12/2008, -0/+12I'm a christian Arab... and I have a lot of Arab Muslim friends,,, None of them... NONE supports religious extremists.. you are so ignorant. .. I can't believe you are giving such generalizations..
Arab refers to ethnicity , language and culture .... not religious beliefs.... - inactive, on 10/11/2008, -2/+14Really, as one who has generally been very disproving of the way McCain has handled his campaign thus far, I think, given the circumstances, he did the right thing. Granted, it's his fault he's in this mess to begin with, and it's clear that he's in way over his head, but in that moment, he simply wanted to refute that woman and move on. Yes, he could've done more, but I think, in that situation, I don't think any of us can say for certain that we would've handled that differently.
- AustinJambo, on 10/12/2008, -1/+12If you travel in the United States, you'll find extremely large support for certain extremist positions like an end to the world and the Rapture. Try it, just talk to people on the street. While, yes, few Americans are keen on committing violence, the equation Americans = religious extremists is a fairly good generalization, even if it's somewhat unfair to the secular rationalists and quiet handful of thinking people left.
You see, thinly veiled prejudice masquerading as knowledge can cut both ways... - whiteguysamurai, on 10/11/2008, -6/+17Liberals are the most level headed amongst us, they are unlikely to actually kill W, So it's an empty threat, however conservatives, especially those who are who are on the FAR right, are very likely to try to kill obama, these are very unstable people we are talking about.
- b_flats, on 10/11/2008, -2/+13I wonder in a year from now, we will look back at this as the day that not only Obama won the election, but that McCain blew it?
- brianpeiris, on 10/11/2008, -1/+12Damn it McCain!
If your tactics incite event the slightest hint of danger towards Obama and his family, you will not be spared your accountability.
Rekindling the hatred that has plagued America's history in the midst of an economic meltdown would cause a national depression in both senses of the term.
You have pumped the bellows of a very dangerous flame, such actions cannot be reversed so easily.
Republicans, If a senior (Gayle Quinnell) can send out hundreds of letters of what seemed to be misinformation designed to engender Fear, Uncertainty and Doubt about Obama, surely you can stand up for you and your party's values.
These dangerous practices need to be halted. - Ultomato, on 10/11/2008, -0/+11i guess mccain finally realized that he shouldnt even be running after seeing the fruits of his labor
